1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of existing conditions, also the treatment for the cure and relief of this body.

2. EC: Yes, we have the body here.

3. Now, we find there are many conditions that cause the distresses and dis-ease for the body. These are the outcome of complications and neglecting minor conditions until there arose conditions that were hard to combat with, and the effects of physical condition and forces have been treated, rather than the cause or seat of the trouble.

4. These conditions, as we find, may be assisted and helped a great deal, while it will be necessary at first to build that there may be some resistance in various portions of the functioning system, then change the environmental forces in the functioning of the system - so that a general rebuilding may be accomplished.

5. These, then, are conditions as we find them to be met at the present time:

6. IN THE BLOOD SUPPLY, this very weak from many standpoints. Little resistance is stored in the body, either as to red blood supply or to white - using, as it were, practically all energy as is created in the physical forces of the body, and more often than otherwise the body feels as if another strain or another exertion would be most too much for the body. That as is seen, then, saps or keeps down the abilities of the body to recuperate, in the sense that it lasts. While there are periods when the body feels much improved, yet these do not last - for, as is seen and as given, the complications seem to hinder the body from recuperation in a general way and manner.

7. IN THE NERVE SYSTEM, we find much of the seat and cause of the trouble in the nerve system, for where specific conditions have existed in the physical forces of the body, the taxation from same to the nerve system has brought such racking conditions that the body first itself in that condition of being neurotic in nature; that is, while specific conditions exist in portions of body, the wearing and tearing on nerves - especially to the sympathetic - has been such that one portion suffers in sympathy with another. Hence there are times when the head, nose, throat, lungs even, seem to be that most affected. Again the stomach, the heart, the digestive system, all out of balance. These, as we see, are the EFFECTS of pressure produced in specific centers in a way and manner that the whole system becomes involved, through the solar plexus and its tributaries throughout the lower portion of body. The pressure created in this same plexus region causes the cardiac - the secondary cardiac - the contract at times. Again we find the hypogastric causes distress, through the condition as is produced in the mesenteric system. Again we find the pneumogastric gives that distress as to the upper portion of body - head, arm, limbs, give distress.

8. In the general physical functioning of organs, we find there show their strain, as may be from blood supply and from the EFFECT of strain produced on the organs; yet little or no organic trouble exists in the present conditions. Rather that same pressure as is seen in the 10th and 11th dorsal, and in the 3rd and 4th lumbar.

9. Now, to meet the needs of the conditions of this body, [4728] we are speaking of, first we would begin with this:

10. Prepare these as properties, that we may have that which - in the vibratory forces of the digestive system, of the blood forces as are to be builded from - may be added TO in the GENERAL way. Prepare as this:

11. To one-half (1/2) gallon of rain water, add:

Sarsaparilla Root…2 ounces, Wild Cherry Bark…1 ounce, Burdock Root…1 ounce, Mandrake Root…10 grains, Buchu Leaves…20 grains, Calisaya Bark…1/2 ounce, Sassafras Root Bark…1/4 ounce, Prickly Ask Bark…1/2 ounce.

12. Reduce this by simmering (not boiling) to one (1) pint. Strain while warm and add: Fluid Extracts of Peppermint ten (10) minims. Cut two (2) drams Balsam of Tolu in two (2) ounces pure grain alcohol and add to solution.

13. Shake solution well before each dose is taken, taking half teaspoonful three times each day, before meals.

14. Do not overtax the system through the eating - for, as has been seen, that is necessary to be changed from time to time. Do not eat MUCH meats, though the JUICES of same are well for the body. See? As much GREEN vegetable forces as may be assimilated by the system. Watch the assimilations! Do not allow any of the foods to FERMENT in the system. When such is found to disagree (for the body finds this changes very often), do not use same. Fruits and nuts, or fruit juices and nuts are best - if they will ASSIMILATE for the body.

15. Also wear those vibrations - or receive BY wearing those vibrations as will be found in the Double X Radium Appliance.

16. After these have been taken, and this appliance worn for thirty-five (35) days, we would give further instructions for the normal forces to be brought to this body.

17. This is the beginning of the BUILDING, or preparation for the application of other forces to this body, [4728].

As far as I can as a layman, judge you have got pretty near my wife’s trouble. She is suffering from an old long standing, chronic bronchitis, brought on by repeated operations on the nose for catarrhal trouble. These operations, many of them needless have upset the nervous system and brought on asthmatic conditions. To relieve these conditions I give her at intervals adrenaline in hypodermic injections. Though I have been as careful as possible this more or less affects the heart.

As your reading suggest, all previous treatments have been rather to reach the effect than the CAUSE of her trouble. Her general health is good. Has an excellent appetite - sleeps well when not disrupted by asthma or coughing. Her heart and lungs seem to be sound - we are going to carry out the suggestions you make as regards to the blood remedy. As for the Radium appliance, I will candidly say that I have little faith in such contrivances, I will however get in touch with the makers of the same.

We will keep you informed as to the case from time to time.

As I wrote you before, you may consider the payment I have made as in the nature of an initial fee.

Dear Mr. Cayce,

I have your letter telling me that I have been made a member of your association.

I appreciate the privilege and hope some day to avail myself of the advantages offered -

Offer a long spell of dry weather we today got some rain water and have prepared the concochion of herbs.

I have received from Los Angeles description matter concerning the radium appliance.

I wish to be quite frank with you so I will say that I was disappointed when you recommended a contrivance of this character, and the reading of their claims has made me more so.

I have had some practical knowledge of radium for many years.

Concerning its use and value comparatively little is yet known.

A car load of radium earth and pitch blend will yield only a minute quantity of radium.

They claim that their pad contained a definite amount of radium so would a handful of this earth of pitch blend.

As to the testimonials they as a rule mean nothing.

I am however open to conviction - I would gladly pay the price of the thing many times over, if I felt somewhat sure that it would bring relief to my wife -

Forty years ago the catchword was ELECTRICITY. Then we had electric belts, electric pads, electric hair brushes, etc, etc.

Now they are exploiting radium in much the same way - I know a firm in Los Angeles selling earthen vessels that, they claim, will charge water with radium.

I want, if possible, to follow out to the letter the treatment you suggest for Mrs. [4728].

Can you give me any assurance that the appliance in question has any positive value towards helping a case of chronic bronchitis and asthma?

Dear Mr. […]

Replying to yours of the 15th, we certainly hope that we may have the privilege of having you at the Beach, that you may see just how the work is being conducted and how the data is gathered that we believe - by experience will be worth while.

I’m glad you have been able to get the medicinal properties to-gether, and I trust you will find same beneficial toward the physical well being of Mrs. [4728].

Now, regarding the appliance - I don’t suppose, Mr. [4728] there was anyone ever more astonished than ourselves when we first had information concerning the Radium Appliance. We had never heard of such a thing, and had to take the second reading to find out who made it, and the address as was furnished you was given us through the reading. I cannot tell you anything about the efficacy of the appliance, except from the reports of those individuals whom we have suggested in readings to use same. In the last two years I think we have suggested about fifty or more of these appliances, of various strengths, to be used. During that time there has been only one individual who has not been very loud in the praise of the appliance - and they have been given for various conditions. I do not blame you for being skeptical, having the knowledge you have concerning such appliances - but, as you know, these are sent you on a twenty day trial. If at the end of that time you do not see or feel that it has been of any use, and you return it, there will be no questions asked and your money will be refunded. Understand, I have nothing to do with the company that manufactures these

• know nothing about how they are made - in fact, I have only seen one of the appliances, and that was worn by a relative of my wife’s, who was on a visit to us a few months ago - this young lady [569] says that money could not buy hers, if she couldn’t get another one - and that has been the verdict of practically everyone that we have suggested them for. Whether there’s any virtue in them or not, I don’t know!

I appreciate very much your writing me at length, for I assure you it is our desire to be of help if possible.

I think you can very readily see, Mr. [4728] how it is and why it is that I have been so anxious that we have an institution where data concerning treatments suggested through these readings may be followed up under the direction of competent physicians, so that the various things that are suggested may be tested in a way and manner that is beyond question - and we can’t do it unless we do have a place where such research work may be carried out. That’s why so many of our friends have gone about to assist me in getting this institution in actual operation - and we hope it will be in actual operation by or before the first of the year.

R4. 8/22/27 A. D. Butler’s letter: “The trained nurse over there [for Mrs. [4728]] said that you surely stated Mrs. [4728]‘s condition as is. She also mentioned that Mrs. [4728] had complained that the medicine seemed too strong for her. They had better go ahead and give it a fair trial, however, is my opinion. Mrs. [4728] has been a sufferer for a long while, and I think that they must have had several hundred doctors looking her over or working on her from time to time.”

Dear Sir,

My wife wishes me to reply to your letter of enquiry in regard to the reading that was given her in July 26, ‘27 by Mr. Cayce.

First I would say that the diagnosis by Mr. Cayce is remarkably like one given later by a doctor of Alabama -

A diagnosis of course is of no value unless followed by treatment -

My Cayce advised a concoction of herbs for the blood and an appliance in the form of a pad supposed to contain radium, as a nerve treatment -

The herb mixture was so drastic that she could not follow up the treatment -

I believed from the first that the radium pad was a humbug and when I read the literature sent me from Los Angeles I was more than ever confirmed in that opinion.

A hundred years ago or so it was magnetism in the form of a belt or pad or ring or insole, then came electricity and they had only to change the name for the new contraption -

Now it is radium in different forms.

You can buy an earthen jar in Los Angeles which will impact radium greatly to water placed in it.

There are always thousands of poor sick people ever ready to turn to anything that offers relief -

My wife has even found out the so called “divine healing” cults - Eddyism - New Thought, Unity and the like - Within the last two months she had thrown away $25. on Unity - They are all alike - catch penny schemes - They never have and never will cure a serious chronic disease - My wife suffers from chronic bronchitis - The doctors say it is incurable but they are by no means infallible.

We thank you for your kind interest in her case and would be glad to hear of any suggestion in the nature of a relief -

We wish to thank you for your letter of November 26th, and for your frank statements contained therein, for just in this manner are we able to determine just how far-reaching our work is.

It is too bad that a lot of our members are unable to come to the hospital for treatment as given in their several readings, for I am sure if you had the opportunity to come here you would be able to see the very remarkable results with those who are being treated here strictly in accordance with the suggestions given by Mr. Cayce through his psychic readings.

In talking with Mr. Cayce about your letter, he is of the opinion that the prescription which was given for Mrs. [4728] and which you say was so drastic, was probably because it was not prepared properly. We make this statement based upon our experiences of the past.

As to the radium pad, out of about 150 of these pads which were suggested in the readings to be used as a treatment in the past several years, there have been 2 to our knowledge, one yourself, who have been dissatisfied with the results. We presume you have returned the pad to the manufacturers in accordance with the guarantee which is sent out with them.

The only way in which we could offer any suggestions in the nature of a relief for Mrs. [4728] would be in another reading given on her condition, and we assure you that we would be very glad to help in this manner.

My wife is suffering from a chronic trouble involving the nose and throat. She does not need confinement in a hospital but rather examination as to the cause of her trouble and advice and treatment that might relieve, if not cure her.

It is necessary that I should be with her. Would it be possible for us to live in an annex rather than in the hospital?

We could leave home about the first of August.

I have your letter of the 13th, and note what you have to say about your wife’s condition and your desire to come to the hospital for examination and treatment.

Since you last heard from me, the hospital has been closed. However, this was due to differences among the individuals sponsoring same. We have associates, and affiliation and facilities for taking care of the patients who come. While the physician who would care for Mrs. [4728] condition is located in Norfolk, arrangements could be made so that she could go back and forth - which would only be about half to three-quarters of an hour trip. My sister, who was in charge of the hospital work, has a little place - with a registered nurse - where she takes care of the people who come from time to time. For the next two weeks she will have her place full to overflowing, but if you expect to be here during August - and could let me know just what time in August - we could take care of Mrs. [4728]. I don’t believe there is a better man to be found anywhere in the country than the one we have to take care of eye, ear, nose and throat troubles [M. L. Richardson, D.O.], to say nothing of the advantage you might have from the information that would be given through the readings.

I would be glad to hear from you, and to make arrangements for you.

Please remember me very kindly to Mr. Butler and his wife, for we consider them among our very closest and most loved friends.

True, we haven’t a large hospital - but, as I told you, we have the same one in charge, same nurses as in the other hospital, AND the DOCTORS who would cooperate, who DO cooperate with us, are - I am sure - equal to, or better than those that were in charge of the work in the other hospital, and you would have the same consideration. True, there is some little inconvenience in making a trip two or three times a week to the doctor’s office, but I merely said “specialist” to indicate the CHARACTER of man who is willing to lay aside his own theories to follow the suggestions of the information given in the reading - and that’s what he would do for Mrs. [4728] is she was here. However, you can let us know if you have fully decided not to make the trip.

We have tried many doctors and hospitals and even a change of climate all of which has brought little or no relief - will you please see what you can do for her in the way of advice or remedy -

I’m glad to know you are acquainted with my good friend Mr. Butler. I think he is one of the best men it has ever been my pleasure to know, and I’m glad to know that he spoke well of the work I’m trying to do. I think he has every reason to know as well as anyone possibly could most every side of the phenomena - and I feel sure he is a competent judge, and I feel sure you have found him to be a man that doesn’t make decisions nor pass judgement without due consideration. I certainly hope and trust that we will be able to offer through these sources that information necessary for the full correction of those conditions that have been troubling your wife, and I believe we will.
