R1. 3/18/44 EC’s letter:

Dear Miss […]:

We were unable to get the reading for [4822] on March 16th. The attempt was made but apparently the address was wrong or not sufficient.

Due to the fact that it will now be several months before another appointment can be made we are very sure that you would prefer having your membership fee returned. We are enclosing herewith check for twenty dollars.

B1. 3/?/44 Aunt’s (?) note verifying appointment which had been made on 1/24/44:

This boy, since childhood, has been erratic and unmanageable; would not take an education nor stick to a job.

He did not want to enter military service, but did volunteer. However, he has not submitted to authority and, I think, attempted to desert. He claims that he lost his memory and does not know what happened to him during the two months before he was found. The authorities seem to believe him and have him in the mental ward. I do not know what they intend to do to him, nor does he.

He is beginning to think there is something wrong with his mind. He has been in several bad car wrecks and was very ill when very young. Several years ago I persuaded him to see Dr. Tucker in Richmond, who said he could find nothing wrong with the boy. However, I cannot believe he is simply willfully bad, as he has a nice personality, manners, and ideals; nor has there ever been anything of this kind in the family.

He is very much worried about himself and wants to do better. I think he would like to be reinstated and make good before it is too late.

I shall cooperate with you in every way possible, but do not think it wise to ask him to do so. If his address is changed, I will notify you. The hour and time suit me perfectly. Of course, not having seen the place, I cannot describe it. I hope you can go on with this information, but if there is anything further I can do, please let me know.
