1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also the treatment for the cure and relief of this body. You will answer the questions which I will ask you regarding same.

2. EC: Yes, we have the body here. Now, we find there are those conditions that are disturbing in the physical functioning of the body. These have to do with many an influence not nominally nor easily understood; yet, as manifest in the physical forces of this body, are just as much of a physical reaction as were the nominal or easily understood physical organs in distress. These ARE in distress, yet that which produces same is not easily - or seemingly not easily - understood.

3. The conditions have to do with the application of the mental being with the physical and spiritual body, yet in the reaction are purely physical - when understood from material standpoint.

4. The condition has, then, been a gradual growth, until the pressure has become, or did become, of sufficient intensity to reduce the supplying forces as are emanating to the entire nervous and functional system of the glands in body, and with this pressure began the various effects which have been produced on the system according to the cycle of effect produced BY the pressure on the pineal gland and center. This coming, then, from conditions as had to do with outside influences - but are to be dealt with here in the physical body in the present.

5. In this, then - in the applying of mechanical forces for the body:

6. As much mental rest as possible is the first essential to bringing about a betterment for physical reaction. To INDUCE such a condition there must be an assistance to the system that supplies to the body the elements necessary to bring some resuscitation, or some activity, upon which the glands - and the system in its nominal mental reaction - may feed or build upon. These, as we find, may be applied through the application of the Radio-Active Appliance (manufactured by Thomas B. Brown, 139 W. 2nd St., Dayton, Ohio), that would carry first Chloride of Gold in a proportion of one grain to one ounce of water. In the alternate application of the same vibratory force, would carry MURIATED iron in solution - see? Apply the negative anode to the umbilicus, and the positive to the 1st cervical; and the time of the application of this vibratory force should be at least TWENTY minutes to begin with, and gradually INCREASING - every twelve hours - until an hour may be given, see? With the iron, apply the positive anode to the wrist and the negative anode to the umbilicus.

7. These - with the added application of sufficient neutralization through the general manipulation, as should be accorded for rest of the system - will bring about the first resuscitating forces for the body. The sooner these forces may be applied to the body the better it would be for same.

9. (Q) What mode of manipulation would be beneficial? (A) The gentle neuropathic or osteopathic, so that coordination is kept. As will be seen by the examination, the tender places on the cerebro-spinal and sympathetic conjunctions will alternate and change as these vibrations are set up in system carrying these properties that will change the vibration to the brain impulse proper and to the nerve system, for their radiation comes from the branch, or branches, or tail end of the cerebro-spinal - in the lumbars, you see - and THROUGHOUT the alternate centers wherein the sympathetic radiates from same throughout system.

Do as we have given, and we will find we will bring the better conditions for the body. After this has been carried out for twenty to thirty days, we would give the changes and further instructions - were they asked for.

Dear Mrs […]:

We enclose the information which was obtained in the reading requested by Mr. […]. We are sending a copy of this to him. I only wish our institution was open. If such was the case I’m sure you would be able to get the treatment carried out in the way that would bring results. I’m certainly hoping you will follow these suggestions to the letter. The Radio-Active Appliance referred to, this may only be obtained from Mr. Thos. B. Brown, 139 W. 2nd St., Dayton, Ohio. Ask for specific instructions as to its use, etc. If you will follow this up I’m sure you will find it very much worth while. We will be mighty glad to hear from you, and we assure you if it is possible for us to be of help in any way we want you to call on us.

R2. 8/2/28 Letter: “The information contained in your letter of July 27th, about my daughter, [4849] was received yesterday, the letter to Mrs. […] at Trenton, N.J. having been forwarded to her to this point.

“I regret to advise that [4849] died in the Charles Hospital at Trenton, N.J. on the night of July 29th, from pneumonia following an operation for sinus and antrum troubles.

“Please send me your bill for services rendered and oblige.”

R3. 8/13/28 EC’s letter: “I have yours of the 2nd. I certainly was indeed sorry to hear of Miss [4849]‘s death. I regret that I couldn’t have been of service. Of course we have no bill, Mr. […]. The Assoc. attempts to serve others through these channels. Where we cannot be of service we can’t ask, or even think of asking one to contribute. The work is entirely philanthropic. Those who wish to contribute, may - and it is only through service that we hope to ever gain anything.

“I wish I knew how to express to you my sympathies at this time. I feel that no one knows how to sympathize that hasn’t experienced such. I believe that’s why our Lord and Master took on flesh, that he might know the suffering of the human heart, the frailty of flesh, the weakness of man. I trust that sometime we will all be able to understand. I believe our Assoc. offers a channel for the study of such. I hope we may accomplish something.

“I thank you for giving me the opportunity to TRY to serve. I regret that I was unable TO serve.”

B1. GD’s note: It is my vague recollection that news came to us, via friends who knew the family, that young Miss [4849] had first been taken to the hospital in N.J. for observation and treatment of a mental and nervous condition.

B2. 2/28 Mother’s letter to EC: “I was at one of your readings in Selma & we talked of having one for my sister who was ill at the time, but could not get her consent.

“Now I am very anxious to consult you about some one else & wish to know whether you will be in Va. Beach for the next ten days what your prices are etc. - PLEASE LET ME HEAR FROM YOU AT ONCE & oblige.”

B3. 2/29/28 EC’s letter: “Replying to yours of recent date, I enclose herewith some data concerning our institution and the working of same. We shall be very glad to make an appointment and try to be of help and assistance.

“Conditions are such that we will not be open for appointments before about the middle of March, but we shall be very glad to have your membership and to make an appointment at that time.

“To be sure I remember you and Mr. […] quite well. My wife and I had two days’ stay in Selma recently. It was very pleasant to meet many of my old friends at that time…”

B4. 7/23/28 Father’s letter: “I want to have a rdg. by you as soon as possible for a member of my family. Please advise how soon this can be done, together with the amount of the charges of your company, and full information. Please wire me collect as the matter is urgent.”
