Dear Mr. Cayce:

Although I am reading Thomas Sugrue’s “There is a River” with a great deal of excitement, I am stopping in the middle of it to write you a note.

Many times in the past thirty years I have heard your name mentioned regarding diagnosing my grandmother [Sallie Ford] and other episodes of your stay in Bowling Green, Ky., my birth place. When I noticed the first brief announcement of this book the theme was given but not your name and I told some friends of a young photographer in my home town who could do the same thing and wondered what had ever become of him. Then I went through the packing trunk to discover what photos we had from your studio and to look up what the name on them was.

Later I read a longer report of the book and found your name

• Edgar Cayce, the photographer about whom father had so often talked. If you can think back you will remember Joseph W. Ford, dentist, graduate of Vanderbilt University, who ran around with Louis J. Darter, the YMCA secretary and O. A. Roup, politician, and owner of the Times Journal. Incidentally, there is one error in this part of the book. Darter’s name was Louis - not Joe - and this confusion probably came about because father was always called Joe and was present at a number of your readings. My grandmother, whom you diagnosed, was Sallie J. Ford [4950] and lived at Smith’s Grove, Ky. She went to Mayo Brothers and was operated on for what you said she had - bladder, I believe. I was very young and recall only hearing about it. But - I do recall the time the men thought you could read legal documents you had not seen and father took a paper at random from his safe deposit box, sealed it in an envelope, placed it on the inside of his secret vest pocket, buttoned his coat and overcoat - and you told the men the contents and signatures of the document.

Another one he told me must have happened while Dr. Beazley, Drs. Blackburn, etc. were trying to learn the extent of your ability. They gave you a cane, telling you that it was a snake and you proceeded to try to kill it - but it was a fine old cane - family heirloom - and father hurried to have you informed that it was not a snake, just as you were going to chop it in two. I know, the above two are true, but I always wondered about the cane.

You have certainly done a remarkable work in this world and I sincerely regret that I have not known you better since the days you lived at home.

I think you and father were together quite a bit in Y and church work, as he was treasurer of the Christian Church where you taught Sunday School. He died in 1933. I wish he could read this book and know the good you have done in the world.

My Dear Dorothy,

Thank you for yours of the seventh. To think that we have heard from you and you are in the hometown of the young man who wrote the book, as Mr. Sugrue was born in Naugatuck. Of course, I remember your father and mother very, very well and remember you, of course, as a tiny little girl I think, in fact, the last time I saw you you had on long dresses. Dr. Ford was one of our best friends and was our dentist. I have a letter on my desk from Mr. Darter. He is the assistant of the pastor of the Presbyterian Church in New Orleans. I remember all of the people whom you speak of in Bowling Green. I was there last Fall and talked with Dr. Blackburn

• he is still there, and also Dr. John. Dr. Jim has just retired from practice. Dr. Beazley is practicing in Hopkinsville, Ky. He has gone back home. Of course, you know by reading the book all there is to know about the family. I am still a Sunday School teacher. I have the Adult Bible Class at the First Presbyterian, since there is not a Christian Church here.

We are, of course, very, very busy. We have appointments for people from every state in the Union including Mexico, Canada, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and England. I certainly am hoping that you will write us again. I am sending you the data of the Association that you may know just about how the work is carried on at this time. The Association is a corporation and recognized by the State and by the National Government. All the data may be of special interest to you. Yes, I wish many of my old friends may and could know about what is being done with the information at this time. But somehow, I feel they do. Of course, they may be in another consciousness, but they are not dead. They have only gone into God’s other room.

Mrs. Cayce and I both send you our kindest personal regards and love, for we know of no other persons we thought more of as our friends than your father and mother. With every good wish, I am

Dear Mr. Cayce:

I have thought of you and the interest I found in your book. A friend of mine read your book with much interest, especially as his wife has been ill for several years. He has spoken often of being anxious to talk to you - and today we found I would have vacation time at the same time he has his - so we will be at Virginia Beach - great surprise to me!

Would you be so kind as to see what reservations you can make? I have noticed a N.Y. Times ad of Martha Washington at $30 per week but I do not know what kind of a hotel it is nor do we need meals included as we shall go to other places, too.

He will want a single room and bath near the beach at a good hotel but not an expensive society place.

I would like a room and bath in the same hotel or one nearby

• whatever is available from the evening of Monday - August 14th through Sunday night August 20th for both reservations.

Will you let me know as soon as possible what you have been able to get so we can make our ticket arrangements?

I really look forward to talking to you “folks” and digging up the old Bowling Green news. I noticed in the B.G. paper that Mrs. Farnsworth and Mrs. Rooker have died. Guess the old Christian Church would seem strange to us now. Bro. Houze wrote me that they will celebrate its 100th anniversary next April - and likewise the 50th anniversary of his ordination.

Dear Mrs. Wulfeck:

Thank you very much for your letter of July 9th. I do hope that it will be possible for you to make the grade in getting down to Virginia Beach. Let me give you the addresses where I think you will be most apt to have the best consideration and I think that you will get just about as good prices and be nicely situated too.

We can’t undertake to make reservations, Dorothy, for anybody, if we commence, we’ll be in the middle of a bad fix when you think of the thousands of people who write us and who come here for meetings or for readings. But if you will write the Tourist Haven, Essex House or the Courtney Terrace, now we have quite a number of people who are here even now, that have found places at either one of these. We are known very well at either of these places and they’re not very far from our place. You can get just a room or room with meals. I think that these will be much better than the Martha Washington.

I do hope that you will come down. I will be mighty glad to see you again. Tell me about when Mrs. Farnsworth passed away. I saw them about two years ago and I heard from Aubrey or from his wife at least two or three weeks ago. She didn’t mention anything about her death.

One of our men at the Congress was from Bowling Green, but he was no one that either of us knew when we lived there. Thanks a lot and looking forward to seeing you. With every good wish from Mrs. Cayce and me, I am
