This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 9th day of April, 1944, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [5021], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by article in “The Christian Century.”
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. (Notes read to and transcribed by Jeanette Fitch.)]
Time of Reading Set bet. 3:30 to 4:30 P. M. Taken 3:40 to 3:50 P. M. Eastern War Time. …, Calif.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them.
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [5021].
-
As we find, there are disturbing conditions preventing the better physical functioning of this body. These have been coming on for some time. During the last period of childbirth there were adhesions caused, in the lower portion of the caecum and in the areas about the appendix. The adherence of tissue in these portions of the body causes the weakening of the body’s strength, the upsetting in the digestive forces and the general disturbances producing periods of headache, the uncomfortable feelings through the abdominal area, pressures upon the circulation through the lower portions of body, the hot and cold flushes that are a part of the experience. All of these arise as disturbances.
-
In making corrections we would begin applying hot Castor Oil Packs over the whole right side, from the liver to the lower portion of the caecum, for an hour to an hour and a half each day for five days in succession. Apply an electric pad to keep the Packs warm. Each time when taking off, sponge the area with soda water and then massage thoroughly - not kneading in such a way as to cause rupture, but gradually under these stresses the adhesions may be broken up. For such a massage, we would use this combination of oils:
Olive Oil (heated)…2 ounces, Peanut Oil…2 ounces, Lanolin (melted)…1/4 ounce.
-
After the five-day series of the Packs leave off five days. Then apply again for five days. On the fifth day, or the next morning, take internally at least a tablespoonful of Olive Oil. This should be taken following each five-day series of the Castor Oil Packs.
-
Then begin with osteopathic massages twice each week, with particular reference to the lumbar-sacral areas as well as the brachial center and through the cervicals; coordinating the rest with same.
-
In the matter of the diet keep away from starches and fried foods of any kind.
-
Thus we will bring better conditions for this body.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What causes acute distress in chest and heart region, particularly left side? (A) Reflex from the same conditions in the gall duct and in the area between the caecum, the liver and gall duct area.
-
(Q) What causes the left eye to tire quickly and the dark discoloration under it? (A) Pressures upon the central nervous system. As these are gradually causing greater and greater distress, more and more pressure is put upon the kidneys. Thus these effects are as reflexes from the disturbance in the kidney area; but with the applications and the cleansing of the system, then the osteopathic correction and the breaking up of the adhesions and lesions, we will bring better forces for this body.
Do that. We are through with this reading.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 4/10/44 Letter: ”…As to the reading yesterday, I want to report my experience as what occurred was so very unexpected and to me, very strange… There was a feeling that the reading started a bit early, but I realize the subtle, really intangible occurrences could easily be the result of imagination - for instance the cool breeze which seemed over me or in the room at times. But I remember thinking how remarkable it was that such a thing should be taking place with everything seeming so usual. However, at the close of the reading, I suddenly felt an edge of rather sharp discomfort running from my right hip - almost to my knee along the side, then a sudden rigidity of the body. It seemed as though I were rather hovering over my body, looking toward my feet; my body seemed to be lengthening and becoming almost stone-like. My heart pounded and my breathing was heavy. I felt as though my body were in a vise. At first I started to feel frightened, but this was quickly overcome. This was, I imagine, only a matter of seconds - though it seemed longer at the time. As soon as it passed, I felt a remarkable sense of exaltation and such a feeling of thankfulness.
“I fell to my knees after walking about a bit, and poured out my gratitude for something I realized was not in my understanding. During the reading I kept as relaxed as possible. My prayer was that this great directive force would have control for good - that out of this experience would come benefit not only for me, but for others. Sunday will always be a day I shall treasure, for it was full of richness… This seems a lengthy letter to send to a man so pressed for time, but I felt it had to be written.”
R2. 4/30/44 Letter: ”…Dr. Elise M. Carlsen is the osteopathic physician who is treating me. She is reading your book… We shall follow all instructions to the letter. All diagnosis previously given has been so very incomplete, touching a bit here and there only. Of course, it is plain now why the general osteopathic treatments and diathermy you gave me will help more than anything else, coupled with rest…”
R3. 5/15/44 Letter: ”…I finished first 5-day period of Castor Oil Packs, and shall begin next 5 later this week. Dr. C. notices definite softening in area of caecum and gall bladder. I have had favorable reactions in some ways…”
R4. 6/17/44 Letter: ”…Dr. C. has planned to report on my case, but she is so busy she has simply put it off. I hope she will soon, for she found the parts you designated to be the places needing special treatment. She gives a splendid deep manipulation. My response to the hot oil packs and to these treatments could not be better. The old heart and chest distress has not returned in spite of a few times when I became over-tired and I can do quite a lot of walking with ease. No more of that breathlessness. My color is better than it has been in many, many years, and that with the eye condition was greatly improved even by time the 2 five-day Oil Pack treatment was finished. The only thing which has so far not responded, is the trouble with the hot flushes which at times breaks my rest badly - so I’m again having to resort to the shots to keep them under control. In view of my doing so splendidly, a checking hardly seems necessary. I’m so grateful…”
R5. 6/28/44 Letter: ”…Dr. C. still has good intentions about writing you. I am very glad to tell you that Dr. B. David B. Bosworth, D.O.] associated with my osteopathic physician, Dr. G. [Jack Goodfellow, D.O.] is going to try to see some of the doctors mentioned in ‘There Is A River’ when he goes east to a convention this year. They have both read the book, and are keenly interested in my daughter’s report of the great benefit which has come to me…”
R6. 8/15/44 Letter: ”…Tho I have gotten very tired at times since coming home, I have not had to go to bed and stay for days, as had been the case over period of years, when any fatigue brought on such heart distress and weakness. While I wish for even greater endurance, I do feel most grateful for the far greater amount now given me…”
R7. 11/7/44 Letter: ”…The hot flushes which I had expected to be cured by the treatment prescribed by Mr. Cayce, have continued, but they are a trivial thing compared to other things, and I felt that while my general great improvement, it did not warrant another reading. However, they do lessen my general well-being, and the shots at times have seemed effective, other times not. I have not wanted to take them since reading the September 18 WRE that all shots were undesirable…” [Her Life Rdg. appointment was cancelled due to EC’s death.]
R8. 12/31/47 Letter: “It is with real regret that I write requesting you to drop my name from your mailing list until I can send money due you…”
R9. 2/17/48 A.R.E. reply: “In compliance with your request, we are removing your name from the active membership list… Please keep us advised of your whereabouts, and continue to let us hear from you at frequent intervals…”
R10. 6/1/49 Letter: “The ‘Searchlight’ of 5/1/49, ‘Influences from without’ which quoted from my experience, was forwarded to my address here… While in Los Angeles for 2 days, I telephoned a friend… She knew nothing of my interest in the occult or of the healing I had through Edgar Cayce… I do believe there are rare souls who are gifted as Edgar Cayce - but I am inclined to believe that God makes such a gift very plain…”
R11. 4/3/50 Questionnaire sent to Dr. Carlsen. No reply. 4/3/50 Questionnaire sent to Mrs. [5021].
R12. 5/18/50 Reply to questionnaire: “Chief complaint false angina pain; shortness of breath; weariness (unusual darkness under left eye); I do not recall the date of onset, but I had this several years before consulting Edgar Cayce. After following, the treatment in my reading (I had to use treatments 3 or 4 times - about 1 year or 1 1/2 years apart). The symptoms did not return with original intensity - probably because I resumed the treatments. Physicians could not correctly diagnose soreness discovered through heart and back region. Their guess was it had something to do with circulation. One doctor diagnosed gall bladder, bladder trouble. In following my reading, I took osteopathic treatments at first for 3 months; these at irregular intervals; have had to be continued. The extreme breathlessness and false angina pains apparently cured. The osteopathic treatments are taken when soreness results from nerve tension or when there is muscular strain. The oil packs and massage evidently most effective in either breaking down the adhesions around gall bladder and liver, or lessening them to a degree sufficient to increase the circulation and so curing heart pain.
“Mr. Cayce diagnosed adhesions caused by childbirth, but he did not refer to a badly prolapsed uterus and bladder, though it was present then and recently had to have operation for this old trouble. Though there has been some mild recurrence at times, always relief has come with resumed treatment, and it has now been over 2 years since I took the last series of hot oil packs. From the standpoint of the spiritual, I feel that every contact made with any person of unusual spiritual character, adds to the spiritual growth of the one searching for truth. Thus, I can say Mr. Cayce was one among others, for whom I can feel grateful. He helped me physically a very great deal, and added to my spiritual growth - a growth which maybe is continuing. It is with sincere hope that as I profited, others may continue to profit by his unselfish service given for so many years.”
R13. 10/10/52 Comment by D. H. Fogel, M.D.,heart specialist, who studied this case: “Possibly a true angina, rather than false.”
R14. 9/15/67 Granddaughter’s letter: “Since my childhood I have been aware of Edgar Cayce’s work, as at one time he diagnosed my grandmother, Mrs. [5021]. Only recently I read the Stearn book on Cayce, and my husband and I have become interested in procuring the ‘black book’ of remedies which is mentioned therein. Can you tell me where I can obtain this book? We would also like very much to have our names placed on the Association’s mailing list, as we are interested in the work which you carry on. Thank you.”
Background
Background
B1. 6/21/43 Letter: “The article in ‘The Christian Century’ regarding your God-given power has interested me deeply. As soon as possible, I shall get the book ‘There is A River’. In the meantime, I’m wondering if it is possible for you to help one who cannot be actually in your presence. For many weeks, I have been seeking guidance regarding a seemingly necessary operation… It is a gall bladder condition, complicated somewhat by a heart condition and general lack of endurance. Also, if I do have the operation, I am considering a certain surgeon and going to …, Calif. to an osteopathic hospital. On the other hand, there may be some remedy for this condition of which the doctors are unaware… If you cannot help me, I am sure an answer will come through some other source, if I keep trusting and seeking…”
B2. 7/6/43 Letter: ”…Here is my problem: Whether or not to have gall bladder operation, and if I do, whom to have… The local doctor says (x-rays prove this) that the gall bladder is completely walled off with adhesions, is not acting, liver quite infected, that to have operation would still leave liver infected and my heart condition and general lack of endurance would make it very risky, also a long convalescence would be best result. My daughter K. A. T., a nurse, is associated with a fine osteopathic surgeon, Dr. G. O. O. [Dr. Goodfellow, Jack; D.O.], in …, Calif. He says that as long as the gall bladder is not removed, the liver cannot improve. The surrounding tissues will continue to deteriorate, and poison is aggravating heart condition. He would operate in early fall and have me go to osteopathic hospital in Calif., where he would come to do the work. My local doctor is an atheist… Dr. G. O. O. is extremely self-confident, has never been interested along spiritual or psychical lines, and whether he would cooperate, I do not know… He wants me to decide as soon as possible, so that he may plan for the operation. I do not want to have it unless it will prolong my life… If there is help for my condition other than by operation, I want it…”
B3. 12/15/43 Letter: “Have thought often of writing you again since coming up here in September, when a gall bladder operation seemed definite. The x-rays diagnosis at home proved mistaken, however, and here they found instead a duodenal ulcer of long standing. Affected membranes of heart and chest, also result of past years of fatigue and nerve strain. Treatment and rest are working well, but I feel that a reading from you will give more aid… The doctors up here want me to keep free from all responsibility or care of any kind, and discourage my habit of listening to troubles and problems of others… I realize I must have certain endurance and freedom from all nerve tension to be of best use and the physical condition must be cleaned up. As it seems to be doing this, I think the time will come when I can be used more…”
B4. 1/5/44 Letter: ”…There are several things which the doctors here feel are slow in responding because of thyroid trouble. While I’m better and feel with care and diet I shall continue to improve, I do so want to be really well…”
B5. 2/10/44 Letter: ”…About the 20th of this month, I expect to go to …, Calif. for a time for continued rest and treatment. After I have the reading in April, I am going back to …, Calif. with any information you send me, and I feel sure of Dr. G. O. O.’s cooperation, as I gave him one of your books to read. His partner was also very anxious to read it…”
B6. 3/28/44 Questions submitted in addition to those at end of Physical Rdg: ”…Cause and cure for the following: (1) The serious lack of endurance; the frequent, sometimes acute distress in chest and heart region, particularly left side. (2) What more can I do to keep thyroid gland under control? (3) What most effective remedy for the hot flashes? (4) Are these last 2 symptoms the cause of much insomnia? (5) Is ulcer healing properly? Please check on gall bladder and kidneys… Please tell me all possible as to how I can make the remaining years of my life count for the most to help the greatest number of people…”
B7. 4/9/44 On the basis of correspondence, the following questions were formed by IMG: (1) What causes serious lack of endurance? (2) What more can be done to keep thyroid gland under control? (3) What can I do to remedy hot flashes? (4) What is causing insomnia? (5) Is ulcer healing properly? (6) What is the condition of gall bladder? (7) What is the condition of kidneys?
