This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 15th day of April, 1944, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [5027], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the book, THERE IS A RIVER.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. (Notes read to and transcribed by Jeanette Fitch.)]
Time of Reading Set bet. 3:30 to 4:30 P. M. Eastern War Time. …, Mass.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them.
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here.
-
We have a combination of disturbances. These arose first from a congestion or the flu, and then poisons settled in the lymph circulation through those areas above the 3rd and 4th dorsal.
-
This increased circulation causes puffiness under the eyes and inflammation in the lachrymal ducts. Thus the swelling of face and eyes, and the activity of the kidneys becomes involved through sympathetic reaction.
-
We would have at least five or six good relaxing adjustments osteopathically, with special reference to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th dorsal and the 3rd cervical, and about the head and neck. These should be of a relaxing nature, not stimulating, with special reference to those areas indicated, but relax the whole body.
-
Through such periods we would increase the eliminations, using such an eliminant as broken doses of Caldwell’s Syrup of Figs or Syrup of Pepsin; half a teaspoonful every hour and a half for a whole day at the time. This is preferable to taking three to four spoonsful one time, for in small doses the system absorbs these properties.
-
After taking these properties for a whole day, then flush the system with two heaping teaspoonsful of Sal Hepatica dissolved thoroughly in a glass of water.
-
These will bring much better conditions for the body.
-
When we remove the pressures, we will remove the conditions causing irritation to the trachea and bronchi. Thus the corrections osteopathically, that should be of the relaxing nature and not stimulating.
-
For at least twenty minutes each day, but the same period each day, we would apply Glyco-Thymoline Packs over the eyes. Then cleanse with plain luke warm water and apply a poultice of scraped Irish potato. These should be old potatoes, of course, (and all those in this particular section are old at this season of the year). Scrape the potato, apply on gauze and lay directly over the eyes, letting remain for at least twenty minutes. Afterwards cleanse the eyes with a mild antiseptic solution.
-
Doing these we will clear the conditions and bring about near to normal conditions.
-
We are through with this reading. [Note: In most cases when EC reached the end of a reading he would say: “Ready for questions”. In this case however, he did not do so.]

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 5/6/44 Letter: “Thank you very much for the reading… I am sure I am going to get results. I am enclosing the card of the doctor to whom I went, and surely God must have had a hand in it because, though I knew nothing of it, Dr. W. I. L. [Dr. Olive B. Williams, D.O.] owns the book ‘There Is A River’, has read it, and passed it along to others, and is very much interested. She is thrilled to be able to work with you and will cooperate to the fullest extent.”
R2. 6/24/44 Letter: “As I know you want to hear from me whether the news is good or bad, will say that in accordance with your reading 4/15/44, and the instructions you gave me, I have tried to follow out verbatim everything I was to do. I have had 11 treatments (you suggested 6 or 7) by Dr. W. I. L., a most understanding and cooperative osteopathic physician. To date, I have had no improvement whatsoever, either to the swelling of my eyes nor my asthma. The doctor insists that my worst eye is more open than it was, but I know the condition so well and am so anxious to get relief after so many years of distress, that I would so gladly admit it if it were so. However, there is no use in saying what I believe to be untrue. Thanking you for your interest in my case…”
R3. 6/29/44 Dr. W. I. L.’s letter: “In the spring, a Mrs. [5027] came to me for treatments, having been advised by you in a reading to try osteopathy. She gave me a copy of the advice you gave her, and together, we have followed it out. I promised her to make this report to you, which is only fair, for you must know already very well, that some of your readings promote cure and others do not, altogether. I read your book last summer, was much impressed with it and was very much pleased to work with some one who had received a reading from you. We started with high courage and faith, both of us. Mrs. [5027]‘s condition is a disfiguring left eye that gives her grotesque profile. When she is interested in her own affairs and forgets it she is reminded of it by persons who accost her on the street, or the bus, and embarrass her by making remarks. It has been a thoughtless and cruel torture to which she has been submitted. The diagnosis made some time ago of angioneurotic edema does not lessen the handicap, for that gives the impression that it might be temporary, and it has persisted now with increasing annoyance for 7 years.
I am disappointed myself that she has not gained more under the 10 treatments I have given her, besides the local applications and medication you suggested. You know as well as I do that the emotional side of this type of trouble aggravates it, and can mitigate what seemed at first to be of benefit. The smooth swollen tissue around the bulging eye became covered with tiny fine wrinkles. Instead of 2 layers of swelling below the eye, it became one only and she was able to open her left eye as wide as the right (which has only some swelling of the upper lid). Looking at her straight ahead, the glasses mask the swelling and the eyes do not look far from normal. It is the profile that attracts attention. My suggestion to her now is to have a ‘blinder’ made to cover up the left outer eye. She thinks if others could not see it and make remarks she would not mind it so much. At present no glasses are made for this type of protection, but I feel sure that she could get a special priorities order from her eye doctor and get a pair of glasses made with this arrangement. Emotional disturbances have been coming into her life, but she feels that she can cope with evicting undesirable tenants, and cleaning up the flat herself for a new tenant, if folks stop looking at her. Whether she has the necessary faith I do not know. She says she believes in prayer, yet her fears counteract her faith in any type of healing she has received thus far.
Perhaps you think I have gone beyond my professional attitude when I go into the state of my patient’s soul, but I realize that faith in the cure is a powerful help in any trouble, and self forgetfulness is necessary to reduce a handicap from paramount importance to comparatively unimportant consideration. She has asthma and has a very hoarse voice, a harsh voice, but that is not one of her complaints. If others cannot see her handicap, she does not take it so seriously. However, I have helped her asthma, and she has enjoyed many good nights’ sleep. If she continues, I feel that I can help her still more, but her faith in us both dwindles. She is going on a vacation. I hope she will return in the fall for more help than I have been able to give her to date. I admire your ability and its demonstration. God bless you and your work.”
R4. 3/31/50 Questionnaire sent to Dr. W. I. L. and Mrs. [5027].
R5. 5/18/50 Dr. W. I. L.’s reply: “I have no further report to make on this patient, for she did not return.”
R6. 5/21/50 Mrs. [5027]‘s reply: “I am still suffering from asthma to a great degree, and also have eye swelling. Have consulted doctors in several cities, and was operated on one eye 4 years ago in New York. Some relief, but no cure as to date. Nobody understands what I have or what causes it. Am sorry to say I had no help whatever from the suggestions in my reading, but neither have I had from numerous other sources.”
R7. 10/21/52 No record of verbal or written contact on this case since 5/21/50.
Background
Background
B1. 11/1/43 Letter: “My attention was called to the most interesting book about you and your work, written by Mr. Thomas Sugrue. It has impressed me so much that I cannot help writing to ask if you think you could or would help me. I have had an affliction for about 13 years, for which I have consulted numerous doctors and clinics, but in spite of all their experiments, am getting worse all the time. They all call it an allergy but cannot find the cause and therefore not the cure.”
B2. 1/15/44 Letter: ”…I have been so uncomfortable for the past few weeks that I haven’t been able to really read and digest the papers you sent me until today. However, I feel so strongly, after having read the wonderful story of what you have been able to do for people with your wonderful gift… I do hope you will find it possible to help me as I am sure after so many years, no one else can…”
B3. 3/29/44 Case history and questions submitted previous to reading: “One morning about 10 years ago, while under treatment for a knee which was bothering me, I woke up with a badly swollen left eye. When I went to my doctor about my knee, I showed him my swollen eye, and he ordered me to have my teeth x-rayed. Seven bad teeth were removed, but no improvement was noted in my eye. It continued to be very swollen each morning, becoming almost normal by evening. I then began a procession of visits to various specialists and clinics and was told to eliminate feathers, wool blankets, house dust, etc. as well as all sorts of food for periods of time. I was told I had asthma and that allergy was causing my trouble.
After all sorts of tests, shots, etc., which have continued at intervals up to the present time, I am still getting worse all the time. It is very disfiguring and makes me very conspicuous wherever I go, and I am always uncomfortable, feeling as though there was something in my eye all the time, watering, materating, etc. I try to think as little about it as I can, and to continue my normal life as much as possible, but it is not easy. While my vision is not affected, I do see double close to, of course. (1) What caused my eye to become swollen in the first place? (2) What can I do to overcome my affliction? (3) What can be done to relieve coughing spells?”
B4. 3/29/44 Letter: ”…Am anxiously waiting for April 15, at which time Mr. Cayce has promised to try to help me. If not too late, would like to add that I have been very much worse lately and especially am coughing so that I am just racked with it and lose plenty of sleep. I suppose an asthmatic cough is affected by changes in temperature and our weather has been very changeable of late…”
