This Psychic Reading was given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 4th day of May, 1944, in accordance with request made by the self - Miss [5034], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the article in Coronet.

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also the treatment for the cure and relief of this body. You will speak distinctly at a normal rate of speech, answering the questions as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [5034].

3. As we find, there are disturbing conditions that prevent the better physical functioning of the body. These we find arise from the lack of proper chemical balance in the system, and the effects produced in the glandular system are that of crystallization in the tendons and muscles, giving the effect of arthritic conditions in the extremities of the body. These may be materially aided. It will require patience, persistency and consistency in the activity, not only of the body but of those who would aid in making the administrations for these disturbances.

4. We would begin first and take one drop of Atomidine in water, each morning before any meal is taken. Do this for five mornings, and leave off five mornings. Then begin again, and take two drops each morning, in water, before the meal is taken. Then on the sixth day, take five drops.

5. The next day have a saturated solution Epsom Salts Bath, or nearly saturated. Put about twenty pounds of Epsom Salts in forty gallons of water. Do give the body massage throughout the Bath, this especially to the limbs, arms and across the abdomen. Have the water as hot as the body can stand, and as hot as those giving the massage can stand their hands in same. Keep in the Bath at least twenty to thirty minutes, and when showered or sponged off, massage the body thoroughly, especially the sacral and lower limbs; the brachial area or across the shoulders and chest, and the upper limbs, with equal portions of Olive Oil and Peanut Oil. To each two ounces of Olive Oil and two ounces of Peanut Oil, add one-quarter ounce of Lanolin (melted).

6. After this has been given, rest for three days, then begin all over again with one drop of Atomidine for five days, but after the five days, rest only one day, then begin with the two drops then for five days, and then five drops in the sixth day, and again have the Epsom Salts Bath in the same manner as given before, followed with the massage.

7. After the second bath, begin with the short-wave three amperes, and this should be applied to the sacral center, and the brachial center. This should be given for not too long a period, but follow these with massages which should be given over the whole body, using the oils indicated. Do this twice a week until at least eight are taken, then rest for a period of a week, and begin again with Atomidine.

8. This followed through until three Baths are given, after the third bath and massages are given, we should find relief. While there may be changes all along, it should be considered that then there will be a change for the better.

9. Leave off all salt, or any stimulants such as seasonings of any kind, except Cayenne Pepper. Use this in the preparation of leafy vegetables, and in fowl or chicken. All salt is not to be entirely left out, but use only kelp or deep sea salt, or the better grade of the Kosher salt.

10. Do keep the mental attitude in that way of the hopefulness, and apply the ideals of spiritual purposes in the conversation in the daily life. Do this, and when there have been ten to fifteen weeks of following these treatments, we would give further instructions for this body.

11. We are through with this reading.

R1. 5/17/44 Letter: ”…I sent for the Atomidine, which I received yesterday. This morning I took my first drop. I’ve carefully figured out each step of the treatments covering 15 weeks, and they will cover the time up to August 30. One thing is puzzling me though, and unless you will explain it to me, I’m afraid I won’t be able to follow the line of treatments accurately… ‘After the end bath, begin with the SHORT-WAVE, 3 AMPERES…’ I have underlined the words I don’t know. Will you please explain these terms, so that I may do just as I am supposed to? Thank you.”

R2. 5/22/44 EC’s reply: ”…You shouldn’t have any trouble getting the short wave treatments. These are electrical treatments and many physicians there, I am sure, give such treatments. If you should have any trouble, contact Mrs. [2553] of …, Milwaukee… She is a nurse and well acquainted with the work, and I am sure she will be glad to help you.

R3. 7/7/44 Letter: ”…Up to the present, I have followed through carefully, and today had my 5th short-wave treatment. Through Mrs. [2553] whose name you gave me, I contacted a E. G. A. [Dr. Egan [PhT.]] who read my reading and is giving me the short-wave treatments. First though, x-rays were taken of my upper and lower spine and hands to find the extent of the disease. Anxious as I am - up to date, I haven’t noticed any real improvement, but I can’t expect it so soon, considering the length of time I’ve had the arthritis. Two things I have noticed, though: night sweating seems to be gone, and my joints are not quite as painful. I’m looking forward to more improvement, but I’m not impatient. Please advise me as to when the second reading will be.”

R4. 7/12/44 EC’s reply: ”…Yes, I think it is entirely too soon to determine whether there will be real benefit from the treatments suggested. I believe that if you will follow through just as the information has suggested, you will get help… I am glad that you got in touch with Mrs. [2553]. If you see her again, give her our love…”

R7. 1/7/69 Sister’s letter to HLC requested a copy of the Reading:

I have been reading books and newspaper articles about your father and am interested. My prayers as a child were nightly, “God, please help me to make my sister better!” It would interest me now to know if any reference was made to previous lives in that reading. She is now 55 yrs. old. Had started and continued advised treatment for some years. Has continued with a chiropractor to this day. There has been some improvement through the years. As being able to open her jaws with the chin lifting up from less anklosis. There has been a considerable straightening of the one leg which was forced inward, and a straightening of the hips which were bent to one side. But of course she has never had her hands to her face or walked steps, etc. since she became afflicted at 4 yrs. of age which seemingly is rheumatoid arthritis. I happen to be a registered nurse, marvelous health, and could never understand why two girls in a family should be so different. Since reading of reincarnation the last few years, my mind seems to be at rest from probing that “why”, (I can accept the karma or cause and effect theory), but I still spend many hours wondering what this sister had done in previous lives to be paying such a price of pain, entire crippled body, humility, never to have love, home, children. Her mind has always been keen. This has seemed to make it harder for her to bear. She has practically become a religious fanatic, self centered, and demanding and drinks almost a water glass full of mixed liquors in order to sleep at night.

My own quest for knowledge of life and understanding prompts me to make the request of you, which if the reading included any passages as “entity previously”, I don’t believe we would have accepted or understood it years ago. Now I feel there would be a chance for it’s acceptance and resignment towards enlightenment.

B2. 11/7/43 Letter: “Nearly 2 months ago, I wrote you and I have received no reply. I am sure this has been no fault of yours… If you would be so kind, perhaps from one of your wonderful readings, I might learn something to help me…”

B3. 12/20/43 Letter: “I have received your booklet, ‘Edgar Cayce, His Life and Work’, also a copy of a reading on arthritis. Both were very interesting to me… Your letter stated that readings are booked for a year ahead… I am sure that you will give me as early a reading as possible; you see, I am so anxious to have one, for I have a strong feeling that you will be able to tell me something really helpful. May I explain my feeling about this a bit further?

I had 3 very good friends who, like myself, had arthritis. All 3 are dead now - 2 of them died quite a few years ago, and the last one only several years ago. I have always felt, not knowing why, that there is a particular reason why I have lived. Oddly enough, my condition has not grown worse, and in some ways it has improved a little. However, each of my joints is very stiff, and I cannot get either hand to my face, and I have to use crutches to walk. Despite all this, I am not twisted and deformed as many arthritis cases are. Some times I look at myself and just wonder why it is that I can’t bend, considering how well I look. My fingers are the most flexible joints of my body, and I use them very well in doing many things, one of them, my photo-retouching, which I do 8 and sometimes many more full hours a day. For many years I’ve wished and prayed for work that I could do well and which would be worth while doing. The suggestion to the answer came in a magazine article that I, by mere chance, came upon over 3 years ago. But now I don’t believe it was chance. I believe it was God putting the answer into my hands. Then this past summer I bought a copy of ‘Coronet’ to read coming home on the train from my vacation. The first article I read was about your work. I believed then, as I do now, that that was another answer to a prayer of many years standing.

For 26 years of my 30, I’ve been handicapped and perhaps because of that length of time I should consider myself beyond help, as any doctor would, I know (I was considered exactly that at 7 already), but in my heart I can’t believe it. So you may understand now my anxiety for a reading.

Here is a resume of my present condition: Have small amount of movement in every joint except elbows. Almost constant soreness in one joint or another. Bad acid condition which causes my tongue to become raw and sore when eating certain foods. Terribly itchy skin, sometimes dry to the point of flakiness. Sweat badly at night.”
