GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time, giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them.
-
EC: Here we have the result of very poor care at the period of presentation, and the injury produced at that time is the source of all the disturbances, in the lack of ability of coordination with the cerebro-spinal and sympathetic systems, and the organs of the sensory system.
-
Thus those areas in the head, the reflexes in the head from the brain centers to the central nervous system, in the areas particularly in the upper dorsal and in the 1st and 2nd cervical, are the sources of disturbances.
-
As we find, hydrotherapy and physiotherapy would best be applied by a sympathetic osteopathic physician. This done consistently and persistently will aid gradually in improving the coordination through the body-forces and the reflexes from the brain to the body centers.
-
We find that the use of the short-wave here would be most beneficial, but before the short-wave is used, we would apply packs that will aid, not only in opening the pores, but will react by radiation upon the motor circulation and centers where there is the discordant activity between the nerves and the sympathetic and cerebro-spinal centers, as in the brachial centers and in the areas in the upper dorsal and 1st cervical. We would use these packs of Glyco-Thymoline and Lavoris, for these will tend to carry through the respiratory and perspiratory systems and the absorption glands, the tendency towards alkalinity to the body.
-
Do these and we will find better conditions for this body.
Dr. Amy Cochran would be in sympathy with the treatments, and long periods will give better reactions for this body.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Do you refer to Dr. Amy Cochran of San Marino, California? (A) San Marino, California, Dr. Amy Cochran. Do these and we will make better conditions in this body. In nine months from now, we would give further instructions. It may be necessary to use the radio-active vibrations to the nerve forces by radiation through low or short-radio active electrical forces, but this will be determined by the response the body makes.

B1. 9/25/43 Father’s telegram: “My 10 year old son spastic. Just read Coronet. Will you help?”
B2. 9/26/43 Mother’s letter: “We sent you a telegram last night after reading an article in the September ‘Coronet’. In your reply to us you stated, ‘Sorry, impossible to make appointment any time soon. Write us.’ I didn’t fully understand what you meant. One reason I was so anxious for you to take up our problem was that we recently changed therapy in the treatment for our son. The last x-rays show a space between the first and second cervical vertebra and an underdeveloped left hip. Our son has been under treatment throughout his life, and has remained a very well adjusted happy child. He is above the average in intelligence with an I.Q. of 138. These new treatments are very painful for him, and if we had assurance that they were going to benefit him, we could keep on with them. He was a premature baby, weighing 3 pounds at birth. Labor lasting 86 hours contributed to the injury. He uses his hands very well, and has learned to walk fairly well, but he has difficulty with his speech… I know you are going to be able to advise us and that you are interested in helping all people… My son is a joy to have, and we are grateful that he came to us.”
B3. 11/14/43 EC’s reply: ”…We have made an appointment for your son for the afternoon of May 4th. I wish it were possible to give you an emergency appointment…”
B4. 4/26/44 Mother’s letter: “As our appointment with you is for May 4, I thought it wise to state my questions at this time. Our son was born 10/26/33, at …, Calif. The labor lasted 86 hours with a breech presentation. He weighed about 3 pounds, and was placed in an incubator and was tubular fed until he weighed 5 pounds. He has ‘spastic paralysis’ and a speech problem that we have been told is ‘blocked speech’. He walks with some difficulty. At the present time he complains of headaches, but he has just recently recovered from scarlet fever. He attends a special school, and has an I.Q. of 138.
(1) What caused this condition? (2) Will he be able to overcome it? (3) If therapy is indicated, would the following be satisfactory: a. Mrs. Florence Sloan, 595 South St., Glendale (therapist); b. Dr. Amy Cochran, Institute of Physio-Synthesis, 2450 Mission, San Marion, Calif. (osteopath); c. Dr. J. T. Henderson, 565 N. Lake St., Pasadena, (chiropractor); d. Dr. E. D. Ulrich, 932 S. Crenshaw, Los Angeles (radio-onyx); e. Lewis School for Stammerers, 939 S. Serrano Ave., Los Angeles, (speech therapist); f. Elsie Willson, 4491 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles (speech correction). (4) Is there a reason for this condition other than a birth injury? We pray that you will be able to council and advise us so that he may have a full and useful life. With gratitude.”
