This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 5th day of May, 1944, in accordance with request made by the uncle - Mr. […], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., via the book, THERE IS A RIVER.

Time of Reading Set bet. 3:30 to 4:30 P. M. Eastern War Time. …, N.J.

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them.

2. EC: [EC repeated suggestion in undertone.] Yes, [5050], …, N.J., … Road.

3. Yes, this is a baby. As we find, there are hindrances [which] as we find may be aided.

4. We would first have osteopathic adjustments, gently but specifically made, in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cervical and 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th dorsals. Thus we may overcome the injury produced to the organs of the sensory system from the fall which has injured first the 2nd and 3rd dorsals and the 2nd and 1st cervicals; thus causing, as indicated in the present, hindrances to the hearing.

5. Add the low, low form of electrical vibrations with the osteopathic] corrections. These should be with the Wet Cell Appliance used as the Radio-Active [Appliance] is ordinarily used, or: Attach to the body and let the low current flow through the body, though make this the larger quantity of two and one-quarter pounds of Copper Sulfate, see? though of course there should be an increase in the amount of acid [sulfuric?] and the zinc in regulation with this increase, see?

6. Do not use any of the solutions, but just the low electrical force, and this attach to the wrist and ankle, or opposite side of the body one time, and then the next time to the 1st and 2nd cervicals, and then to the ankle or to the wrist, or then change to both wrists.

7. But do have daily for at least four or five days osteopathic corrections, and when the centers are in their correct positions, the mother may then give massages with cocoa butter, following the morning bath, and then about once a week have the osteopathic corrections, see?

8. We should bring near to normal reactions, unless there becomes some other disturbance than that indicated.

9. There is not the drying as yet of the fluids in the inner ear. There is indicated in the dorsal and cervical areas that there are hindrances to the circulation; hence the drying appearance that is seen in the area of the drum itself.

10. Do that.

R1. 5/10/44 Mother of [5050] wrote: “My brother has just sent on the record of the reading given for my wee deaf boy. We shall proceed according to instructions. I have an osteopath in mind who may be able to administer treatments. I shall notify you of the osteopath’s name, as you requested. The reading is most encouraging, and we shall certainly be faithful to instructions. May I express my thanks to you.”

R2. 5/12/44 EC’s reply: ”…I am glad to know that you were pleased with the information that was given for your little boy. I do hope that you will give the suggestions a real trial, and I believe you will get results…”

R3. 5/12/44 Mother’s letter: “In reference to your reading for my son, I have found an osteopath who is willing to follow the instructions given. There are, however, a number of questions we would like to ask. The most important deal with the Wet Cell Appliance. Because of my difficult financial position, the osteopath, Dr. J. O. H. [Edward Johnson, D.O.] of …, N.J., and I, along with an electrical engineer, a Mr. S. I. E. [Siebert], are anxious to know if we could obtain directions for making the appliance ourselves. It seems from the directions you have sent that it is a fairly simple mechanism. The materials would also be available. One of the things that baffles us in the actual construction is the location of the smaller jar through which the nickel rod runs to the nickel plate. The other major question is: Would it be possible to use a dry cell to carry this low frequency to the body? According to standard laws of electricity, the particular form of generation does not effect the electricity itself. In the work that you have done in this connection, what is the basis of using the Wet Cell instead of the dry cell? Is there a difference in the result, and why? One of the reasons for making this inquiry is that my son is a very active child, and the administration of the Wet Cell Appliance is apt to be distinctly dangerous because of the sulfuric acid. It is going to be extremely difficult to keep him quiet. Only because I fully realize the importance of carrying out instructions implicitly am I making these inquiries. I would appreciate further enlightenment.”

R4. 5/16/44 EC’s reply: “I have yours of the 12th regarding the Appliance. There is no objection to giving you complete directions for making the Appliance; however, we know from some 40 years of experience that you would be many months getting the necessary materials together for making the Appliance. The dry cell will not do for this sort of work. There are occasions when this has been given but not in this case; it would be too strong for your boy. Write to Mr. Godfrey and tell him to send you an Appliance, and put it on my account. When you are through with it, return it to Mr. Godfrey. I am sure the information had it in mind that the Appliance be used on your boy when he is sleeping. He will not feel any vibrations and it will not awaken him; rather it will tend to keep him asleep. Please do this won’t you? I would like very much to contribute something toward helping the young man for your brother’s sake. I liked him very much. Hoping this will prove satisfactory and that the doctor will work with you all the way through…”

R5. Mother’s letter to A. M. Godfrey: “According to a letter from Mr. Cayce, he has asked me to write you for the Wet Cell Appliance to be charged to his account, and when we are finished with it, we will return it to you, as per Mr. Cayce’s instructions.” [In 1950, A. M. Godfrey turned over to A.R.E. whatever data he had in his possession concerning orders for Wet Cell Appliances. However, in this case, there is no record of an order for a refill, or any correspondence showing that the Wet Cell Appliance had been returned.]

R6. 7/24/44 Mother’s letter: “My brother showed me your recent letter to him, and we are both very grateful to you for your interest in wee [5050]‘s problem. As my brother wrote you, we have been delayed in beginning operations as instructed in the reading due to another bad fall, followed by mumps. You will be pleased to hear, however, that we started last week on Monday. Dr. J. O. H. [Johnson] administered osteopathic adjustments every afternoon, Monday through Friday. Every night after my son was asleep, I administered the Wet Cell Appliance as instructed by Mr. Godfrey, for 4 nights. Then we let off until last night, when the Wet Cell Treatments were resumed. In the application of the Wet Cell we have had some difficulty getting my son to be quiet. Often the mere putting on the attachments to his body awakens him, and then I am obliged to wait until he quiets down again before I try again. He pulls them right off otherwise. Often, he does not get to sleep until 9 or 10 P.M., so that the treatments come after this.

“This week we are applying the cocoa butter as directed. We are giving these just before his noon nap. He is more relaxed and ready for such at this time, than he would be in the morning. Do you feel that this is all right? We are most anxious to do this correctly, and that is why I am asking these questions and telling you exactly what we are doing. The osteopathic adjustments will be given weekly beginning this week. There was no indication in the instructions as to how long we should continue these operations. Have you any suggestions in this regard? The osteopath says that there seemed to be no stiffness in the regions where he was instructed to work. We are most anxious to follow your instructions…”

R7. 8/15/44 Mother’s letter: ”…We started the osteopathic treatments in conjunction with the Wet Cell treatments about a month ago or a little more. The first week, the osteopath gave treatments in the regions directed for 5 days, and has since given a weekly treatment. Following the first week of osteopathic treatments, we have given cocoa butter massages every day just before his afternoon nap. In connection with the Wet Cell treatments there have been a number of difficulties. In the first place, it is very difficult, sometimes impossible to keep him still, even though operations are commenced while my son is asleep. I have some times stayed up until after 1 o’clock waiting for him to quiet down. At the same time, we have had great difficulty to sleep at all during the night. Inasmuch as I go to business during the day for 5 days a week, I felt it advisable to give the treatments at night after he had gone to sleep. In that way, we could be consistent throughout. I would be very much interested in any comments you may have or any suggestions as to procedure. As for results, the doctor has found no tenseness in the regions affected; we have noticed, however, an increasing interest in a large alarm clock with a loud tick. My son holds it up to his ear as if listening; then holds it to the ear of the person with him. The interest is quite protracted for a child of his age, who frequently flits from one thing to another with considerable rapidity. I don’t suppose there is any way of knowing what progress we are making or whether we are doing exactly the right thing, especially in relation to the timing of the various operations…”

“I have discussed the whole situation with my brother, by whom the arrangement for the reading was made. My brother is just about to sail for Europe to aid in the civilian reconstruction program…”

R8. 8/18/44 EC’s reply: ”…It has been necessary for me to be away for some time, and I am just getting back to correspondence. I am pleased to know that you are getting started on the treatments for your son, and I believe the closer you follow through, the better will be the results. I am sure that you recall that the Appliance has to be recharged every 30 days; that is, new solution. I don’t know just how long this has to be kept up. It depends entirely on circumstances, but if it will bring help, I am sure it won’t make any difference to you… Sometimes, of course, an osteopath disagrees and will say there is no confusion, where the information indicates certain treatment should be given. Yet more times than not, results are obtained if the information is followed. It is up to you and the doctor… The only way I know of to get any sure report, is to have a check reading. We will want to do this anyway and very soon, if it is possible…”

R9. 10/31/44 Letter: “In the last 6 weeks, some very distressing things have been occurring with my son… I pursued your recommendations with care up until the middle of September, at which time we moved to New York so that my son could go to a special school for the deaf. We had many difficulties applying the treatments, as I wrote to you earlier because we could not keep him asleep. This situation became much worse after moving, and my son spent most of the night awake playing, and for the last 6 weeks having tantrums of one sort or another. Our whole family life has been completely upset - no one in the house can get any rest day or night, and in view of the fact that I support the children from my job, it is essential that I keep reasonably in one piece. We have come to the point where I have been getting in the last period 2 to 4 hours of sleep a night. I am greatly distressed for the consequences to my son and his brother, and am writing to see whether you would still be able to give us a check reading as you suggested in the summer. Consultation with doctors has proved fruitless, and I believe that as Browning would say: ‘glory from defect may arise.’ Could you fit in a check reading? If so, please let us know, and be sure to take note of the new address.”

R10. 11/6/44 IMG’s letter: “Due to Mr. Cayce’s continued illness, we are unable to get your son’s Check Physical Reading… We would suggest that you continue to use the information already given…”

R11. 1/28/48 Test mailing to mother. Whereabouts unknown.

R12. 7/50 While the uncle was overseas his interest in the A.R.E. continued, as evidenced by his correspondence.

R13. 7/27/50 Questionnaire-letter sent to uncle.

R14. 9/21/50 Uncle’s reply to questionnaire-letter: “The form which you sent to me regarding the reading for my nephew has been forwarded to his mother who now lives in …, Conn. Unfortunately the treatment prescribed for his deafness was unsuccessful, and I do not believe that it was tried again.”

R15. 9/10/52 No verbal or written contact on this case since 9/21/50.

R16. 5/22/71 Brother wrote: “Would you please send a copy of the rdg. and any subsequent rdgs., as the rdgs. were either ignored or improperly administered. Thank you.”

R17. 6/2/71 A copy of 5050-1 was sent to brother.

R18. 4/8/77 Brother of [5050] visited A.R.E. and said he never received copy of the reading. He was given another copy of 5050-1.

R19. 11/9/77 Brother visited A.R.E. and requested copy of 5050-1 stating he didn’t know whether his brother received the previous copy he had sent to him.

B1. 3/28/44 Mother’s letter: “‘There Is A River’ has prompted me to write this letter and ask for help. I have 2 boys, age 2 1/2 and 4 1/2. The older boy is quite normal in every sense. The younger boy, I discovered to be deaf at the age of 11 1/2 months. The doctors have given no hope that he will be able to hear. Their viewpoint is that if there is no nerve there in the ear, nothing can be done to manufacture one. As a possible hope, the adenoids and tonsils were removed. Since then, I have accepted this dictum and proceeded to study methods of teaching lip reading and voice, and making every effort I could to help him adjust to a normal sort of life.

“He has a remarkably good disposition, but is often very difficult to handle and my patience is often lacking. An added difficulty is that my husband and I are separated. The first occurrence of this came 2 weeks before I discovered [5050] to be deaf. We have tried reconciliation twice without success. Now I am convinced that I must carry on alone. My thought has been to take a job to earn the necessary money for his schooling which will start in the autumn. He has a tutor now. We must move to …, N.Y. for schooling. It means a very drastic change for all of us. To add to the difficulty, the type of work I really like to do is not very remunerative. I like to work with people and for people. This is a major problem that I must decide, inasmuch as it affects the children. We are now living in the suburbs where the children can play out of doors and lead a far more natural life than they would lead in the city. Also, if I take a job, their afternoon after school hours will be in charge of someone else, and I am not sure that I feel quite satisfied with this. Now then, these are the worst problems. Would it be possible for you to give my son a reading soon? The whole situation seems urgent to me, of course, because of so many decisions in the immediate offing… When [5050] was about 6 or 7 months old he had a bad fall in the car. It may be that this affected his hearing.”

B2. 4/20/44 Uncle’s letter: ”…When I saw you in Virginia Beach, I mentioned the case of my nephew, age 2 years 8 months, who is apparently deaf - at least he has not yet responded to any sound; consequently his speech has not developed. My own reading is scheduled for May 5. My interest, as you know, is deep and spiritual, but I feel that this golden opportunity should be given over to this baby boy. Would you mind if I transferred my reading to him? My sister has written you recently, therefore I am enclosing the form which she has filled out. I trust that the fee that I sent for membership will cover the reading. At the close of the reading, I understand that questions may be asked. They are as follows: (1) Is there any evidence that the nerve in the middle ear is existent? (2) Is the deafness partial or complete? (3) If the nerve is there but not alive, is there any treatment which might build it up? (4) Is there any difference in the mechanism between the left ear and the right ear? (5) If the child is completely deaf, was he born so, and why? (6) Is there any evidence that deafness was caused by a fall? (7) Have any other parts of the body been injured which would affect hearing? (8) Would infant stomach and internal digestive disorders affect hearing?… All our hopes for this child’s possibility of hearing lie within your wonderful powers. Certainly more important than my humble troubles. Both my sister and I will meditate at the appointed hour. Would you please be so good as to send the reading direct to my sister… Thank you, dear Mr. Cayce. I trust that all are well in your household.”
