This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 20th day of April, 1944, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [5044], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the book, THERE IS A RIVER.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading Set bet. 10:30 to 11:30 A. M. Eastern War Time. …, La.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [5054].
-
As we find, the disturbances have been of rather long standing, and they affect the organs of the sensory system through inflammation and adhesions that have arisen from the use of properties that seared soft tissue in the nasal passages, throat and vocal cords.
-
These we find, are the sources of the trouble.
-
The present applications being made are beneficial. We do not find that they will restore to normal the affected areas, but they will contribute to the general welfare of the body.
-
We would use a spray of Glyco-Thymoline, just as near normal strength as can be held by the body; at first using 1/2 distilled water and 1/2 Glyco-Thymoline, as a spray for the nasal and antrum and those portions of the face.
-
Of evenings we would use Glyco-Thymoline Packs over the soft tissue of face. Do not apply heat to the area, though heat should be applied in other ways a little bit later.
-
We would use these regularly, the spray and the packs, preferably of evening as the body rests. Use the packs over the antrum and those portions of the bridge of the nose and cheek.
-
Also we would begin with osteopathic treatments; not merely corrections, though the chiropractor can give the massage if there would be the time taken to give it correctly - about three times a week. Have manipulations as well as corrections in the areas from the 4th dorsal to the 1st cervical, and of course, not bruising but gently massaging the body, the neck, head, shoulders, face, antrum, the mastoid area as well as chin, forehead, cheek, all those areas - so there is the breaking up and the eliminating of destroyed tissue. If the osteopathic treatments are taken instead of the chiropractic, then twice a week should be sufficient, if given properly; but these treatments can be carried on by the chiropractor if following these direction.
-
At least twice a week we would also have the short wave electrical treatments to relieve the inflammation, to aid in stimulating so that the tissues that has been injured would be gradually replaced, replenished, rebuilded, and not leave the scars in same - as will be accomplished by the proper manipulations as well as corrections in the manner outlined.
-
When giving the massage, use just enough Pine Oil to make the massaging easier - this is the preferable oil to use.
-
Do use that necessary to keep eliminations a little better. Use vegetable compounds as laxatives and eliminants.
-
Ready for questions.
-
We are through with this reading.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 5/25/44 Wife’s letter: “Received my husband’s reading on May 8, and on May 9 he consulted an osteopath, namely Dr. K. I. L. [Dr. John P. Kilb, D.O.], who seems very interested in his case and claims he has treated several cases similar to that of my husband. I feel quite sure he will cooperate. I am so disappointed the questions were not asked after the reading. You mention the present applications being made are beneficial but would not restore to normal the affected areas. Does that mean the treatments before the reading? I am anxious to know if everything being done is best for a quick recovery. Is it possible to have check reading?”
R2. 5/27/44 EC’s reply: ”…I am glad to know that you have an osteopath who will cooperate…as to the questions: we can’t ever tell when we will have the opportunity to ask questions, but we like to have them on hand so that we can ask them if possible. Apparently the information feels that it has given all that is necessary when it does not answer questions… The reading is referring to applications being made previous to the time of the reading. I would suggest that you wait until after the treatments given you in the reading have been applied for a while, before seeking a check-physical reading…”
R3. 6/15/44 Wife’s letter: “I cannot begin to tell you of our great joy over the reading you gave my husband… I have written you since, but as I saw no change then, I did not mention very much of it. He called to see the doctor on May 9, and when he weighed him on June 9 he had gained 6 1/2 pounds, which we think most encouraging. Dr. K. I. L. remarked that my husband is his pet patient, and claims he will very soon be well and strong…”
R4. 7/13/44 Wife’s telegram: “Can check reading be arranged soon. Husband weaker, although suggested treatment is being continued. Please wire.”
R5. 7/13/44 GD’s reply: “Impossible to make appointment due to Mr. Cayce’s illness. Sorry.”
R6. 7/15/44 Wife’s letter: ”…My husband has had two very good days since I wired you. Of course, I understand he will have his bad days as well as his good ones… The doctor is perfectly lovely to him, and assures him he shall be well and strong, but says it will be a long treatment…”
R7. 9/22/44 Wife’s letter: “We are staying at …, La. with my husband’s sister, as he has gotten so helpless he needs constant attention and she is able to care for him while I work. He is very much weaker, and has been unable to go to the doctor. The treatments I think have been very hard and tiresome on him. The doctor put the short wave for 20 or 25 minutes 3 times a week; ultra-violet 4 or 5 minutes - a strap across his chest and stomach which was connected to electricity, and then he massaged his neck and legs. For a few visits he put wet pads on his throat and back of neck, and they when connected drew his mouth and made him swallow very fast; and one time he put his right leg in a large glass jar and his leg moved about gently in it.
The doctor said all these things would aid the circulation. The day after his first treatment he was very sick. He felt as if he was choking, and for several weeks he spit up small pieces of mucous. That stopped for a while, and then last week he started to spit and choke again, an average of 8 times a day thick yellow sticky mucous about 2 inches square. It was very hard for him to get it up, and at times I had to work my finger in his mouth and pull it out.
I am very discouraged with the treatment, as it is 4 months, and there is no good change in him. The doctor says the excess mucous and saliva is due to paralysis of the throat. He has started him on a new powder for his muscles called Blycocoll. As my husband has been unable to eat, he advised me to feed him daily - 6 teaspoons high potency of yeast - 4 fresh eggs - 2 quarts of milk - 1 quart of orange juice - 3 tablespoons liver extract, and prunes or figs to aid bowel movement. Of course, he is not able to take all of this. I also added one cup chicken broth and one cup beef broth.
At one time my husband used to read the letters I wrote you, but of late, he takes no interest in anything so I did not tell you then of a report I received from a clinic that examined him. The many doctors claim his trouble to be bulbar paralysis with progressive atrophy, and as they do not know what caused it there was practically nothing could be done for him. Mr. Cayce, when I was a child, I heard of little children having wasteway, is that the same as atrophy? Old spiritual women particularly colored ones, used to rub them and make them well. I wonder if that would help him? Does bulbar mean from the brain? Is this thick secretion that he is bringing up from his lungs?…
Mr. Cayce, if possible after the reading will you ask these questions? (1) Any suggestions for a diet or tonic, or is the present one most beneficial? (2) Are Glyco-Thymoline packs correct? (3) What is the shadow that occasionally appears over his eye and lasts about 5 minutes? Does it have any connection with his condition? (4) Are the secretions he coughs up from the adhesions and inflammation, and is it helping him to clear it up? (5) Any suggestions to help him bring the secretions up without so much effort and exertion?… And with the help of dear God may this check reading bring him help…”
R8. 7/22/44 IMG’s reply: “The appointment for your husband’s Check Physical Reading has been set for October 18, 1944…”
R9. 10/25/44 Wife’s telegram: “Anxious to know if Check Reading was successful for my husband on October 18. When may I expect copy of same?”
R10. 10/30/44 GD’s reply: ‘Due to Mr. Cayce’s continued illness, we are unable to get your husband’s Check Physical Reading on October 18…”
R11. 3/24/50 Questionnaire sent to Mr. [5054]‘s wife and Dr. K. I. L. No reply from Dr. K. I. L.
R12. 6/28/50 Wife’s reply to questionnaire: “Chief complaint: Sinus, paralysis of nerve in palate. Date of onset May 1942, recurrence September 1942. Disease progressed slowly, often with periods of slight remission.
Physician’s Diagnosis and treatment: Progressive muscular atrophy with bulbar paralysis which is practically untreatable. In May 1942, [5054] had trouble in swallowing and his speech was becoming flat. By October he could swallow better, and liquids did not come back, through his nose. About March 1943, he again noticed great difficulty in swallowing and with speech. In addition, he noticed some difficulty in starting his urinary stream and some fibrillation in the muscles around his shoulders. He was put on Locophorex (?) Capsules - one 3 times daily and asked to take vacation because he did better after he rested. I was told according to the findings of the neurological examination, his condition to be so serious that little could be done. The city’s record showed cause of death as Combined Sclerosis of cord with paralysis combined sclerosis. Deceased 12/3/44.”
R13. 9/8/52 No record of verbal or written contact on this case since 6/28/50.
Background
Background
B1. Born 6/14/1900 in Louisiana; married; no children.
B2. 12/30/43 Wife’s letter: “I have just finished reading ‘There Is A River’. God has certainly given you an amazing power to help those in trouble and we hope and pray He will guide you to help my husband… His case is similar to your own at the time when you lost your voice. He has for several years been treated for sinus, and about October 1942, our friends and relatives noticed they were unable to understand him clearly due to his inability to form syllables in words. He also has trouble in swallowing, legs are becoming very weak, tires easily, poor appetite, hands are weak, particularly the thumb and index finger, and at times his shoulders, ribs, and neck have a slight twitching. One doctor claims drippings from the sinus has caused this condition; another, weak muscles in the vocal cords; another, a partially paralyzed nerve in the palate, and still another claims vitamin deficiency. He has had several blood tests, metabolism and spinal tests which have all proven negative as to infection in his body.
Mr. Cayce, my reading the book has given us both hope and courage, and only wish that I had heard of your wonderful work sooner, as I feel by this time my husband would be well and strong and able to speak without straining… An early answer will be deeply appreciated as we see no improvement by taking vitamins and tonics.”
B3. 1/44 Wife’s letter: “Any interest shown for an early reading would be so deeply appreciated as my husband’s condition seems to be growing worse. His legs are getting so weak.”
B4. 2/9/44 Case history and questions submitted by wife: “I am 43 years old and for several years have been treated for sinus. About October 1942, I noticed my inability to form syllables in words; very little control of my tongue; trouble to masticate food; cannot prevent from biting cheek and lower lip when chewing; trouble in swallowing food and liquids; great quantity of saliva collects in the mouth; muscles in face and lips very weak; body always seems tense and find difficulty in relaxing; knees have become weak; tire easily; poor appetite; hands are weak particularly the thumb and index finger and at times my shoulders, ribs, arms, and neck have a light twitching. One doctor claims drippings from the sinus has caused this condition; another, weak muscles in the vocal cords; another, a partially paralyzed nerve in the palate, and still another claims a vitamin deficiency. I have had several blood tests, metabolism, Wasserman and spinal tests - all have proved negative as to infection in my body. Also had my appendix removed August 1943, but that did not relieve my condition.
In October 1943, I heard that chiropractor manipulations have helped many, so I decided to see one. I am going 3 times a week for 4 months, and do not seem to show any improvement. I still have 2 more months’ treatment, as it is a 6 months treatment. So now, Mr. Cayce, I come to you for help. Will you please ask these questions at the reading: (1) System of treatment? (2) If treatment can be given in …, La., will you recommend the doctor? (3) How long after treatment has started should I see some improvement? (4) What precautions to follow so no recurrence? (5) What activity in past has caused this condition, and how long has it been coming on before I noticed it?”
B5. 3/3/44 Wife’s letter: ”…Mr. Cayce, I earnestly hope these postponements do not include cases that need immediate help or, those in serious distress, as my husband seems to be growing weaker and his only encouragement is your reading for him…”
B6. 3/20/44 Wife’s letter: ”…Mr. Cayce, I am anxious to read ‘A Search for God’… How soon after the reading can I expect to hear from you, as I would like to plan time off from my work in order to be with my husband, in case the reading suggests that he see a doctor. I hope I have not asked too many questions, but I am so eager to understand what is expected of me for a successful reading.”
B7. 3/24/44 GD’s card: “You should receive reading within a week after it has been given…”
B8. 5/4/44 Wife’s telegram: “Reading scheduled for my husband April 20. Was it successful? Anxiously waiting word from you. Wire answer collect.”
B9. 5/4/44 GD’s reply: “Transcription delayed. Reading sent air mail special today.”
