1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly and tell me the conditions you find at the present time, giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body, answering the questions as ask them.

2. EC: Yes, the body but nobody home. We have the body here.

3. As we find, there has already begun the softening of brain tissue from the lack of the coordinations in the flow of the gray and white nerve matter.

4. As we find, while this continues, little may be done, and these reactions will gradually grow more violent.

5. The sedatives as hypnotics, not narcotics, are the better administrations for the body to retain any semblance of rationality.

6. We do not find that there will be the complete regaining of normalcy for this body.

7. Ready for questions.

8. (Q) How long has he had this illness coming on, and what caused it? (A) The conditions arising from syphilitic reaction. Been coming on for some seventeen years.

9. (Q) What should the treatment be? (A) As has just been indicated, the best is the use of hypnotics, and not narcotics.

10. (Q) Will his condition ever improve? (A) As has just been indicated there is little opportunity here for ever regaining normalcy.

B1. 10/15/43 Sister’s letter: “I am the oldest of three. I had 2 brothers, [5061] who is now 44, and N. A. T. who could be 41 years old. Since childhood, they were great companions and very much attached to one another. The older one was much more dependent on the younger one for companionship, advice, etc. My younger brother was much more popular. He had many friends and was very much liked by those with whom he came in contact. [5061] had no friends and kept a good deal to himself when N. A. T. was not around. He spent many hours at the library and at home reading, also trying to work on inventions.

“Ten years ago, my younger brother married a very beautiful girl and was extremely happy. A year previous to his marriage, he left my mother’s home, and became a partner in our business. [5061] remained with my mother; she is divorced from our father. Both mother and [5061] disapproved of my sister-in-law; they felt N. A. T.’s wife was beneath them, and that they were unsuited to each other, especially physically. We all love my sister-in-law, and get along very nicely with her. In September 1942, my younger brother died very suddenly. The following October, we noticed that [5061] began to talk queerly about the F.B.I., being after him, and of people trying to persecute him; also insisted that our brother was poisoned by his wife. I realized that another terrible blow was befalling us. I was losing my brother in a much more terrible way. We visited several psychiatrists; the diagnosis was paranoid psychosis. The doctors advised that he enter a mental hospital. After several months of indecision, he finally entered the … Psychopathic. He spent 6 months there, and was getting worse. He is now at the … State Hospital. The doctors there say that his illness is of long standing; of many years; one of them told me he thinks that [5061] has not been well since he was 10 years old. I just finished reading that wonderful book ‘There Is A River’ and it has given me new hope. If there is anything we can do to save my brother, my father and I will not spare the expense. I am a wife, also a mother of 2 growing sons. My brother’s illness has cast a shadow on my life. My thoughts are ever with him, and happiness seems to have left me…”

B2. 1/30/44 Sister’s letter: “In regard to my application for a reading for my brother… I have stated in my letter and also in the application that my brother’s illness is mental, and that he is in a hospital for mental diseases. I have also indicated in my application that he is not a believer, but a skeptic… I hoped very much that you might be able to help him by a reading. He will not ask for it himself. In fact, he is in such a state of mind that he refuses to see me or any of his relatives. I would like to know if it would be possible for you to give that reading on May 9 and tell what caused his illness, if he can be cured, and if the … State Hospital is the proper place for him… Thanking you with all my heart.”

B3. 4/27/44 Sister’s letter: “I am writing to tell you that my brother has been transferred to the above address. His condition is getting worse. He has refused to see me or speak to me for one year now. May God help you to help us. I would like to know (1) Whether his condition will ever improve? (2) Will he ever be able to resume his life again in a normal society? (3) If he does, will he need supervision, and from whom? (4) How long bas he had this illness coming on, and what caused it? (5) Should I insist on seeing him, even if he refuses to see me? Hoping and praying for guidance…”
