This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 18th day of May, 1944, in accordance with request made by self, Mrs. [5117], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the article in Coronet Magazine.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Gussie W. Millaway, Stenos.]
Time of Reading Set bet. 10:30 to 11:30 A. M. Eastern War Time. …, Conn.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
Yes, we have the body here, [5117].
-
As we find, there are disturbances that not only cause physical distresses, but mental upsets, or that are the basis of same.
-
Thus, many of those experiences in associations with others are easily magnified by the entity, and are often taken as personal when such is not meant, and the body feels that it is not and yet is upset by the activities; giving a general dissatisfied condition, making unpleasantness in many of the activities when the entity is attempting to plan within itself for future relationships or activities.
-
There are physical defects, and as we find, these arise from an accident to the body. There was a fall that has caused an injury to the end of the spine, and this is the source of the disorders physically and mentally.
-
As we find, osteopathic adjustments should be made with special reference to the coccyx end of the spine, then coordinating the areas where cerebrospinal and sympathetic are closer in reactions one to another: the lumbar axis, the 9th dorsal, 6th and 7th dorsals, through the brachial center, 3rd cervical and about the head and neck, and the head axis or 1st cervical; then along the side of the face to the points of the chin, then temples between the eyes, back of ears, coordinating these corrections made in the lower end of the spine. Have at least twelve of these adjustments.
-
Take regularly the Radio Active Appliance. This is to be taken when the body rests, whether the afternoon or at night, but whenever there is tiring, whenever there are the upsets.
-
Then the attitude mentally: Set the self to study something of a spiritual nature. Here we would advise this body to read and apply “A Search for God”.
-
Do this.
-
Keep the plates very clean on the Radio Active Appliance. Do prepare for at least twenty minutes before it is attached to the body. Clean plates when taken from wrist and ankle. And do not cross these, but be sure to attach the same one first each time.
-
Thus [we] will bring better conditions for this body.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Will this relieve the pains in head? (A) It will relieve pains in head.
-
We are through with this reading.
Two copies to self (one for osteopath - Let us have the name and address of the one you choose to give the treatments.) Copy to Ass’n file ” for indexing

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 5/30/44 Letter: “I received the reading on May 23, and I did not have any treatments as yet. But I am to start them this Monday, and of course, the doctor I called was skeptical about the reading, but is willing to do as you say, and his name is Dr. [H. A. Thornbury, D.O.] of …, Conn. Will you please send the book ‘A Search for God’?…”
R2. 6/20/44 Letter: “I have had a reading in May 1944 and it said to have osteopathic treatments. I’ve had 8, and I see no improvements as yet. The reading said I should have at least 12. My mental condition is growing worse, and I had to use the Radio Active Appliance. But of course, I couldn’t afford both at the same time. I had to either have the osteopathic treatments first, and then save enough money to get the Appliance. Do you think that is the reason for my not getting any results as yet? My headaches are as much as before I had the treatments. The reading told about a fall, and I do remember that I did fall. And the doctor also said there is something wrong with my spine, but he would like to take X-rays first. I also have to wait for them before I can have any taken. He is working on my back as the reading tells, but I can’t say I feel any better, I am sorry to say; I did feel you were the last person I could seek to help me. I am going to keep up with the treatments.”
R3. 7/2/44 Letter: “Will you please give me another reading [Check Physical for 7/7/45 cancelled] if you can? I have had so many of those treatments, but I don’t seem to get any better, and now the doctor tells me to go into an institution. I don’t want to go if I can help it, but I can’t get myself out of this mental mess…the doctor told me I was a dementia praecox. Please Mr. Cayce, help me, if you can. I can’t get well by myself. Please give me another reading, to see if the doctor is doing the right thing for me. I don’t want to go to the institution. I feel I’d get worse if I do. Please, Mr. Cayce, see if I can be helped without going away from my home…”
R4. 8/24/44 Letter: “I’m writing you and trying to give you some information on how I feel. Well, I’m afraid of insanity, and I’m afraid of reality of my own feelings too; I get a feeling I’m going insane and it’s such a strong feeling I don’t know where I am. Nothing seems real to me. I’m afraid to think and afraid to live and I’m afraid of everything. These treatments you suggested in the first reading, the doctor faithfully followed them, but I feel no better. I haven’t gotten the Radio Active Appliance as yet. I tried to apply the ‘A Search for God’ but I guess it wasn’t real, or I’d have been well. I haven’t been out of my house in about 2 or more years. I’m in such terror constantly, I feel as though I can’t control myself. I just can’t seem to concentrate at all, my mind seems to be blank all the time, and most of all I have such irritating headaches all day long. Never a day passes that I don’t have these headaches. I have been to so many doctors and psychiatrist, and the latter had told me that I was insane and should go to an institution. I can’t help myself and I don’t want to go to an institution if I can be helped. Now can you tell me if I’m insane, and would you advise me to go to an institution? I’m in such torture I feel I can’t go on, I’m praying God will show me a way out or help me to live normally. I remain a friend.”
R5. 8/9/45 Letter: ”…Please can you possibly give me some information on finding a doctor in … who would know exactly how to carry out the suggestion given in my reading? I am certain that the doctor did not do what the reading had said, although he said he did, but the reading refers to the coccyx. I have noticed nothing had been done to that part of my body. Please is there any way of you finding out of anyone of the osteopathic doctors who would carry out the treatments?… I feel that if someone could give me the right treatment, I would get well…”
R6. 8/14/45 GD’s letter: “Did you go to Dr. [H. A. Thornbury, D.O.]? If you did not, I can only refer you to some of our Advisory Research Board members in other parts of the country… Dr. [D. J. Rathbun, D.O.] of …, Conn., Dr. Reilly of …, N.Y., Dr. Coulter of …, N.Y., and Dr. McLean of …, N.Y.”
R7. 9/27/46 Letter: ”…I hope you won’t mind my writing you about my personal problems… Well, here is my story: About 5 years ago, I started getting faint feelings and terrible headaches, so I went to a doctor and he told me to stop eating pork, so I did; it didn’t help me any. Then I went to another; he examined me and I told him of my headaches and was told to get my tonsils out, and teeth fixed, which I did; no relief. So I was told to go to a scychiratis [psychiatrist]. I went to one and told him my fears and headaches; was told to forget about it. I got worse every day, and felt I couldn’t stand it any longer; then I went to another sychriast [psychiatrist], and he told me to have electric shock treatments. I did, and still no relief from my fears and headaches. Then I read about your father, and begged for a reading which I had to wait almost half year, for it was when he must have been feeling ill; but I did get it, and I asked the doctor to come to my home and help me. I seen when I told him of the reading that he was skeptic, but was willing to do as I did beg him to try, and I did send for the Appliance, did use it and tried to apply the ‘Search for God’, and I still feel terrible. I have fear of everything, and am afraid to go out of doors, afraid to think. I wish you could understand what torture… My head and fears are with me constantly. When I showed the Appliance to the doctor, he laughed about it and said it was a crude thing. Of course, you can understand what I had to do to try them to believe in the reading and try to help me. Sorry to bother you, please sir, can I be helped any?”
Reply to questionnaire enclosed with above letter: “Constant headaches and fear of insanity for past 5 years. [Under heading in questionnaire Physician’s diagnosis and treatments, [5117] wrote: “Didn’t say”] Followed treatment for one month. Result failure.” [There is no record in A.R.E. files regarding an order for a Radio-Active Appliance from A. M. Godfrey.]
R8. 10/12/46 Letter: ”…I read so much of hypnotism used in cases of neroues [neuroses]. Please sir, do help me. Perhaps that can help me…”
R9. 12/25/46 Letter: “I have written you before, and you did write and tell me that you would write to Dr. [H. A. Thornbury, D.O.] and let me know what he had to answer you. Now, Mr. Cayce, can you possibly help me in any way? I was sent back to the State Hospital again. So far, I don’t feel any better. Do you think you could…convince them…that they could help me? Do you feel that the reading was right, and would they believe in it, I mean the doctors in this hospital. Of course, if I explained that I sent for a reading, they would say I’m crazy. Mr. Cayce, if you have any way or knowledge of helping me out, please I beg of you, please try to do something for me…”
R10. 1/4/47 HLC’s letter: “I have written to the doctor again, and I will let you hear from us just as soon as I have a reply from him. In the meantime, I have had your name placed on the prayer list of the groups in …” [Also wrote to Mrs. [1770] today, requesting that this case be given personal attention.]
R11. 3/21/50 IMG’s letter: ”…If you will contact Dr. Henry of …, Del., I’m sure he will give you every consideration in carrying out your treatments; he will also refer you to a reputable hypnotist. Please let us hear from you in regard to this matter. We can help others through research, if each case is carefully followed to a successful conclusion…”
R12. 5/9/50 Letter: “I received your letter of 3/21/50. Please read this letter thoroughly and do try to understand. Thank you so much for remembering me in all these years gone by; never thought I would hear from you again. Have such unpleasant things to say. Am wondering if you will be interested. Well, anyway, I am going on, to tell you about myself. Since I had my reading from Mr. Cayce. First I was at home, called in a doctor and explained that I had a reading and would he please carry out the instructions. He looked at me in a queer way. But I begged him to try. Gave me treatments 3 times a week. As the weeks passed, I felt no better. He thought I should not spend my money and wouldn’t come to my home. I sent to you people for a second reading. Mr. Cayce was very ill. Soon after, I heard of his passing away. I have written to you after that, I remember.
“Now for the rest of my years. It was 5 years ago, I seemed to get worse, my husband got tired of me and got a divorce, remarried. I lost my only son, he has to live with other people. You can imagine how mentally ill I am, not to be able to fase [face?] my rights in the world and not to contest and ask for support for myself. My poor son having a mother and yet not having one. God alone can understand. I have been brought to the … State Hospital about November of 1945, and am here since. I have a fear of going outdoors and fear of facing reality. You can’t ever know what it is to live this way. I pray you never will. I know you must think me a queer person. I can’t blame you. Something within me is guiding me on to write you all about myself… I wrote you and had my sister mail it from the outside. She, by the way, does not believe in the reading, and that battery I sent for, every time I used it at home, I had to hide; they just couldn’t see such foolishness as they called it. Anyway, I didn’t get any better, no matter what I did. I know I am mentally ill, my mind just thinks one way, and that is fear constantly; I just can’t explain it to you. Your address of this doctor [Henry] in …, Del., may be just the person who could cure me. You must realize what it means to hear this good news, and yet not be able to go on to get it. Please try to understand. Please don’t get angry with me. This life of mine is just a nightmare from one day to another. I hope I hear from you soon. Please try to understand what I am trying to tell you. Thank you again for your suggestion and help. Believe me when I say I want and need help. Its something I can’t explain that holds me back. If you ever hear of anyone near…please let me know… I can go off the ground any time I want and I think can bear to go and take a chance on a very short distance. I’ve just got to get someone to help me change my train of thoughts. Please forgive me for taking up your time.”
R13. 4/14/52 IMG’s letter [addressed both to [5117] at the … Hospital, and to her home. Letter returned marked “Removed, no address.”]: “It has been 2 years since we wrote you. At that time we suggested that you contact Dr. Henry …, Del… We are very much interested in receiving your report…”
R14. 6/18/52 No record of verbal or written contact on this case since 5/9/50.
R15. 2/13/69 Letter to HLC: “I have heard you on so many radio programs. Enjoyed them very much. I have written to you before and had a reading by your father. Couldn’t carry out his suggestions for lack of funds. Now I am suffering from rheumatic arthritis. Would like to know if Mr. Edgar Cayce spoke of any help for it. Please send information.” [GD’s note: The letter had an address in “Bldg. 85 …, Conn.” Probably a mental institution?]
Background
Background
B1. Born 2/7/12 in Pennsylvania; married; one child.
B2. 9/17/43 Letter: “I have read an article about the miracles you have done, and would you please help me? I am desperate. I have a bad case of mental disease and have been to so many doctors - none seem to help me. Will you kindly try to help me? You seem to have so much power. What I have read in ‘Coronet’, just seems to have brought the hope I am waiting for. I have a fear case, and it is bad. Will you please try to help me if you can, and do answer my letter; I will wait in hope of hearing from you soon. Please explain to me what and how you operate, and what I have to do, and please don’t ask me to come to Virginia. I never leave the house, and my head is splitting. Please help me, please.”
B3. 9/26/43 Letter: “I am the person that called you up on the morning of September 26, and you told me to wait till Dec. for a reading; but I beg you please try to help me. I just can’t wait. I will tell you I was born a coward, and can’t face life. I have been to many doctors, and don’t get any relief. I am a mental case, and I can’t stand myself. If you will please help me. I dreaded to talk to you over the phone. I went through torture just to speak to you or anyone. I just feel I need help, yet you are so busy and can’t do my reading. But I beg you, please. When I read your miracle doings for others, I felt a little hope, and thought I ought to write to you. I know I expect too much from you. Yet I feel I can’t wait, so you see what a selfish person I am. Please, Mr. Cayce, answer my letter as soon as you can. Thank you, thank you so much. I am Mrs. [5117], and if I sound unreasonable, please forgive me and excuse me. I have written you before, about a week ago. Please answer my letter and let me know if you can help me. I am always home.”
B4. 10/10/43 Letter: “I am sending in my application for a reading, and I beg you please try to give me a reading soon. I have such terrible headaches, and from what I read in your booklet, you also suffered from severe headaches, so I expect you know what it is to go on trying to live through headaches constantly. I beg you on my hands and knees, please try to help me… I pray to God to let me have peaceful mind and patience. I get no relief, yet I don’t blame God, for my suffering… You are my last hope… I am praying you to listen to my pleading… I don’t know if my sickness is physical or mental, so I marked mental…”
B5. 11/13/43 Letter: “I know I’m being a pest and everything else that one can be called, but please can’t you give me a reading right away? I just dread the days and nights that I my heart to try to help me. I know that you are busy and there are many before me, I understand. But my head is killing me. If only you would believe me that I am sincere and not that I feel I am a privilege character. But I must have help soon. I take all kinds of dope pills and they do not relieve me for one minute. Please Mr. Cayce, I know I am expecting too much, but believe me, I can’t stand my head. If only I knew of you sooner, I would have tried to get in touch with you before this; but I didn’t know of you until I read about the wonders you have done for people in the ‘Coronet’ magazine. I have written so often to you, and you must be angry with me. But I don’t know where to turn to. I pray and try to be patient, but it doesn’t seem to help me any. If the doctors can’t help me I know I can’t help myself. For my head is just as if I was getting shocks - the pain is so strong and minute after minute. If you could just tell me what to do for myself.”
B6. 11/15/43 Letter: “Received your letter telling me of my membership and reading date. Now, as to my headaches and my whereabouts: I am at home every minute and day; I don’t set foot out of my door. It is about a year now, I don’t go out at all. My head aches from morning until night time, when I go to bed. I have a tightening feeling around my head, as if a tight hand was around my head, and I feel this will kill me any minute. In the morning, when I get up, it is with a very irritated feeling in my head, and as if something was crawling around my head inside. When I go to comb my hair, I can’t touch my head; it feels as if I am pulling my brains out; I can’t even run my fingers over my scalp. Then I get a shock in the back of my head, and it seems as if my head was splitting in two. The sides of my temples, they just seem to burst on me, and I have to quickly put my fingers over them, or they will jump out of my sides of the head. I go days without combing my hair for the pains I have - to comb my hair. And day after day and every minute, it is my head - a very blurred and irritated feeling. Mr. Cayce, I humbly beg you, please help me sooner. I just can’t seem to go on this way. Every minute of the day I am praying you will hear me and help me. It’s a wonder you don’t feel my begging, for I go around just thinking and trying to get in your thoughts, so you could hear and feel my pleas. If you could come in contact with my mind, you would have felt my calling to you… Tell me, could I disturb you by concentrating on you all the time? If so, please let me know. I will remain a friend.”
B7. 12/7/43 Letter: “I have written you and begged you to please help me sooner. You said you could not give me a reading until March 11, 1944. I try to wait, but believe me, I just can’t stand my headaches and the torture I am going through. I do not seem unreasonable, but God in heaven help me Mr. Cayce; the pain and all the dope I am taking to kill it does not help me any. You will try to give me a reading soon. I just don’t want to go on living in this state of mind. Will you please help me, please soon?
B8. 3/14/44 Letter: “I’m so sorry to hear about your illness. I pray to God that you will be better soon. About my appointment, I do wish to have my reading, and do please let me know. I am waiting patiently. Thank you.”
B9. 3/24/44 Letter: “I was to have a reading on March 11, and of course I had a letter telling me Mr. Cayce was ill on that date. Would you kindly tell me when, and how soon I can have a reading? I am such a mess…but somehow I have a feeling Mr. Cayce can help me. Something in my mind keeps telling me that I can find help through Mr. Cayce’s reading. When I receive the Monthly Bulletin, I get more faith in my whole soul, and feel I can get some help. Please write and let me know when my reading will be…”
B10. 4/20/44 Letter: ”…About the certain [type] reading: I can’t figure which would do the most good in my case. I know I am mentally sick. Yet I have such terrible headaches and pains in my head. I feel a Physical Reading would be best. So you see, I am confused, and please Mr. Cayce help me to pick the right one…if it’s the pains that cause my mental condition, I am at a loss. I read the booklet on the different readings and re-read them. I still can’t figure which one is proper. I beg you to help me…”
