This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 18th day of May, 1944, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [5124], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the book, THERE IS A RIVER.

1. GC: You will give the relation of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces, giving the conditions that are as personalities, latent and exhibited, in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth’s plane, giving time, place and the name, and that in that life which developed or retarded the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, and that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions as I ask them:

2. EC: This is a new cycle.

3. Here we have the experience of an entity through the years, because of what others say, constantly submerging that which has ever been the real interest of the entity: Intuition, things psychic, mysteries and such activities. Had the body, through these years not allowed what others said to influence the body to keep this intuition out of the life, much greater would have been the development of the body.

4. In the present those astrological aspects mean very little. But begin to study all phases of psychic phenomena, though don’t begin with automatic writing. For this would soon lead to such channels as to be more detrimental than beneficial. But begin to read the scripture, searching for those portions of same that give the warning, as well as the instruction as to how one would seek to be an individual who may give a great deal to mankind. This undertaken, the entity may set itself to be of a great help to others through any phase of psychic forces it would choose to demonstrate.

5. Know that it is not too far afield, but do gain the understanding from beginning with this: Take Exodus 19:5. To be sure, it is interpreted by many here that the Creative Forces or God are speaking to a peculiar people. You were one of them. Why not, then, today? Although through the years your name has been changed, the soul is the same. Hence this is, as it were, spoken to thee.

6. Then take the 30th of Deuteronomy, where there is the admonition as to the source, that it’s not from somewhere else, but it is within thine own self. For that influence of the Creative Force is so near, yea closer even than thy own hand!

7. Then analyze that, reading in connection with same all of the story of Ruth as to her sincerity. And if it needs to be, those companionships may be drawn from thine own activities, and the fear of what may be in the future will fade as the mists before the morning sun.

8. For in the study of these, not merely read to know them, but get the meaning of universal love, not attempting to make it personal but universal. For God is love and, as ye go about to manifest same in thy conversation, ye may find the true meaning of love.

9. Study also astrological subjects, not as termed by some, but rather in the light of that which may be gained through a study of His word. For, as it was given from the beginning, those planets, the stars, are given for signs, for seasons, for years, that man may indeed (in his contemplation of the universe) find his closer relationships.

10. For man is made a co-creator with the Godhead. Not that man is good or bad according to the position of the stars, but the position of the stars brings what an individual entity has done about God’s plan into the earth activities during those individual periods when man has the opportunity to enter or come into material manifestations.

11. In the study, forsake not, of course, the true way and light. As is given from the beginning: God said, “Let there be light” and there was light, and that light became, and is the light of the world. For it is true that light, that knowledge, the understanding of that Jesus who became the Christ, is indeed thy elder brother and yet Creator, Maker of the universe; and thus are ye a part of same and a directing influence.

12. Then, as ye practice His principles ye become aware of same. And these are first: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, thy mind, thy soul, and thy neighbor as thyself.”

13. Study then, also the 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th of John as it speaks to thee, and as to how ye may apply thyself in the intuition, the walks with divine influences.

14. And it is with what spirit ye entertain that ye measure that kind of helpfulness to thy Maker. Do what thou doest intuitionally, or as the spirit moves thee.

15. As to the appearances in the earth, these have been far apart and yet they indicate the pattern.

16. Before this ye found thyself among those who were the companions with Joan of Arc, as called in the present. And the helpfulness the entity gave to that individual is the same that is required for the entity in the present to interpret self-direction.

17. Then the entity was known as Jeanne Feucheuerr. In the experience the entity was unknown to many and yet the power behind the individual entity gained such notoriety as to be sainted by those in whose ministration the individual acted, yet found not favor with men.

18. The individual entity here has found something of the same and yet, as indicated, may bring about the activities that were in the experience of that day.

19. Before that we find the entity was among those of the children who were blessed by the Master in those periods when they came to be in His presence. In the name then Ruth.

20. Before that we find the entity in the Holy Land when there were those admonitions being given just before the entering by the lawgiver, Moses. The entity was then among the children of Elijah the Priest, in the name then Miriam, and the entity became one to whom those in active service in the temple harkened.

21. Then know the law of the Lord, for it is perfect, and it’s not hard to interpret if ye do apply it literally, spiritually, mentally. If ye try to explain it, it is hard; live it, it is easy.

22. Before that we find the entity was in the Egyptian land when there were those peoples who were interpreting the law as had been proclaimed by the Priest, and those tenets which were part of the mission in the Temple Beautiful.

23. The entity then aided in setting the order of the home rule, as homes were established after the Priest’s passing. Thus home security, physically, mentally, always seems to the entity something that must be, if there would be peace of mind.

26. If ye will apply, if ye will trust, if ye will live those truths known, they are unlimited.

28. (Q) Would it be advisable to sell my home; if so, where should I locate? (A) When the entity has become proficient in being able to give others that interpretation for activity in their lives, then locate wherever the entity chooses. In the south in the winter, and in the north in the summer, but go along the east coast, not to the west coast. From Maine, then to Florida, may the entity find regular periods of residence.

29. (Q) Would it be well to seek marriage in this life? (A) As has been indicated, this may come of itself, but control those influences. It will come through one ye meet in thy activity. If ye choose not the activity, it will not come.

R1. 6/19/44 Letter: ”…In regard to my reading, you are reading my mind! I sit down with the bible and my reading and study the passages… I am doing a fine work helping people to earn their living, but my personal life is not much. What I really want the answer to is so deeply and evasively put in my reading that I can only see that if I live the life and become proficient in being able to give others that interpretative activity in their lives, then and only then, can I locate where I choose, and find perhaps companionship in marriage, and that if I do not live the ‘activity’ an early death is foreseen, but if I live the ‘activity’, I will live here on this plane for some time. What is meant by activity? Where and how am I to begin? I live each day doing my duty. I am not in contact with people who study metaphysical subjects. …Is clannish and snobbish, and one is branded as ‘queer’ if they delve into these things; for instance, mothers would not send their daughters to me if they knew that, at heart, I am a spiritualist! I am not associated with the deeply intellectual; there are no New Thought Churches or lectures to attend. I can’t stand Christian Science, tho it has its good points. Thank you for letting me express myself, for I am worried, but I still can keep ‘plodding’ along, tho life goes by swiftly.”

R2. 3/14/50 Letter: “I had such confidence in the ability and sincerity of Edgar Cayce that I believe the report to be true, if I accept the reincarnation theory. I do not like the thought even of reincarnation, but every metaphysical subject I have read, and all religions accept it, except the Christian Scientist and some western spiritualists. I asked for my past live[s] in my reading, and Mr. Cayce gave me my five. I think Mr. Cayce was a very gifted and beautiful soul

• always giving himself to the last degree of his strength. I think he was absolutely right about everything he told me: my desire for psychic unfoldment and my fear of public opinion, etc. He wrote to me in his own handwriting many times, and I asked him not to, for I felt he did not have the time… I am a business teacher in my home, and I consider that my influence in spiritual ways with my students and the thorough job I do has sent hundreds into the world for their life work. I am happy in my work and love it, but it is not the dominant note by any means. I was gifted as a choir singer and musician and belonged on the stage as a dancer and I loved my solo work in many choirs. At 19, my life was twisted by a very unfortunate marriage and divorce. Then until 13 1/2 years ago, my life was completely dominated by a mother complex, and I gave up marriage and the love of husband and children which I needed, because I could not divide my affection. She did not want me to, but she controlled me, so I could not leave her. Now I am alone in the world and it is too late for the joys I should have had. I am living a useful, worthwhile life and a sad one, completely frustrated, so it must be karma, and you can see the ‘Ruth’ influence. Spend money needlessly - my work and renting my rooms when I can, keep me completely tied. I read several magazines on astrology, etc., but I cannot study it, as shorthand is hard to teach, and I am tired when I have leisure time. I am not robust, and need much rest. I shall always regret not having met Mr. Cayce…”

B2. 7/21/43 Letter: “I have just finished your book ‘There Is A River’. I began it yesterday and sat up half the night and finished this afternoon. I begrudged the time I had to spend sleeping, away from the book. I am a student of metaphysics in all its branches, and I am trying to live the spiritual life, but have many set backs. I am studying and practicing ‘Unity’ and was led thru prayers to this book, which I tried for 5 weeks to get from a rental library; some day I hope to buy it. I feel sure you will give me a reading, for the light has brought your work to me. I need and want 2 types of reading: the spiritual diagnosis of my soul and past incarnations, so that I may know what is wrong. I am alone in the world, 55 and growing old alone, when I desperately need family life, love and companionship. I give lessons in shorthand and typewriting in my home, and the war has taken my girls so fast that I want to know how I am to make a living… I need a personal clairvoyant reading as to what to do about selling my home, which I love and was left to me by my mother, whom I adored and lost 7 years ago. I carry a smiling face to the world and am soloist in a choir, singing inspirationally always, but in my heart I am a little child, alone. Do you give readings as to the future, length of life, chances or moves to another town, marriage, etc.? B3. 8/16/43 Letter: ”…I am having no success; in fact my school is closed; all students are placed in splendid positions, and I, too young and too capable to sit down in a corner and take in roomers, and too old to get a position out in the world. The war has done this, it is no fault of mine…”

B4. 5/2/44 Letter: ”…I feel that my reading is not necessary, so I am leaving it up to you, and please do not hesitate to do what is for your best interest and good. I hope you are well and strong again. My best interest… My school has built up beautifully, but I am in the same position as before, financially…as I have been doctoring since last October for 2 quite serious ailments…”

B5. 5/10/44 Letter: ”…I do not need the physical. Dr. Renner is curing me of Brights disease and has cured me of a toxic thyroid. He has one or 2 of your clients and has bought ‘There Is A River’ and I feel I am being helped. A lot of it is diet, and up to me but I do need help mentally, for the subconscious soul sickness I fight is the cause of all the physical loneliness, emotional starvation, causing me to overeat to kill time, etc… Here is my first question: [besides those at end of 5124-1] (1) Should I try, at my age, to leave here and uproot myself? I have a big reputation as a teacher here, but away from here alone, would I make out without a background or any rating? (2) Do you see me living any length of time? (3) Do you see any bad accidents for me? (4) Will I ever be able to travel and do the things I long to do, and not count the cost? I have had an unusually peculiar life, and Saturn has shut the lid down tight on my personal life and hopes. Everyone belonging to me has died, even friends die or move clear across the continent. I am an only child, my father was a doctor. Have talents above the ordinary; was preparing for the opera, but married and soon divorced. Then my mother being left a widow twice, needed me; but continued to sing in church choirs, still do off and on, always something to interrupt that, colds, nerves. etc. So I am a business school teacher, have taught 20 years; have won quite a reputation as a teacher, but my heart is in my home, in keeping it up, etc. What I want the answer to, is why am I gradually being left alone, no chance of marriage, am too hard to please. Have had several intense love affairs, but none I would trust again and get along for companionship. I have been denied a personal love life and children, and now I fear old age… One other thing: I am not morbid; I am jolly by nature, and try to live the truth…”
