1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body, answering the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [5128].

3. In giving the interpretation of the disturbance here: While this is not understood except by few, we find that with a great deal of persistence and consistence there may be brought nearer to normal reactions in the body.

4. There has been a complication of disturbances, which has closed the coordination of the auditory forces with the reflexes of the brain and with the body itself.

5. From a pressure which has existed, we find that with the operative measures lesions were formed. These have gradually changed.

6. We find that it would be better if the body were kept close to the mother, for at least another three to four years. For we will find that these are the better administrations; and if there is not the teaching in the present, it would be hard to teach the body after it has reached its eighth, ninth or tenth year, yet much more may be gained through these applications:

7. First, we would give that there be regular periods when there would be osteopathic manipulations given by an eye, ear, nose and throat specialist (of the osteopathic school). These, as we find, are to break up those lesions or adhesions in the lacteal duct area and in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cervicals and in the lower dorsal and through the coccyx area. These should not be too severe, but gradually work towards (within the next twelve months), the raising of the Eustachian tube. These should also be used regularly:

8. The low Wet Cell Appliance carrying Chloride of Gold vibratorially into the body. The connections would be prepared a little bit differently for this body, though the regular charge should be used. The larger plate through which the Gold Solution passes vibratorially (in the proportions of one grain Chloride of Gold Sodium, to each ounce of distilled water, and use at least three ounces) would be attached each day for twenty minutes to the umbilical and lacteal duct, which on this body will be the width of the mother’s three fingers to the right from the navel center, and one finger up from that point. The small copper plate (now, this is the variation) would be attached one day to the left portion of that area back of the ear, or the mastoid area; the next day on the right. The next day attach again to the left, and so on; each day changing the application of this plate.

9. This Wet Cell treatment should not begin until there has been at least the second series of the osteopathic adjustments made.

10. In giving the treatments with the Wet Cell Appliance, use this period each day, as the period when there will be suggestions made to the body: that it, the body, will - in the influences brought to bear - interpret, understand and make application of these suggestions. Whether these are consciously heard by the body or not, make them audible. Eventually we will find that the body will respond.

11. The Appliance is to be recharged every thirty days.

12. Do take the Gold Solution connections out of the bottle when not attached to the body. Do keep the anodes clean. Do make positive connections; this may preferably be done with tape, adhesive tape, to hold the plate firmly in place. Keep the attachment plates very clean.

13. Each day following the Appliance treatment, do give the body a massage with Cocoa Butter. This should be done by the mother. This should be begun at the area over the mastoid, around the chin, forehead, temple; then throat, then along the spine; very gently, yet sufficient for the body to absorb the properties. Do this very thoroughly. Take the time, and use this as the period for conversation. Keeping up this conversation, it will bring corrective measures to the body. Go all the way, of course, to the end of the spine.

14. In the diet, add often the raw vegetables, as: watercress, celery, lettuce, carrots; these preferably grated, but don’t lose the juices in the preparation. Oft prepare them with gelatin.

15. These, if they will be kept, will bring nearer to normal conditions. There will be periods when it will be necessary for changes to be wrought. These we would make (the suggestions for changes in treatment) at least every six to eight months apart.

16. The osteopathic treatments we should have for six or eight, then a rest period from them for two or three weeks, then again having another period, and so on.

17. After the second series, begin with the Wet Cell Appliance - which is to make the connections of the nerves so that the hearing, the speech, all the reflexes (see, the body doesn’t taste properly either, at present) will be brought to nearer normalcy.

19. (Q) What was the original cause of the pressure which brought about this condition? (A) The pressures produced by an injury to the coccyx end of spine.

20. (Q) Can you suggest an osteopathic specialist to carry out these treatments? (A) Dr. Smith, Baltimore.

21. (Q) Any other advice? (A) Do these and we will bring better conditions.

Be patient, be very cheerful. Do teach the body to pray often, as the mother does pray with the body.

R1. 6/1/44 Father’s letter to A. M. Godfrey: “In accordance with Mr. Cayce’s instructions, I am enclosing directions for preparing Wet Cell Appliance, as given in a reading for my little daughter. It will be needed about 1/1/44, to fit into the schedule given in the reading…”

R2. 11/28/44 Father’s letter: “You gave a reading for our daughter on May 22, 1944, in which it was said that suggestions for changes in treatment would be made every 6 or 8 months. We are therefore applying for a check reading which we hope can be given soon. A check for $20. is also enclosed. We had intended to tell you of our work with our daughter long before now, but since we haven’t done so, will try to tell you about it now. The day after our return to Baltimore, we brought our daughter home from the R. E. I. School [Reinhardt School]. She was very thin and half starved, but seemed happy to get home. We began the osteopathic treatments the following week. These were given twice a week for 4 weeks, followed by a rest period of 2 weeks. The treatments and rest periods were continued in this fashion until about 2 months ago, when Dr. Smith suggested that we continue without a rest period, which was done until 2 weeks ago. We have now started the treatments again. We were not certain as to the correct interpretation of the reading in this regard, and therefore thought we should report what was done. Treatments with the Wet Cell Appliance were started after the 2nd series of osteopathic treatments, and have been continued daily with only occasional interruptions of a day or two. We find these treatments quite difficult to administer because our daughter is very uncooperative. It is totally impractical to tie or tape the plates to her and we therefore hold them by hand. Much of the time she struggles to free herself, sometimes seriously and sometimes playfully. She tires after a few minutes, so most of these treatments have been limited to about 10 minutes or less, instead of 20 as suggested in the reading. She is also very uncooperative in the case of the massage with Cocoa Butter. In the beginning the Cocoa Butter caused her to break out in a rash. We alternated with vaseline for a while and since then the Cocoa Butter has not caused the rash. Thus far, she has appeared to pay no attention at all to any ‘conversation’ with her during this treatment.

As to her general attitude and behavior, it is difficult to say just how much improvement she has made since we started the treatments. She frequently appears to understand commands such as ‘No!’ and ‘Let’s go to bed’ for example. She also appeared to understand to about the same degree part of the time before we began the treatments. She has made no recognizable attempt to speak or to say single words. In one regard she has seemed to improve, and that is in her everyday outlook. Formerly, she was cross and downright ungrateful most of the time. Except for the last week or so, she has been fairly happy and much easier to live with. For about the past week she seems to have slipped back into some of her old ways, and has been making a very distracting ‘aaaa’ sound out of the corner of her mouth. It sounds like something was bothering her; earache, headache or something which we have been at a loss to determine. She has also broken into tears and sobbing and has been difficult to calm. We are therefore all the more eager for a check reading, because something new in the way of trouble may have come along. In any case, her need is very great. We try to do all we can to help her. We have been wondering if anything could be gained by several check readings to make sure that the osteopathic treatments are being properly administered, for example. Dr. Smith has had some difficulty of late because she does not want to relax. We would like very much to have your opinion as to the merits of several check readings and also any suggestions regarding her tension during treatments. We would like to ask the following questions in the check reading: (1) What should be done to make her sleep better at night? (2) What can be done to discourage her gnawing on metal and other objects? (3) Should she be sent to day school now; that is, a school for retarded children? (4) What can be done to get her cooperation during Wet Cell and osteopathic treatments? These are questions we have been concerned with for a long time. If they suggest others to you, please add or reword them as you choose. You will note that we have not enclosed an application form. As we understand it, a form is not necessary. Please let us know if this is not correct. Wishing you and yours health and happiness for the coming Christmas season, we are…”

R3. 12/9/44 IMG’s letter to [5128]‘s parents: ”…Mr. Cayce’s continued illness makes it impossible for us to offer you any hope of an appointment for a check reading for months to come… For this reason we would suggest that you continue to use the information you already have in its entirety, outlining the entire routine and allowing about one week’s rest period between each series. We would like to caution you about the necessity for following through with the use of the Wet Cell Appliance, just as the instructions are given. Be very sure that you keep the plates thoroughly clean, and renew the solutions, etc…”

R4. 2/14/50 Father’s letter: ”…I am writing also for a more selfish reason, which will be clear as explained below. According to your records, we had a reading for our daughter. I might add here that we followed the reading in all sincerity, as far as we knew how to do so. The reading promised ‘near normalcy’. As you probably know, we were unable to follow up this initial reading with any check readings. We have in effect been on our own since that time. There has been a succession of trials of this doctor and that doctor. The net result of our efforts has been not too successful. Our daughter was quite recently ‘examined’ by observation only by one of the nation’s leading authority on spastic and handicapped children. His diagnosis was ‘perfect physical health, but irreparable injury to the frontal or intelligence lobes of the brain.’ Our daughter does not talk, though her hearing is good. Her mental age by some standards, at least, is between 4 and 5 years. We have not been able to get her into a satisfactory school, because but few such schools exist, and any good ones are prohibitively expensive. I have 2 questions which have come to me again and again for some years: First, did any of the readings ever indicate ‘irreparable brain injury’, and thus close the door to any hope of life beyond the shadows of non-comprehension? Second, did any of the readings indicate that a situation such as our daughter’s is punishment for misdeeds in a former incarnation, and therefore to be accepted without hope of substantial improvement? I know your work is one of monumental proportions, and therefore hesitate to add in any way to that burden. But my daughter has not really lived or been a daughter to me, and I cannot conscientiously overlook any possible avenue of hope. Help in the eventual case must come from the mercy of our Maker. But He commands that one must also try. If you know the answers to my questions, or if you have any suggestions which would help me, I would be most grateful to you if you could find the time to write to me.”

R5. 3/22/50 HLC’s letter to [5128]‘s father: ”…First, with reference to your questions: There have been readings which indicated irreparable brain injury. Our only way of estimating the accuracy of the reading for your daughter is to compare it with other similar case histories. If this had been a brain injury, personally, I believe the reading would have said so. As was mentioned, the cause of her condition arose from spinal injury and operative measures which resulted in the forming of lesions. Were there any other operations performed on her, other than the adenoid operation you described in your report of May 22, 1944? Just how long did you follow the treatment with the Appliance? There have been some remarkable results with the use of these appliances. As you probably know, it is the general scientific belief that nerve tissue cannot be restored. There seems to be some indication in our records on these Wet Cell Appliances, as used in your daughter’s case, which may indicate a new type of treatment in restoring nerve energy through tissue which has been destroyed. You will not find any agreement with this idea in ordinary medical science at the present time. May I suggest that you write to the mothers of [[5014] and [2963]], asking them to describe for you just what results they have obtained in following treatments with appliances similar to the one given you. This might encourage you to go back to regular treatments as outlined in the readings. That would take a great deal of time, but they have in other instances produced good results.

In answer to your second question, there are a great number of readings which indicated karmic responsibilities. Undoubtedly, some such urges are involved in your daughter’s condition, but they relate as much to you and your wife as to her. Spiritual and mental development is possible for all of you through the treatments outlined. I hope that I have an opportunity to talk with you about this case, as I would like to tell you in more detail some of our experiences with similar conditions…”

I would like very much to enlist your aid in this manner for my brother. His case has been diagnosed as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Could you please arrange to send me at your earliest convenience, some typical readings for treatment of this disease…”

R9. 4/14/52 GD’s reply to [5128]‘s father: “According to my understanding, I believe the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is a combination of progressive muscular atrophy and polio. I am therefore sending you [5019]‘s case together with an abstract on Multiple Sclerosis for comparative study.”

B2. 5/13/44 Father’s letter: “My wife and I have very recently been reading ‘There Is A River’… It has brought to us renewed faith that more can be done for our little daughter [5128] now 5 years of age, who has apparently been deaf since about 6 months old. We are therefore writing to you to ask you to please give a reading for her. Until she was about 6 months old, she was a dear and sweet baby, happy and bright as could be. Then a slow change came over her. She lost interest in her toys, in people and in the things around her. And she suffered attacks which doctors described as epileptoid. We took her to one doctor after another, with no real benefit, until we heard of one who expressed the belief that she was deaf. At his suggestion, her adenoids were removed. By this time, she was 2 years old. Her epileptoid attacks ceased within a week or so, and there was a general improvement in her personality. But the improvement didn’t continue, and so there were again more doctors, with not too much success. During the past year, she has had a number of radiation treatments for an adenoid condition, with perhaps some improvement in her hearing. At the present time, she is at a boarding school for little deaf children… She has been there three weeks. We have believed from the beginning that something more could be done for her, than what our doctors have prescribed. With faith and prayers for her future, we beg you to help us.”

B3. 5/22/44 Mother’s remarks and questions orally submitted to GD, previous to reading, in addition to those at end of 5128-1: “Up until 6 months old, she was the sweetest, dearest little girl you ever saw, peppy, full of life, interested in things and people, doing a number of things rather advanced for her age. About that time, we noticed a little of what the doctors called epileptoid movements, which as time went along increased in severity. We took her to the hospital for observation. She cried bitterly - we left her there - it was over Thanksgiving Day. We picked her up the next day - the doctor said ‘nothing wrong with her, perfectly normal child, just take her home and forget it.’ We brought her home, and she had a terrible case of diarrhea and a cold afterward; never was even at all like herself after that. Then she continued to have the attacks of epileptoid appearance, falling just like she was shot. We took her to one doctor or another, continually. One said she was deaf and that her adenoids should be removed. A week after the operation, the attacks stopped. That summer she started saying ‘mama’, the first word she had ever said. We thought everything was going to be alright, but by fall she quit saying ‘mama’, and after that time, it was a step forward and a step backward. She now hears some, we know that; she doesn’t talk; doesn’t feed or dress herself; she hasn’t advanced mentally as she should; she avoids one’s eyes, though not as much as she used to, but doesn’t seek one’s eyes as a child usually does. It is a constant source of worry to have her away from us, as we know that she isn’t fed properly, but we don’t know what to do; we want her to have the best care possible. (1) Should these treatments be followed at home, or just where could they be best carried out? (2) In case nothing can be done, just what procedure is best on the part of the parents: should they keep the child at home, or is it best to place her in a school; if so, what school would be best?”
