This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 20th day of May, 1944, in accordance with request made by self - Miss [5130], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the book, THERE IS A RIVER.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Jeanette Fitch, Stenos.]
Time of Reading Set bet. 3:30 to 4:30 P. M. Eastern War Time. …, Calif.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them.
-
EC: Yes. As we find, there is quite a combination or complication of disturbances, but these primarily arise from incoordination between the cerebrospinal and sympathetic nervous systems. Parts of these arise from reflections from organic disturbances, as we see indicated through the alimentary canal, and especially those disturbances between the liver and the heart, for the disassociations between the sympathetic and cerebrospinal in the emunctory patches in various areas along the spinal system are almost such at times, as it were, to take the governing influences off of the activity of the heart, and thus the irregularity as to pulsation.
-
The conditions are indicated in the throat, as from incoordination when the body attempts to speak; for there is lack of control, or those that are voluntary, become involuntary in the reflexes between the cerebrospinal and sympathetic systems, as related to the activities of the organs in the upper portions of the body.
-
As we find, in making administrations that would be beneficial, first we would begin with a general relaxing treatment or treatments by one of the osteopathic schools.
-
But we would also administer those vital energies, as well as make better building up of resistance in the body; also using the short-wave electrical treatments.
-
These will help if they are done consistently and persistently; during the first period, about twice each week, have about 12 osteopathic relaxing treatments, and during that period at least once a week have the short-wave electrical treatments, not heavier or higher than 4 amps.
-
These, as we find, will set about better coordination between the nervous systems, provided the activities in the mechanical therapy or the osteopathic therapy will be to relax at the 3rd cervical, through the brachial center, 9th dorsal and throughout the lumbar area, and these may bring better conditions for the body.
-
The vital energies to be taken should be (even though the body is able at times to be in the open) the B Complex tablets, as prepared in the One-A-Day Brand Vitamin B Complex tablets.
-
These should be taken one a day. If those activities are helped, we will find better conditions if there is the response in the body-activities.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Any advice regarding the diet? (A) We would keep very close to a regular balanced diet, but do supplement same, at the breakfast meal, with one tablet of One-A-Day Vitamin B Complex Tablets, made by Miles Laboratories.
-
(Q) What causes stiffness and weakness in knees? (A) As has been indicated, the lack of the proper eliminations through the alimentary canal.
-
(Q) How should I treat my stomach and bowels for pains? (A) The general applications which have been made, all of these will aid in producing conditions wherein the body will make for better response.
-
(Q) Are headaches caused from eyes? (A) Headaches are caused from eye strain. Do wear glasses and wear those that would show long distances, as well as those of reading glasses, or bifocals.
-
We are through with this reading.
Two copies to Self (one for the doctor who is to give the osteopathic and electrical treatment - Please let us have the name of the one you choose.) Copy to Ass’n file ” for indexing

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 6/20/44 Letter: “It is a month since you gave the Reading for me, May 20. This is the first opportunity to acknowledge it. It got to me on May 26. About a week later, I went to the Dr. Miller you recommended, and since have had a few treatments from her. The reading was remarkable to me, although I could not understand the technical language, but Dr. Miller did. I can feel that she is doing me good already. That is what I need: not medicine. I was almost all in: could not have stood up another week. As it was, I lost my job. I will take this week to rest, so as to let the treatments do me all the good possible. Feel sure I can get another good job as soon as I am able to work properly. I find Dr. Miller to be very intelligent and efficient. Also very kind and sympathetic. I am very grateful to you, Mr. Cayce, for this wonderful spiritual diagnosis. What doctor would ever have got at all these complications? I have been to many, and they never have got at the trouble…”

R3. 5/27/52 Questionnaire-letter to Dr. Miller. No reply.

Background
Background
B1. Born 4/24/1896 in California; single.
B2. 12/19/43 Letter: ”…We find this book on Mr. Cayce’s life a very remarkable and interesting study. We have read the booklets on ‘Egyptian History’, ‘Arabian History’, ‘Meditation’, and ‘The Last Supper’. We find these all fascinating and worthy of careful study. I am very anxious for a Physical Reading… I am the wage earner in this little family of two, and without my health I would be terribly handicapped. For the last few months I have had an aggravated heart condition, causing great nervousness and often twitching of the muscles of the face, neck and left arm. The slightest shock upsets me emotionally, resulting in physical reactions. I have always had very sensitive feelings. I know this is foolish, but I cannot help it. My physician is also at present treating me for a very severe sinus trouble in the bones around the eyes. I have headaches every day, presumably from this cause. I have lost weight in this period and am much too thin. I am just recovering from the flu, seem to have very little resistance. I am anxious for just the right kind of help to get my health and strength, so I can work in a spirit of freedom and happiness…”
B3. 1/11/44 Letter: ”…My sinus trouble at the present seems to be better, for which I’m thankful. But the heart condition bothers me, as it causes muscular reflexes which are detrimental to my work…”
B4. 1/24/44 Letter: ”…I was fitted to glasses which I received a few days ago; they are helping my headaches. My 2 months’ rest has helped me too, but I am looking now for work… I think it better to send my questions later, as my condition might change between now and then…”
B5. 2/29/44 Letter: ”…I am very well pleased with work I am now doing as a nurse in a private sanatorium, but it is very important that I keep my health, and I am greatly hoping that your reading on 5/20 will help me…”
B6. 4/7/44 Letter: ”…My condition is serious, and I have Unity treat me also, but am not as yet getting the necessary results. My heart is acting up, and it is all I can do to go to work lately, but there is almost no income unless I do, so you can be sure I am anxiously waiting to get the help you can give me… I simply have to dope myself up every day to go ahead. And almost every day something new in reflex action assails me. I can’t understand why metaphysical treatments don’t do more, but am sustaining my faith just the same. Please help me if you can…”
B7. 4/16/44 Letter: ”…I can’t help writing you of my condition at present. I had a very bad spell on the job, if you know what I mean. It came on very suddenly. The first thing I noticed as I sat charting in the early a.m… I looked down the hall; I could scarcely see: a kind of dizziness had come over me. However, I did not lose consciousness and could finish my charting. Then, when I went to get up from the chair, I walked in a wobbly manner like a person drunk… One of the nurses noticed this, and had to help me downstairs. My knees seemed stiff and weak. Of course, they all talked this over, and I may be on my way out: a serious prospect for me.
“I just can’t help these heart symptoms showing. My speech, as I wrote you, is jerky and spasmodic and that in itself is bad enough. Of course, they understand these symptoms at the Sanatorium. Mr. Cayce, is there any possibility that you could give me an immediate reading which might save my job for me? I have been to the doctor, but his ability to help me seems very limited. He can’t see inside as your ‘voice’ can. My aunt is typing this for me, as I can’t hold the pen steady. In a sense, this is a matter of life and death, as I must earn money to live. My present job is just suited to my strength: a lovely position, all things being equal. But when my heart acts up, it can spoil everything. I am sending questions in the hope you can help me now. My date for a reading is May 20, but a lot could happen to me before then… (1) What causes spasmodic speech with contractions of face and throat muscles? What shall I do for this? (2) What causes stiffness and weakness in knees? What remedy? (3) What is wrong with my heart, and what can I do about it? (4) I did have very bad headaches for some years. At present I do not have them. Are they likely to recur, or will they be cured by right help to the heart? Are they caused by my eyes? I have glasses for reading and others for distance, but can’s wear those, as they bother me getting on and off cars. Should I wear bi-focals? (5) I had a very strange sort of fainting spell at home yesterday. Kept on breathing, but lost consciousness for a short time. Had to lie on floor for about 15 minutes. Finally came to, and was able to help myself to couch with aunt’s help. Slept well for several hours. It was when at work last night, that the knee trouble developed at sanatorium. These are new troubles. Please say what to do about all these things. Thanks…”
B8. 5/13/44 Letter: ”…(1) What causes spasmodic speech, with contractions of face and throat muscles; also uncontrollable jerking of arms. Remedy? (2) What is wrong with my heart, and what can be done about it? My doctor says I have a chronic heart ailment, but his remedies do not help much. Have had great pain in heart days gone by, not much pain lately… (3) Should I wear bi-focal glasses? (4) Do my eyes cause me to have headaches? They are not so frequent as they were, but would like to know what to do if they come. They have been terrible at times. (5) What should I eat to gain strength and flesh? I am too thin, and not nearly strong as I should be. Please use these questions, not the others I sent. I have added to them… I do not get discouraged just because of my physical troubles. Somehow God continually answers prayers… Your information about gelatin I have made use of; I cannot tell much about it’s effect as yet…”
