1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the condition you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing condition, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them.

2. EC: Yes. Yes, we find a great deal of disturbance here. The activities through the alimentary canal, the disturbance that has long existed in the gall duct area, which has been the source of cause of the lack of proper digestion through the alimentary canal, are only a portion of the great distress. For the pressures through the organs of the pelvis, upon the nerves of the central nervous system, give great distress to all the organs of the sensory system, especially the ears, at times the eyes, at times causing the inability of taste, at times having the effect upon the vocal box.

3. All of these suffer, as do the organs of the central nervous system.

4. As we find, the applications that are made in the present are very good, these are in the right direction. But we would have those vibrations as will analyze the disturbance in the body, through such a one with the iconoclast machine, as Dr. Mary Miller. These may be set so that, even from ten to twelve treatments, the absent treatments radionically given may be administered to the body.

5. These as we find offer the greater possibility and will be helpful. As to the sustaining of help, it will depend upon the consistency of the body in following the directions.

6. When the body has taken these, the iconoclast treatments, for a period of some three weeks, we would add to same the vibrations as may be obtained through the Wet Cell Appliance carrying Chloride of Gold to the body itself. To be sure, this might be given through the machine, but not as effectively for direct aid as it would be through the Wet Cell Appliance made in regular order. The applications of the Chloride of Gold would be with the smaller plate to the 9th dorsal; the larger plate (the wire of which passes through the Gold Solution) attach to the umbilical and lacteal duct plexus, which, on this body would be two fingers from the navel center to the right and four fingers up. Attach for thirty minutes each day. Use at least 3 oz. (of 1 grain to 1 oz. as the strength) of the Gold Chloride, Sodium Gold Chloride for the body.

7. Do that.

8. This we would take for thirty days, and then we would return for more treatments radionically. These should bring help for this body.

9. Ready for questions.

10. (Q) Should I discontinue the treatments and vitamins now being taken? (A) As has been indicated. Don’t discontinue the vitamins. But the machine, as has been indicated, is not set properly. Do have the change as may be obtained through the administrations of Dr. Miller, Los Angeles, Calif.

R2. 9/4/44 Letter: “I am so happy to report a great improvement in my physical and mental condition. I thank you for everything; you have given me a new lease on life. May your life be a long and peaceful one. Reading ‘There Is A River’ gave me courage and faith to see things thru. I developed a severe case of neuritis in my arms the first month’s treatment. The pain was almost unbearable, especially at night. The improvement in arms the last month has been wonderful. Thank God. The severe headaches of the past have grown much less severe. I still have the roaring in head. Pains in head, ears and throat, but much less painful. Dr. Miller is tops. My left ankle is very painful - a burning, tickling pain that affects part of calf. I’ve had it for a year now. I hardly know what to do with my foot. Lately it has begun to swell. I do hope you can help me clear it up. I’ve lost track of the many things that have cleared up since your first reading. Here are my questions. I shall list them, preferred ones first in case I over-stepped the right in asking too many. The cause and cure for the following: (1) What is the matter with my left foot and ankle? (2) How long should I take Wet Cell treatments? (3) How can I regulate and normalize bowel? (4) How can I improve my vision - my eyes have grown noticeably dim the past year. (5) Is my diet all right?…”

Controversy Over Weird Healing Gadget

Mrs. Allen Had Faith In Device

Federal Court Finds No Remote Control Cure In Medicine

Mrs. Eleanor B. Allen, president of the Los Angeles Board of Education, may believe in magic, but the Federal Court doesn’t. Neither does the American Medical Association, nor the Los Angeles City Health Department.

Accordingly, Dr. Ruth B. Drown, Hollywood chiropractor who invented the gadget Mrs. Allen claims cured her of pneumonia by remote control, will be sentenced Monday in Federal Court.

And the City Health Department has prepared a broadside implying that Mrs. Allen is a very credulous woman to head the city’s educational system.

CURED PNEUMONIA

It all began when Mrs. Allen on a visit to Atlantic City thought she was getting pneumonia. But radiation from Drown’s electronic device, set up in Los Angeles, cured her right up, she declared.

Mrs. Allen said last week that the American Medical Association was “closed minded” because it ruled that no such thing could happen.

Now another medical authority stamps on the mysterious little black box with which Dr. Drown practiced “radiotherapy.”

Dr. L. S. Goerke, director of the Bureau of Medical Services for the City Health Department, will publish a broadside in next week’s Health Department Bulletin deploring such “absurd claims” for modern medicinal machines.

HITS CONFUSION

“Confusion caused in the public mind by endorsement of such gadgets by the president of the Board of Education should be clarified and corrected by factual information,” Dr. Goerke declared. “In 1951, in the world’s most literate country, we have magic for the cure of disease.”

The publicity Dr. Drown got with her little black box rebounded to her discomfiture. A federal jury held that the little black box and the wires it contained neither diagnose nor cure all human ills - or any of them.

The jury got her for “mislabeling,” under the Food and Drug Act.

Dr. Drown today denied that she claims her machine, like the fabled product of Lydia E. Pinkham, will “cure all human ills.”

“We don’t claim it will cure anything,” she said. “The patient heals himself. We only help nature to do her work faster.”

In 1946 Dr. Drown received a Certificate of Merit from the New York Museum of Science and Industry for her “miracle machine.”

CLAIMS REMOTE CONTROL

“The museum was part of the Rockefeller Foundation at that time,” she explained. “I understand that since all this has happened that it is no longer in the foundation.”

Dr. Drown said she does claim the electronic device diagnoses by remote control.

“We take the only soft tissue pictures of the human body through the air” she said, “and that proves our claims. We have made these pictures from here to England and from England here, before groups of doctors.”

She intimated that organized medicine is trying to put her out of business and smash the little black box.

“Anything that is valueless doesn’t have all that money spent to get rid of it,” she insisted.

SCHOOL BOARD HEAD BACKED “RAY” CLAIM

Mrs. Allen’s Testimony on Behalf of Inventor Discloses Belief in Remote Control Doctoring

Mrs. Eleanor B. Allen, president of the Los Angeles City Board of Education, is a firm and long-time believer in a disproved “radio therapy” machine whose manufacturer faces a Federal sentence for falsely claiming it can treat cancer by remote control across the continent.

Mrs. Allen’s testimony in U.S. Court on behalf of the machine and its originator, Dr. Ruth B. Drown, was disclosed yesterday as sentencing of the defendant was continued until Oct. 22.

A voluntary, unsubpoenaed witness for Dr. Ruth B. Drown, Mrs. Allen told a jury in U.S. Judge Harry C. Westover’s court recently of her faith in the gadget that Dr. Drown claimed could diagnose and treat literally thousands of ailments by tuning in on a drop of blood and broadcasting healing rays.

OPINION OF PANEL

She and her husband, Dr. Walter W. Allen, a Drown student, insisted the machine is a scientific marvel, although a scientific panel at the University of Chicago last January branded it “worthless.”

Under cross-examination by Asst. U.S. Atty. Tobias G. Klinger, Mrs. Allen said the Hollywood chiropractor’s device once cured her of pneumonia when she was in Atlantic City, N.J., and the machine was in Los Angeles.

Mrs. Allen said she had known Dr. Drown for 18 or 19 years and had given her a sample of her blood, which Dr. Drown kept on file. All that was needed to cure her of any ailment, the board president testified, was to have the machine broadcast treatments to her wherever she was.

INVESTIGATION BY FCC

An investigation of the machine by engineers of the Federal Communications Commission in 1947, according to Klinger, brought out how one male patient was subjected to “rays” from two plates that were found to be connected to the antenna and loudspeaker of a radio dialed to a local station.

Dr. Drown only requires a single drop of blood, Klinger said, because she contends the crystal formation of the blood remains the same always, like the crystals in radios. These crystals are supposed to activate the machine with the correct healing rays or, tuned in differently, to accomplish “absent diagnosis.”

Klinger emphasized the trial and conviction of Dr. Drown was not intended as a slur on the chiropractic profession.

BOARD’S CONCLUSION

Dr. Willard W. Percy, secretary of the State Board of Chiropractic Examiners, testified as a prosecution witness that in 1947 the board branded Dr. Drown’s invention as “without therapeutic value.”

Other expert witnesses described the machine as simply an “inefficient battery tester” which wiggles the needles of its dials better when used with a glass of water instead of a human.

The needles are activated, the experts testified, because human bodies - as well as an assortment of inorganic objects

• act an natural conductors for the passage of current between two pieces of dissimilar metals.

The University of Chicago conducted its tests with Dr. Drown’s consent and at the request of a Chicago society leader, formerly one of Dr. Drown’s patients. The mother of Actor Tyrone Power was present at the first sessions at the university, being at that time an ardent follower of Dr. Drown.

Dr. Drown at that time described her machine as “an apparatus which I claim utilizes the crystals in the drop of blood held together by a blotter which is in resonance with the energy that is tuned in from the body or other substance.”

Her claims, the investigative scientific panel concluded then, “appear to be totally unworthy of serious consideration by anyone, least of all by the university.”

HYPOTHETICAL QUESTION

Klinger, the transcript of Dr. Drown’s trial disclosed, asked Mrs. Allen a hypothetical question which in substance was this:

“Assume you were riding in an automobile in Moscow and Dr. Drown and her device were in Hollywood. You had an accident and received a broken leg, a fractured skull and were hemorrhaging. By telephone, Dr. Drown was informed you had been in an accident - nothing more.

“Using your blood sample on file, Dr. Drown would tune in the machine, which would diagnose your condition. Then she would tune in the treatment device. Is it, then, your contention that this would cure your broken leg and fractured skull and stop your hemorrhage.”

“Yes, yes,” Mrs. Allen testified. “The way you state it, Mr. Klinger, sounds like black magic, but it isn’t. It’s science.”

MACHINES IN HOME

Asked if she would seek a surgeon instead of the machine if she required surgery, Mrs. Allen said that use of the machine would preclude any need for surgery. The board president said she has two of Dr. Drown’s machines in her home, but is not versed in their operation.

Asked why, if the machine is so effective, her husband has been ill for five years, Mrs. Allen replied:

“That machine has kept him alive.”

The board president also testified that use of the “broadcast treatment” cured a rash that appeared on the hands of her son Tommy. Dr. Drown called the healing power of her invention “the invisible life force.”

“ATLAS” QUOTED

Dr. Allen, according to Klinger, is a former chiropractor who studied Dr. Drown’s “radio therapy” methods and often collaborated with Dr. Drown in the treatment of Mrs. Allen.

During the trial attention was called to the “Drown Atlas,” a sort of instruction book for doctors employing the machine. It is prefaced with a warning, a portion of which reads:

“Let us say here, for the benefit of those who do not know, that any patient who is weak and depleted should never take shower baths and stand in the water over the drain, because the patient’s magnetism is washed down with the water through the drain, leaving him depleted.

DOWN THE DRAIN

“Also a week patient after having a tub bath should leave the tub and have someone else drain the water and clean the tub… Too many people sit in the tub and drain the water before finishing the bath and their own magnetism is drained through the drain pipes to the ground, leaving the patient with much less reserve.”

Asked his opinion of this advice, Dr. Allen said he always took tub baths when possible.

“I usually let the cold water run into the tub before I get out because that is your source of pure energy coming right from the springs and the source,” he told the jury.

“I get out of the tub before letting the water out and I clean the tub with a long-handled brush. I don’t get down and rub it with a rag.”

HOSPITAL HEAT MACHINES ARE CONFISCATED BY FDA

NORFOLK - Federal Food and Drug Administration officials have seized two heat treatment machines owned by Norfolk General Hospital in the first step of a planned nationwide confiscation.

The machines, manufactured by the Diapulse Corp. of America, were claimed to be useful in treating some 300 diseases, and wounds, including arthritis, bursitis, fractures and infections - a claim labeled as “nothing less than sheer quackery” by a federal judge.

Robert Case, and agent for the food and drug administration in Baltimore, said today some 4,000 of the machines are in use by hospitals, clinics, chiropractors and other practitioners.

Norfolk General was singled out as the first target because federal court action “is faster” here than in Washington or Maryland.

The FDA had picked up samples of the machine in 1969, Case said, but the firm has been fighting action in the courts since then. An injunction against manufacture has now been obtained, he said.

The devices have been sold since the late 1950s at prices ranging from 2400 to 4000 each.

Although the machine itself is not harmful, Case said, harmful effects could result if someone suffering from a serious disease used it in lieu of appropriate treatment.

It all seemed very hopeless. I was taking about 9 different shots about twice a week. I then and there quit the shots and decided only God could help me.
