-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body, answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, as we find the disturbances here are the results of, or the effects of lack of the abilities of the glandular forces to supply elements to replenish muscular force in the locomotories especially, and this has been and is a progressive atrophy.
-
As we find, there may be material aid. We would begin with the consideration of the mental attitude of the body. These, to be sure, have much to do with the conditions and of the manner in which healing or progressing of inability of activities would come. But know you’re meeting only yourself, and as ye put more and more trust in Him (for who healeth all thy diseases?), the way may be shown thee. Then in Him look to the sources for health. We would begin with these:
-
First, we would have the Wet Cell Appliance with the Tincture of Iodine charged in same; then, carrying Chloride of Gold Sodium to the body also, in the proportions of one grain to one ounce of distilled water, using three ounces.
-
Prepare two pounds of the Copper Sulphate in the gallon and a half of distilled water; the other ingredients in proportion, but no charcoal. Suspend the bottle of the iodine in the solution, three ounces, and this charge for three minutes on the slow battery charge.
-
The small plate would be attached at the lumbar axis. The larger plate, through which the solution passes, would be attached at the umbilical and lacteal duct plexus, which on this particular body would be the width of three fingers directly from the right of the navel center and two fingers up.
-
Use this for thirty minutes each day.
-
Do have a good massage following same. This we would commence at the 9th dorsal and work to the end of the toes, the opposite from most, yes, but we are carrying to the extremities, into the circulation, that which goes to the muscular forces from the recharging of the vital energies, through the nerves which supply activity to the muscular forces and the tendons, and we will gain strength.
-
In the diet do add often more raw vegetables as lettuce, celery, carrots, tomatoes and the like but prepare these oft with gelatine.
-
Then keep a constructive attitude. Keep musical in self.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Should the osteopathic treatments I have been taking be continued? (A) Not necessarily in the beginning, but the massage (not necessarily osteopathic) would be given daily. After these properties of the Wet Cell Appliance have been taken for thirty days, about once a week a good osteopathic treatment would be very well; this as supplementary to the massage, you see. The massage should be given with equal portions of Olive and Peanut Oil.
-
(Q) Should injections of prostigmine be continued? (A) Leave off injections. This is not doing much good.
-
(Q) What manner of exercise would be helpful? (A) That which the body feels impelled in self to do, but don’t let the condition get you! You get the condition!
-
(Q) Does practicing or playing the harp contribute to my disability? (A) Will add to the betterment of the body.
-
(Q) Would it be detrimental to my physical progress to move to New York for professional reasons? (A) Would not be detrimental.
-
(Q) Can I regain normal use of my legs? (A) If the body will follow these through, almost normal use of the limbs.
-
We are through with this reading.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 6/28/44 Letter: ”…There was a delay in obtaining the Wet Cell Appliance due to the fact that Mr. Godfrey couldn’t supply a 2-gallon crock. But I have the Appliance now, and as soon as I have some further directions from Mr. Godfrey, I shall be able to get it charged and begin treatment… I have also checked with my D.O. and we do not understand just what is meant by the lumbar axis, whether it is at the beginning or the end of the lumbar. Can you please set us straight on this? I find it difficult to find words to express my gratitude to all…”
R2. 7/3/44 EC’s letter: ”…The lumbar axis is the axis in the pelvic area from which the nerves and muscles control the lower limbs. Usually this is considered the fourth lumbar…”
R3. 1/11/46 Letter: “Will you kindly send me a list of physicians in sympathy with this movement. I feel the need of advice and encouragement, and perhaps can receive some help in regard to the continuation of the treatment recommended in my Physical Reading…”
R4. 3/14/46 List of 6 physicians sent by GD.
R5. 3/17/46 Letter: ”…I had great difficulty in getting started with the Wet Cell Appliance… No one wanted to sell me acid without a prescription, and my medical doctor friend pooh-poohed the idea. I really am not at all satisfied with the Appliance, and I hope something can be done to improve it [Because of the war, was unable to get all the parts needed.]… It must be that I have not had as much help from it as possible either, for it is not possible for me to consistently have a treatment every day. I have a full time daily office job, and I do my harp teaching and concert work in the evenings… By the time I finish the evening, especially on concert nights, it is too late for a treatment. I have a treatment from my D.O. once a week… I am enclosing a clipping from our local paper, … dated 3/1/46… I should like to say that this is the first public announcement (via newspaper) ever made in reference to my physical condition. All these years, we have hidden it under a basket…”
R6. 9/10/46 Mother’s letter: ”…I want to thank you for the time you spent getting the information requested, although it was never used by her, as she was fatally injured by auto on 4/16/46 at … N.Y., while en route to Chicago, to take a new position as harpist…”
R7. 2/8/50 Mother’s letter: ”…I am in harmony with the work and methods you have used to present the valuable information gained thru EC… I discontinued my membership in ‘48 purely for financial reasons, but not my interest. I have preserved all the literature and records ever received and find satisfaction in knowing you are able to carry on. I try to pass along what I have gained through the A.R.E., and refer to my records quite often…”
Background
Background
B1. Born 8/6/12 in New York; res. Conn.; single.
B2. 7/18/43 Letter: “I have just finished reading THERE IS A RIVER, and I wish I might put in adequate words what it has done for me, but I can probably best show by telling you my story: I am a musician, a harpist, and will be 31 years old in August. I started to play the harp at a very early age, and hoped to be a successful professional musician. I had excellent health until I was about 18, when I began to notice a distinct disability of my legs. This condition has progressed, until at present, I walk with difficulty; cannot run at all, and cannot climb stairs unaided. My general health is still good. An endless stream of doctors of all kinds have looked at me, shaken their heads and admitted they do not know how I came by this condition, what to call it, or what to do about it. I have a very faithful osteopath to whom I go fairly regularly. I am certain that he has helped retard the progressive difficulty. These years would have been very discouraging ones because I have dreaded the thought of becoming dependent on others, except that somehow I knew that one day there would be shown to me someone who could help me to help myself. My mother has always been a seeker of truth, and so I have been brought up on the laws of karma, reincarnation and brotherly love; therefore, I recognize that this health condition must be an obstacle that I have to overcome by myself, but I truly need to be shown how. My doctors love me as a daughter, and would do anything in their power to help me get better…”
B3. 7/31/43 Letter: ”…My reason for believing that it might be a karmic debt is that no one has ever been able to give a satisfactory explanation of the cause of my trouble. I had such excellent health for all my childhood and adolescence. My legs became weakened so gradually that for 2 years it was practically imperceptible, and although I noticed that my activities were becoming increasingly difficult to perform, I thought at the time it was caused simply from lack of exercise. In trying to trace back, we decided that it began in the summer of 1930, without any apparent cause, accident or illness. I was given no treatment until the summer of 1932. Since then, I have been a veritable guinea pig. It has been called by one set of doctors ‘chronic progressive muscular atrophy’. Two years ago I did have an automobile accident, and the injury was to one knee which hampered my walking even more. This has left a scar but is no reason to hamper my walking permanently.”
B4. 3/6/44 Letter: ”…I have a typewriter at home, and also an automobile that I can use in a limited way…”
B5. 4/19/44 Questions submitted in addition to those at end of 5193-1: ”…I don’t mean to be selfish, but it is hard for me to know how much information is helpful, and how many questions to ask. I need and want help so very much… (1) If my central nervous system is all right, then what part of the nervous system is affected? (2) Is the end of my spine all right? (3) I am taking prostigmine by mouth in tablet form 3 times a day. Is this drug helpful, and if so, would it be better to have it injected? (4) Is the use of heated stones applied to my lower back of particular benefit? (5) Should I exercise in a special way, change my eating habits or change my thinking habits? (6) Where may I best follow the suggestions given in this Physical Reading…”
B6. 5/6/44 Card to mother regarding delayed Physical Reading appointment: “This morning the bottom dropped out of my hopes… I had so hoped that some kind of treatment might be prescribed, so that I could see improvement… I have been having a rather bad reaction from prostigmine, and have stopped taking it for the time being, but will begin again soon.”
B7. 5/9/44 Mother’s letter urging an early appointment for her daughter.
B8. 5/26/44 Questions submitted: ”…(1) Is my present osteopath treating me correctly? If not, how should he change? (2) Are the injections of prostigmine helpful? (3) How can I help myself? (4) Should I change occupations? I’m considering a move to N.Y. for professional reasons…”
