This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 20th day of April, 1944, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [5201], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the book, THERE IS A RIVER.

Born June 7, 1900, in Pomeroy, Penna. Time of Reading Set bet. 10:30 to 11:30 A. M. Eastern War Time. …, Texas.

1. GC: You will give the relations of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions, as I ask them.

2. EC: (Going back over yrs. to her birth date, June 7th, 1900) - What an unusually stormy day! [See 5201-1, Par. R5, R6 and R9.]

3. Yes, we have those records which are a portion of the experience of this entity in the material plane, as well as through those dimensions in which the entity has had consciousness during the interims.

4. All of these, as we find, tend toward that which should have been, and should yet be, the practice of the entity if it would unfold to the greater abilities in whatever direction the entity may choose to direct its efforts - MUSIC!

5. Whether stringed instruments, whether unusual types, do attempt to bring greater harmonies into the experience through the practice and through the application of self in making music. Even though it may be only on a comb or on glasses or on bells, on a harp, violin or a piano, MAKE MUSIC!

6. For this, if it is practiced, will tend to create the ability to commune with, to outline for the entity, that which has been the greater unfolding experience through the sojourns in the earth, as well as through those environs or vibrations during the interims.

7. These are definite. These would be better accomplished, adhered to or practiced in the experience of the entity. For, whether it is in a service in the home or elsewhere, it can be done in the nature of harmony in a musical vibration; whether it is in the ministering to the needs of others, as of interesting others, or as an aid or helpfulness to smaller groups, or children, or adults, through harmony, through music; for through the application of self in those directions there may come, there may be found, the greater abilities not only to hold to that already gained but to add to self the abilities of others in such, in being a contributory cause to a helpful influence or force in the minds of others.

8. As to the appearances in the earth and the effect from the astrological aspects, we find Venus, Jupiter and Mars. Hence we will find there will be confusions at times. There will be those periods of anger such that the entity will enrage others, but being calm, in harmony itself, there may be brought calm to others; not always High C or G, but that which meets the needs. For to the entity, tone and harmony, tone and music; that is, color - music takes on color to the entity. For the entity is a “sensitive” to the harmonies which in Venus, Mars and Jupiter may be unified by the entity. Thus, finding harmony in self, the entity may find itself raising beauty and tone and color in the lives of others to the better welfare of all.

9. Before this we find that the entity was in the land of the present nativity during the periods when in the ‘city of brotherly love’ there was added to the education of the young that of music, especially that which came from what were called the Swiss bell records, also the activities with unusual stringed instruments.

10. The entity was an adept. Hence the xylophone, the zither, bells and the like have particular interest for the entity; yet the various forms of music should be kept.

11. The name then was Martha Cusic.

12. Before that the entity was in the French land during the periods when many peoples were active in a service for a religious cause - or the Crusades.

13. The entity was left, yes, by its associate or companion. You’re having that trouble with the same companion at the present time! Those were the periods when the entity took advantage of the lonely times to compose, yes, to bring about various forms of musical activities and instruments; in the name then Renee Marceleus.

14. In the experience the entity gained, though it brought many periods of loneliness, many questionings from others. And these make the entity rather sensitive to criticism in the present. But know in Whom ye believe and know that it arises from the spiritual sources from within. Know that music is that which may span the distance from the finite to the infinite, and in same the entity may find the harmony necessary for the greater unfoldment.

15. Before that the entity was in the Egyptian land when there was the using of music as the means for the rhythm of the body in service. These the entity used to arouse the emotions of the body not for carnal reactions but the spiritual; as the dance that would unify the activities of individuals with the harmonies of life.

16. As to the abilities of the entity, then:

17. Music! Use same in every phase of thy endeavor, and it will bring the greater harmonies into the experience of the entity.

19. (Q) In what occupation would I both unfold and earn, and in what location or environment? (A) In Philadelphia, but in something having to do with music or emotion of the body; as in the dance, as in that which would pertain to the practical application of music for physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

20. (Q) Is marriage indicated, if so is there any action on my part necessary to arrive at a more constructive application? (A) This will depend upon how the entity uses itself, its abilities. It is indicated, if this is sought by the entity. And as we find, a little later, in the next two years, this should come about.

21. (Q) Please advise me on ways and means to fuller human relationships - both congenial and broadening? (A) In the harmonies from musical relationships and music as the basis of the social and harmonious relations.

R1. 6/14/44 She wrote: “To me the reading is indeed astonishing and naturally I will daily give careful attention to it in thought and feeling. Again I thank you.”

R2. 7/17/44 [5201]‘s letter to EC: “How I would like to talk over the import of that reading with you, but since that is not possible, let me make some comments.

“That the guidance in the reading should be to music dumbfounded me, for I seem so inept in that field being unable to distinguish a baritone voice from a tenor and being unable to recognize 1-2 and 3-4 time. You can well imagine the surprise I felt in finding music in my Life Reading.

“Inept as I seem however, let me tell you one or two small things. On one occasion I was under a severe emotional strain and though I knew absolutely nothing about singing I went to the third floor regularly to sing - up there where no one would be annoyed with the noise! When very young I was deeply hurt because my mother ridiculed the idea of my playing the violin. About eight years ago I was advised to take up writing and did so, with the private reservation in my heart that I was not going to get stuck in that, and simultaneously with the writing lessons I took up dancing and singing! The most refreshing relaxation I have is listening to the opera. Novels, movies, work do not afford me the lift that the opera does. It transports me. One of my deepest longings is to be a great singer and I listen avidly to the voices that click with me - Lily Pons, Nelson Eddy, Marian Anderson, Richard Crooks and a few others.

“The best dancing teacher I had never took my study and pursuit of the dance as sincere - again because I was so inept. One other teacher even got rid of me because I was so awkward.

“However, I am not at all deterred in my love for those two arts, but I am indeed much mystified.

“Do these loves belong to the soul and not at all to the mind and body? How I would ever make a living at either music or dancing I do not know and cannot imagine. But I do hope to be able to make enough money someday at window display so that I can study some instrument.

“You are quite right about bells - I love them deeply. Chimes make me quiver.

“The other tremendous surprise was that the environment for me is Philadelphia. I have not felt physically comfortable there and I have had such wry associations and do have such unhappy reminders there. However, there must be some basis for the appearance of that environment in the reading.

“If you have time and care to comment or throw light on these seeming contradictions between the reading and the actual I would be pleased and appreciative.

“I would like a Physical Reading since I have not been feeling as well as I would like and also I would like a check-up Life Reading. What are the prospects for them?”

R3. 7/24/44 EC’s letter to [5201]: “I have yours of the 17th and note what you have to say about your Life Reading. We have often found, through the information that is given in such readings, that the experiences of many are like yours.

“There is something that seems to be part of the very soul of the entity, for this is evidently of the soul, and not of the physical being. As it is about the environment, so it is about the condition, itself. Our experience with individuals who have had such suggestions for them is that if they will follow through with the suggestions, they would very soon find that the soul’s response would make for a most satisfactory gain in that direction.

“I believe, so far as the environ is concerned, that when you had changed your attitude or your purposes and followed through with the suggestions toward singing, that you would really find openings, and that doubtless these hadn’t existed

• or had appeared to be resentment - before.

“My suggestion would be to follow through. At least, give it an honest chance, for you certainly could not be the loser. And from the thousands we have had who have gotten wonderful results, it would apparently be worthwhile.

“It is something, of course, that you have to do yourself, and I do hope you will find real help by following through.”

R4. 10/29/49 [5201]‘s reply to Questionnaire:

Q-1. Do you still have a copy of your Life Reading? A-1. “Yes, indeed.”

Q-2. How many times have you read your Life Reading? (If many times, give approximate number.) A-2. “Not many, but at intervals.”

Q-3. Did you read it to or with someone else and, if so, what was the relation of the person to you? A-3. “Two close friends heard it soon after I received it.”

Q-4. Have you given a copy of your reading to anyone and, if so, what was the relationship to you of that person? A-4. “I let one friend have a copy with a phrase or two deleted.”

Q-5. How recently have you read your Life Reading? A-5. “In the last year or two, I think?”

Q-6. In what respects do you feel that your Life Reading was (1) true, (2) false, (3) correct, (4) imaginary, (5) hocus pocus, (6) inaccurate, (7) incomplete, (8) trivial? A-6. “Very, very true about music, incomplete with respect to past incarnations.”

Q-7. Do you believe in a reincarnation of the soul and, if so, why? A-7. “Yes - because I seem to have met people whom I knew before.”

Is it (a) a state to which a people aspire, (b) a state to which an individual aspires, (c) an environmental influence, (d) a hereditary influence, (e) something you yourself have done or thought or left undone and unthought in a previous incarnation? A-8. “Possibly (e) - its action and reaction.”

Q-9. Have you in any respect consciously changed your (1) vocation, (2) thoughts, (3) actions or reactions toward others as a result of your Life Reading? A-9. “I sought in a quiet way musical people.”

Q-10. Assuming your life to be no casual accident or experiment, do you have any new or different concept as to the purpose of your life as a result of your Life Reading? A-10. “Music as a possibility which it never was before.”

Q-11. Have you ever systematically or otherwise set a part of your day, week, month or any other period of your time for introspection or an examination and analysis of your inner self (and we do not mean writing in a diary) as suggested in your Life Reading? If not, why not and, if so, are there any results measurable to you? A-11. “Yes - but I do not meditate or pray regularly. I just am more comfortable spontaneously.”

Q-12. Do you regard your vocation, whether it be as laborer, supervisor, manager, official, engineer, lawyer, doctor, housewife, mother, or what not, as the dominant force in your life or do you look upon your vocation as an agency through which you can the better fulfill your purpose in this life? A-12. “An agency.”

Q-13. How, in your opinion, can our Association best carry on the work of Edgar Cayce and the good for which he stood? A-13. “I have wondered often but still don’t have an idea.”

Q-14. What have you done about bringing music into your life? A-14. “I bought a little harp but found it confusing to learn. But I have studied singing again with a new point of view and am very happy in it.”

THE COATESVILLE RECORD, COATESVILLE, PA. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1952

WHAT KIND OF A DAY WAS JUNE 7, 1900, IN POMEROY? IT’S IMPORTANT TO KNOW

A research foundation down in Virginia Beach, Va., has written to the “Regional Director, United States Department of Commerce, U.S. Weather Bureau, Pomeroy, Pa.,” whoever or whatever that might be, asking what kind of weather Pomeroy enjoyed between 12.01 a.m. and 12 midnight on June 7, 1900. The letter somehow fell into the hands of City Clerk Frank P. Pennegar who looked at it once and gave up.

Perhaps there is someone living in this vicinity who was married on that day or who remembers the day by some other momentous event who could tell just what kind of a day it was. Then somebody may have an old diary that would give this information. If some one had the patience to look up the late William T. Gordon’s weather records he could find out what kind of a day it was in Coatesville and it is very likely that the same kind of weather existed in Pomeroy, four miles west.

It is pretty certain that it did not snow in Pomeroy on that day or that the temperature dropped down to zero. According to the calendar June 7, 1900 was a Thursday. Pomeroy was a busy place at that time. John Leech was the PRR station agent and Howard Emery was his assistant. Bill Schofield ran the PRR freight station, while John H. Irwin was section foreman. The Pomeroy & Newark railroad was operating two round trips a day to Newark, Delaware and Amos Osmond was conductor of the train. The round trip railroad fare from Pomeroy to Philadelphia was $2.11.

Farmers from all around brought their milk to Pomeroy station to send it to Philadelphia on the milk train. They generally came in plenty of time and hung around the station swapping stories until the train came and then helped to place the milk aboard. This morning’s meeting of the farmers served as a news dispensing agency. Among the subjects discussed at that time was the new store that B. F. Meredith, Sr., was opening in the village, and the political prospects of Frank Russell.

Squire Stern whose long white beard was the envy of Santa Claus held court in his coal yard office. A large amount of feldspar from the Meredith quarries in West Caln was being shipped from Pomeroy, and the McManus quarries were running full blast. George K. Irwin was the “paper boy” who carried the papers to Sadsburyville each day. Things really were happening in Pomeroy on that date but that doesn’t answer the question at hand. Perhaps someone with more information can do so.

R6. 2/16/52 Newspaper article in response to the 1/22/52 letter from Gladys Davis requesting weather information for June 7, 1900 in Pomeroy, Pennsylvania:

COATESVILLE, PA., SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1952

JUNE 7, 1900, WAS VERY FIND DAY IN POMEROY BUT NEXT DAY IT RAINED!

Thursday, June 7, 1900 was a very fine day in both Coatesville and Brandywine Manor, and it must have been a fine day in Pomeroy too. So a momentous question raised by a research organization located at Virginia Beach, Va., has at last been satisfactorily settled.

Frank Glading, of the Scott Senior High School, looked up the records of the late William T. Gordon, who for many years was United States weather observer here, and found that while the weather in Coatesville - which is four miles due east of Pomeroy, was fine on that day and for several days previously, the next day it rained.

Mr. Gordon’s record for the day was: “Temperature 7 a.m. 63 degrees; 2 p.m, 85 degrees; 9 p.m., 70 degrees; maximum 85 degrees; minimum 45 degrees; mean temperature, 71.4 degrees; daily range, 31 degrees; light wind, very fine day.” At 12:30 a.m. the following day it started to rain and .07 of an inch fell.

June 7, 1900 was also a fine day at Brandywine Manor, ten miles northeast of Pomeroy, according to Mrs. Hattie N. McClure Forest, who writes the Record:

“In your columns of February 12 there is an inquiry concerning the weather of June 7, 1900. I have kept a diary for many years and so I went to the attic and found the 1900 edition. That day was pleasant and pretty hot with morning temperature registering 51 degrees. I had no trouble remembering the day as it was my father’s birthday - namely J. Grier McClure.

“Hattie N. McClure Forest, (Mrs. Elmer W. Forest)”

And that’s that.

R7. 3/28/52 GD’s note: Could the exclamation made by EC at the beginning of 5201-1, “1900 - What an unusually stormy day!” have reference to political discussions or happenings; or perhaps to some stormy discussion right in [5201]‘s family at the time? [See Mrs. [5201]‘s 7/22/79 letter at Par. R10 below, saying: “Uncle Howard once remarked - What a stormy day I was born on. He belonged to a family known for its faculty to remember.”]

R8. 7/8/60 E.C.F. mailing,to enquire if she had done any research on her former incarnation as Martha Cusic, was ret’d UNCLAIMED.

“COMMENTS:

RE: THE EXCLAMATION ‘WHAT AN UNUSUALLY STORMY DAY (JUNE 7, 1900)’ Uncle Howard once remarked - What a very stormy day I was born on. He belonged to a family known for its faculty to remember.

RE: MUSIC - I have wondered if Mr. Cayce because he perceived a deep-seated need for harmony in me, projected that need to music. The reply 10/27/79 on this topic is correct.

RE: MARRIAGE - The hope to marry again, indicated as a possibility by Mr. Cayce - UNFULFILLED. Not even a man friend. I have wondered if the sister in this life could be the “companion” referred to by Mr. Cayce on page 3 [5201-1, Par. 13]. The relationship with the sister has been a steady agonizing defeat - no fights, not hot words - just insults, humiliations, rejections 1906-1979. Tho advised by a doctor to avoid a rupture, I should long ago have shed the bondage to her, and therefore suspect sex as the underlying cause of it.

RE: ANSWERS AND QUESTIONNAIRE 10/29/49 [Par. R4 above] - My answer to #6 should have been “helpful, but still obsure” on occupation and music, and to #9 - should be “not much.”

I might add that taken as a whole, the reading does seem, now after 35 years, as incomplete. I had hoped for more.

However, it has been very satisfying to have the copy, and I thank you.”
