This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 5th day of June, 1944, in accordance with request made by self - Miss [5203], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the article in Coronet.

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them.

2. EC: Yes. As we find, there are a great deal of disturbances with this body, especially as related to the disorders which have existed respecting the effects produced in the auditory forces of the body. The general conditions which have existed have caused the colds, congestion, inflammation in soft tissue in the mastoid areas and in the ear.

3. These as we find, need first purification of the system so that the poisons which have existed long, from a character of infection which has become acute in these conditions, may be eliminated and thus make for much bettered conditions.

4. We would set up drainages by using a compound prepared in this manner: Prepare together equal amounts of Sulphur, Cream of Tartar, Rochelle Salts, a level tablespoonful of each to begin with. Stir thoroughly together.

5. Each morning before any meal is taken, take a level teaspoonful of the mixture, see?

6. Do have occasionally, once a week or once in ten days, a thorough massage, following a light sweat bath or, better, a Fume Bath.

7. These, then, with keeping up the applications which are being made, will allow for drainages to improve and will prevent more of the adherence of tissue in scar tissue to interfere with the activities of the auditory forces.

8. We would use the hearing aid (the Audiphone) which as we find should be the more applicable for the conditions here.

9. As to whether there will be the full regaining of or improving in the hearing will depend a great deal upon the mental and spiritual attitude of this body.

10. For, if the body is kept physically purged, there will be quite a difference. Not necessarily overtaxing by continued taking of this compound to cleanse, but be mindful of the diets and that it is as necessary to keep the body coordinating and clean as it is to keep the mental attitude right as well as the correct spiritual purposes and desires and, most of all, keep all three consistently; and don’t be one thing in one way and another in another way. He who doubts that the best will come to him with doing of that which is correct is already defeated. Don’t blame others for what has happened or may happen. Do right yourself, physically, mentally and spiritually, and the best will come to you.

12. (Q) What brought the deafness and the ringing in head? (A) As has been indicated, these come from infections forces which leave poisons in the system. Clear them, and we will have bettered conditions. Read just what we have given.

13. (Q) Has the operation performed about 2 years ago helped any or has it caused a further impairment? (A) The operation helped, but it didn’t remove the sources of infection, and we are attempting to give that which will aid in clearing these.

14. (Q) Will Honolulu climate be detrimental to my condition? (A) This is just as good - better than would be in the home state.

15. (Q) Are vitamins helpful in any way? (A) Vitamins are very helpful, especially the B complex and for this body especially “E” or use on the cereals the kernel or heart of wheat. B-1 complex would be very good for the body also, as prepared by Miles Laboratories.

The hearing aid is impossible to get here, and I would prefer not wearing one if at all possible. I shall observe any improvement and I shall immediately write you…”

B2. 9/23/43 Letter: “Some years ago I had a great deal of difficulty with colds. I contracted several that persisted for weeks. I hardly recovered from one before I had another. I was studying law at the time, working all hours of the day and night, for a period of 4 years, which no doubt contributed in a large measure to my run-down condition and consequently colds. Imperceptibly, my hearing began to become bad, but did not notice it until 1 very severe cold caused a ringing in my head which has never stopped. When I noticed my hearing was not as acute as it had once been, I immediately consulted a specialist, and he found that I had infected tonsils, which were removed immediately. Because of the swollen condition, the tonsils had caused the Eustachian tube to become partially closed in the right ear, the left ear apparently not being affected at the time. However, through a sympathetic condition, I’m sure, the left ear is impaired as to hearing also. I have spent thousands of dollars submitting to all sorts of treatments, using earphones which were unsatisfactory, and even submitted to a very costly operation whereby a new channel was built and joined to the right ear. I had great hopes that that would solve the problem, but I have not found that it has done very much good. It was an exceedingly slow process in healing, and was a very painful operation to undergo. I do not regret having had the operation (although it was an expense I could ill afford), yet I have the satisfaction of knowing I tried everything I possibly could. About a month ago, I had the misfortune to have an abscess in back of the right ear. At first the doctor thought it was an infection of the mastoid bone, but after being taken to the hospital for a period of observation, it was found to be merely an abscess, and several days later it began to drain into the new passage behind the right ear. It still drains to some extent, but does not pain in any way. I believe that the abscess has caused a further impairment of my hearing, which is very inconvenient. I was at one time interested in music and was very good on the violin. I had to drop that entirely. I have had my degree and license to practice law for some 10 years, and had every reason to believe I had a bright future till my hearing became impaired. I had been very fortunate in securing jobs, and have retained them at great odds, as you can imagine. I have necessarily been limited in progress, and even if an opportunity were to present itself, I should be very hesitant about accepting it. I have, therefore, had to take mediocre positions, not commensurate with my ability or training; have had to work twice as hard as others for half as much pay. Necessarily such handicap makes the future look extremely black. I shouldn’t even want to marry anyone under such circumstances… Life is hardly worth the struggle as it now stands with me…”

B3. 12/16/43 Letter: ”…I have today received orders to proceed to the Hawaiian Islands…”

B4. 1/17/44 Questions submitted in addition to those at end of 5203-1: ”…(1) Why is my hearing affected when I eat? (An abscess formed in the new channel back of the right ear last August, and drained for about 6 weeks. It cleared up for a couple of months, and began again and is still draining after about 3 months.) (2) What brought about this condition, and can it be cured? (3) Will I have to undergo a further operation to close the new channel in order to stop the draining? (4) Is any other physical condition contributing to my loss of hearing, and subsequent drainage of the new channel? (5) Would a hearing aid be of any benefit? (6) Are there any satisfactory hearing aids which are not so uncomfortable and inconvenient to wear? (7) Are there any treatments that can be taken to alleviate this condition, and if so, is there anyone in Honolulu who can give them to me? (Due to ear condition, I will not be able to return to the States until after the duration.) (8) If I cannot get any treatments until my return, will it cause any further impairment? (9) Is there any self-treatment I can administer that will help? (10) Is there any likelihood that my hearing will get worse as I grow older, providing I take good care of myself physically? (11) Why do certain pitches, usually high-pitched voices, register better than low ones? (12) Do colds contribute to impair my hearing? If so, what can I do to stop them? (13) Will the impairment eventually prevent my earning a livelihood? (14) How is my general health, and how can I keep it in good condition? (15) Is the doctor who has been treating me for the last 2 years a good one? (16) Is there any way in the world to restore my hearing in either or both ears?…”
