This Psychic Reading was given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association for Research and Enlightenment, Inc., Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 9th day of June, 1944, in accordance with request made by self - Mr. [5218], new Associate Member of the Association for Research and Enlightenment, recommended by the article in “Coronet” Magazine.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis and Gussie W. Millaway, Stenos.]
Time of Reading Set bet. 10:30 to 11:30 A. M. Eastern War Time. …, Va.

GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [5218].
-
As we find, there are disturbances. These are of a rather complex nature, as they involve glandular reactions and have been gradually building until there are those incoordinations between the eliminating systems of the body. Thus, this condition in the circulation of the superficial circulation, or portions of the lymph in the superficial circulation, has become acute or of a nature which produces a violent reaction in the form of acne or mucous and pus forming between the skin and that produced by the glands, and it has become acute.
-
These, as we find, are the sources and the causes of the disturbance on face and part of body; face, to be sure, giving the greater portion of the disturbance.
-
The eliminations are incoordinations between the liver and the kidneys and thus are the sources, or areas through which there must come the application, through the change in the activities of same to bring betterment, if these conditions would be removed.
-
We would first then begin with a compound prepared in this manner:
Sulphur…1 tablespoon, Rochelle Salts…1 tablespoon, Cream of Tartar…1 tablespoon.
-
Mix these very thoroughly. Then take a level teaspoonful of this mixture each morning, either in water or dry, before any meal is taken.
-
When this whole quantity has been taken, begin with osteopathic adjustments in the 6th dorsal, 3rd and 4th dorsal, 3rd cervical and the lumbar areas. These take about twice a week.
-
When these are taken, just before the adjustments are made, have the short-wave or radio-wave treatments to break up centers in their vibrations.
-
When there has been given at least twelve of the adjustments and the short-wave treatments, leave off and after a period of five to six days, begin again and take the compound, to purify, to change the vibrations in the body-forces.
-
When these have been taken, take again the adjustments with the short wave. We should then begin to see, by the time the first series is ended, changes for betterment, and by the last series, we should have (while the scars will not be removed) bettered conditions through the body.
-
Do be careful that there are not quantities of pastries, pies, or candies, especially chocolate nor carbonated waters. These, as we find, will be hard on the body; though Coca Cola, if it is taken without carbonated water, will be beneficial for the body in clarifying or purifying the kidneys and bladder disorder.
-
Keep these in the manner suggested, and we will bring better conditions to this body, [5218].
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Are mental and/or nervous disturbances the cause of my condition, or are they symptoms of it? (A) These are symptoms, not causes, in these conditions.
-
(Q) Do various shaving applications affect the condition? (A) These are not causes, these are the effects. For these need to be regularly used, see?
-
(Q) Which would be best to use for shaving? (A) As we find a brush lather and Hadleys’ shaving cream.
-
(Q) Any other advice? (A) Do these things and we will bring better conditions for this body.
-
We are through with this reading.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 7/22/44 Letter: ”…Mr. Cayce’s reading interests me greatly. Somehow I believe that it is the thing I have been needing. I shall certainly follow his advice as quickly as possible. I may, unfortunately, have to delay it for a short while. My dilatory behavior is induced solely by necessity. I find my finances at a low ebb. I had become so despondent over my physical difficulties several weeks ago that I undertook psychiatric treatment in an effort to keep myself on an even keel. The psychiatrist did me a great deal of good; my skin condition has cleared up; and I feel immensely better; but I am cleaned out of cash… When I see my way clear on the new line of treatment, I shall take it on; for I am sure that it will carry me farther along the line to complete recovery. There are still a few symptoms kicking around that I do not like. It is quite possible that the osteopathic and short-wave therapy recommended may be obtained through the Navy…”
R2. 9/11/44 Letter: ”…Dr. Waters is a most remarkable woman and a competent practitioner. I have enjoyed immediate and marked improvement as a result of my two treatments so far. Her attitude is especially gratifying, since she considers the whole body… I am more encouraged at this point than I have been for many months… I forgot to mention, Dr. Waters has no diathermy equipment, so am not getting this prior to treatments.”
R3. 12/5/44 Letter: ”…Since my series of treatments recommended in your reading of 9 June 1944 has just been completed, I should like at this time to submit a complete report with comments thereon. I shall report in detail, so your staff may clear the files of fragmentary reports submitted previously.
Treatments were taken as follows: 23-29 July, inclusive: took compound of Rochelle salts, cream of tartar, sulphur, as directed. 3 August 1944: Treatment from Dr. Felix Swope of …, Va., not inclined to be sympathetic. 7 and 11 August 1944: treatments from Dr. Blood of …, Va., 13-19 August, inclusive: suspended treatments; had to be away from town for 1 week. 22, 25, 28 August and 1 September: treatments from Dr. Blood. His treatments had little effect. He seemed to feel that his own diagnosis and treatment would have more value than any obtained via Mr. Cayce. When Dr. Waters, recommended in the reading, returned from her vacation, treatments were started with her, and proceeded as follows: 5, 8, 11, 15, 19, 22, 26 and 29 September 3; 3, 6, 10, 13 October osteopathic treatments from Dr. Waters. 15-21 October inclusive, took compound as directed. 22, 27, 31 October; 3, 6, 10, 14, 17, 20, 24, 28 November; 1 December completed series of treatments with Dr. Waters. The first 2 treatments were taken from Dr. Waters without the short wave as recommended. She did not understand that this was what the reading recommended. All treatments thereafter were accompanied with the short-wave treatments. Some were given prior to the osteopathic treatment, some afterward, depending on Dr. Water’s schedule, and the necessity for working other patients in. Short-wave was not always directed to the specific parts of the body indicated in the reading, but was applied to various parts of the body and face in an effort by the doctor to give special attention to liver, kidney, etc. Treatment with the short-wave averaged about 45 minutes each time. Osteopathic adjustments and massage took about 30 or 40 minutes. The adjustments, too, were applied over a wide area, though the doctor made an effort to treat the specific points each time. Toward the last, she concentrated pretty heavily on the points mentioned in the reading. Generally, Dr. Waters tried most conscientiously to do her best for me, and to follow the reading according to her understanding of it. It may be seen, however, from the above, that it was not followed exactly.
Results: There has been considerable improvement. I no longer descend to the depths of despair as I did on many occasions before taking the treatments - a situation which drove me to a psychiatrist and to the expenditure of considerable money on treatments with other doctors. On various occasions, for several days at a time, during the course of the treatments, I felt better than I had felt for many months previously. Invariably, however, the breaking out on the face would recur, and I would again feel generally miserable. A few days of being broken out, and I would again feel in pretty good shape. I should say that my periods of depression have been fewer and not so low - my periods of good feeling have been more numerous and on a higher plane. One thing that remains particularly stubborn is my elimination. Dr. Waters tried desperately to induce good bowel movement, with no success. I have tried various exercises, diets, etc., but nothing seems to do any good. At present, in a desperate effort to keep my elimination regular, I am taking Carter’s Little Liver Pills. So far, I have been taking them for about a week, they seem to be doing pretty well. I haven’t yet determined what the reaction should be if I were to stop. And, of course, my face still breaks out. Not often is it bad. Many people are not conscious of it at all. But it is there, and it bothers me because I have fought it so long. I feel, somehow, that I am on the verge of final recovery, that a step or 2 farther is all that is necessary for complete riddance of a most annoying condition. It is difficult to explain what that would mean to me and to my family, and I won’t bore you with it, except to say that it will give us all a new lease on life. I have become virtually a neurotic on this thing. I know that my mental attitude only makes matters worse; but, despite ample intelligence, I can’t build a proper mental attitude while the condition persists. So much for that. I feel intuitively that you understand anyway… To get to the point, since my condition has not been entirely corrected, I am anxious to know whether or not you are able to give check readings at this time. If you are, I shall be pleased to know when one can be arranged. In addition to any new diagnostic and remedial information you may be able to provide, answers would be welcome on the following questions: (1) How may Dr. Waters refine her technique of treatment, both osteopathically and with short-wave, to achieve greater results? At what rates, or frequencies, should the shortwave be applied, and to what portions of the body? (2) If osteopathic treatments should be continued, would satisfactory results be obtained at the rate of 1 treatment per week? (Navy routine makes 2 a week most difficult). (3) How does my violent allergy to alcohol, taken internally in any form, relate to my skin condition. How can this allergy be eliminated? (4) Will some form of hypnosis help to rid me of my skin trouble? If so, to whom should I turn for this type of treatment? (5) Where can Hadley’s Shaving Cream be obtained? I have been unable either to find it, or to find anyone who has heard of it. My most sincere thanks…”
R4. 12/9/44 IMG’s letter: “We wish to thank you for your letter of 12/5 which contained a complete and detailed report on the manner in which you have followed the suggestions given in your Physical Reading. Mr. Cayce’s illness makes it impossible for us to offer you an appointment for a check reading at any time in the near future… In view of this, we suggest that you continue to use the information given you in your reading, keeping the treatments in detail as outlined. The fact that your condition is not entirely cleared indicates the importance of carrying out the reading just as the instructions were given…”

Background
Background
B1. Born 1/6/08 in California; married; 2 children; school administrator U.S. Navy; Catholic.
B2. 8/29/43 Letter: ”…I have spent 22 years and considerable money fighting a condition that has caused me great mental distress, affected my personality immeasurably, and limited my achievement in many ways. No treatment has been completely successful. My trouble is a chronic breaking out on my face. It began when I was about 13 years old, and has been with me more or less ever since. It comes and goes, but never leaves me quite completely. At times, for no reason I can deduce, my face is a mass of eruptions. I have been to numerous doctors, have tried all kinds of remedies, have experimented with diets, and have in short made it my major interest in life to lick this difficulty. I have been so concerned and so pre-occupied with it, that it colors everything I think, say or do. I am desperately anxious to be thoroughly rid of it, and I am certain that the clue, when it is discovered, will be amazingly simple…”
B3. 11/26/43 Letter: ”…Unfortunately, my condition has become worse, so much so, that I beg you to try to find time to give me the help I need… What worries me most is the effect that it has had upon my memory, my power of concentration, my ability to think and my capacity for work. The thing has gone past the point where I can control my reactions and regard it objectively. I have fought it for 22 years. It has given me such an inferiority complex that I am amazed that I have been able to get as far along in the world as I have. I have been to countless doctors, had all manner of tests, spent hundreds of dollars. I have tried diets of various kinds, soaps, lotions, appliances, lamps, everything that offered some ray of hope. I am at a stage in my career now where everything depends upon contacts with other persons… My greatest worry is the condition of my mind. I am afraid that, at its present rate of deterioration, it will soon be useless… I say this with full knowledge that it’s a silly thing to say, that others are far worse off, that having one’s face broken-out is such a little thing - I have given myself all the arguments over and over day after day… Somehow, they are no longer effective… You may wonder why I do not seek help from the Navy’s medical department. I have; but I get what I’ve always received: some salve with directions to apply before retiring, etc.”
B4. 5/30/44 Letter: ”…Essentially, there is only one question: (1) What is causing my acne and what can I do to eliminate it? (2) Is there any drug that will effect a cure of acne in my case? (3) If my condition is not actually acne, what is it? (4) Will diet control help to alleviate my condition or cure it? If so, what specific dietary measures should be employed.
General Statement: Since the age of 13, my face has been broken out almost continuously. During the last few years, there have been occasional periods when it has cleared. Innumerable treatments have been tried, but doctors claim that there is no cure for it. They do, however, state that cases of acne have disappeared for reasons unknown. Certain things have been claimed by various doctors to bear some relation to acne: diet-fatty foods, sweets, etc.; nervous conditions - worry, tension, strain. The fact remains that many extremely nervous persons do not have acne. Furthermore, persons whose diets break all known rules do not have acne. In other words, for all reasons given as responsible for acne, there are an infinite number of instances in which these reasons do not apply. There is ample reason to believe, therefore, that acne is due to something not covered by any of the known hypotheses. True, the cause may vary from one individual to another; thus the above questions… I look forward to June 9 with a more fervent prayer and excruciating hope that I can express. Twenty-three years is a long time to fight such an annoying problem; and the fight does strange things to a man’s personality. I recently spent several weeks under the care of a neurologist here until he admitted defeat. At present, I am visiting a psychiatrist regularly in an effort to learn how I may endure it if I cannot cure. The long search for a solution leads me to lean heavily upon you in the belief that only a power such as yours can succeed where so many others have failed.”
