This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 6th day of June, 1944, in accordance with request made by the self, Mr. [5250], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the book, THERE IS A RIVER.

Born February 2, 1921, in Greenville, Michigan. Time of Reading Set bet. 3:30 to 4:30 P. M. Eastern War Time. …, Georgia.

1. GC: You will give the relations of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we are given the records here of that entity now known as or called [5250].

3. In giving an interpretation of the records, the desire is that this should be a helpful experience for the entity and it may be, if the entity will act upon those suggestions which may be indicated.

4. Here we have an unusual entity. For the entity is an Atlantean and will in this experience either make a marvelous success or a miserable failure with its life.

5. It is up to the entity, then, in its experience, in its associations, with others, in its dealing with opportunity with others, with conditions and circumstances, to use all in a constructive way and manner and, when there are those periods when disturbance and disappointments come, to have in the spiritual ideals, the mental and mental purposes, that which will keep the body from seeking only gratifying of physical appetites.

6. There is little, if anything, which has to do with human behavior, about which the entity does not know a great deal.

7. The relationship with sex has a special, definite urge on the body and this may become the stumbling block, but rather is it that the apparent egotism, the sarcasm, the “know-it-all” expression of the entity may be the greater curse to the entity.

8. Study self in its relationships to not merely a physical world, for as the body will find, if it will analyze itself, it is made up of physical body with all of those appetites of a physical being. These may be cultivated or they may be held in abeyance by the mind of the entity.

9. Thus, there is a physical-body and there is a mind-body which the entity may or may not control; may or may not control the appetites of the flesh, dependent upon the ideals. Ideals indicate not merely the mental process but the acceptance of something outside of self as an ideal state for body and mind, or a spiritual realm also. These may be one or they may be separated, but each has its influence one upon the other. The ideal is unattainable. Those who have come to the attitude of seeking physical gratification find that this is plain hell itself. This is very much the attitude of the entity to satisfy it, to gratify it to Satan. This becomes the weakling, the attitude of those who only know gratifying of some physical desire, some appetite, some attribute of the physical body which may be satiated.

10. These become, then, those problems for this particular body. Analyze self, body, mind, soul, and ye will find a counterpart in Him who would be thy redeemer. Are ye working with, not for, but with God? Ask that man be co-creator with, not for, not by, but WITH that which is best within self of physical, of mind, of soul, of spirit. Do that; if you would find self.

11. Yes, the individual entity is capable of writing. Rhythm may appeal most, a song or two a little later, but better the astrological facts or astrological periods when facts may be used as the basis or the background through which the entity may present paralleling of ideas and ideals and indicate to the readers the difference in an ideal and an idea.

12. Ideas may be merely thoughts. As they run the course through those activities and minds of individuals, they may become crimes or they become miracles, dependent upon that with which the individual entity gives the thought or the idea to an ideal, or merely to an experimentation, as ye have in the sojourns in the earth, as ye did particularly in those periods when in the Atlantean land there were the separations of sex from the individual entity, the gratification.

13. And thus a beautiful body of the opposite sex becomes the highest idea of Satan for the entity. It’s a poor excuse for anything, gratifying, satisfying. Or it may be that which may bring peace and harmony. It may bring satiation for a while but appetites prevent it becoming other than that which must eventually destroy its own self. Gratifying of same only destroys the own self. It is given for opportunity, for joy, for gratification, of a period as well as for assistance in creation, but used as for gratifying of self alone it is hell.

14. As to the appearances, these have been far apart. These have been unusual, there are those capabilities and possibilities, but unless the entity uses them in constructive, creative, spiritualized purposes, they may turn again and rend thee.

15. Before this we find the entity was in those periods following the American Revolution, the entity was then in a position in an eastern center where there were those groups of the Tory and also the government or the freedom-seeking individuals. The entity could take advantage of both, and did, to its own disturbing. In the name then Cowan Arnold.

16. In the experience the entity gained mentally, the entity lost spiritually, the entity lost materially in the end. But the experiences may be met, may be applied in the present in relationships with others, as well as in the relations with things and conditions.

17. Use the opportunities, even though self may be in the present where it may take advantage of circumstance, use them for good of all, or they will turn again upon thee and use thee as the gratifying of their own appetite.

18. Before that we find the entity was in the Spanish land when there were those early periods of adventure, and the settling in other lands, those lands from which the fruits of the earth, of nature, might be gathered.

19. The entity then was among those who were in authority in those periods when Mexico, South America were being exploited.

20. In the name then Herman Hernandez, the entity lived in luxury and in what many would call vice. For those of the opposite sex were oft its playthings and these became then, eventually, those which brought sorrow, sadness into the life, causing the entity in the end to destroy its own self. Don’t let it happen again! But there must be those curbings of cynicism, of “know-it-all”, of criticism. But find in each individual, find in each purpose those things wherein there may be something with which you agree. Use those, don’t abuse the rest, for it will one day meet you face to face. Abuse of any is a curse to self.

21. Before that we find the entity was in the Persian land, in the “city in the hills and the plains”. The entity was then among those who were in authority in the caravans which passed to and fro through this land. For the entity’s interest in not only slave girls, but also the pearls made for visitations to the land of Saad or the Indian land, also in Persia and Egypt.

22. The entity came to know something of the teachings, something of the experiences of those activities in the “city in the hills” and learned a lesson there and it brought to the entity the greater hope which still is a part of the soul of the entity.

23. Know there is a way that is right, and it is not unattainable by the entity, the way is straight and narrow, yet it is not a life of horror, a life of sadness, but a life of doing for others.

24. Find each day where ye may help someone less fortunate in some way, whether in body, in mind, in opportunity, in circumstance. Help not for pay, not just because you want to help, but because he is your brother, because he is yourself, for as ye do unto others ye do to thy Maker and there was a first cause and ye must one day give account for the deeds done in the body. Don’t fret yourself, this will come to pass!

25. In that manner, then, may the entity, as through that experience, find that which will bring the greater help, the greater joy, the greater experiences of life. Just being kind to others, being patient, showing brotherly love, showing gentleness and not criticism, fault-finding. For there is so much good in the worst that it would never behoove thee to say the least about anyone else.

26. Before that we find the entity was in the Atlantean land when there were those periods of the law of the children of one, of the sons of Belial. The entity, with the abilities to bring those things to pass from the application of the spiritual laws in its use for gratifying of material appetites, brought under its control, many of those brought into the material experiences in the opposite sex, or was able to make them of one form or another, shapely, unshapely, those with forms divine, those with such monstrosities in each as to become to the self disturbing at times, but to self that it had need of.

27. This brought to self disaster, in that there are appetites which must be curbed. What will ye do with thyself?

28. Thy abilities are to write and to just be kind to others.

30. (Q) Is there something spiritual in the attraction between the sexes (as I suspect), or would it be to advantage if I repressed the constant quest for a beautiful girl companion? (A) There is something spiritual, which is being, as has been indicated, a co-creator with the divine.

31. (Q) How can I be of definite help to people I have wronged? (A) Just as has been indicated, acknowledge thy wrong and just be kind! Just be patient!

R1. 6/44 Letter: “My reading arrived. It is a great moment for me… I hope you will understand if I say that synonymous with appreciation is a lot of wonderment. For instance, the accusation of a rather sex-crazed past when just the other day, and quite often, I was called an ascetic and condemned for self-abnegation. This experience has been almost sub-normal in physical expressions. However, it may be inherent more than obvious. The other cause of wonder is the extraordinary caution suspected in the information given. If I have abilities as potent as the reading suggests, I don’t understand why I am not told of some spiritual service I may do the world by, possibly utilizing the knowledge gained as an Atlantean for good in the hope of equilibrating the bad. The criticism is not intended to be irreverent. Only a desire to know and to aid the ascension of the self that is in all of us. I hope that my sojourn in this span will be as fruitful to the raising of humanity as yours must.”

R2. 7/10/44 Letter: “It was a privilege to be with all of you for a few hours [1/22/52 Comment by GD: “Mr. [5250] visited A.R.E., and talked with EC, others and me.”], and my desire is to repay in some measure, what was allowed me. The reading tells me my abilities are in writing. This I intend to do as soon as I can visualize how the book may serve the readers best, and the ideal method of presentation… My duty lacks knowledge of a method. Meantime I shall attempt to overcome the suggestions of surroundings that I despise, so that I may become attuned to the voice of One who has promised to speak. My mental prayer, now, is purity of will.”

R3. 8/30/44 Letter: “I have made real progress, the greatest necessity has been an incentive for which I am obligated, to you. I have been born to the consciousness of a truth in the light of which other truths seem but feeble human postulations. It is a fact that forces great beyond our normal ability to imagine are continually operating in the universe, and can be directed by an individual person to and through himself, and used to control things in which lesser forces ordinarily are at work. Testimonies of the grace of God are understandable when it is demonstrated that this power is instantly available for counter-action of all sorts of evil. The condition necessary for results seem to be purification brought about by the purging of egocentric judgments; the stripping of all desires and predeterminations, except the one directly concerned with the sought effect. At this point the desire should be burningly intense, but every bit as controlled and calm. Determination should become expectancy. When the goal is accepted as possible so that fear vanishes, and close on its heels doubt and surprise, the spoken of change of consciousness takes place. From this vantage point, so-called miracles are seen as intrinsic naturalness. Truly, man was meant for a good free life. He only needs to make of himself a channel, and sincerely expect the great, the good, the wonderful to make itself known.”

B2. 12/2/43 Letter: “This is the first day of my return from the South Pacific area, and none too soon to write the letter I have wanted to write for many months. Clairvoyance and its associated studies are my chief interests. However, I could claim little conclusive knowledge along those lines until I was fortunate enough to find Mr. Sugrue’s book in a Red Cross library. The satisfaction it brought me was probably, as much as anything else, the hope of superior vocational advice. At 22 years of age, I am still in a whirl when I try to imagine the work I would be fitted for with my rather illusive mental trends. It would be a great kindness on your part if you could acquaint me by card, of the cost of your guidance. You will no doubt, read anxiety in this brief appeal, but you see, I am a believer in ‘universal thought’ what Emerson called the ‘over-soul’. I have delved a bit in Spinoza, Hegel, Bergson, William James and mostly the New Testament. I have written poetry, but as my own critic, it would be complimentary to call it mediocre.”

B3. 12/18/43 Letter: ”…I have no religious preference, but the tradition of the family favors the Free Methodist Protestant. If I have an ambition, it is to live my life on this earth in a way which it will be most advantageous and pleasant to myself and all my fellowmen and women in the sight of and according to the judgment of God. And, yet, I am not so much concerned with this life, as with obtaining insight and progression relatively. Questions: (1) Have I the ability to write inspiring poetry? (2) Is material enjoyment and laughter a dangerous distraction to spiritual evolution? Will the Association excuse the audacity of the following question. It seems a worth while subject to seek superior advice regarding it. (3) Where shall I look for a girl to marry? Is there a word explanation of the apparent gulf between concept and reality? If this last question infringes on the spiritual reading, disregard it. The reason I ask it, is because the only question that has kept reason and religion from cooperating in higher attainment and the only excuse for philosophy to distrust the Christian, has been this inability to apply the spirit to material creation in explanation…”
