This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Virginia, this 11th day of April, 1934, in accordance with request made by self - Mr. [531], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by David E. Kahn.

Born December 6th, 1893, at 9:00 P. M., in Havana, Cuba. Time of Reading 3:20 to 4:00 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Penna. (Life Reading Suggestion)

1. EC: Yes, we have the entity and those relations with the universe and universal forces, that are latent and apparent in the experience of the entity now known as [531].

2. In analyzing those experiences of the entity in the earth’s sojourns, and those periods when there has been through the mental the application of experiences in sojourns in the earth’s environ - or this solar system, these will be found to be varied.

3. That there have been periods when the entity has not given credence nor credit where credit is due, from the experience of the entity in its present sojourn as well as in others, is evinced by the attitude of the entity in the present as to his relationships with those of spiritual natures. That the attitude, too, is an ASSUMED one - rather than the innate cry for expression of the inner self - is also evinced by the activities respecting same, and the spoken word that does not coordinate nor tally with that the body in its emotion, in its relationships, has experienced and does experience; as will be seen from that which may be given respecting the entity’s activities in the earth. For, he that is false to himself will rarely be otherwise with his fellow man.

4. Then, in giving that which is of a constructive nature in the experience of this entity - either from the astrological or from the purely mental development of the entity in this present experience - it would be well that there be builded for the entity something of the background that may be as a point of contact for the entity, in its seeking, to reason from.

5. (Another paragraph, yes) [GD was wondering, here, if she should make a new paragraph.] The varied experiences in the entity’s sojourns, then, are as the variations in the experience of a body, mind and soul in its dealings with its fellow man as individuals, as groups. And the dealings with the social life of the body. And these are judged by all active minds from the standards to which they as individuals have given credence or allegiance. And while these associations or divisions of the life depend upon or influence one another, they are entirely separate.

6. So are those experiences of a soul, for the body is made up - the physical body is made up - of mind, body-physical and soul. The mind may be founded in spirituality and thus have its concepts and precepts founded in that which is everlasting, or they (the precepts and concepts) may be founded in materiality and thus be only carnal or material in that which may be builded in the experience of any soul or body during an individual sojourn.

7. That these concepts or precepts may vary is seen by that which is drawn as an example for the entity as to that life in the business or commercial world and that life in the home. It is not drawing from something, or on something, that the body is not acquainted with. If the activities of the entity or body in the relationships mentally and materially with his associates in a commercial world are not founded on justice, and an equality of the activities of both parties to any associations, then questions arise. To be sure, the entity has acted in its experience in the present sojourn, in many periods or instances, such that he has questioned himself as well as having others to question his own activities. But unless these have the appearance of being founded, and unless their basic principles are founded, in peace and justice and mercy, the fruits of such an association are NOT well. The same in the home; though the status here may be somewhat varied - unless these are to be founded on principles and standards that are beyond reproach in self, and ideals are set as to what relationships are to be. So in Life. For, Life - as man may find same - is a continuity of experiences from one sojourn, one association, one with another, even as the varied individuals that one may meet in his commercial life. Each contract, each contact, each individual association depends one upon another. Yet are separate. Yet are SO correlated that it depends upon what the body DOES ABOUT SAME as to whether he makes a success or a failure! Not only in the eyes of a commercial world but in the consciousness of self. For, each soul-mind must live with itself, and what that soul-mind, that body, does ABOUT its associations with its fellow man depends upon what the body thinks of itself, considers itself, in relation to the Whole.

8. So does it behoove every soul to so live and so act, in its contacts with its fellow man in its business and commercial life, that it will not be afraid to stand on the corner and watch self pass by - in relationship to its activities with its fellow man.

9. That, too, may be said in such a relationship in the home. So in the inner life; as the home, the relationships there have ever been as a representation of the relationships of the soul to the continuity of life, or Life itself. For, if the ideals and the principles and the basis of Life in its relationship there are not founded on idealism, rather than ideas, on the spiritual relationships rather than material, it too must fail.

10. So, this may be taken then as the basis from which there may be given this body as to what it has done with its experiences in the earth, as its life has been projected into the various manifested places and forms and manners for its own soul development; for, if the body, the soul will but accept same, HIS God - every soul’s God - has not willed that any soul shall be lost. For, each soul is precious in the eyes of the Father, in the eyes of the Maker, in the heart of God, one the same as another. There IS no respect of persons. There is the respect of those that use His blessings, His opportunities, His privileges, granted to the sons of men in the attributes of their minds, bodies, souls, as related to their fellow man.

11. Just as does the individual in his associations with his fellow man build for himself a business relation such that the next individual is glad to deal with him, speaks well of him in his relations with his fellow man, and that his relationships are ever constructive. So is truth; so is the heart of God, as it seeks men - MEN - everywhere - that they, in their relationships with their fellow man, may use the attributes of the spirit of truth. And these be they: Peace, joy, fellowship, love, preferring that there be harmony in just being kind to thy associates day by day, showing fellowship, and worthy of being called “a friend” of those that may be oppressed in any form or manner by the material things of man, or in earth, and showing forth that ye love thy fellow man, that ye honor him who leads thee in that manner in keeping with the fruits or the attributes of the spirit.

12. When those are used that make for envyings or strife, or that any would lord himself over his fellow man, or that the advantage would be taken of those that are weak - either in their mental or their physical bodies, or in their judgments among men, or in their weaknesses for the desire of self-praise or self-laudation, these must bring doubt, fear, consternation in the experience of the mental bodies of those that do such - and disease, disruption, disorders of every nature in the physical bodies of such.

13. In this relationship then we find, as to the attitude of the entity from the sojourns in the earth and from the periods when the entity experienced becoming aware in this material plane of materiality:

14. The entity journeyed from those environs in Jupiter, that had made for experiences that brought the greater visions and capacities within the mental self; not only by training in this material plane but as from the innate mental forces of the body being able to deal with great numbers of individuals in varied stations of experience. And these abilities only offer opportunities for this soul to either use that which is of the spirit, or the earthly forces, as we have just given. For, these are innate and are as the warp of the very BEING of this entity.

15. As to the other sojourns, in and about the earth, we find also Venus being in an adverse position. While this has made for an association that has been pleasing, in what is called the love life or the marital relations in the earth, it has also brought consternations by such associations, that question marks have even been in self’s own experiences in same. And there arises yet in self those things that do not altogether satisfy in such relations. The trouble, brother, has been in thee!

16. In Mars we find that tendency to become secretive in its relationships with individuals, not letting the activities always be in the light; at times bringing for self anger; at times bringing into the experience those relationships and conditions (these are mental) when the soul - through what it does about such feelings, such a desire, IN its relationships with its fellow man - makes for what life in this experience is to bring into the relationships of the individual, or as to what this soul in this experience may make out of its opportunities in life.

17. If these are to satisfy only the aggrandizement of bodily conditions, of those that bring only pleasure to self, those that only satisfy or gratify material positions in power or place or what not, these must eventually bring canker and rust - in either body or mind - that will eat, and EAT, until there is destruction even in the soul itself.

18. Then, as to the appearances in the earth and that the entity has done with itself thus far, these we find are few (that make for an experience, or as development in the present):

19. Before this we find the entity was during those periods when there were the wars in the land of the present sojourn, with those lands from which those peoples had sought to be free.

20. The entity was among those then associated with Howe, that made for some negotiations with the Tories that would have turned much of that land into channels for self’s own interests.

21. In the experience the entity gained and lost, for there was the influencing of many; and such activities bring in the present the ability to deal with groups and individuals, where the product of the different lands, of the various countries, may be associated or correlated for the use of the whole in their relationships one to another.

22. As to whether the entity, the soul, will build for itself in the present, or again turn in such ways and manners as to make for questions in self, is to be governed by what the entity knows in self of that it has set as its ideal.

23. In the name then Juniuels, the entity was of the same peoples, of the same land, of which it is a native in the present.

24. Before that we find the entity was in those periods known as the Egyptian, when there were the coming together of those peoples when there was the re-establishing of the tenets of the priest, and the distribution of those ideas and ideals that dealt not only with the spiritual life and the relationships of individuals to the Creative influences, but that dealt also with the relationships of individuals with individuals.

25. There we find the entity was among those peoples that returned from the captivity with the priest and those that brought with them much of those things that made for the ability to the entity to create relationships with other lands, other peoples, and various environs, various associations.

26. In that period the entity gained; for truth in spirit, truth in the relationships with the Creative Forces, were as much a necessity in the relationships established as were the more material things. Hence, in the name then Ptl-adjhalenpe, did the entity gain through the experience.

27. As to what the entity may do with self in the present:

28. Its abilities, as seen, lie in dealing with his fellow man in their relationships as organizations, or of correlations of cooperative measures that may be had in this, that or the other field of activity; whether it is dealing in those things that come from the fruit of the ground or from the labor of individual hands and minds, or whether in the exchange of that which is peculiar to the various territories or lands that are as necessities - or as things that bring pleasure for individual activities in individual life in other lands.

29. In all of these may the entity deal, in such ways and manners as to bring for self a contentment in his associations, in his experiences.

30. But if these are not founded in truth, or the fruits of the spirit, they will come to naught.

31. In the physical body and its associations, keep the way clear - that there may be the better coordination, the better cooperation, in every portion of the physical organism.

32. Keep the mind clear.

33. We are through for the present.

R1. 4/13/34 Letter:

My dear Mr. [531]:-

On returning from my vacation in the West, I found your correspondence on my desk. From some of it, I do not know whether the first approach to a work of this nature should have been through the Physical or the Life Reading. Personally, I like your attitude and approach to a work of this nature, for I am very sure that the more often than otherwise it sounds too much like hooey for much credence to be put in same. However, my thirty odd years of experience with it have convinced me, personally, almost every day, that there is something to be gained, more often than otherwise, from each experience of a reading. It is not a cure-all; it is not something that will satisfy every individual that gets in touch with it. Why, I cannot tell you. Possibly you can answer it by saying it is the incredulous, or a person has already satisfied himself with something that is ghost-like and gives credence to a thing that doesn’t have any scientific foundation or basis. Yet I am persuaded that almost daily we see just this disputed. Either that, or there are fifteen or more thousand of the biggest fools in the country (and I among them) that it is possible to imagine.

I do not know how you will be impressed, if at all, with the information gotten in your Life Reading. I’m sure at the first glance you may say there is nothing to it, and if you throw it away at that time you may be justified in doing so. But if your experience is like the greater number of those who have even asked, if you will read it some several times, maybe not at one sitting but several times, you will see there is something that may answer many of your questions that have been in your mind or experience from time to time. So, I can only say I assure you my only purpose, my only idea in doing a work of this kind at all, is that I personally have received most wonderful benefits in assistance for my own loved ones where apparently everything else had failed. And I have been assured and reassured by hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of other people that they, too, have had the same sort of experience in the physical, in the mental, in the material and the spiritual affairs of their own lives. I can’t have the experience for others. I do not ask anyone to accept hearsays; I ask them only to be fair and honest with themselves. If it is worth anything, you’ll be able to see it. If it isn’t worth anything, forget it - and know that I haven’t tried to persuade or induce you to believe in something that you don’t want to.

I’ll be most anxious to hear from you. From your letter I know, and more especially from the reading I know that you are worth while; I mean by that, to others. Now, whether you are attempting to turn that into worth whileness to yourself, irrespective of others, that’s your job - it isn’t mine to tell you what to do with your abilities. You’ll have to answer that within your own self, your own conscience and with whatever your conception of the hereafter is. For, Life - I am persuaded - is a continuous thing. It is nothing that we can alter, save as to what we do ABOUT that we know respecting our relationships with our fellow man.

I hope and trust that I may in some way or manner be of a real service.

R2. 4/14/34 Sunday Letter:

My dear friend:

There is a balance due you and here it is. Last eve I read and re-read your “life suggestion” message, while I had read it at my office, but did not get the “grasp” of the whole thing, and up to now, haven’t digested it all, but hope to do so. On the other hand, Saturday noon, after I read your message I went to a business men shower and bathing place, and picked up a copy of “Liberty” for MARCH 10th. That “skepticism” which you call bodily, kept me again in suspense, because the article of some three pages or so, delved into the doings of a medium in Boston, and names several associations similar to yours.

1. If the material being moved me to write you about this, is because I must be guided by the sub-conscious mind, call it, part of the “spiritual being”. Am I right? I don’t understand, or perhaps don’t want to understand, but, I believe in realism and materialism and have respect for spiritualism, but, I must be shown the way. I think this fair. Is there is an atom of spiritual good or guidance then YOU ought to be the one, through mental waves or gathering from the mysteries of earth or the universe, chase from me, any perverse idea or ideal. There must be a cure - what is the cure?

2. Now my friend, you realize, I hope that you do get the drift of my case. I wrote at first, asked you some questions, then upon getting some information as to your association and kind of re-wrote you, while a bit later sent you a letter delving into my health, or perhaps my fear for my health. In all this may be a lesion or a nervous disorder, and something that may or may not affect my mind, but, friend, continuous headaches are the sign of some trouble somewhere, and as you say “Keep the mind clear” in order to do so everything must be in unison, the physical, and the spiritual, the latter controlled by the right influences. What is there wrong and how must go about fixing it up. This clogged pipe, is just like the clogged pipe of a sink, someday it is so clogged that it overflows.

3. I am a very fair man, I think, and while I may seem a positivist, you understand I want LIGHT and I seek facts, the data that I will comprehend and give me to comprehend the ideals and methods in accord with the laws of the universe, that will help me and conduct my emotions. You could sense and send me a message, look into my being, and prove to me so that the veil of skepticism will be replaced by some divine feeling, something unknown to me, which may be represented by health and happiness. That happiness, which is state of mind, must be happiness, meaning no worries. I CAN apply myself and can win but I want you to tell me, say in what refers to my career, what specific item or items should I deal in “as fruit of the ground” or otherwise. Then is my present location the right one, if not why not, and where next?

4. As I said, I haven’t fully digested your reading, but in all, I need more information, and I think you are not going to keep me in suspense, but give me this information. Now then, if it has, as it may seem it has significance (because I write you about it, conducted by my emotions) why is it that being one time under the influence of ether, the ring “gnome” and “gnomastic” things came into my mind, while under the ether, and then re-sounded while awake as the continuity of a motor rotating and rotating and rotating. Such “entering” into unconsciousness must have a meaning, and I am going to have you find it out. Outside of this, in the last two years or so, why is it that I don’t have to look at a clock, but practically every day I look and when I do it is 12 o’clock sharp. I need not hear any sound, nothing, but 12 o’clock rings in my ears and comes to my eyes, before any clock strikes it. Are these calls, sounds, are they the result of having develop the mind unconsciously to do this - there must be a reason, may be some divine message, may be some warning may be some new opportunity, may be a time for something.

5. Outside of this, a thought occurred to me. You gave me a reading that if I have understand right is “astrological” in part, and it must be “spiritual” therefore it must have some foundation, if I am to believe. If I came to the world, on Dec. 6th, 1893 at 9 p.m. isn’t it a fact that the “spark of life” took effect inside of my mother’s part some 4 or 4-1/2 months after pregnancy. My wife, for instance I think will have an offspring, she has been sick now going into 4 months, and the physician tells me that within 4 or 5 months the “baby will kick” this means “life” begins inside of another human being - then what foundation have we to determine the astrological influence if the “moment of life” is unknown?

We don’t know how life begins, nor when the spark strikes, just as we don’t know where death ends and what becomes of that “soul” or that thing which our mind reflects, then I wonder, if I were to go insane (my only fear) how could I, without mind, control that which has forced me to become insane - or in other words, why is it that those that “loose their minds” cannot control it, and bring themselves back to absolute normalcy, IF there has been at any one time, in their life, as their should have been a spark that showed this person the way, and a spark that has been lost or misplaced in later years.

Your conductor, Miss Davis must be in absolute unison mind and body with you and your reflections, and you have to go deep into your sleep and dig, and dig and dig, so that your thoughts, your reflection as inconceivable as they may be to you, will have into my mind the same re-action that there exists between two radios - one sends, and the other receives. IT CAN BE DONE. Therefore proofs, brought to be coupled to my well being, will help me to help you, to help myself while being helpful to my fellowmen, while on earth. And I certainly want to be on earth long and happy, because this I have experienced, I KNOW and I can add to it, all that is good and divine and true, because, that is the law of the creator.

R3. 4/17/34 Letter:

My dear Mr. [531]:-

I have yours of the 14th. You no doubt already have mine of some days ago.

With a great deal of interest I notice all the things you have to say. Still I would like to reiterate I believe you will really get a great deal from a close study of the information already received. I understand very well that one of an analytical mind has some trouble oftentimes in analyzing information of this sort, who desires to see things almost - as it were - presented in a crucible and see a mathmatical ratio set out for him in everything.

I notice what you have to say regarding the article in Liberty of March 10th. I also read the article. Possibly the writer was exactly honest with himself, possibly he was honest with Marjorie. But, as he said, he did not explain anything - as he could not explain anything, except that he thought she was a fake.

For a physical reading of your body it is necessary that we know the exact address at which you will be during the hour of appointment. Consequently, we are making the appointment for Wednesday morning, April 25th, between 10:30 and 11:30 Eastern Standard Time. If this is satisfactory, we will ask that you let us know by that time just where you will be during the hour set. I hope that we may be of a service.

I appreciate your position, your desire to be shown something definite. I also appreciate the abilities you have, which to me bespeak of a psychic nature. This may not be the case at all, but that’s the impression I receive.

I sincerely hope and trust the information you have gotten has proven more and more interesting, as similar information has in the experience of many individuals.

Also I hope that what we may receive during the appointed time on the 25th will be more and more helpful to you.

R4. 4/20/34 Letter to EC:

My dear Mr. Cayce:

Your letter of the 17th. I hope that my requests don’t make an encyclopedia out there, but if you can get the drift of what I want to know, for my future welfare among man, and the guidance of my health so that my span of life will be long, then, I am sure that you and I will be, very very good friends.

I have read your reading and so far have not digested everything, as a matter of fact I need to analyze the meaning of Howe, Tories, Julieuns, and other things, but let this not worry you, I’ll get there. I was over today to the library so that I could dig some more into everything, and merely for my own curiosity and it seems to me, you and I can get together.

Now, unfortunately I don’t find much in English when it comes to that revelation I had of “gnome” that is gnomastic things, and what there is, is not up to the point, but I got a “head full” today in a good Spanish dictionary encyclopedia and there seems to be some indirect correlation with your thoughts and in fact with what you say. I feel that his revelation to me and that hour of twelve, has something for me, and I want to dig on that as it may mean a turning point so that I may know more about myself, better myself in every way, and be able to accomplish success - materially and spiritually - in life, among my fellow men. And I can do it, but you will have to be the “eon” I will say the “conductor”, the in-between to explain to me, what it is, what I am going to be, how I can be, and why I will be, because I shall succeed, have plenty, work hard but have no trouble financially or as to my health. It is bound to come, and it is coming, but somehow, something has held it back, and, nothing that is WRONG shall be in my way to accomplish my purpose in life. Someone has to come to the rescue, and I am going to put the burden in you, because, I think you can do it.

I know that there is some logic to your ideas, and nothing imaginative. I am not heretic, and I like to see and be shown and FEEL at ease, so that I may carry on, and better and better and better. I feel, again that that gnome business was and is some special revelation brought through some impersonal or divine reasoning - which in some other disguise may come to you as any other fellow men. I don’t doubt it, but, by gosh, Cayce I have to be shown, I have to experience, and I have to feel at ease. I feel that I am either finding a way to win a lottery, or that I may have to go to some remote place, or that some one man is going to help me, and that in business, I am going to succeed, but somehow, the “money” doesn’t show up, the opportunities appear to retard, or may be I am doing more than what I can do, but if so - who is going to give me things, yet that doesn’t bother me as much as if I know I am perfect, that I am going to live, that in living I am a material success commercially and socially, and I know, that it can be done, and that the better a man goes the better he still becomes and carries on, and on, and on, and on, but I want any disturbing agent to be off my mind, and to let me go ahead free and well guided, and that I may see the results of such guidance, in a productive way, both a combination of the spiritual and the material results acquired through that spiritual guidance in business and socially.

Now, as to the time, I believe there is hardly any alteration between your time and ours here, may be none, but I am checking up on the Western Union, and I will tell you where I will be alone and concentrating or without concentrating, free of any thoughts, may be reading, but, since that “12” strikes a happy note in my mind, why not let us be in unison by making the hour between say 11:30 and 12:15, so that at the point of twelve, you will be able to strike a happy note and tell me, may be that will be the turning point. Who knows?

Try to get every question I have raised please, also let me know what stone or ring I need - now let us not be confused with amulet - I know there is a ring or stone somewhere, waiting for me, that I should wear, and I am going to find it, a minor tumultuous thought at that in my mind, but, by gosh just as some years ago I made up my mind to be a Consul, I know I can find that stone, a prize, good health, good business surroundings, PLENTY and ease of mind, so that I may follow with you and my fellowmen in all good causes. It can be done, and it will be done, and you, Mr. Cayce, have to dig, and dig, and dig and find out and get the remedy.

Wednesday the 25th is okay with me, not let’s see if you still want your hour or the hour I have suggested, what say?

R6. 4/28/34 Saturday Letter to EC:

My dear friend Cayce:

I was going to send you a telegram to say “very, very, good”

• that is the “reading” is well done, and for that matter your beginning as to the “laying aside his paper” is correct. Then too, the end is correct, and your analysis has been possible due to my being at that time, like, say “away from earth”. For a period, all in front of my eyes (closed) was a violet blue, and the thoughts you had seem to “sound” seem to come to me, but, I could not speak or express them.

You are certainly alright. On the other hand, I am afraid my funds don’t permit me to go to New York and Media [to see Dr. Frank P. Dobbins or Dr. Elisha T. Kirk], though the latter may be possible but I shall write to these doctors and see if they know of a really good man here in Philadelphia properly. Then too, I am proceeding to remove some of my teeth - cause a few months ago the “X Rays” showed some disturbances here.

So much for the physical condition.

Now, then, you will remember, that I asked you as to my proper application into business, and asked for a better analysis, as to what I should do. In order to have everything in unison, that is to have peace of mind I must have assurance of income, and, YOU KNOW - I am a worker, physically and mentally. I am engaged in the export business, selling crackers, biscuits and other food products, but somehow, it seems to be a constant fight to make both ends meet, but at that I never complain.

I used to sell for export and sell at times water heaters, in a company where what seems to be a wealthy and good man, was “gypped” by one of my associates, who doesn’t believe in God or his fellowmen, and I fought for this old man, against all odds, yet I don’t think he seems to appreciate it, and where I had the chance to do something for him and myself as well, he appears to have hesitated, perhaps, because since I have been of a nervous temperament he may have his doubt

• but here’s one man that always received a fair deal from me. He has some money tied up abroad, and I feel, in someway, we both could help each other if he would allow me to work with this money.

However, regardless of that, I am interested to know if I am working in the right direction as to my products now, and what these products may be, and if I should stay in Philadelphia or move down, as it seems, (may [maybe] it is my imagination) that in particularly in rainy days, I get the severe headaches, and they certainly disturb me. Anyhow, you know that to “play” you have to have funds - I work hard and play hard, and I am applying that divine law, and have listened and will listen, but, I feel that if I had peace of mind by having income that would permit me to ease, I wouldn’t ease till I slide - no, I would always hold the breaks or brakes - but everything else materially, spiritual, etc. would be okay.

I think you did a splendid job, and I believe many things can be developed with this “shell of mine” if given a chance - but somehow, the world is such, that it is hard sometime to make the other fellow understand!

Anyhow, friend, you certainly did a good job, and I mean it, and I hope you will not set me aside, but, come back again, so that I may keep on going guided by the fidelity of your excellent work.

Anytime you want me to again sit anyplace just wire me, and I sit down, and help you as you are helping me.

Dear friend Cayce:

Tomorrow, I am going to New York (Friday) and have made an appointment for 10:30 with the doctor, and then I’ll have to follow treatments with a physician here in Phillie, but I wanted to start with this friend and see what happened. It happened too, that prior to your giving me the information I had gone to a regular physician a Dr. Snader here in Phila, and to-day I had my second appointment. According to him, there is nothing organically wrong with me, but, owing to a history in my case, he wants to make a spinal analysis, in other words, they inject a needle in the spine, get this serum and see if there is anything wrong with a person, when the usual intravenous, shows “negative”. [See EC’s letter 5/5/34 under 531-3 Reports advising against the spinal test.] I don’t know much about these spinal matters, and of course, I’ll bring the history of my case, to your friend, and if per chance you happen to have a feeling of telling me, whether I should or should not let anyone, regular physician, get this spine fluid, is something that I certainly would like to have you advice me upon.

Anyhow, I look forward to that contentment to which you refer, and wish to state that yesterday I wired you and was in the same location same, place and certainly concentrated, so that we both can get a solution to this nervous temperament, impatiency, and the need - for that matter - to be healthy and get some financial reward that will ease the path. Cause my friend, I love to work, and you know it, and I don’t let the world fall on me, but plug, and plug; but where health fails, and you have to just be trying to make both ends meet, you can appreciate the handicap.

I guess tomorrow I will be getting a letter from you. In the meantime, will ask that you accept with my compliments something that I am sending under cover, which I am sure you will like it, and keep it.

My Dear Sir:

Some months ago, a casual acquaintance brought me in personal contact with Dave E. Kahn, whom no doubt you know. He claims to be possessed of some “psychic” (did I spell this right) intuition, and, when he spoke to me - as I had been told, that I was also some one psychic - a little chill ran over my body and I wondered. Perhaps this was just an impression brought about my emotions or “What have you” but, while I may seem skeptical, I am “curious” and since curiosity killed the cat - here I am to ascertain if YOU really are possessed of what I may call “supernatural powers” or at least SHOW ME in some way, that all this Dave says about you, will keep me guessing and wondering, and may be a material help in my life career.

In the past when I go among my friends, and have done this and that card trick, act of mental telepathy etc I have also impressed my friends, and my side line is fishing but when I get together devise some magical trick, which places me in the position a good singer or a good pianist will be placed at a gathering, excepting that my entertainments, I guess, makes people think I am a “magician”. I am not. I am a young man, possessed of that divine enthusiasm called ambition, a young man who having done the mistakes we all make in the past, is now endeavoring to forge ahead, battle physical conditions, strengthen mind, and, through some way or another be a success socially and in business. I have read a great deal about “mind and matter” “mental powers” etc. and I am giving you this inkling, because, after all I am a stranger to you, and we don’t know each other at face value, but if you saw me, you will find, 115 to 120 lbs. of abundant energy, a sincere smile, an skeptical eye, but open to stop, look and listen. I am not skeptical, only wish “facts” and proofs when it comes to the mysteries of life.

Sometimes I wonder why we folks like to know what is in store for us - like to visualize the future. That’s a trait that interest men and women, and women go “wild” to have their fortune told. to ascertain what seems mysterious to those that don’t know. I am now dealing with you. I have a business of my own, and I have a wife, have my mother in a foreign land, have a batch of friends throughout the world and a batch of enemies too (we all have). My mother believes in spirits. I have to be shown, and since Houdini did not come back to talk to anyone, nor Conan Doyle, showed, as I understand scientifically that it is probable to talk to the dead, I am curious to be shown that such or a similar situation is possible, a situation by which another mortal on earth can tell me what has transpired in the past, what will transpire in the future, what I should do in life, what I should pursue, and above all, since you and I and everyone must have the material things of life, such as “money” where will and how will I make the money and the REASON WHY.

I can bet most of the people that come to you, want to know about money, eh, no? I like to have enough to live without mental worries, to be healthy, to be successful, to achieve something that will help society, and I just work as much as I can, when I am not in some contrary temperamental mood, and try to do my best, so, if you can really SHOW ME as my friend Dave says, I want you to sit down, calmly, take your time, and put that force to work and get your steno to write your impressions.

Dear Sir:

Your letter of March 15th addressed to my father is before me. He is out of the city for a few days so I take this opportunity of answering your letter and sending you some data which I hope will clarify some of the questions in your mind.

Thank you for your frankness. Your attitude is not an unfamiliar one. As you will observe from the booklet on his life and work Edgar Cayce has been engaged in psychic investigation for over thirty years. Indeed there are those who believe that he has been developing his powers for a much longer period of time than that. The organization called by the rather long title which you have observed in the upper left hand corner has resulted from a growing conviction in the minds of hundreds of persons throughout this country that there is much to be gained in study and application of psychic information. This conviction has been aroused or strengthened because of the experiences with my father’s work. It is the purpose of this organization to draw together individuals like yourself who are “sincere”, “open to stop, look and listen”, and possessed with “abundant energy”. More than these we desire those who are “skeptical” if they are not narrow and filled with prejudices. My father makes not claims. As an organization we do make some very definite statements as to the results of his work.

Several thousand persons have received relief and cures from physical ailments as a result of following the treatments suggested in psychic readings given through Edgar Cayce. B4. 3/25/34 Midnight Letter:

Dear Sir:-

This letter goes to you, after reading your booklet, bulletin and the additional data which you sent to my “incognito” address, as per my typewritten memos, to which funds were annexed. The small balance goes attached together, with the proper application and I hope, indeed, you will show me some real facts that will convince me. Not that I am skeptical, but somewhat guided by something that makes me ask for proofs, due perhaps to my make up or reasoning.

Friend Kahn, a casual acquaintance, told me that I could ask you questions, and if you are possessed of some misterious power, you should be able to concentrate and place your soul or mind in unison with mine.

1st. On Saturday 24th (yesterday) can you tell me AT WHAT TIME that day, was I thinking of you, to such extent that without us knowing each other, and I having looked at your picture (which by the way, at first sight didn’t impress me) endeavored to pass the thought to you, (wherever you were) so that you could answer the question and tell me the TIME?

2nd. Why is it, that for the last few months or so do I look at my watch at precisely 12 o’clock mid-day and I do this wherever I am. In fact it seems a power tells me daily when it is 12 o’clock. What does this manifest and why?

3rd. Perhaps at some time in the past the word “gnome” was impressed in my mind, just as the name “Hormachea” and the picture of of a man I used to know during my school days, seems a sub-conscious wondering about me. As a matter of fact some years ago I took ether for a finger operation, namely a felon. During my sleep under ether, etc. it seems I wandered, as the whirl of a motor into the innermost parts of earth. I could see some man trying to tell me there was something I could learn which would make me a genius or would be a disclosure to me of one of life’s mystery. A few days after I tried to get the noise, the names I could use to decipher such noise and “GNOME” came to me. That prays in my mind. I looked in the dictionary and have tried to ascertain, what I could really learn, whether it was a nervous situation or a dream or someone ringing at my door, bringing to me something on which I should look into, but so far I haven’t succeeded, nor tried hard enough to ascertain what it is all about. Possibly you can enter deeper and deeper and deeper, and deeper and tell me.

4th. What manifestation comes to you as to my past life and physical condition - not before birth but after birth. Tell me something you feel ought to advise me to strengthen my faith in you.

5th. Show me, how I, with the use of my physical being, through the utilization of my mind, can better my health and lengthen my span of life - where is there any fault, where, how and why should I remedy the fault if it exists, and so, that in the process of “finding myself” I may inspire my fellowmen to help me so that I may and WILL get financial support, while being happy and healthy?

6th. What shall I do, what shall be my career and why and where do I start and continue so that my fellowmen may recognize me as a business leader and a success, and I shall not want of the material things to enable me to live decently?

The treatise of “life reading” to which you refer is very nice, and I really do not know how you really work with your cooperators, that is those who help you transcribe your thoughts, while in some state of communication with and by what you seen unable to explain. Indeed I wrote you in my first letter, rather impulsive questions, but I have read a lot along the subject of mind power, have been told that I was somewhat “psychic” but, I haven’t experimented nor tried hard to look into the situation. Naturally curious and skeptical. I’d like to know, I’d like to be convinced, to be shown to meet my method of reasoning.

For instance at the time of writing this letter, the picture of some man, reflected into my mind - if you could see into my being and tell me, “[531], the fellow you saw is this and that, is such and such, you can do this or that with him - is or is not the particular man you seem to think he is as reflected to you years ago”.

If soul is individual, then, you must have, through some unknown method arranged, so that in your circle of life I would come to you, asking for you to look into me and SHOW ME. Here I am.

B5. 3/26/34 [531]‘s letter to HLC:

My dear friend: Prior to the receipt of your very interesting letter of the 22nd, I had received your booklets, and other mimeographed sheets, and read them. Last Saturday we had company at our home, and after the company left, around 12 or so, I stayed downstair and in the quietness of night was able to further digest the data, and wrote you the attached letter.

I am sure that I am one of the hundreds that will like to be shown, but moreover to ask your father, that if he feel he can be a guidance in the live of another individual and help that individual to achieve his desires in life, I would naturally like to see the “facts” and proofs that will lead me to accomplish my purpose, by presenting to me, something that will impress my mind with the real conviction, that HE is right.

If your father is possessed of an unexplainable power that enables him to what other humans cannot do, (or can do, if they were in the same situation he is) all I want is to use or apply such power to my being, and so that I may believe. This does not make me a skeptical fellow, because after all I respect your ideals, his ideals and those of other men, but I believe that anything which cant be explained lacks REASON and calls for research. I am willing to help in that research, when proofs are given to me, as I am ready to join any good cause, where I also benefit.

He will have to make a special effort to make of my case a very special and careful one, very much so, indeed, and I have no doubt that such spiritual studies are good, but I am not leaning on the application of religion and want the more scientific aspect, and proof by “facts” and these can be in any way or manner, that will enable me to say “he is right”.

Frankly I do not know my own make up and few men do, but I have studied many booklets about mind, psychology, etc and when young have seen much of this spiritual things, and have read a lot from the “magician’s” standpoint. Once I had one of the so called astrologer send me his thoughts about my life and he said I was somewhat psychic (is that the way to spell it) and I dont know, because I am not intelligent enough to know, but all my thoughts are inclined to make a success, lacking the physique, which physique, has enable donkeys in America to hold positions that possibly I can hold through the application of mind and a lot of “sweat” in place of chair warming.

I dont know if I am in the wrong road, in the wrong endeavor, not more than I believe possessed of enthusiasm, so be it well founded or not, to enable me to carry on among my fellowmen, and have what other fellows have peace of mind, health, happiness, which require, as I said the material things and surroundings.

I am willing to support your cause, I am willing to look into it, but in order to do so, I must be PREPARED by someone to help me accomplish my ideals in life, then, having time, money, health, I can become part of anything that is for the good of my fellowmen, and to be brutally frank I like your ideals and ideas, but, someone must help me, control my emotions, and place me in position to become the success I want to be in life.

I did not disclose my name, but included the 10.00 and here is 2.00 to complete the first fee, and I will send $5.00 a month as arranged. Naturally, perhaps through curiosity or what not, I want to see that life reading, coming from the power or innerself of your father, at a time, when he is really in position to penetrate or look into the matter from each and every angle, as if he was dealing with the world’s greatest positivist, or with possibly a man with two personalities, battling each other, cause while I believe, the other personality seems to say “dont FEAR - and have him shown you”. And if he does, oh friend, you wouldn’t find a better booster of any cause that’s good and TRUE. I may be impressed at first with anything but a while later, I run right off the track, and want more, and more proof, like the engineers, who make something and keep on improving and improving and improving, and we would never sell it or put in the market unless somebody would take it off their hands!

Now, I know you understand this situation, and will see your father gives me the proof of the pudding, not based merely on the results obtained in the lives of others - as those are mere deductions - but on his power, to enable him to DEVELOP ME along any line of ideals, that will enable him to tell me, about me, in any manner he sees fit, so that I may see LIGHT!
