This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 14th day of July, 1944, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [5349], through husband, Mr. [2940], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by [849] and the book, THERE IS A RIVER.

Born May 7, 1916, in Newark, New Jersey. Time of Reading Set bet. 10:30 to 11:30 A.M. Eastern War Time. …, New York.

1. GC: You will give the relations of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions as I ask them.

2. EC: Yes, some out of the ordinary circumstances surrounding the birth. We have the records here of that entity now known as or called [5349].

3. In giving the interpretations of the records there is much to commend; there is some concerning which we would warn; some which some would condemn. In interpreting these, remember that no influence, either from past experience or from astrological sojourns exceeds the will of the entity.

4. These, then, would be given rather as warnings and suggestions which if applied will influence the activities in such measures and manners as to bring a much more contented, and a much more harmonious, experience for the entity:

5. Astrologically, we find Jupiter, Mercury, Uranus and Saturn as parts of the entity’s consciousness. Then we find these as reflections from these:

6. The entity is very benevolent and open-minded, so much so that the warning would be to learn to be more conservative in self, as well as in the material things. The entity is so open-minded it may easily be taken advantage of at times - haven’t you experienced it?

7. In Uranus we find the extremes, as in Saturn the changes; not merely in environ but in the way of thought or in the manner of giving expression to self.

8. Here, too, the warning would be, be mindful that ye keep the faith which is prompted by the answer of the spirit of truth within. Thus to the entity that question, then, more often, as to what is truth, and what effect the true meaning of the material, the mental and spiritual aspects has upon the everyday life of the entity. Thus, as is seen, the confusion which comes at times to the entity.

9. Abilities in making harmonious experiences are innate, for the extremes oft find reflection in the mental attitudes as to what is truth. Thus the analyzing and the studying of self, and not merely tenets but of habits and of habit-forming experiences in the body. These the entity finds hard to change at times and yet, as has been indicated, is so general at times in its broadness of vision as to miss the real point. For it would appear broad when deep within self it is rather straight-laced; that is, for others, and not so much for self. That is the trouble, or the greater problem to be met in self. Never ask others to do, or demand of others to do, that you do not do yourself. These are the problems of the entity.

10. In abilities we find homemaking, and yet there is ever the search for a career. For the entity likes to be well spoken of. Then speak well of everyone else and everyone will look and find that in you to speak well of. Then, you have to live it, and it is the spirit of truth, peace, harmony, patience, gentleness, kindness. For like begets like, spiritually, mentally, materially. It is the unchangeable law.

11. As to the appearances in the earth, these have been quite varied, as might be indicated from the latent and manifested urges in the experience:

12. Before this we find the entity was in the land of the present nativity, in the eastern portion of Pennsylvania, during the Revolutionary periods. The entity saw hardships because of the activities and yet learned judgments and how to control men, and the entity is capable in the present of making those, whom the entity would draw, kowtow whenever the entity desires. But don’t be selfish. Remember how broadminded ye are for yourself. Be so for others also. Think not more highly of yourself than ye ought, but ye ought to think more highly of yourself than others sometimes appear to do.

13. In the experience the entity gained by the use of its abilities as a helpful force in the lives and experiences of many, suffering physically as well as mentally.

14. Thus a good nurse would the entity be to those it chooses and when it chooses, though showing indifference when there’s not an appeal to some emotions of the entity.

15. The name then was Ellen Ballentine.

16. Before that we find the entity was in the North African land near what is now known as Alexandria. The entity was in excellent groups of students of nature, students of lore as of old, becoming acquainted with individuals who represented the empire that was bringing that portion of the land under submission.

17. The entity then, as Asylaen, brought those who were in authority to a more perfect understanding of her own peoples. And thus in the present the entity is very much of a diplomat to obtain that which it desires. Be sure the desires are in keeping ever with Creative Forces and for bettered conditions spiritually, mentally and materially.

18. Before that we find the entity was in the Egyptian land when there were the preparations of individuals for activities in other lands. The entity passed through the testing periods in those activities in the Temple Beautiful. The entity was prepared for a companion to one of those acting in the capacity of emissaries and teachers and leaders.

19. And thus home building, needs of home economics, the needs of not expending too much of self; not becoming lazy or dilatory, but of body, of mind and of material self also reserve, preserve and you will be happier for same.

20. In the experience the entity gained and lost, and gained. In the application of this in the present, as indicated, let it become the saving grace by the applying of self.

21. As to the abilities, we find that in home building and the directing of those who may work toward giving help to others may the entity complement such individuals, in its abilities to visualize or to give expression to activities.

22. Then, let that which would ever be the helping force be prompted from the spiritual force within.

24. (Q) What is the greatest obstacle I must strive to overcome? (A) Read what has been given.

25. (Q) Is the conception of a child, or children, necessary to my happiness? (A) Not necessary but read what has been given as to the better activities. Would ye be so selfish as to prevent a soul giving expression, because of thy desire not to be bound by conventionality?

26. (Q) Is it indicated that I will ever be handicapped by a serious illness? (A) Depends much upon self. For as ye sow, so ye reap.

27. (Q) What have been my relationships in past lives with my husband, [2940]? (A) Particularly in the Egyptian and as to how the entity may be a complement to the companion in his creative work. [Teaching, writing, lecturing].

28. (Q) Any other advice? (A) Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman not ashamed, rightly dividing the words of truth and keeping self unspotted from the world.

R2. 7/25/74 [5349]‘s letter to HLC: “It has taken a very long time to arrive at this decision - to write to you. Tom Sugrue, who was a close friend to my husband, [2940], - spoke of you in his letters, so in a sense we are related.

“Your Dad, in his ‘reading’ mentioned that my experiences were varied, however, in summation Mr. Cayce said, ‘As to the abilities, we find that in home building and the directing of those who may work toward giving help to others may the entity complement such individuals, in its abilities to visualize or to give expression to activities.’

“No doubt my life reading is on file ([257] had our copies and for some reason didn’t return them).

“If this letter reaches you, perhaps you will give me some ‘direction’, that I can use for a starter. I believe I can be helpful in some area of your important ‘Cause’, and I know it would be helpful to me.

“Will be happy to answer any questions. Realize and appreciate how very busy you are…” [5349]

R3. 7/29/74 GDT to HLC: Her case number is [5349]; his is [2940]. I kept above original for her folder, since this is the first letter we have had from either of them since 1944. Send me a copy of your reply.

R4. 8/27/74 HLC’s letter to [5349]: “As the old saying goes, any friend of Tom Sugrue’s is a friend of mine…

“I have just finished reading a copy of your reading and find some interesting questions. For instance, how accurate was he now that you can look back over the number of years? What does he mean by being too open minded and being taken advantage of because of this openness and open mindedness? Also, can you understand what he said about the effect of truth in relationship to daily life and the confusion that arises at times in applying it to daily life? He indicated too that it was very hard for you to change once you had set habit patterns and moving in certain directions. He raised another serious and interesting question, that you were rather straightlaced where others were concerned, but did not require as much for yourself. Is this true? He urged you never to require of others what you would not require of yourself. This could apply in all sorts of ways and frequently fits into a marriage pattern, demands of a marriage partner, or demands on children, or in relationship to ethics, business ethics, etc. This will be interesting as to just how accurate Edgar Cayce was in picking up specific weaknesses and specific problems that you might be meeting.

“It is most interesting, I think, that he indicated that in Pennsylvania you worked with those who were suffering physically and mentally…

“It is interesting too, that Dad mentioned in the readings that you were something of a diplomat when it came to obtaining what you wanted or desired. Do you feel that this has been true?

“I will look forward to going over the readings with you. Since you quoted a portion of it in your letter, I assume that you have a copy of it with you there. In any event, I will look forward to meeting and talking with you the next time I am there.”

R5. 9/5/74 [5349]‘s reply to HLC: “Delighted with your ‘art work’ and warm welcome - (thanks to Tom). After reading past the first sentence, the knitty-gritty got some ‘off the cuff’ responses from me - such as:

“How objective can a guy be about his personal hang-ups?

“Mr. HLC, you ask some in-depth questions. Holy Smoke - what a challenge - face yourself and die - again.

“I asked for some ‘rain’ but I ain’t no Noah.

“Will try to shed some light on your questions. Tho’ I know I have a talent for in-depth evaluation, this is the first time I’ve actually done anything like this on paper. It’s a ‘touchy’ subject - and a little tricky in reconstructing to isolate specific questions and still be related to the whole. (There is a need of a strong program to learn to organize my thoughts.)

“Mr. Cayce was over 90% correct - the rest - open to question. Subject - Openness and Open-minded: Empathy, generous to a fault - very GULLIBLE when a strong personal level. Took on too many of the other guy’s responsibilities and my emotional commitment unnecessarily long. Same idiocy over and over and over again. Made it very easy for others to take advantage - and then wondered after long periods of time, why they had. Mis-directed faith in things leveling off. It would seem it was a strong thread in my ‘undoing’ in my life, adding heavily to loneliness, confusion, and fatigue

• leaning more and more on the ‘intangibles’ for response. Apparently, to have identity, I had to be the ‘good one’. Results: just the opposite - lost ‘identity’ (that’s where hell has to be!)

“Subject - Unusual Surroundings - (Dand’s opener - check reading) Born into a house divided against itself - high voltage conflict, never ceasing resentments etc. Impossible situation. Perhaps that is why Mr. Cayce underplayed it. What could you say? The dreadful ‘pull’ is finally whimpering away - but not without more confusion to come. A lion’s den would be quicker and less formidable. (Believe the ‘unseen’ was protecting me very strongly then) and, I was graced with a love and talent for music.

“It has been laughingly said that, ‘when all else fails - read the directions!’ - which is backwards - it should be, ‘read the instructions,’ and if that doesn’t work, call in a teacher who can teach at your level of comprehension. Which brings to mind some of the complications of the phrasing in the ‘readings’ - which might have the dimensional purpose (for some) to evolve to the point wherein as to some, it would not be necessary for the words to meet the eye - but the ‘eye’ to meet the words - Oh Boy - Hah.

“For endless years, I seemed to be filling a bucket with a hole in it. It never occurred to me that the hole was in my head! I was using ‘controlled’ strength to assume more and more responsibilities to what should be, at best, a temporary aid - not a way of life. While I might get ‘A’ for effort, in the LARGER SENSE, all I was doing was changing the imbalance - not improving it. (My off-beat humor in dark, dark moments, comes to my rescue - and one day recently, I heard myself say, ‘good grief, gal, you didn’t have to crucify yourself to prove you weren’t Christ.’)

“A good part of my life reads like a fifth-rate melodrama. Which brings me to my life with [2940] (at least some aspects of it) - the title to which has to be, ‘Immaculate Deception.’

“I had no idea that I was to receive a ‘reading’. The questions for the reading were asked by [2940]. At the time I wondered why, with all the sick and needing, a reading should be given to me. (If you have it, check [2940]‘s reading - it might throw some light on something for you - and if possible, I’d appreciate a copy.) Subject on having children: Since [2940] was adamant on NOT having children - your Dad’s reply seemed at the time ‘unfair’ to me.

“Subject: Diplomat in obtaining desires: No questions of this - strong insight perceptive - great sensitivity to other’s sensitivities. As for the actual obtaining of the desires - re-check the hole in my head.

“The last act hasn’t unfolded as yet - feel it will be the determinate.

“These questions you ask - could easily be a life’s study. There is no end to where it leads generally and/or specifically. After many hours and too many slips of paper and trying not to get hung-up on ‘remembrance sensitivities’ I believe it would be better to stop soon. I need time to do my chores. And as your Dad said, I can get hung up on habits. I won’t get turned off - simply because my mind has been doing this kind of ‘hashing’ for years. I definitely should be in ‘research work’ of some kind.

“Just learning to type - and you might have guessed I ain’t no expert. Write some of my thoughts on slips of paper - in long hand - and then can’t read them.

“I sense some kind of personal question - in the subject of not requiring of others what you wouldn’t require of yourself. What do YOU want it to relate to? In a few minutes I wrote quite a bit on that subject - but it has to be sorted out and tho’ don’t like quitting at this point I have a decision to make as to whether I will work 6 nights a week (playing music) - also - I’ve been up to my neck in listening to some problems and trying to explain to each of three people involved, something about values, etc. and trying to help them to understand themselves. It’s as they say - ‘weird’ situations.

“The point of writing this much was simply because I know your time is limited…

“Hope this helps and you can make some sense of it.” [5349]
