GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [5379].
-
Now, as we find, there are disturbances in the developments of this body. In some time back there was an injury to the end of the spine so that the coccyx end of the spine is turned in to the side and this causes the conditions which develop in the right side, especially in the area of the umbilical and lacteal duct, and these at certain periods will increase unless corrected because the spasmodic reaction is to the medulla oblongata, the larger nerve center in the base of the brain, which causes contractions and spasmodic reactions.
-
As we find, we would first begin and remove the lesions which have been and are indicated existent in the lacteal duct area. We would have these corrections for the spine made osteopathically by such as Ober [Vincent H. Ober, D.O.].
-
Then use Castor Oil Packs over the gall duct or the right side. Put them on about three thicknesses of flannel, then apply electric pad or heavy salt heated and then apply over the oil; this should be applied directly to the body. Sponge off the body, after taking this off, with a weak soda solution.
-
When there are the attacks, until there are the corrections made, hold a cold cloth back of the head along the neck and we will find it will be much easier for the body.
-
But these adjustments and packs should correct these conditions.
-
Do not take quantities of sweets at any time. Do take the leafy vegetables as portions of the diet. Not too much fats. Never any hog meat, save breakfast bacon. Sweets should consist of honey or corn syrup, these taken in moderation, only in fall of the year or winter.
-
Do these and we should bring corrections for this body.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) How long should the Castor Oil Pack be kept up and how often? (A) Keep up the Packs until the corrections and the lesions in the area are broken up. These should be taken by periods, three days at a time, an hour each day. Follow same with two teaspoonfuls of Olive Oil. We wish to clear the alimentary canal and keep it clear, and then do have those corrections made. Leave off these packs after three days for two weeks and then give them again.
Have at least two series of the corrections made about ten treatments in each series, with two weeks between the two periods of treatments. Use about twice a week, and the packs three days each week, skip a week, then three days again.
-
(Q) Should I continue to hold her when she has these spells, until corrections can be made? (A) As has been indicated, let it rest but keep the feet high and put cold water or ice water back of the neck on cloth.
-
(Q) Did this condition come from injury at birth or just what caused it? (A) She was set down too hard.
-
(Q) Any advice to the parents in aiding the child? (A) Don’t be impatient. Do follow through. You have a great soul here.
-
We are through with this reading.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 8/8/44 Verbal report from mother that [5379] had not had an attack since starting the Packs.
R2. 10/10/47 Report requested by GD from parents and Dr. Vincent Ober.
R3. 10/17/47 Dr. Ober’s report: “There were osteopathic lesions in spine as mentioned in the reading. The condition (1) epilepsy was controlled only by phenobarbital and (2) secondary anemia. The patient was under my care from 8/3/44 to 4/13/45. On the final visit the mother reported that the child had slept one night only in a two weeks period. Diagnosis: Epilepsy, Secondary Anemia.”
R4. 12/49 [2051]‘s verbal report to GD: “The mother of [5379] says she discontinued the treatments because they were so expensive and the Packs so messy, but she thinks the child was helped for a while.”
R5. GD’s note: Directions for preparing Castor Oil Packs:
Dip 3 to 4 thicknesses of heavy flannel [that is, wool flannel] in hot Castor Oil (wringing out lightly) and apply over area indicated, as hot as can be applied - directly to the body (that is, against the skin). When each Pack cools, then re-dip in the hot oil. Keep applying, or keep Packs hot (by the use of an electric pad, hot water bottle, etc.), for two or three hours at each treatment (or vary according to suggestions for your individual case). A heavy towel or oil covering should be used over the Pack to prevent soiling sheets, etc.
R6. 6/6/63 Death notice of her father listed [5379] (under her married name) as a survivor.
R7. 1/70 See E.C.F. publication by Dr. William A. McGarey, entitled EDGAR CAYCE AND THE PALMA CHRISTI, giving reports on use of the Castor Oil Packs and splendid results in epilepsy and many other ailments.
R8. 9/21/72 She and her new husband visited A.R.E. and secured a copy of her reading, talked with Robert O. Clapp in re Epilepsy Circulating File for her M.D., Dr. James P. Charlton, who has known [5379] all her life and is willing to try the Maypop Bitters, along with the other therapy, gradually letting up on the standard drugs if possible, to see if she will respond to the Edgar Cayce therapy now being used for epileptics by Dr. Wm. A. McGarey at the A.R.E. Clinic in Phoenix, AZ.
R9. 8/8/74 Dr. Charlton’s report:

Thank you for the loan of this material. Although I do not wish to be a participating physician due to my already overextended practice, I do not discourage my patients from availing themselves of your resources. [signed] J. Charlton
R10. 9/11/74 GD’s note: Apparently Dr. Charlton did not follow for [5379] the regime for epilepsy as summarized by Dr. W. N. Pahnke in his 7/60 Study of 96 Cases of Epilepsy in the Edgar Cayce readings, which material, mentioned above, was sent him on loan from the Circulating Files.
Background
Background
B1. 7/25/44 Verbal report by parents to GD when they came for the reading: Born at 7 months and weighed about 3! pounds. Raised on buttermilk. Doctors didn’t hold any hope for her. When she was about 4 or 5 years old she would have shaking spells that would come on in the morning. Attended by Dr. […] from birth. He said she would outgrow this condition. August 1943 she was found unconscious in bed from a spell - convulsion. Dr. […] at …, Virginia didn’t know just what to do. Talked to Dr. […], brain specialist and took her to Richmond to Dr. […], also brain specialist, who found nothing wrong with her brain. They tapped her spine and still found nothing harmful. After this she had headaches for about two weeks - doctors told the mother this would wear off in a couple of weeks. When she has these spells she gets tickled and nearly goes into hysteria… Took her to Dr. […] in Norfolk who said he could cure her - that something was wrong in her spine - upper part - said that she had been injured when she was born. Didn’t follow through with this suggestion from him [a chiropractor]. She went to school until September 1943. Couldn’t attend after this, due to spells. Has had about 10 bad spells when she would lose consciousness. Falls out when there is any excitement, or when she touches anything hot, or when a door slams. Has these spells several times a day. Getting constantly worse.
