This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 1st day of April, 1941, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [538], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

Time of Reading 4:00 to 4:15 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Ky.

1. HLC: You will give the physical condition of this body at the present time, with suggestions for further corrective measures; answering the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [538]; this we have had before.

3. As we find, there is some improvement in the general conditions - and in the more specific disturbance with the eye.

4. The present applications are well. However, the day before the treatments are to be given, we would use the Violet Ray about two to three minutes; not too strong, but applied first in the 3rd, 2nd and 1st dorsal center, then slowly up the left side of the spine to the base of the brain; then turn across to the right side and up, behind the ear, and over to the right side of the face. Do not use it too long, nor too strong; about a minute and a half to three minutes for the whole application, - not more than half a minute to the side of the face - or from the neck or base of brain to the right side.

5. At first this will produce some tendencies towards inflammation, yet - with the treatments being applied for clearing the circulation through the optic itself - it will aid in restoring a more healthful condition there.

6. Two or three of such treatments should be sufficient, see?

7. Do that.

8. Ready for questions.

9. (Q) Any suggestions regarding diet, especially at this time? (A) All of those vegetables that tend to clear or purify the circulation; such as celery, lettuce, carrots, radishes and the like, as a part of the diet each day. The body-building forces are preferable. As indicated, beef, fish, lamb - all of these that the body will assimilate are well, or even the juices from these - though not much of the bulk or flesh itself need be swallowed.

10. (Q) Any other suggestions for the body? (A) These we would do.

Be mindful of the better eliminations. Keep these regular.

R1. 4/11/41 Husband’s letter: “[538] rushed home from Ky. before she was through with her treatments. When she heard that our youngest son [487] was to be inducted into the army on the 12th she came at once. He is still her baby (mine too, I guess). So I am afraid her right eye is gone for good. I hope the other one doesn’t become affected.”

R3. 9/2/41 “[538] is looking much better. She has known for years there was the prospect of losing that right eye, but that which is inevitable - what can one do about it?”

R4. 10/11/41 “Her eye is much better, so far as giving trouble - no vision to be sure - possibly will never be again, but to keep the left eye from becoming infected has been a job. I think that is all okay now.”

R5. 12/17/41 Miss [288]‘s letter: “[538] has a dreadful cold just at present - some better possibly today, but it is the worry of the thing that is getting her just now. The idea of her boy, or boys, being sent to fight in a foreign country - well, she hardly stands up under it, but she is pretty brave, and says that ‘the work’ [of EC] helps, for all who give thanks to God.”

R8. 8/29/42 Husband’s letter: “I hope to send [538] home to Ky. for a few weeks - next Wed., I think. She needs a rest.”

R9. 2/17/43 She used the compound recommended in 538-55 to overcome another flare-up of gastritis - sick stomach, vomiting.

R10. 2/18/43 Husband’s letter: “[538] is having quite a bit of trouble with her eye. Been in bed for two days. Can’t get any sleep.”

R11. 2/20/43 “She is suffering a great deal with her eye - am very fearful of an operation being necessary, but hope we may be able to avert it.”

R12. 3/22/43 “[538] is better since she had two teeth out, but has others that will have to come out. She is dreading that.”

R13. 8/23/43 “[538] is pretty well.”

R14. 4/27/44 “[538] is pretty thin and complains of being tired a great deal, but she does a lot of work.”

R15. 1/3/45 Her husband died after an illness of 3-4 months during which she nursed him constantly. [See subsequent Life Rdg., Reports under 538-9.]

R16. 3/15/45 Miss [288]‘s letter [to Mrs. [538]‘s sons in the Army]: “She is going to the hospital tomorrow to have X-Rays made of her stomach. About a week after she got home from her husband’s funeral this trouble became apparent. One day she was walking into a store and walked sideways into the glass window, not being able to balance herself. She thought at the time it was because of being blind in the right eye. However, we now can see that it was perhaps because of the hardening liver condition, since we have been told in the readings that the liver and kidneys are the positive and negative poles in the body [See 4909-1, etc.].

“She thought at first that the swelling or hard lump on her right side, under her rib, was an impaction in the caecum area, so she started using the Castor Oil Packs and taking Olive Oil internally. It seemed to get better at first. She kept up the Packs religiously and is still using them - it’s about two months now.

“On Feb. 15th she went to Dr. M. L. Richardson who, on examining her, advised that she go to her regular M.D. She went then to Dr. Waller L. Taylor [3/10/45, driving her own car to see him] who diagnosed the condition as cancer of the liver.

“Since March 1st she has steadily gotten worse, and weaker each day, because she hasn’t been able to keep anything much on her stomach. The whole abdominal area is as hard as a board, all over, and at times we could feel hard knots in places, but now the entire area feels like it is encased with a thick, hard substance. Now she is worried about the X-Rays, thinking she may have to have an operation, etc. (not having been told the true condition or the probability) but Dr. Taylor thinks there is nothing to be done. At the most he thinks she won’t last three months, and if she doesn’t gain any strength and keeps losing ground as she has done in the last three weeks she won’t last that long.

“I feel like I’m going through a nightmare just writing this. Right after she came back from the funeral she told me that she felt like, since [294]‘s passing, that one of her vital organs had been bodily removed; that she felt that way PHYSICALLY, it had nothing to do with her mind.

“I must admit that mentally she has been the bravest thing I ever saw - she has made herself take an interest in others and not mope or feel sorry for herself. It is purely a physical condition which has perhaps been slowly developing until lately and the strain she has been under during the last few months has weakened her so that she couldn’t throw it off.

“I’m sure that her Aunt [760] will want to come at once. [538] wrote her and [852] this morning, I believe, suggesting that she’d like one of them to come if they could, and telling them about the X-Rays, but of course she didn’t have the news to give them that I have here. We have persuaded her to stay in bed to gain strength (presumably) and, of course, will not tell her what the doctor says. I’ll write again tomorrow.”

R17. 3/16/45 Miss [288]‘s letter: “[538]‘s whole abdomen is swollen until she looks like a person in the last stage of pregnancy. She is not in any pain but very uncomfortable, as the skin is so tight it feels like it will burst, and there is a pressure on the diaphragm. This tremendous swelling has taken place in the last two weeks - that’s why it appears so ominous. I’ll write again tomorrow. Please know she’ll get all the care and attention it is possible for her to have. Just remember that I love her, too. Her greatest concern, of course, is that this is worrying ‘her boys’. Love and tears for you, [288].”

“P.S. If we could just get hold of some Concord grapes for poultices, I feel like they might help, but it is not the season for them. We keep alternating the Castor Oil Packs and Glyco-Thymoline Packs. She had been using the Castor Oil right along. Maybe she would have been worse without it, I don’t know. Her skin is getting rather yellow - Dr. Taylor says that is the natural effect.

“It grieves me to write you like this but I know you’d rather have the details. I keep trying to think what I would like to know if I couldn’t be on hand. It is indeed a cruel thing for you, [341], especially; you will truly be a wonderful soul if you can live through this experience without bitterness. We keep hoping that you’ll be flying home any day and calling up from N.Y. to say you’re on the way. [Dr. T. and Red Cross had applied for his release.]

“[538] is so patient, so little trouble; such a difference from [294]‘s illness - he wanted somebody doing something all the time, and he had it, from beginning to end. [1770] hovers over her like a hen with one chicken, fixing and bringing her a bite of this or that she feels she might be able to eat. Dr. Taylor said give her something often rather than much at the time; no special diet except no fats or greases of any kind. She seems to keep down canned tomatoes better than anything else and has a sort of craving for them. We’re giving her beef juice regularly (Mr. Brothers got it for us - quite a job here nowadays). Canned tomatoes are also hard to get on account of high ration point value, but fortunately [[2111] and husband] raised a lot of tomatoes last summer and Mama canned them. We don’t have to worry on that score, though I’m sure we could also get points if we needed them. Her room is filled with beautiful spring flowers. I told her I never knew anyone to have so many flowers with so few people knowing about her illness; it has come on so quickly.

“I’ve never seen anything like her determination and will power. Evidently she just kept on going for months when an ordinary person would have gone to bed. She hasn’t been well for several years, you know, and has continued to doctor according to the readings. I feel that the strong emotional reaction of [294]‘s death and trying to hold on to herself has caused the condition to settle in the liver, or rather the spleen which registers all emotions, or is affected greatly by them.

“[1747] comes over every afternoon and gives her a rubdown on the spine to rest and relax her, using olive oil and myrrh.”

R18. 3/19/45 Miss [288]‘s letter: “When going out to the car with Dr. Taylor yesterday he said, ‘[288], it’s no use - it’s cancer of the liver [carcinoma, periportal? giant cell sarcoma?] - she won’t last six weeks - she’ll just get weaker and weaker - the liver keeps growing by leaps and bounds. Yes, it’s bad - too bad - very sad.’

“I don’t think he has any feeling at all about the x-ray except as something to divert her mind, to keep stalling.

“I just can’t realize it. Just think, last Monday [3/12/45] she and [1770] went to the hospital to see [1505]. [1770] drove, because she felt it was too much of an exertion on [538], but otherwise she walked and did everything [1770] did.

“I don’t know what we’d do without [1770]. I’m sleeping in the sun room, with the door open, so I can hear every move [538] makes. She gets so nauseated and can’t retain her food

• she tries so hard to keep down the medicine Dr. Taylor is giving her.”

R19. 3/22/45 Miss [288]‘s letter: “Aunt [760] arrived yesterday afternoon. Dr. Taylor has arranged for an ambulance to take [538] to the hospital, since it will keep her from using her own strength and Aunt [760] can sit in the ambulance with her. She just expects to be there a couple of days - he says she could do it in one day except that she needs to rest between times, etc. She still isn’t suffering - she just gets weaker and weaker. Aunt [760] was so shocked to see the change in her - and it has all taken place so quickly, in the last ten days, really. She actually only took to her bed last Wed., eleven days ago [3/11/45]. It seems strange to think that twelve days ago [3/10/45] she drove her own car and went to see Dr. Taylor in his office.

“She doesn’t realize at all that the doctor considers it fatal. She keeps telling me things to do, such as being sure to renew her driver’s license on time, etc. Yesterday she said, ‘I’ll be so glad to get the x-rays made, see what it is and get started on the treatment to give me some strength so I can get up - I just feel so tired.’ Aunt [760]‘s coming has made her feel much better - she wanted her to come all the time but wouldn’t ask her. Aunt [760] says, ‘You know I would have come all along if I had just known you were in this fix.’ Every now and then one of us runs up on another one of us off in a corner crying. Aunt [760] says, of course, the doctor can be wrong - who knows better than she about that? She thought at once of the grape poultices, just like I did, but we can’t get any grapes.”

R20. 3/24/45 Miss [288]‘s letter: “[538] got back from the hospital this morning. It was a terrible ordeal. She had to swallow a glass full of stuff before taking the x-rays, and for days she had only taken sips of juices every hour or so because of the nausea. I just phoned Dr. Taylor and he says the x-rays look very bad, that he doesn’t think she’ll last three weeks. Poor Aunt [760] - she is so broken up over it, so tired and worn out. In fact, we all are.

“[1770] and I drove in to the hospital yesterday afternoon to take her letters from you and [487]. I had to read them to her, as she was just too tired to sit up and put on her glasses. While I was reading I asked her once if she was asleep, she was so still and didn’t open her eyes. She told me Thursday morning before leaving for the hospital, ‘[288], you’ll just have to write the boys - I’m too tired.’ I felt so awful after seeing her that I wired [487] and [2635] last night, advising him to come immediately if possible. He is on two weeks maneuvers in Santa Maria, but he had written that [2635] could get in touch with him by army radio.

“[480] phoned today from Mich. and said, ‘Don’t let them start on those agonizing treatments like Mother [601] had which will only make her linger and suffer.’ The way it is now, she just gets weaker and weaker and doesn’t want to be bothered - doesn’t even want Aunt [760] to rub her. Wish I could say something to help, but it wouldn’t.”

R21. 3/29/45 Son [487]‘s letter: “She is extremely weak and looks like the pictures you see of starved war prisoners. She can’t keep anything on her stomach, which is swollen terribly. She isn’t in too much pain except for feeling ‘sick all over’ and her mind is clear; however, it is an effort for her to speak. Her thoughts are still for somebody else; she’s afraid she is worrying us. It is awfully hard to have to sit by and watch her waste away, not able to help her in any way.”

R22. 3/30/45 All night she kept spitting lumps of blood.

R23. 4/1/45 She died, Sunday, Easter morning, at seven o’clock. Dr. Taylor said he had never seen a case develop and terminate with death so quickly. He put “Carcinoma” on the death certificate as the cause of her death.
