This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 4th day of April, 1929, in accordance with request made by self - Mrs. [5429].
[Edgar Cayce; Mrs. Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mr. L. B. Cayce.]
Time of Reading 5:00 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Alabama. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: We have the body here, Mrs. [5429]. Now we find there are those conditions as produce distresses with the physical forces of the body. These are of long standing. Hence there may be - and there have been - complications as arise from these conditions. The greater distress comes from the poor eliminations as have long existed with the system, and the changes - as have been wrought in the system from the attempt to create a more stabilized, or a more excess of elimination in first one direction then another, have brought the greater distresses in the form of the complications.
-
There has long existed in system subluxations - that have produced improper incentives. This [is] the main or first cause of the distress as produced in functioning of organs, as related to a coordinated elimination. This, then, [is] the cause at the present time of the high state of nerve exhaustion that comes from undue activity - whether of the mental or the physical nature, and unless SOME changes ARE made must eventually break down under the strain as is constantly being produced.
-
Now, because there are these complications and because so many varied conditions and portions of the system are involved IN the disturbance, it is not to be considered that the body is helpless - nor hopeless; for a correction of conditions to where a near NORMAL condition may nearly exist may be brought about. The changes as are of nature taking place in the system also has its part in the condition, yet the early change is produced from the suppressions as have existed through the subluxations of segments, and this misdirected, and the energy then becoming a taxation, and a tired, nervous, depleted system the result. Yet the body in some conditions has much vitality, especially as regarding will’s application in self, and the body has for many, many moons forced self to go about its daily tasks whether that of social, or of business relations, and this has in part aided the system - yet this, too, without recuperative forces, must eventually give out.
-
Now to meet the needs of the conditions for this body, Mrs. [5429] we are speaking of, there must first be the determination in self that the body will consistently and persistently follow out those lines of the corrective influences for the physical conditions of the body.
-
First, as soon as possible, the body should completely rest - as near as is possible to do so, REST! only taking sufficient exercise to produce the nominal digestion of the foods taken in system. The BETTER conditions and surroundings would be sand, salt, and sea air, and plenty of sunshine - remaining in and on the sands as much as would be possible to do without bringing about too much irritation to the exposed portions (and there should be as much of the body exposed to the air as there could well be).
-
In this rest will come renewed energy, yet there will be - after such ten days to two weeks of REST - then the real WORK to perform.
-
The diet during the rest should consist principally of, for morning meals - fruit, eggs, milk. For lunch, those almost wholly of green vegetables - or of FRESH vegetables little cooked. Evenings, the JUICES of meats but not meats, and vegetables that are of a well BALANCED nature for blood and nerve energy. Plenty of carrots, beets, lettuce, celery, particularly. These should be the diet, and should be kept much the same throughout the correcting of the conditions.
-
After the rest, begin with those of corrections - osteopathically - of those subluxations and sublimations as exist in the coccyx and the lower dorsal and lumbar region, with sufficient relaxation of the upper dorsal and cervical to create an equilibrium in the system.
-
The body may then begin LIGHT exercise - housework, or social conditions.
-
Then, after this has been taken for at least twelve to fifteen treatments - each taken each day - these may be put FARTHER apart and taken twice to three times each week, and taking (after the twelfth adjustment - and the body relaxed thoroughly with wet heat before adjustments are made, especially in lumbar and sacral and coccyx region) those of these properties:
-
To 4 ounces of simple syrup add:
Tincture Valerian…1 ounce, Elixir Calisaya…1 ounce, Essence of Celery…1/2 ounce, 10% Solution Bromide of Potassium…20 drops, 10% Solution Iodide of Potassium…1/2 ounce, Tincture Capsici…2 minims.
-
Shake solution together before each dose is taken, taking half a teaspoonful in water or plain - half an hour AFTER each meal, and EAT the meals! Still continuing as much exercise in the open as possible.
-
After sixty to ninety days we should find the nearer normal condition for this body. Ready for questions.
-
(Q) To what extent the state of my teeth and gums is affecting my health? (A) The state of teeth and gums rather the result of conditions in system, than producing same. These add, naturally, to the distresses through the accumulation of poisons in system from this condition. Use that of Ipsab, and change the conditions in SPECIFIC manner with those conditions in mouth - using that (Ipsab) at least twice each week, thoroughly massaging gums with same, with dipping the finger in solution and rubbing gums - outside and inside; correcting local conditions where teeth show abscesses forming. These may be best determined by the X Ray - though we see the conditions here.
-
(Q) What causes the external vaginal irritation and suggest a remedy? (A) Produced by nerve condition, especially in lumbar and sacral region. The correction of these conditions will materially aid the body in this direction, though an antiseptic may be used occasionally - as douches, for this irritation. Those of small amounts of Glyco-Thymoline, or of any vaginal douche that is ALKALIN in its reaction; not having solution too strong - using this as given, we would use teaspoonful to half a gallon of warm or lukewarm water.
-
(Q) Why do I suffer with swimming in the head at intervals? (A) With the condition described is there much wonder that there’s suffering? with the depletion as existent in the whole system? These are reflexes from the conditions as have been described. Make the corrections as we have given and we will bring normal forces, or near normal forces for this body. We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 6/27/29 Letter from …, Florida in answer to Cayce Hospital questionnaire: “On April 4th you made a physical reading for me while I was in my home in …, Alabama. The following is the best report I can give as to the correctness of the reading and the partial carrying out of the suggestions.
“1st, as to the correctness of the reading so far as I can tell from my own feeling and memory of my past physical condition: You spoke of poor elimination. That is certainly true and I CERTAINLY tried to bring on elimination by taking a laxative NEARLY every night. I suffered from gas pressure around my heart which would cause sometimes HOURS of severe palpitation. These ‘spells’ would frighten me terribly and I finally decided they were more apt to occur when I was more constipated than usual. Then, in order to relieve the condition, I started taking laxatives; really, I guess in over doses for many days I would have as many as four or six eliminations. I realize now that I had a morbid dread of the palpitation spells and that the remedy weakened me greatly.
“Second, you speak of ‘subligations.’ I am not quite clear in my mind just what that is; but I have certainly been the victim of the surgeon’s knife having had three major operations. One ovary is entirely gone and the other ‘tied off’ so I construed ‘subligations’ as having reference to such as that. And, too, I believe you are correct in speaking of ‘the early change’ if that refers to the menopause as I have some symptoms tho’ not of irregularity yet.
“I have lived under a physical strain for years and have certainly forced myself to go about my work when my mental self was crying out against the ‘driving’ of my body. At the time of my ALMOST collapse, I was teaching school and had had a very strenuous session following a hard summer’s work in a tea room. Under my present life, if I am UP I am supposed to WORK. Being financially dependent if I do not make money for myself and DEPENDENT FINANCIALLY being oftentimes made very unpleasant, I tried to keep going.
“The above reason is why I did not go to you for my rest and treatment - I did not have the money of my own and my husband not willing to help any. It is no secret to you I am sure, that most people lack faith in your work. I had the faith and lacked the money and with him it was the other way around; but either or both were against my ‘cure.’
“I still have the faith, Mr. Cayce, and that is why I came here to do the best I could toward following your outline. We still own a little home here and naturally my expenses would be lighter. I came here six weeks ago and have done the best I could under the conditions. When you don’t WANT anything to eat and still have to cook what you SHOULD eat and then TRY to eat it, you don’t get much result. It is kind of like the frog that fell back two feet every time he jumped three to get out of well. I am feeling better though, and have taken the sun baths as often as possible. The osteopathic treatments are not as good here as in Selma.
“Now, conditions are such that I must go back to Alabama and we are leaving tomorrow. I shall try to continue the treatments there tho’ and if you have any suggestions, please make them.
“I am sure I should have written you for prices, and tried to borrow the money but I was rather discouraged over taking on more financial obligations in a weakened physical state.
“I have written you plainly, Mr. Cayce, for two reasons. In the first place, I am sure these matters are kept confidential; and second, I have tried to give details.
“If you are ever in Selma, please allow me [the] privilege of meeting you personally; and in the meantime please accept my gratitude for your cordial interest and courtesies.”
R2. 7/9/29 EC’s letter to [5429]: “My dear Mrs. [5429]: Many thanks for your report of the 27th. I only wish it had been possible for you to have come to Virginia Beach. I don’t think it would have been much more expensive to you to have been where you could have carried out fully the suggestions as were given. However, I realize what a real undertaking it is at times for people to convince others that there can possibly be anything in the suggestions that may be made through these sources. However, the hospital here is self-evident of at least quite a number of people receiving benefit through these sources, or else no such place as this could have come into existence.
“I am sure it would be very well for you to get a check reading on you sometime in the near future, but of course there is not much use unless you are able to carry out the reading in such a way and manner as to get the full benefits from the suggestions made. But you will know better about this than I, and we only want to assure you that we are anxious to try and be of help if possible. Don’t hesitate to call on us at any time.
“Hoping to be of service, and thanking you for your report, I am…”
R3. 6/10/30 GD’s note: Mrs. [5429] wrote that financial conditions were now better with her and she wished to renew her membership and to apply for a Life Reading.
