This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 24th day of March, 1930, in accordance with request made by self - Miss [5450].
[Edgar Cayce; Mrs. Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Dr. Lydic and L. B. Cayce.]
Room …, … Time of Reading Bldg., Home: 4:15 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. … N.Y.C., Bronx, N.Y. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [5450] - this we have had before. Improvements are seen in the general conditions of the system. Still there has not been sufficient change in the character of the eliminations to prevent those forces manifesting themselves in the form of the coagulations or localizations in pimples, boils, and such.
-
We would cut out all sugars from the diet. Increase the salines. Keep up the manipulation. Use, as the eliminant, more of those of the colonic irrigations. Give equal parts of Salts, Sulphur and Cream of Tartar as a purifier. Also prepare as this for a tonic - (and this would be good for everyone [who needs a] as a spring tonic). To one gallon of distilled water, add:
Sarsaparilla Root…1 ounce, Wild Cherry Bark…2 ounces, Dogfennel…1/2 ounce, (These are the common names) Yellow Dock Root…1 ounce, Dogwood Bark…1 ounce, Prickly Ash Bark…1 ounce.
Reduce this by simmering (not boiling) to half the quantity. Strain, and while warm add 4 ounces of grain alcohol, with 3 drams Balsam of Tolu cut in same. Oil of sassafras 20 minims, Tincture of Capsici 10 minims. Shaking solution together (though this may be bottled and kept), whenever the dose is taken shake the solution well together, and the dose would be half a teaspoonful four times each day, BEFORE the meals and before retiring. This will assist in clarifying the whole system.
-
Keep up the manipulations. Keep up also those of the stimuli violet ray] for the eyes, and we will find better conditions for this body. The eliminations - as created through the Sulphur, Cream of Tartar and Salts - these should be taken at least half a tablespoonful once each day. Good quantity, yes - but plenty of water should be taken with this. Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Would it be injurious to go without glasses whenever possible; that is, when eyes aren’t being used strenuously? (A) Let’s don’t do it until we cleanse some of these out of the system - then we can begin by stimulating the eyes and doing without glasses occasionally. Hasn’t been sufficient of manipulations given yet, for we want to follow all of these with the system, see? though they may be taken about twice each week, see?
-
(Q) Are the correct osteopathic treatments being taken? (A) These are VERY good, very much in accord - and KEEP them very much in accord, is that as being attempted to be accomplished with the medicinal properties being given. Medicinal properties may be given and manipulations given so that either one would be harmful, but they may be given so they will coordinate one with another; that is why we are stimulating eliminations. Don’t stimulate the eliminations with the osteopathic treatments as to cause those organs that are especially of the eliminations to be OVERTAXED, but stimulate the whole system sufficient that COORDINATION through eliminations is kept, see?
-
That is all for the present.
-
We are through with this reading.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 8/2/67 Sister [349]‘s letter:
Gladys - my sister [5450] has developed a nerve condition in her right hand which has slowed it up. She cannot type quickly nor write quickly as there seems to be no power in her hand. This is keeping her from getting a job, with the results that it is a depressing situation - for her, my mother [5449] and all of us, both financially and physically. She is under treatment by a doctor and last year he did send her to a neurologist. HOWEVER, I feel that there must be something in the readings which would be applicable to her situation.
Mr. [257] told me last night there is a hot castor oil treatment prescribed for such condition. He suggested it to Mrs. [136] and it helped. I know that no two person’s conditions are alike but if there is something in the readings that could help, I wish the information could be sent to me.
Could you do me a favor, and have someone at the Association send me this information and I will IMMEDIATELY send them a check for whatever the fee is. This is an urgent situation, and Mr. [257] seems to feel that the castor oil treatments will definitely help. We MUST get something for her. She won’t admit to a disability, which is wonderful, but at this point, not practical, because she wants a job in her own particular field - which is natural - but which is difficult to a prospective employer to hire someone who has this apparent disability.
R2. 8/11/67 GD’s letter to Mrs. [349]:
What a pleasant surprise it was to get your letter, and, in fact, everything about it fascinating, as you will see.
First, I have been working on your readings. I was about half way through when your letter arrived, after not hearing from you direct in over ten years!
Then your request about [5450]. I tried to think of a similar case in a reading and couldn’t. Then I went in the adjoining office where Dr. Wm. McGarey, fortunately, is working on our Circulating Files of readings for members. He is spending his vacation doing this for us. He is the one who made a study of the Castor Oil Packs in his clinic in Phoenix, a brief of which appeared in our A.R.E. Journal [4/67]. Well, he read your letter describing [5450]‘s condition, then listed the following treatments which he would recommend, based on his study of the readings:
(1) Osteopathic treatment to brachial area. (2) Colonics - 2 or 3.
(3) Castor Oil Packs on abdomen in series (3 days in succession each week) for 3 weeks. (4) Violet Ray hand machine after 3-4 weeks (when the system has been prepared for it by the other treatments).
I went back into my office getting ready to write you. It occurred to me that [5450] and […] were perhaps the only ones in your family who did not have personal readings. I thought I’d look and see. Imagine my surprise when I found that [5450] had obtained three readings, through your request, within a six month period, in 1929-1930, for her paramount problem of boils at that time. She was also having headaches, and trouble with her eyes. The reading mentioned the cause as being lesions in the cerebrospinal centers, especially lower lumbar and central dorsal region, “which is at the beginning of the ascending colon”, and “the weakness as comes about, tingling sensation in hands and feet at times” [!!!], etc. Osteopathic treatments were recommended, Simmons’ Liver Regulator, Epsom Salts Packs across the lower spine.
In a subsequent reading an herb tonic was recommended, colonic irrigations, AND the violet ray! Now isn’t that something? The only variation from Dr. McGarey’s recommendations were the Epsom Salt Packs instead of the Castor Oil Packs, and the herb tonic, etc.
So it seems to us that those lesions in [5450]‘s spine were never fully corrected, and that she needs the osteopathic treatments especially, with the other general cleansing treatments and tonics as recommended in her own readings. Does she by any chance still have a copy of the readings? If not, I will send them to her. If she does not know of an osteopath she prefers, she might go to Dr. Thomas W. Breese, 60 East 42nd St., N.Y.C. 10017. He took Dr. Geo. N. Coulter’s place when Dr. C. retired, Dr. having been recommended by Dr. Frank Dobbins years ago when Dr. D. went into the Army. (Dr. Dobbins is at 149 Charles Ave., Staten Island, N.Y., but I think he has retired. We do have people get in touch with him at times, though, to get his advice.)
In my own case I find that suggestions given in readings for me years ago often fit my needs at present and bring better results than anything else I try. I know several other people who have had the same experience.
Do let us hear what you decide to do. It was so good to see [2682] again. When are you coming to see us? Thanks for reports on the boys, too.
Love, Gladys
R3. 8/28/67 Sister [349]‘s letter: “I sent [5450] a copy of your letter and she did recall the rdgs.
“In the interim, however, prior to receipt of your letter, she started tr. by chiropractic and I understand her chiropractor is very good - he, of course, took x-rays, and seems to know how to handle her condition. If she is consistent in her visits to him, we can only hope for the best. He is quite optimistic, so, with [5450] being the sort of person she is, we hope she will keep at it. She hadn’t been working for a yr. - her physical condition as affected by her nerve disability made it a very tough year for her, and all of us. However, she started a new job this week - no physical strain on the nerves (physical), so we hope she is now on the road to better health.”

INFORMATION ON THE CAYCE HERBAL SPRING TONIC
The following formula for a tonic was given in reading 5450-3, and was stated to be ‘good for everyone as a spring tonic.’ This is the ONLY herbal tonic in the readings that was generally recommended. The individual for whom it was suggested was suffering from a variety of skin eruptions, which Cayce claimed to be internally caused. The Herbal Spring Tonic contains some of the most frequently prescribed herbs in the readings:
‘…this would be good for everyone as a spring tonic. To one gallon of distilled water, add:
Sarsaparilla Root…1 ounce, Wild Cherry Bark…2 ounces, Dogfennel…1/2 ounce, (These are the common names) Yellow dock Root…1 ounce, Dogwood Bark…1 ounce, Prickly Ash Bark…1 ounce.
‘Reduce this by simmering (not boiling) to half the quantity. This will assist in clarifying the whole system.’
An explanation of how some of these herbs act on the body was given in other readings:
SARSAPARILLA: A strengthener to the activities of the secretions in the stomach and intestinal tract (1012-1).
WILD CHERRY BARK: A stimulation to the lungs, throat and bronchials, and those organs above the diaphragm (2790-1).
YELLOW DOCK ROOT: A blood purifier, an active principle with the secretions of the liver (643-1).
PRICKLY ASH BARK: Acts directly with an activative forces in the liver itself, in the gall duct, and as a stimulant to the pancreas and the spleen’s activity (1012-1).
This tonic, which has been flavored with orange syrup, is available in an 8 oz size for $4.75. [3/5/73 GD’s note: See 5450-3, Par. 2 advising to “CUT OUT ALL SUGARS from the diet”!]
