This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 16th day of September, 1929, in accordance with request made by self - Mr. [5459].
[Edgar Cayce; L. B. Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mr. [5459], Mr. and Mrs. Rome and Thelma, Mrs. Reiss, Mrs. Strauss, and others.]

-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [5459]. This we have had before. NOW we find the first permanent basis of reliefs in this body, for both the proper eliminations and also for the proper coordination of the sensory, sympathetic, and cerebro-spinal system. As these pressures are removed along the various centers, as has been seen, and as the eliminations are set up properly through the activities of the alimentary canal and the organs of digestion and assimilation takes place properly, and the blood supply will add to these forces, this body will continue to improve - but we should keep for the time - while the labors may be begun, but over activity mentally, physically, and ESPECIALLY of the eating, or of those that would bring worry, would prove again detrimental to the body. Keep the good work going - that’s the best that can be said for this body, for it IS on the way to full, complete, recovery.
-
(Q) Meats except the juices of same and stimulants are barred from my diet. Is this a permanent restriction? (A) Until the system is better able to DIGEST for assimilation, these should be kept from the body - for, where the taxations are such that more needed energy is required throughout the other portions of system, why BURDEN the body WITH that that must bring stress and strain? Better do without these things for a little while, than to do without the use of self and of the forces of the system for a longer period - isn’t it? Do, then, as has been given.
-
(Q) May the body expect relief from the head noises by continuing present treatments? (A) These are clearing up! He finds periods now when these are longer and longer.
-
(Q) Will the body overcome the lack of buoyancy and weakness felt in waking up mornings? (A) This is a lack of coordinating forces between the sympathetic and cerebro-spinal forces of the body, as is produced by the pressures along the centers of the cerebro-spinal system. These, as the body improves, and with the changes as come from renewed blood supply, the energy must bring back - not YOUTH, but buoyancy to the whole system.
-
(Q) Is it advisable for the body to return home Saturday, Sept. 21st, in time to resume work on Monday? (A) PROVIDED the treatments - and worry is not added with the return. Keep the treatments as have been given. It would be better to keep the good work going, but if requirements are felt as such, then return. Ten days more, though, would add ten years more to the life! Which would he choose?
-
(Q) Is there any further advice? (A) Keep the heart singing, and the head will get attuned. We are through with this reading.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 9/21/29 Mr. [5459] left Cayce Hospital by permission, leaving this note for EC: “It is with mingled feelings I say goodbye - the material side of my being bids me to return to business activities, the spiritual side urges me to remain at the Hospital. My sojourn has been beneficial but I look for more improvement as I am conscious of the fact it is necessary to follow the advice as given in the readings so that I may obtain the desired relief which prompted my visit here…
“To you, Edgar Cayce, I pay my deep respect and trust you will so safeguard your health that no undue strain may be put on it. Pressure should not be permitted by those who surround you; even though your willing spirit and desire is always ready to help the afflicted, it should be borne in mind that you are only human and that too much should not be expected of your physical body.”
R2. 10/2/29 [5459]‘s letter to EC:
Mr. Edgar Cayce, Cayce Hospital Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Mr. Cayce:
In many respects a man is fortunate to be employed especially in a case like mine because it is necessary for me to keep the gain that I made at the hospital. Keeping free from worry is an effort but I never give up trying. In addition to that I am keeping to the diet as much as possible and taking osteopathic treatments three times a week.
My last reading was very encouraging because it stated that some of my troubles were clearing up permanently including the head noise, but that still gives me trouble. If it is possible to give me further advice, let me hear from you and later on it may be better for me to have another reading. As I explained to you in a private conversation, there are certain discordant elements which make it very hard for me to bear in this establishment. Only this week something decidedly unpleasant occurred, which to a certain extent, placed me in a humiliating position. No doubt that set me back, and strange as it may seem, I dictated a letter to you yesterday which my secretary thoughtfully refrained from sending, and do you know after reading it over today I am thankful it was not mailed. Never mind what it said now.
I realize more and more that my chosen field is not in the woolen business but more of an outdoor life in a teaching capacity which I think I am fitted for. Would a life reading reveal this thought on my part? None of my readings taken at the hospital said anything about the radio active appliance and it was not used on me at the hospital. Is there anything in New York that I could take in addition to the osteopathic treatments or do you think everything is going as it should.
Remember me kindly to Mrs. Cayce, your father and the rest of the staff. If at any time my letters sound blue you will have to forgive me.
Sincerely, [5459]
R3. 10/4/29 EC’s letter to [5459]:
Mr. [5459] New York City
My dear Mr. [5459]:-
I wrote you a little line the other day, but yours of the 2nd came in since. I’m mighty glad to hear from you, and I realize it is very much as you say - there are often things that arise in your everyday life that seem to be very combative with our intent and purpose, and it is necessary that we make definite efforts to meet and surmount these little differences that make for disturbing factors in our life.
Yes, I am sure the last reading was encouraging to you, and I’m sure if you keep up the suggestions just as close as possible you will find these noises will gradually lose themselves; for, as it is often said, one has to just attune one’s self to the surroundings and hold their purpose so definitely before them that they become attuned to those conditions - NOT losing sight of that truth as is held before them for their own development, for we become - truly - that which we constantly build in our mental vision.
Yes, the life reading - I’m sure - would indicate to you many of the hidden and innate possibilities within yourself. You have read enough of these, I believe, to have a pretty good idea of just what it will bring out. While each and every one is entirely different, they are so individual as to be really beneficial, if one will apply that gotten in the information. It is in the application, of course, of anything, that we are the gainers. Merely having the knowledge of a thing is not so beneficial as the application of that which we may know; for, as the spirit - or the truth
- is an ACTIVE element, so application of our individual conception is a growth from within.
I don’t know, Mr. [5459] of anything that would be added to your treatments there in New York. I understand from the study of the information, and have understood from many sources, that there is usually quite a difference in that needed for an individual under different environs, and this I’m sure you will easily see yourself, as necessary. It might be very well to use the appliance in New York, while it would NOT be necessary to use the same thing here - for the environs would be of the quieting nature, as is necessary for the best conditions, while there it is possibly needed to make that same necessary quieting effect. This we may find out when we check again on the reading, if you think well - or it might possibly be asked in your life reading - don’t know that it could.
R4. 10/10/29 [5459]‘s letter to EC:
Mr. Edgar Cayce, Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Mr. Cayce:
It was indeed a pleasure to receive your letter of the 4th, and although I may not write to you often you can rest assured that you will hear from me from time to time.
I feel sure I am improving even though set backs at times make me lose faith but I always try to picture how helpful you have been and the many friends, who by their influence and kind thoughts have stood by me. For a long time resentment was part of my make-up that I was suffering and from all the things that I have read and what I have also gathered from your experience that you must help yourself in order to hold on to what others have done and are doing for you and that viewpoint is gradually beginning to sink into my being.
I hope that in time to come I have a life reading, but before that, of course, I want to have physical check up, which, of course, is the main thing. Next week I return home from Summit and, do you know I am not looking forward to it as I have grown so fond of the country.
I thought you would like to see a copy of the West Point Ritual which I found in a local paper a few days ago. It is well worth reading because it emphasizes your own way of thinking and especially the spirit of the Cayce Hospital.
Sincerely yours, [5459]
R5. 10/23/29 EC’s letter to [5459]:
Mr. [5459] New York City
Dear Mr. [5459]:
I was indeed glad to have yours of the 10th. I certainly am in hopes that you are continuing on the improve, and that things are going along very nicely for you.
We have had a good bit of set-back lately. Dr. House’s illness and death kind of disconcerted all of us, but we know such things must come to one and all. It is our purpose to try and study and get the most, or DO the most in the time we have to do it in. Not, as the old saying goes, “Get all you can, and can all you get” - but to grow more and more through the service rendered to others.
We have quite a number of people at the hospital. The doctors are taking care of things pretty nicely, so far. We have some changes in some ways - I don’t know yet just how, but I hope we will get along alright.
Let us hear from you whenever you have the chance, and with kindest personal regards and best wishes from all,
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce EC:GD
R6. 10/26/29 [5459]‘s reply to Cayce Hospital Questionnaire:
Mrs. S. C. Atkinson, c/o Cayce Hospital Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Mrs. Atkinson:
I received your letter of the 24th and I certainly am pleased that you and others think of me occasionally because thoughts are helpful always.
Since leaving the hospital I have endeavored to follow out the advice and instructions as laid down in the readings and believe my physical condition has improved; at any rate, I have not lost any ground. At some future date it will become necessary to have another reading but for the present I have determined to carry on without any outside help. The nerve irritation in my ear is the most disturbing thing that I have to put up with; in fact, I do not feel any change for the better.
This morning I received a letter from Mr. Cayce and was distressed to hear of the death of Dr. House and I also recalled what you said the day he left. Mr. Cayce spoke of changes being made and I hope you will keep me posted because I have an intense interest in the work, and if at any time you good people need any advice for the benefit of the institution I hope you will call on me. It may be that some day I will be associated in a similar work because it would suit me.
Give my kind regards to all at the hospital.
Sincerely yours, [5459]
R7. 3/4/30 Letter: “A few minutes ago I talked with […] about her reading and she is very anxious for an appointment…
“The osteopath I spoke of is Dr. A. Lloyd Reid…a most capable, skillful man. He recommended a fellow classmate to treat me in N.Y., as naturally I could not travel 30 miles for treatments. He is keenly interested in the readings and understands them.”
R8. GD’s note: Many letters followed back and forth between EC and Mr. [5459] and his wife. For a time they were planning to retire to Virginia Beach.
R9. 3/2/31 Wife’s letter: “Someone was gracious enough to send us word in the form of the ‘Virginia Beach News’ dated February 20th [re Cayce Hospital closing?].
“You should know that our warmest thoughts are with you and for you during troublesome times as well as during the peak of successful days… We are both so grateful to you for your belief in us when we were in ‘no man’s land!’”
R10. 3/15/31 Mr. [5459] wrote suggestions re forming of the A.R.E. and the carrying on of the EC work.
R11. 6/1/31 Letter: “It was just like Edgar Cayce to send me a word of help. I thank you sincerely for thinking of me. The work in which I am engaged simply tortured my refined soul and it made me very unhappy, so much so I asked for two weeks release to go and rest. I returned to work on Monday and don’t feel quite so heavy and distressed as I did. My head gives me a deal of anxiety and it affects me physically. God knows I try desperately hard to carry on and so far I have succeeded with the help of my friends and of course my devoted wife. I know my shortcomings. Another financial blow hit me very hard recently but if only the pressure that seems to overwhelm me at times could be removed I can and will survive my present unhappy state of mind. The days feel like weeks to me, and no one - not even my own wife - will ever know how near the breaking point I have been. Dear friend, is there hope that I shall be myself again? Write to me soon, won’t you.”
R12. 6/11/31 EC wrote him an encouraging letter, hoping he would get himself in hand “to use the circumstances as opportunity for better things for yourself and those who love you; as we all do, and as you know your good wife does. We want to hear from you. We need you, and need your counsel and advice often.” EC told him about the A.R.E. organization meeting last Saturday.
R13. 12/31 Christmas Message with personal note was in Mr. [5459]‘s own handwriting.
R14. 7/22/32 Wife’s note to GD: “I have to thank you for a rare treat, the privilege of knowing Miss [369]. It grieves me so much not to be able to offer her real hospitality. But Mr. [5459] and I haven’t any home life at present. It is but work, eat, and sleep. Prosaic and depressing.”
R15. 12/10/32 Wife’s letter to GD: “As you and Mr. Cayce probably know, [5459] passed on last October 3. Life was difficult then - but now…” [We asked for details but she never gave them.]
R16. 12/29/37 Wife’s letter: “Sorry I have not had time to tell you I married again.”
