-
EC: Yes, we have those conditions that surround this body.
-
As we find, there are those factors that disturb the body; that are from infectious forces that attack the nerve plexus of the body - which produce, with the ravaging of the ganglia and plexus, that of paresis or contraction of the nerve and muscular forces. Hence there is prevented a normal activity and development by the WASTING of those centers or bulb gland or plexus forces along the spine; attacking principally the locomotary centers.
-
In the particular or specific condition at present, as we find, there may be added to the system that which would bring a more normal reaction and a preventative to this wasting of the body; reducing the temperature to such an extent as to bring eventually the nearer normal reactions to the body.
-
Should the fever continue, it will be necessary for transfusion from a body that has been cured or relieved of that known as infantile paralysis.
-
But, as we find, if the following applications are made in the present, this would not be necessary - but should the fever continue it will be necessary for such a transfusion, or infusion of blood, from such a body.
-
Begin with Atomidine in three to five drops three times each day.
-
Begin immediately each day, or oftener if the body continues to suffer or the fever rises, to massage into the spine a compound prepared in this manner, with the ingredients added in the order named:
Russian White Oil…2 ounces, Oil of Cedar Wood…1/2 ounce, Oil of Mustard…20 minims, Tincture of Benzoin…1 ounce, Oil of Sassafras…3 minims.
-
Shake these well together each time before the application is made, and massage the spine with same, using just what the body will absorb; and specifically - or more specifically - in the centers of the upper dorsal and the latter portion of the cervicals, and across the back in the lumbar and sacral area. Do not massage too briskly, so as to produce blisters, but to redden the skin.
-
Each of these ingredients will have its effect upon the supply of blood and reaction, and reduce temperature.
-
Massage from the base of brain downward; not toward the body, but downward all the way, you see, even onto the lower limbs.
-
Do this.
-
After these have found response, we may give further instructions, [547].
-
(Q) How long before it will respond, if following this treatment? (A) In the next twenty-four to thirty-six hours.
-
(Q) How can we get the present doctors to cooperate? (A) That isn’t our job. You have asked for that which will aid.
-
(Q) How did this infectious force get into the system, or what caused it? (A) The general condition, and coming under the influence of those things that brought same about.
Do these things. We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 5/12/34 GD’s note: When I phoned Mr. [257] and read my shorthand notes to him he informed me that the doctors had diagnosed [547]‘s case as spinal meningitis.
R2. The following Day Letter was sent to Mr. […] [[384]‘s brother, friend of Mr. [257]], via Western Union:
Infectious attack paresis contraction nerves muscles wasting of bulb gland centers along spine. Give three to five drops Atomidine thrice daily. Begin immediately massaging not too briskly but to redden skin from base brain downward on spine not upward even on lower limbs with compound as follows adding ingredients in order named. Russian White Oil two ounces. Oil of Cedar Wood one-half ounce. Oil of Mustard twenty minims. Tincture of Benzoin one ounce. Oil of Sassafras three minims. Shake well each time massaging what will absorb once daily or oftener if suffering continues. After following above twenty-four to thirty-six hours should fever continue be necessary for transfusion from body that has been cured of infantile paralysis. Full report special.
Ass’n R. & E., Inc. Day Letter - Collect
R3. 5/13/34 Mr. [257]‘s letter: “I am very sorry you could not have come at this time [at Mr. […]‘s request], but you must have felt the situation. I got to the hospital at 3 P.M. It took me until 8 P.M. to get the doctors to give the Atomidine, and to allow the rubbing, but only after a transfusion of ‘pure’ blood was given [at 5 P.M.]. She passed away at 9:15 P.M., or one hour later. I would advise if possible to ask in another rdg. what the effect of pure transfusion was, and why the blood of an infantile paralysis case should be used, where a child had meningitis, so the doctors said. I believe Mr. […] to be one of N.Y.’s most charitable men and a very big supporter of hospitals for children - he would be a wonderful friend - he invited you to visit him on your next trip. I’ll see him tomorrow and will write later. The little girl was beautiful - 10 yrs. old, sick 9 weeks, and looked just like ‘Alice in Wonderland.’ Well, they all appreciated your willingness and your aid, but it’s almost impossible where doctors are so arbitrary.”
R4. 5/17/34 Mr. [257]‘s mother [325]‘s letter: “I was sorry that you didn’t get the rdg. for the little girl sooner. [257] spent the whole day at the hospital trying to get the doctors to use your tr. but I needn’t tell you that they would not, but I know that the parents will try your work again, as they had faith.”
R5. 5/27/34 Mr. [257]‘s letter: “I was in to see Mr. […] yesterday; although he was very busy I was able to collect for you. You will find check enclosed for $20. I hope it will help along a little.”
R6. 1/67 In his book EDGAR CAYCE The Sleeping Prophet pp. 167—168, Jess Stearn reported the above case, saying:
“In other words, years before its introduction, he [Edgar Cayce] was advocating gamma globulin to step up the body’s resistance to the infection…
“Actually, the child had little chance, as Cayce had said it would take from twenty-four to thirty-six hours to respond to his treatment. Too little, too late, a familiar story.”
Background
Background
B1. Mr. [257] phoned for emergency reading for child [547] in hospital. Although EC had just given three ck. rdgs. an hour before the phone call came, he willingly and gladly undertook 547-1, so soon again, without thought of the taxation to himself. Mr. [257] submitted the three main questions.
