Board of Education) This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 14th day of May, 1930, in accordance with request made by self - Mrs. [5519], via Baltimore Sun article April 16, 1930 re EC.
[Edgar Cayce; Mrs. Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 4:30 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Maryland. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here. Now, we find there are MANY DISTURBING factors in the physical functioning of the body. These have principally to do with the eliminations, as have existed, and the effects this disturbance has produced in the system in VARIOUS ways. While the body at distress much of the time, yet the disturbances should not be thought to INDICATE the body helpless, as yet, though many will seem as to be serious.
-
These, then, are conditions as we find them with this body, [5519], we are speaking of:
-
IN THE BLOOD SUPPLY, here we find evidences in the organs through which the blood throws out and takes from for the enlivening and resuscitating of the physical organism itself. The blood heavy. Hence pressure, but - as WE find - not an organic heart trouble as yet - though the ORGAN ITSELF enlarged.
-
In the elements and constituents of the blood, we would find both overacid and over-dross filled.
-
IN THE NERVE SUPPLY, this we find shows the constant strain under which the body labors, and oftentimes there is the sheer WILL’S driving force that impels the body to go on. This, as we find, must be taken into consideration, would corrections be made that were to prove LASTINGLY beneficial. TEMPORARY relief may be given, but will the time be taken SOME PERMANENT relief may be had - even for one of the body’s age (as called in years), and these may - changes may be made as to bring a much BETTER physical condition for the body.
-
IN THE FUNCTIONING OF THE ORGANS, as may be surmised from the character of the disturbance, many ORGANS in their functioning are deranged, or WORK VERY much UNDER a strain.
-
Brain forces are good.
-
The sensory organism, as is seen from conditions in eyes, in the nervous system - for the sensory reactions all are under strain, and while there may be specific applications to aid ANY or ALL of the distresses in same, the GREATER LASTING benefit will come from a CONSTITUTIONAL change. The change as would be of LASTING benefits must come in a general manner. There is no NEED for the loss of the eye, should there be taken the precautions - or the clarifying of system in such a manner as that the rest may function in a coordinating way; so that the general reactions are much bettered; though - as may be seen necessary - in giving the general ability to work under the strained conditions, local conditions must not be forgotten.
-
In the throat, bronchia and larynx - here again there are seen evidences of hardships under which the body forces the activities of same.
-
In the lungs - these are very good, though NECESSARILY - with the low blood pressure - there comes at times those of depression that only added beauty in some form is able to bring proper reactions.
-
In the heart’s action - this, as seen, subnormal - but not as yet other than TEMPORARY, at TIMES, are there ORGANIC disturbances in heart.
-
In the lower digestive system we find the seat or the cause of the distresses. These, as we see, prove that there IS the poor eliminations - as call FOR the better assimilation, and that the bearing of refuse forces into the blood stream must endanger the activity of the liver, both in its excretory and secretive functioning. The system is seen, too, to indicate the acidity under which the body so often labors. This, in itself, has been the greater cause for the peristalsis, or for constipation - drying up of the mucus membranes’ activity throughout the system, and through the colon especially. These, then, are to be all reckoned with in the application for that as would be beneficial.
-
The kidneys show a BETTER effect than is NORMALLY found under SUCH distresses. This most nominally caused by the LIFE the body has led respecting the organs of genitation, especially the CLEANNESS of the life as respecting those conditions that make for hardships in the organs of the lower hepatic circulation.
-
In meeting, then, the needs of the condition - FIRST it would be well for WEEKS that the body soon CHANGE the surroundings and the environmental conditions, and that in the beginning there be given those properties EXTERNALLY and INTERNALLY that will set up the ELIMINATIONS, ERADICATING the poisons from the system, both through the alimentary canal, the respiratory system, and through that of the sweat glands themselves. Then, we find that these should not be overtaxed, one against the other - else we will find that RETRACTIONS would be severe, but begin with those first of LAXATIVES that are of the ALKALINE nature; using intestinal antiseptics with same of alkaline nature. This, as we would find, would be better in Glyco-Thymoline in small doses, and that of olive oil and of Petrolagar (alkaline Petrolagar) would be the LAXATIVE. We would apply those of the oil packs - Castor oil - OVER the LIVER, and those of the hot Epsom Salts packs over the colon. These would be given alternately.
-
Also we would have those of the sweat baths, or better still alternating these between the FUME baths - and be mindful that the temperature is not raised to such an extent as to produce too great a taxation on the heart’s action. Also we would use those of the manipulations as to cause all of the ganglia throughout the cerebro-spinal system to coordinate WITH that as is being set up for the eliminating of poisons from the physical system.
-
As to local conditions for eyes, for throat - we would use an antiseptic of a nature that CLEANSES the exterior portion. A weak solution of boracic acid for the eyes, and a COMBINATION of those of the changing between alkaline and acid as a mouthwash or gargle; using one period - or in the mornings - that of Listerine; in the evenings use the gargle of Glyco-Thymoline - full strength. Use as a gargle.
-
The dosage of the Glyco-Thymoline as an intestinal antiseptic would be from five to ten drops three times each day.
-
Let the diet be those of vegetables; LITTLE meats; plenty of fish or of sea foods.
-
Salt, air and sunshine, and sands, will also aid.
-
BEGIN with these, and we may assist in bringing better conditions for this body. Ready for questions. We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 5/17/30 Mrs. [5519]‘s letter to EC: ”…I was much pleased with your diagnostic Physical reading and it confirmed my suspicions of an enlarged heart, although my physician would never admit it. As this is my busy time, I cannot conveniently get away at this time. It would consume so much time in getting there and back. May I ask you how I am to give myself oil packs over the liver and those of hot Epsom salts over the colon and for how many minutes and how often? What are FUME baths and how given? I do not want you to think I am dissatisfied, as I am not. I only want as much information (plainly) as I can get. Thanking you for this extra trouble and assuring you of my appreciation and my desire to cooperate in every way to the best of my ability… I want to have a Life reading as soon as I am better and able. I think I told you that I work every day - in fact it is necessary for me to do so.”
R2. 5/22/30 EC’s letter to Mrs. [5519]: ”…Have yours of the 17th. Now, regarding the questions you asked, Mrs. [5519], regarding the treatments - I wouldn’t know how to describe it to you about the oil packs and the Epsom salts packs. The fume baths you will only be able to get, I am sure, at the Institution. I don’t KNOW of any other place where you can get this. I BELIEVE, if you will write to the Cayce Hospital, attention of Dr. Lydic, they will give you as much of the information as possible, and make it very much clearer to you than I would be able to do; so I would suggest that you do that, or make arrangements to come down here - even if it is for just a week - to get STARTED WITH all of the treatments. Then you would know just how they SHOULD be applied; for of course, where these are suggested, the people at the Institution are trained in this character of treatment, and possibly there’s no other place where you can get this as it should be given.
“Glad to know that you are pleased with the information. While you are here, without extra charge - of course - you can have this checked over by the doctor, and go through the laboratory tests to assure you as to just how correct the information was…”
R3. 5/30/30 Dr. L. A. Lydic’s letter to Mrs. [5519]: ”…In reply to your letter of May 28th, we can give you a private room, with bath, which would include meals and nursing care for
50.00 per week. The treatments call for manipulation and fume baths - both of which in a week's time would scarcely be more than6.00 to8.00 additional. There will be no charge for any other treatments prescribed. We can give you a room for55.00, facing the ocean, with same charges for treatments; or we could put you in the Hospital Home for45.00 per week; or in a three bed ward for30.00 or $35.00 per week, providing we know several weeks in advance so we may make reservations.“Hoping we may be of service in the very near future…”
R4. 6/28/30 Mrs. [5519]‘s letter to EC: ”…I am enclosing ten dollars for another Physical reading. May I ask you to make suggestions as plainly as possible for the care of my body. I need not tell you that I think that your readings are very wonderful as the enclosed check tells that tale. I could not spend this money if I did not believe in you. I must also tell you this: I have followed your suggestions in the previous reading as closely as possible. I have much less indigestion, I sleep better - I am anxious to know if there is really any improvement in my condition. My own physician (who I fear thinks I am not mentally alright to believe in such a thing) agrees perfectly with your diagnosis of my condition except that he says my blood pressure is high. A month ago it was (so he said) 172 and in another week I am going to have it taken again. Dr. Lydic writes me that I can be accommodated in a ward of three beds for $30.00 per week. I hope to have a week’s vacation around July 10 and I am going, if possible, to Virginia Beach for that week…”
R5. 7/7/30 [5519]‘s letter to EC:
Dr. Edgar Cayce, Virginia Beach, Virginia
My dear Dr. Cayce:
Your letter of July 5th at hand. Please do not reserve July at 3 o’clock for my reading that is if I am supposed to be present. I am not right sure that I should care to be present, in the first place, I fear that I could not ask very intelligible questions and besides I do not want to know anything about myself that cannot be corrected.
Second - Our Secretary is to be off for the week which is going to make my getting this week off an impossibility. I do, however, hope to spend a week in July at your hospital - I am not sure that a week will do me any good but it is the best that I can do. I will write you as soon as I am definitely sure of my vacation.
Very truly yours, (Mrs.) [5519]
I appreciate your prompt reply - I am most anxious to have a friend of mine consult you. For the present I can only talk to her and yet in my own mind I feel that it the thing that she should do. May I have a bit of literature that I may take her.
R6. 7/27/30 Mrs. [5519]‘s letter to EC: ”…No one was so disappointed as I at not being able to go to Va. Beach last Tuesday as planned. What I mistook for a sun pain in the top of my head proved to be a boil or an ulcer in the ear and I have been quite sick all the week. I still have another week’s vacation coming to me when I can get it and I still have a hope of going to your place. Your reading and the suggestions which I have faithfully followed have meant a lot to me. I am still taking the Glyco-Thymoline, the Petrolagar - the oil and salts baths. I have been benefitted and I am delighted with your reading. I shall have the readings followed up as I am able to do. Questions: [submitted for 5519-2] What can I do to further help indigestion, insomnia, constipation? Or shall I continue the above treatments? What, if anything, can I do to reduce the blood pressure? My doctor says it is twenty points at least too high. Can I do anything to improve my heart condition? Please give me as explicit directions for helping myself as you can… Also what can I do for sluggish liver if it is sluggish and again I have a sort of an eczema on my hands and body. Can I do anything for that… This eczema is an itching, something like fever sores.”

Background
Background
B1. 4/16/30 [5519]‘s letter: ”…The article in the ‘Sun’ of even date prompts me to ask you if it is possible for you to help me physically to overcome a chronic condition of constipation. I know there is some radical reason for it and yet, doctors have given me no help. I suffer with indigestion and heartburn which is, I believe, a form of same. In spite of constipation or perhaps because of it, I am steadily gaining in weight. Having to work and being sixty years of age, my increasing weight is a hindrance.
“Your charges also, please. You are probably so busy that you will not have time for this…”
B2. 4/19/30 EC wrote sending introductory data regarding his work, stating that those who came to the Institution would automatically have an earlier appointment. He asked her to send him a copy of the Baltimore Sun article since he had never seen it.
B3. 4/21/30 [5519]‘s letter to EC: ”…Hold me grateful for your prompt reply to my inquiry and know that I take much pleasure in sending you the clipping from ‘The Sun’ about which you asked. I am also enclosing a membership blank which, according to my interpretation, entitles me to a Physical reading without an extra compensation. The proof of my faith in your readings is herewith enclosed - check for $20.00. If I did not believe in you I should not send application for same. While I shall be unable to go to Virginia Beach in person I certainly do not want you to overtax yourself on my account. I trust that I am in no immediate danger. An optometrist has told me that sooner or later I shall have some serious trouble with one eye and while I do not see as well as I should like with either eye, I am hoping that he did not know what he was talking about. I suffer from obstinate constipation, indigestion, high blood pressure probably super-induced from the above causes. The booklets etc. which you sent were most interesting and I shall read and reread. You are a fortunate man to be able to do so much good. If I had have only heard of you a year ago - but why go into details…”
B4. 5/3/30 EC’s letter to Mrs. [5519]: ”…We are in receipt of your application for membership, and we are enclosing your membership card and letter. We are closing the applications for readings for the present, that we may be able to catch up with appointments that have already been made. This means that you will have to wait a few weeks before your appointment will come around, but it does not mean that you are left out of the ones that we will make appointments for - but I will notify you just as soon as it is possible, when we can make this. You no doubt can very well imagine how MANY requests we are receiving. Those who are able to come to Virginia Beach, of course, are given preference. We understand what a hardship this works on a great many people, but inasmuch as the Institution has been built and is operated to DEMONSTRATE the practicability of the information, it is necessary that we give them the preference. However, we will get to this just as soon as possible. We certainly hope and trust that we may be of service.
“When we notify you, we would ask that you make a list of questions to have answered during the reading regarding your condition. This might enable you to better understand the information as it is given…”
B5. [5519]‘s return reply: “Insomnia, swollen ankles and hands; much indigestion and constipation which might be caused from uterus, defective left eye. I work every day. Please send me two small booklets for friends.”
