This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 8th day of August, 1929, in accordance with request made by the self, Miss [5536].
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mr. L. B. Cayce.]
Time of Reading 3:35 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Indiana. (Check Physical by questions)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body, [5536]. This we have had before, and much improvement is shown in the physical conditions of this body.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Do the osteopathic treatments work against the electrical ones, as suggested by Dr. E. P. Weist the electrical doctor? (A) They do NOT! There is as much necessity of the one as of the other. The functioning of each, as it - the treatment - is applied, is to function in a DIFFERENT manner, BUT to produce coordination in that to which the applications are given. For in the applying of the electrical vibration, these are necessarily rejuvenating the electrical forces of the body as is related to nerve energy of the system. While the manipulations, properly given, are to apply to that direction through which the rejuvenation of energy is directed, see?
-
(Q) Is the body over treated? (A) No. Not over treated, but not always properly treated - as has been given, the manipulations should be given gradually a little deeper, until the corrections, the lesions, are ENTIRELY loosed or relieved in the body. Those of the electrical forces may be overtaxing, when not properly applied, just as the other may be - but these should work in cooperation one with the other, to bring about the proper relations of the organs of the system, one with another.
-
(Q) What causes the soreness in the back when walking, or when getting on knees? Do the osteopathic treatments keep this trouble stirred up, as Dr. Weist thinks? (A) This has just been answered - No! When these are properly given, and they are properly coordinated one with another, BOTH are NECESSARY - or it wouldn’t have been given!
-
(Q) Just what IS Swedish massage, as advised? (A) That the muscular tissue and the nerve ends are kept in accord with that as is necessary for the proper functioning of limbs as related to centers of the plexus from which it receives its energy, and that the muscular tissue from each sinew - as is joined in each extremity, whether to the torso or to the extremity of the body - is rotated in such a manner as to alleviate every center through which the blood supply and nerve supply of that particular portion of the body circulates!
-
(Q) Give specifically what should be done or taken for that necessary stimulation in alimentary canal for eliminations, for the capillary, the lymphatic circulation, the respiratory system? Just how should these changes be made in diet and in manipulations or exercise? (A) These are asking for all in one! Just make them plain common sense, and then we will get back to the proper relations one with another!
In the manipulations, osteopathically given, these are to coordinate with the exercises as is necessary for the emptying of first the colon, then the jejunum and the stomach - and this will carry on, will these be acted properly. That for treatments osteopathically.
As to what treatments will be for the electrical forces, stimulate those from the 7th and 8th dorsal - as is necessarily known, or should be known, by such an applicator! These will also stimulate digestive forces of body, if electrical forces are applied in proper way and manner:
While, as to diet, these have been outlined - those that are both nerve and blood building.
-
(Q) Is all meat still to be left out of the diet? (A) Those that are of nerve and blood building may be used in the proper coordination with the other properties as are given for the system. These - codliver, codliver oil, calf liver, or such - may be taken, as should be much of those that carry phosphorus and iodine.
-
(Q) What causes the ankles to swell? (A) Too much stimulation to central forces as related to electrical vibrations in same!
-
(Q) Just what is the improvement? (A) It’s wonderful!
-
(Q) Give any advice as to diet and eliminations. (A) These have been given.
-
We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 8/15/29 Letter from [5536]: ”…I received the reading of August 8th and your letter which followed it. We are pleased to know that you think that I am improving, and we were all glad to get the answers to our questions. Each doctor will continue to follow your instructions.
“According to Mr. [5540] he was talking to you concerning me coming to your hospital, and we think some of carrying out those suggestions. Mr. [5540] also said that you would probably be here the latter part of the month, then my uncle and I can talk the matter over with you. Both Dr. Weist and Dr. Crain expressed a desire to see you when you are in Richmond.
“I am sorry that you got the idea that they were antagonistic, as I really believe Dr. Weist has the case at heart speaking only what he thought was for my good.
“In case that you do not come, I would like for you to write to me what your charges are, and how long you would want me to stay. Do you furnish wheel chairs?
“Thanks…”
R2. 4/2/30 Letter from [5536]: ”…After consulting with my uncle, Mr. […], who has been from home on business for some time, I wish to state in reply to your letter of Feb. 12, that we have decided that for the present we will not renew his membership in your association. All of your suggestions have been carried out until about January 15th. Since then I have taken only the electrical treatments. I took the Swedish Massage from the first week in October to January as you suggested, and did not see any improvement.
“It seems as though no doctor can fathom my case. However, I have not given up hopes that some doctor will accomplish the desired results.
“We wish you well in your work…”

B1. 7/13/29 Letter from [5536]: “Since receiving your letter of July 6 I have been thinking of several questions that I would like to have you answer. Also to ask your advice on the plan of Dr. E. P. Weist, the electrical doctor, who is on the case. He thinks that I am not improving as I should, and that the osteopathic treatments work against the electrical ones. Also that I am overtreated. I am bothered so when I practice walking, as well as when I get on my knees with soreness in the lower back as if my back were curving in too far and my shoulders drawing back. He gives me diathermy for it, and he thinks that the osteopath keeps the trouble stirred up.
“What do you think causes that inflammation? He would like to see me try only the diathermy, violet light, infra lights, etc. for awhile or just the osteopath.
“I am of the opinion that the work of Dr. Weist does me more good than the treatment of Dr. Crain.
“In your last reading you stated that improvement has been made. Just what is that improvement?
“If you wish me to continue with the osteopath, just what is Swedish massage as you think it should be given?…”
B2. 7/21/29 Letter from [5536]: ”…I received your letter of July 17th and am very much disappointed that I can get no advice from you before August 8th, as I, as well as the doctors, am not at all satisfied with results after having taken so many treatments.
“Would you please tell me what this sentence of your last reading means? - ‘Not that any portion should be overtaxed at the expense of the other, but that as corrections are made, as the body begins the use of the organs and of the body itself - that necessary stimulation in the alimentary canal for eliminations there, that for the capillary, the lymphatic circulation, that for the respiratory system be stimulated, either through those of changing in the diets to meet the needs, or of changing in the exercise manipulations.’
“Am I still to leave off meat out of my diet? I have been eating some of late as your last readings do no say anything concerning it? One of the doctors wants me to eat liver.
“Also, again, as in a previous letter I ask, what makes my ankles swell?
“I am trying to follow out all instructions as you wish, so please make it clearer to me what you wish me to do…”
B3. 7/30/29 Letter from [5540]: ”…I herewith enclose a letter which [5536] had prepared to send to you and which I asked her to let me enclose with this letter to advise you that the little strain of impatience which shows in this letter is naturally caused by her anxiety to continue the improvement which showed in the beginning.
“I will appreciate your seeing that the matter of her diet as well as the changes to improve the eliminations are clearly explained in your next reading, which is scheduled for August 8th, as well as definite answers concerning just what treatments shall be given in the future.
“I think if these questions are answered that she will be put in a mental state that will assist in her continued improvement…”
B4. 8/1/29 Letter from [5536]: ”…We neglected to mail you the enclosed slip in the former letter. We hope it caused no inconvenience. We are enclosing stamps for you to mail the reading special delivery. In case that we should again desire advice from you, how should we do to get an immediate reading, as this time we waited from July 13th to August 8th. The doctors here are anxiously waiting for your letter. Please answer all questions in the reading…”
