-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [557]; this we have had before.
-
Now, as we find, in some directions changes have come, as indicated, not all for the best - yet much for the betterment.
-
These, then, are the conditions or changes that have come about in the physical forces of this body, [557] we are speaking of, in this room:
-
First, the applications of those things that were indicated for the activity of the glands have been beneficial; though these localizing the condition make the tendency for the acute condition existent in the ducts and the gall bladder area. Had those things been wholly applied as we have indicated, as we find, more normal conditions or reactions would have been brought that would have been more helpful.
-
Acute pain is brought from the disturbing factors or the sedimentary activities in the gall bladder, from the attempt of the body through this portion of the organism to secrete or to function with the activities when special or certain characters of foods or elements are taken in the system for the activity through the body.
-
In the reactions through the system there is a general disturbance through the stomach, in producing an overacidity; and in the general nervous system a racking condition - both sympathetically and cerebrospinally.
-
As we find, while operative measures may be considered - yet, as we may find with the application of these, they would NOT be necessary:
-
First, we would be rather systematic with the application of the Castor Oil Stupes. Have periods each day of two to three hours of using these, changing the packs once or twice (or each hour), applying them wet with the oil - though not so wet as to be discomforting, and over same apply the hot packs to keep them warm; not so hot as to produce such counterirritation as to cause refractions, but rather such as to make for the ability of the system to absorb the oil.
-
But BEFORE the packs are applied, we find it would be most helpful (in the present condition) to paint the gall duct and lacteal duct area (using a camel’s hair brush or tuft of cotton) with a mixture of one part Aconite to three parts Laudanum; afterwards applying over the area a towel wrung out of very hot water. This will tend to make for a perspiration in this portion of the body.
-
Then apply the Castor Oil packs.
-
We find that the use of Al-Caroid AFTER each meal will make for the more EVEN digestive fluids for the system; a quarter teaspoonful in a whole glass of water AFTER eating (first dissolved in the small amount of water, then the other added).
-
When the Oil Packs and the Al-Caroid have been consistently taken for four or five successive days, then begin (leaving off the Al-Caroid and the Packs) with taking Fletcher’s Castoria internally in very small doses. Take at least two bottles of nine hundred drops each, or eighteen hundred drops in all. Preferably take half a teaspoonful every half hour. To be sure, do not awaken the body from the rest periods to take same; but take in this manner during the whole waking state.
-
After these have been taken - that is, the Oil Packs, the Al-Caroid, the Castoria - for the draining of the system, the eliminations through the alimentary canal and the removal of these (for we will find, if these are taken consistently, there will be the eliminations of those secretions - or stones that are going to be found to be indicated as present, but these will be dissolved and eliminated and not produce near the discomfort as would arise from operative measures) - we would then take the Ash, not before; the Animated Ash, a quarter grain every other day, preferably just before retiring. Not IN capsule, but empty the Ash from the capsule onto tongue and wash down with a sip of water. But do not take the Ash unless it is followed in five to ten minutes (after the Ash is taken) with the violet ray, over the upper dorsal to the 9th and 10th dorsal area, for at least two and a half minutes. This will prevent irritations arising either in the alimentary canal or in the lacteal duct or liver area, or regurgitation to the stomach proper. Take these (the Ash followed by the violet ray) for about a week, as directed above.
-
During the whole period keep the diet as we have indicated, tending toward a greater alkalin than acid-producing. Beware of any conditions that would cause any strain upon the digestive system, especially during those periods of the Oil packs.
-
After this whole round of treatments, should nausea recur, then we would take another full round - first the Oil Packs with first the applications to prevent inflammation or soreness (that is, the Aconite and Laudanum), then the Al-Caroid, then the Castoria, and then the Ash followed with the violet ray.
-
Do these, and we will find we will remove these conditions, bringing near normalcy for this body, [557].
-
As for the other applications that we have previously recommended (the Atomidine and the Osteopathic manipulations or the massages), let these rest until at least two rounds of these present suggestions have been followed. Do not use them in the present condition.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Is the irritation in the bladder a serious condition? (A) This is rather the reflex condition; and as we apply these stimulations for the removal of the disturbances in the positive pole of the body (or the LIVER and the gall duct area), the irritation in the other pole (or through the KIDNEYS and bladder) will naturally be relieved.
-
(Q) Will these treatments relieve the constipation? (A) These will relieve the constipation when we have taken from the system that which produces such irritation as to require the flow of the gastric juices and the lymph circulation that prevents the proper peristaltic movement. But this will be materially aided. Keep the system more alkalin, through the diet as indicated. And keep those general activities that will, of course, necessitate changes to meet the needs as conditions progress. These are acute that we are meeting in the present; but changes must be met as conditions progress. These treatments should take care of the greater portion of the disorder, with the proper diet and proper precautions in these directions.
-
(Q) What is the best remedy for constipation, if the body needs to take something? (A) During the first week’s treatments as outlined the system will not require the taking of anything else. Otherwise for this particular body, under the existent circumstances, THESE we find would be the more preferable: Not in this specific application in the present, but afterwards - take the Al-Caroid after the meals for two days; then take two Caroid and Bile Salts tablets, which will make for a specific gastric flow that should aid in relieving constipation. But this should be only a PORTION of the applications in general for the body. Preferably we would follow a procedure in this manner (not during the first portion of the round of treatments here outlined, but afterwards):
One evening upon retiring take a tablespoonful Milk of Magnesia. The next evening at the same time take a teaspoonful Milk of Bismuth, in which there would be put three to six drops of Lactated Pepsin - in a whole glass of water; add the drops to the Bismuth and then stir in a whole glass of water and drink. The next day take the Al-Caroid after each meal for the whole day. Then the next day take the two Caroid and Bile Salts tablets. This completes a circle. Do this once or twice, and we will rid the body of the greater disturbances in this direction.
Follow these suggestions as given, and with consistency and persistency in the applications, we will bring normalcy for this body.
- We are through for the present.

R1. 12/14/34 Mrs. [557]‘s letter:
Dear Mr. Cayce -
I was disappointed I could not return to N.Y. to hear your lecture that Tuesday night and see you during that week. However I started on the Castor Oil Stupes that week and went through the regular course of treatment as suggested by you which took over three weeks. I took the Castor Oil Stupes over six days that is five times mostly 3 hours at a time. I had to skip one day making it 6 in all.
You said to keep fairly quiet at the time. I would like to know just how quiet you mean. As I am beginning another round of the treatment today beginning again with the castor oil compresses. I dried out twice before, took short walks, rested between times as much as I could but I got the most terrible cold like grippe. Was obliged to take grippe medicine, which in turn made me more constipated, had to have local treatments for nose & throat. Was most constipated even while taking the Castoria and as you said to take no other medicines at time of treatments was obliged to resort to several high irrigations and many enemas. A few days had to elapse between Castoria and Carbon Ash as I was quite sick, then took Carbon Ash for week as directed. Of course I took the Al Caroid as directed at time of stupes & will do so so now.
Regardless of the grippe etc. I know the treatment did me good, and am hoping for even better results this time, but would like to know just how much rest is required during these 5 days of Castor Oil stupes. Am calculating to finish them the day my sons get home. Is it harmful to dry out the nights I take them? Hoping to have a line from you, soon.
Ever sincerely, [557]
P.S. Constipation is still a great problem with me.
I have been reading about the cures with great interest and the spiritual literature connected with your work - Dec. 14, 1934
R2. 12/17/34 EC’s letter:
My dear Mrs. [557]: -
I have just received your of the 14th. We were sorry not to see you again before returning to the Beach. It had been our intention to be in New York until about the 7th, when we had hoped to spend a day or two in Philadelphia - as we had some associations there with professors at the University (who are following some of the reading suggestions), and had hoped to see you again. Also we have another member of the Association in Philadelphia whom we’ve never met. But we were called home on the 2nd by the very sudden and unexpected death of my wife’s brother in Kentucky. And I just got back to the Beach on the 13th from that sad mission.
I’m glad to know you feel the last round with the Castor Oil packs has been of some help. There certainly must be a very stubborn condition regarding the constipation, which no doubt is caused by the inflammation in the gall duct area.
As I understand from the reading in regard to the rest, you should just not be overactive during such periods so as to put too great a strain on the body. I should think that drives, short walks or the general activities about the home would be alright.
I’m certainly sorry to know that you took a cold during the time. That must be from the diet. Wasn’t there a specific diet recommended for you? If you will keep rather closely on an alkalin diet, I don’t think you will have any trouble from taking cold - as, according to the readings, a cold cannot exist in an alkalin system. Is it possible for you to keep one meal each day of entirely raw vegetables? Also one meal entirely of citrus fruits would be well, if you could manage it. If you would eat the citrus fruits for breakfast and the raw vegetables for lunch, I should think that a well-balanced meal in the evening - whether dining out or at home - would be alright; for you could keep your system in an alkalin condition from the other two meals - provided you didn’t eat too much starches or sweets at the evening meal.
The high enemas should be very helpful to you in overcoming the condition; however, from the readings, I would suggest that you use the oil - Olive Oil - or the Alkalin Petrolagar in the last portion of the water injected; about a tablespoonful of the Alkalin Petrolagar to a quart and a half of water, kept stirred in the tepid water during the period of injection. This would be most beneficial to the intestinal tract.
I don’t know of anything better for you to take as a cathartic than Castoria, in very small doses; of course, it is slow, but it is absorbed into the system and leaves an alkalin condition. I would suggest that you continue to use it, even if there is required the taking of two or three bottles at the time before there is the proper activity. If this is persisted in it will get rid of the constipation, provided your diet is kept properly and the oil packs used consistently to get rid of the trouble in the gall duct area. Of course, if it becomes necessary for you to take the Caroid and Bile Salts tablets occasionally, don’t hesitate to do so - but don’t over do it.
I’m glad that you have found the data interesting. Know that we are always glad and anxious to hear from you, and we will be glad to know just how you come along with the next round of your treatments. The body should absorb sufficient Castor Oil to break up all that congestion. From the experiences we have had, I’m sure it will do this. Keep the packs just as hot as the body can stand them. You know this will open the pores and let the oil be absorbed in the system in such a way that it may assimilate with the circulation, and won’t give such strain or stress to the body as when taking it internally. It’s rather a messy sort of job, but it will be effective I feel sure.
Just this morning I had a letter from Mrs. [489], and she is very anxious about some appointments we have failed to make for her sooner owing to the fact that we had to leave New York sooner than we expected. She is one of the loveliest persons I think I have ever had the pleasure to know.
Appreciating your letter, hoping this explains things, assuring you we are glad to hear at any time, and Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, I am
Sincerely, EC:GD
R3. 1/28/35 Mrs. [557]‘s letter:
Dear Mr. Cayce -
I would be interested to have some more of the pamphlets if convenient -
Your kind letter of the 17th was a great help to me. I was terribly discouraged about then as nothing seemed to work very well. I got the second course of the Castor Oil packs taken just before my boys arrived home for their 3 weeks Xmas vacation, including the Castoria, and had 5 of the treatments with the Carbon Ash, the other 2 after they arrived.
I found out that while taking the packs, I can’t do a great deal else. They seem to help the soreness in the right side some but that or the Castoria did not seem to help the constipation although, I’m sure it’s healing and relaxing.
When the boys arrived I had a pretty busy active time, but am always careful of my diet. I went out more than usual at night the first part of January, but tried to rest as much as I could between times. I got pretty discouraged at times but did not return to Dr. Stengle [?] as he had told me there was nothing to do but try medication and then operate, if not successful.
One day about ten days ago, I met a friend who advised me to try a certain diet, not very different from what I had been doing - citrus fruit juice and raw milk for breakfast, bananas & raw milk for lunch, or in place of bananas salad or fruit or raw vegetables. As soon as I could get my muscles to stand roughage to that extent and a well balanced hot dinner once a day with meat, green vegetables, etc. Along with this are 7 abdominal exercises. The first few days I had wonderful results and was much elated but since have had to resort to medicines for my bowels - but not as much. Although my stomach has been better & I hope with persistence I will not need the medicines. I still have the soreness in the right side.
In your first directions, you said to do the whole thing once, or twice, if necessary, which I did just as directed. Later, did you mean to keep on repeating the Castor Oil Stupes, and taking the Castoria whenever needed as a regular laxative? You didn’t mean to take it continually in half hour doses? Did you? Or did you mean at night in a large dose, or several times a day.
Of course I could take another course of that without interfering with what I am doing, if you thought well of it. The Castor Oil Stupes do exhaust me for some reason - and make me subject to cold while taking them.
We are staying here with friends for a few days but return to Phila. tonight. Later I may have a chance to go to Florida for a month.
The main occupation here seems to be fox hunting and as I do not even ride, I find I have some leisure time to myself which seems to worry the others but pleases me a lot.
Will be in Bryn Mawr tomorrow.
Yes I feel Mrs. [489] is a wonderful person and most unusual. She is also a wonderful friend.
I feel you and your work are also wonderful. Your life must be very full as your good work must be spreading in leaps and bounds - for which I enclose check.
I was sorry to hear of your brother-in-law’s death. Will you please extend my sympathy to your wife. We got on the subject of reincarnation last night. It was interesting although no one seemed to believe in it but me. Don’t you feel you have had the proof of it from your readings. I am going to visit Mrs. [443] for a few days in N.Y. sometime after I return home.
If I could only shake off this digestional disorder I feel I could accomplish something, as I contact so many people - but I seem to be able to go out so little. However I have not given up.
My best wishes and blessings to you all.
Sincerely, [557]
R4. 2/15/35 HLC wrote her to write or wire EC to his address in Washington, D.C. (where he had forwarded her letter), if she wished an early appointment. EC also wrote advising he would be glad to give her another reading while in D.C. or as soon as he returned to Va. Beach.
R5. 7/3/35 [557]‘s letter:
My dear Mr. Cayce:
I have been in the hospital, having an operation on my nose at which was removed some infected obstructions. I have been out only a week which is why you have not heard from me before.
Mrs. [489] asked me to go down with her and a friend to the Congress, but on account of my health, it was impossible.
I am enclosing a check for twenty-five dollars ($25). At present, I cannot see my way clear to make a definite arrangement to contribute a certain amount, as your last letter suggested, but if you will send me the quarterly announcements, I will see what I can do.
I am trying to get away next Monday and then my address will be: The Dunes Club, Narragansett Pier, Rhode Island. I shall hope to have time then to write you more fully on several subjects.
