Time of Reading San Saba County, 3:50 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. San Saba, Texas.
-
GC: You will have before you the well being drilled in Rocky Pasture, San Saba County, Texas. You will give the conditions about the operations, giving the depth and what is to be encountered below this; also any information that will assist in handling these operations.
-
EC: We have the operations here. These we have had before.
-
Now, we find not a great deal of difference in depth from that as was had before, yet the surrounding conditions are much better. However, there will be found the necessity of setting casing at the depth as given, near some hundred feet below the present casing sitting.
-
The formations as will be encountered - near the eighteen twenty-three (1823) depth the greater change will come, being that of the sand formation or that of top mountain sand, or hickory sand, or green sand as known in various portions of country or oil districts. In this will be the first showings of production, as given, in the lower portions of this strata near the twenty-two to twenty-four hundred (2200 to 2400); yet we will find white and chalky formations with slate and colored chalk in the lower part, entering the larger pool in or near the twenty-six hundred (2600) feet.
-
The conditions surrounding operations will gradually be on the improve as conditions improve so that operations may continue in a steady manner. The water supply will be sufficient, as given, near the end of the present month - 22nd to 23rd. Follow those instructions given and the success will come.
-
We are through with this reading.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 2/22/28 EC’s ltr. to [4906]: “My wife and I had just come back from a 3 weeks business trip to Alabama, Tennessee and Kentucky, when your letter was received… I certainly glory in your spunk in sticking to the work there, and the more I hear of how the other fields where we had located production have produced when they were drilled, the more I am convinced of the success of your operations there. Just the other day in Alabama I was told by a group of men whom I gave information to about 10 years ago, about how foolish they had been in not following out the information just as it was given in the reading at that time, for in the field - exactly where it was located in the reading - a man brought in an exceedingly big gas well, and sufficient oil - they say - to pay for the operations, and oil in that district, to say nothing of the gas, is proving very much worth while, for gas in an industrial district is very valuable, as of course you know - but I feel that you will carry out these operations and be more successful than even your fondest dreams have ever been.” [See [4417] - Ala. & [4416] series & [3940]]
R2. 4/15/28 Mr. [4906]‘s letter: “Well, I finally got down to 1946 ft. I hope to be 2000 by next Sunday. I got a hole full of salt and sulphur water at 1860; runs over top all the time. I did not pull my 6 5/8 from 1723 but drilled on in the wet hole. I am glad I did not pull it for if I had I would have gotten this 1860 water and the hole would have been wet anyway. It filled the water hole on the exact day your reading said it would. I don’t understand about this water coming in below 1823 level. It’s the first thing you have missed.
“Cayce, my leases are all up on 9/1/28. Am I going to be able to finish before that? Is it going to be hard drilling all the way to 2600 ft.?
“Mrs. Julia Moore is at the point of death with the flu. I have not been so uneasy about her as the family has, for as I recollect one of my readings said she would be here to see the well drilled in.
“Cayce, I want you to take the following reading for me: (1) Please find out at what depth I must run my 5 3/16 inch casing so as to cut off all water and cavings above the 2600 ft. sand. (2) Will it be as hard and slow a drilling all the way as it has been? (3) Will it be necessary for me to start getting extensions on my leases or will I be able to reach 2600 ft. before Sept. 1st; if so, about what date will I finish and get the oil? (4) Will my brother […] of San Diego, Calif., be interested in the proposition I made him today whereby I will get enough to finish the well? (5) Will Mrs. Julia A. Moore survive her illness and be alive when the well comes in? “Cayce, old man, these are 5 questions I would love to have answered. You know sometimes I grow tired but never discouraged, so let me hear by return mail. I am having a hard old pull and it’s hard to get a well drilled that deep in this lime rock. So many people discredit what I am trying to do, especially the big companies, but every morning I tackle it with a new vim that will surely get 2600 after a while. I will be working and watching for your answer.”
