EC: We have had him before. [No copy of earlier rdgs. on file.] Now he has many things, troubling him in minor details.
-
(Q) What is the principal trouble? (A) Nothing especial. Principal trouble is indigestion, caused from nervous reflex … [word(s) missing]. Having no stimulation. These nerves extend down the front part of the body, and governing the heart, causing vertigo and palpitation of the heart. There is no organic trouble of the heart.
-
(Q) Where do those reflex actions start from? (A) Straight from the second and third cervical, dilating, as you see, through the brain, and causing this twitching of the face at times.
From here down the spine through the sympathetic system. Clear on down; then through the nerves here governing the heart. See on down the right side - across to the left. These govern the palpitation of the heart. When this is turned loose here through the solar plexus, which comes in contact with the sympathetics. When we have a relaxation through these sympathetics, then we have a relaxation of these muscles or nerves governing the heart. You see it? Commencing here at the second and third cervical dilating to the front, to the heart, governing the palpitation of the heart. When this is turned loose this way, we have a fullness or gurgling of the heart. No organic trouble. We have the same trouble through lack of stimulation by the nervous system. The solar plexus nerve causing congestion or clogging, causing constipation through the lower part of the bowels. Then we have the same thing, with too much gastric juice; not enough to … [word(s) missing] in the lower part … not enough to … pass into … the lower part of the intestines.
-
(Q) Is there any other reflex action and - (A) We have the only reflex action through the lower part of the system. Here we have reflex action from the condition here in the lower part of the bowels, that causes reflex action through the kidneys, causing an extra amount of acid through the urine. We have acid urine. No sugar. That would cause organic matter. Simply an overtaxation of the kidneys throwing off this force, producing some trouble in the bowels. Coming on down along the spine, and on the outside of the spine.
-
(Q) What will be used to correct this condition? (A) Stimulating the condition between the nervous system and sympathetics.
-
(Q) What would you use? (A) First, you must change the condition you find in the stomach. First you must take something into the stomach that will cause the (similation) of the gastric juices in the stomach, passing out in the intestines. These different troubles we have here in the lower bowels. Then we take it out through medicine. Or take it out through any similar means that will remove it. We take water - fill it full - the whole stomach. The gastric juices fill the bowels, and that causes the gastric juices through the stomach and the lower part of the intestines - to stimulate and enough of the gastric juices to pass out to keep down this matter.
-
(Q) What would you use? (A) Potash.
-
(Q) What sort of potash? (A) Ide Iodide?]. Small quantities. Then you see we need to keep up - to keep up this trouble in the stomach, to cause the digestion to be in proper form - need clarey water.
Then we need a relaxation of the whole body all over. Not so much stimulation through the head as we had before. In the treatment he has had, has caused only to relax - [in lumbar] not enough to throw all off, causing a cathoic [Cathartics]. That will never take all of it off, or the trouble away, or similate these forces till it is put in proper condition to receive it.
-
(Q) In addition to this, is there any other means of stimulation, from Osteopathy? (A) He has had too much osteopathy treatment. Stimulated these forces so much that it has caused too much force below - solar plexus, and let that relax so much - that helps this out. That is what caused this trouble. Because when you contract or relax these muscles enough out here - along the spine, and relax these muscles or nerves here governing the heart, then that produces this force - vertigo you see. Because the circulation is too strong. Produces palpitation of the heart. We want to quiet this. Take something into the system to cleanse it.
-
(Q) What form of potash would you use? (A) Ide Iodide?] of potash.
-
(Q) Any other means in addition to the Ide of potash, with plenty of water? (A) Clarey Water [Clary Water] in the stomach.
-
(Q) Spell that? (A) Clarey water. [Clary Water]
-
(Q) What about alcoholic stimulants? (A) The Clarey Water [Clary Water] is composed of alcoholic stimulants. That is not needed in this, only enough to keep it as long as it is taken in the intestines. That is composed of gin, cinnamon, and tary [clary] flower. That takes up or similates the gastric juices of the stomach. [See 5676-1, Par. B1 for detailed formula.]
-
(Q) What is the condition of the liver? (A) The liver is good. It has been overworked. Through cathartics. That produces this throwing off enough to force out through the lower part of the intestines - as throwing off bile. Bile duct is not dilated. Both lobes of the liver, right and left, are in good condition. Good condition, a normal liver. Spleen as you see - we have had in the former condition. You will find that very much better; through the left lobe or end we find it was formerly impact tight from overwork, and exercise of the brain. Now see along the spine - they have just overdone, and thrown the same work on the solar plexus nerves, and causing them to relax. Should be in normal condition.
-
(Q) Is there any abnormal condition in any other part of the body? (A) None.
-
(Q) What about his diet. What particular kinds of food ought he to eat, to help correct this. (A) Leave off his meats. Take on starches. Something that will similate in the stomach easily. Then when the nerve forces take [act?] in proper order, they [he] will digest most anything.
[GD’s note: Par. 17—27-A below are another stenographer’s version of the same reading. Paragraphing is continued from above reading for indexing purposes.]
- ACL: Mr. Cayce, you are now going to sleep, a deep, sweet, restful sleep; you are breathing full, and free; all the emunctories of the body are performing their functions perfectly. [HE SLEEPS.]
You now have before you, the body of [5676], … Street, Brooklyn, N.Y. We want you to go over his body and tell us the conditions you find.
-

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 3/23/73 GD’s note: In going through an old post card file of Gertrude Cayce’s (preserved from her Bowling Green days when she was a Pen Pal) I found an old envelope postmarked front from Brooklyn to Edgar Cayce in Bowling Green 12/30/07 and back received in Bowling Green 1/1/08. See Source File Key #5676 for postmarked envelope. There was no letter inside, but it indicates that Mr. [5676] was still in touch with Edgar Cayce on that date.
Background
Background
B1. Earlier readings for Mr. [5676] are not in A.R.E. files. Perhaps he was present for the earlier readings, or perhaps they were non-health readings. Excerpts from Edgar Cayce’s diary indicate that the following rdg. [5676-1] for Mr. [5676] was perhaps in the Spring of 1903, in Hopkinsville, Ky., where he went to have Dr. Al C. Layne conduct the rdg.: [See pages 137, 145 of THERE IS A RIVER.]
“About that time I received a request from a Mr. A. [5676] in New York City for a reading on himself. This was my first experience in trying to give information for one at a distance. Mr. L. [Al C. Layne] conducted the experiment in the presence of several physicians, for I made a trip to Hopkinsville for that purpose. In this there was clary water suggested for him. We did not know whether this was a preparatory medicine, or whether there was any such thing or not, but the information written at that time was sent to Mr. A. [5676]
“Some weeks later, as he had been unable to obtain the preparation, he asked that we try to give the formula for making it. This reading was conducted by Dr. B. [Blackburn] in Bowling Green, with quite a number of prominent persons present - business men, professors and doctors. A formula was given [See GD’s note below]. Something like a month later I received word from Mr. A. [5676] that he had received a letter from a man in Paris, France who informed him that his father fifty or seventy-five years before had made and marketed a preparation under the name of clary water, and the formula was identical with that which had been given in the reading to Dr. B. Mr. A. [5676] reported receiving a great deal of benefit from the taking of the clary water.”
[GD’s note: We do not have a copy of the check-up Physical Rdg. conducted by Dr. Blackburn. However, in a letter 10/12/31 Edgar Cayce wrote out the formula for Mrs. [5480], [a diabetic] from memory - 5480-1, Reports:]
Put 6 ounces of the clary flower (or garden sage, dried) in 32 ounces of distilled water. Reduce by slow boiling, or steaming, to one-half the quantity. Strain while warm and add:
Simple Syrup…1 ounce, Ambergris…15 grains, dissolved in Grain Alcohol…1 ounce, Gordon Gin…8 ounces, Cinnamon (preferably in the stick)…1 dram.
Shake solution together before dose is taken. [Dose: 1/2 teaspoonful 4 times each day, after each meal and before retiring.] You will be able to obtain ambergris from either Lehn & Fink or Eimer & Amend, N.Y.C.]
