This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 14th day of September, 1934, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [576], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mildred Davis and Beth Graves.]
Time of Reading 10:55 to 11:05 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Ohio. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [576].
-
Now, as we find, conditions show a great deal of improvement in many ways since last we had same here. Not only is there relief from the pains but there is a better outlook from the mental aspects of the body; more hopefulness and more optimism. But there is the same attitude, or same way of acting, in the character of expression, in the manner in which the body - through the assimilations - is resuscitating and reviving influences through the blood stream itself. This, as we find, is the REAL basis for the expectancy of conditions to be the more ON the improve, if - of course - there will be the proper precautions taken respecting the activities of the body.
-
While it behooves the body to be active in its physical exercise, as well as in the mental abilities, this may be overdone as well as underdone. Hence no undue exposure, especially in damp, bad weather. No allowing of the system to become overburdened with acids in the system; being mindful of the diets that have been indicated, that the system is kept more in the order of alkalinity in the body. For with the alkalinity rather in excess than in the minority, we would find cold and congestion will have no activity or effect on the body; for the germ cold does not live or subsist or take hold in an alkalin reacting effluvium in the body.
-
As to the conditions of the glands in the areas indicated, these we find much improved also.
-
It would be well that very soon there be again begun the use of the applications with the fluids through the Elliott machine, for the applying of the heat to the body to prevent contacts being made in such ways and manners as to tend to make for stoppages of the circulation in portions of the body disturbed.
-
As we find, it may be indicated by the manner in which they have responded not only to the applications of the heat but in which the other portions of the system as indicated HAVE responded, the condition is not of the fibrous nature; nor have they taken hold in such a way. The condition is rather of the nature where the thinning of the walls by strain has allowed the fluids of the body to form in accumulations to prevent the strains on the system; and these are in excess, thus producing at times the UNDESIRABLE conditions.
-
We would, then, keep the Ash, with the violet or ultra- violet ray as indicated - the violet ray, provided it is given deep - at least a few minutes after the taking of the Ash.
-
We would have at least one more round, and possibly one and a half more, of the use of the Elliott machine application.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) How long before these should begin? (A) As we find, as indicated, they should begin by the fifteenth or sixteenth - present month.
-
We are through with this reading.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 10/9/34 He referred a friend for a rdg. saying: “He is only 64… I told him about my case and that you had brought me back from the brink of the grave and that I was confident you could do as much for him…”
R2. My improvement continues encouragingly altho it is slow. I am working with prudence all that my returning strength will permit. Sunday last I sent out my first syndicate “story” to 177 daily newspapers with the hope that I will sell enough to make this sort of work pay me a better income than I have had for some years. The pain is slowly but surely diminishing, I am able to work longer hours without exhaustion, and I walk much more briskly, and feel much better so that I’m encouraged to expect even greater improvement. Dr. Shroyer, who is giving me the Elliot machine treatment, is much encouraged at the progress up to date and feels that the prostate trouble will be relieved entirely, in due time.
With kindest regards and best wishes, I remain, Gratefully yours,
R3. 11/14/34 Dr. Shroyer has given me 35 treatments up to and including Oct. 22. At that time he made an examination of the prostate and found it a trifle more than half reduced in size. He says my case was of such long standing that it has not responded to treatment as he had expected. He has deferred further treatment till the first week in December. He said it was for the purpose of permitting nature to do its part in readjustment during the rest period and that when he resumed the treatment the prostate would show still greater improvement in the interim. The next series of treatments will remedy the defect, I inferred from what he said. He does not think the case hopeless, but it is unusually obstinate. The pain in the abdomen has almost wholly disappeared, which is a relief. But the annoyance caused by the enlarged prostate in eliminating urine from the bladder has not been much improved. It is one of the most disheartening if not discouraging results from the prostate enlargement. During the past three weeks, because of the cold, my physical weakness has returned so that I have to spend about 12 hours out of the 24 in bed. Besides, I have not had sufficient strength to do anything else than prepare my Book Chat for the radio once a week and write the six columns for the newspaper every week. My syndicate work has had to be discontinued necessarily. My first “story” sent to 177 newspapers was a “dud.” That was most disappointing, as you can understand. The little work that I do is exhausting and I have to force myself to work. My “pep” has disappeared. All the same and in spite of everything I’m fighting with my back to the wall with hope and courage and with a heart that never forgets to sing, with gratitude for more blessings that come to me every day than could not be enumerated on this sheet! I’m determined to win in this fight so that I may take an active part in the settlement of the greatest crisis our nation has ever faced. My desire to regain my lost strength is not altogether selfish.
In your judgement, is there anything that I can do that I’m not doing till the Elliott machine treatments are resumed? I have discontinued the violet ray treatment and the carbon ash, assuming that to be the wiser course.
Now that my cold is better my appetite is improved and I’m relishing my food once more.
I dislike to afflict you with such a dismal tale but I thought it better to state facts.
With gratitude for what you have already done for me and with kindest regards and best wishes, I remain, Yours sincerely,
R4. 5/30/35 …3. Now as to my condition: Dr. Schroyer has been treating me with radium, both postterior and anterior applications, for the prostate trouble, as he thinks with encouraging success, altho I can note but little improvement. The weakness and utter exhaustion that follows but slight work or but little walking continues. Last week the doctor said it wold require treatment every ten days for three or four months - and possibly longer - before anything like recovery could be expected. To give you an idea of my weakness, it often occurs when I go down town to peddle my books from office to office, or perform any ordinary duties about the house such as I must do, I’m obliged to sit down and rest a few minutes before proceeding or else I would faint away. It is disheartening, but I won’t permit myself to say “discouraging” for I’m still hopeful and fighting to the best of my ability. I cannot go into full detail in describing my condition, but it is sufficient to say, perhaps, that I suffer discomfort both night and day.
- I have had to discontinue my newspaper work and have written nothing for the local papers for many months. Likewise, for lack of physical strength, I have been obliged to abandon all work on syndicate matter, from which I expected to add to my income.
And, in spite of all this, I’m hoping to so improve that I shall yet be enabled to earn an income adequate for all expenses and to pay my accumulated indebtedness. One of my close and dear friends has facetiously called me “an irrational optimist!” Maybe he is right. But I shall continue to fight and hope just the same!!!
I’m more sorry than words can express that I can be of so little use to you. And I want to assure you that, if it had not been for your intervention last June I would have passed over months ago. You renewed my hope and started me on the road to recovery, which, if I succeed in attaining, will be due to your efforts and advice.
With all good wishes and heartfelt gratitude for your generous treatment, please believe me your appreciative friend,
R5. 6/6/35 Dayton, Ohio, letter to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Today I called on Dr. Schroyer and had him read your letter of June 3, which arrived this morning - so you see I’m answering promptly. The doctor said: “Go ahead. Let him check up on the case and show it to me when it is made. You can tell Mr. Cayce about the treatment thus far and anything else you want to tell him.”
About six months ago Dr. Schroyer switched from the Elliott Machine treatment to radium, applying the latter alternately thru the rectum and thru the urethra - post-terior and anterior - for periods of from one to one hour and a half. This treatment has been given at intervals from 15 to 20 days apart. The last one was given 10 days ago and the next will be given June 16.
The result has been beneficial in two principal ways: (1) the incontinence has been lessened; and (2) the enlarged gland - prostate - as shown by a physical examination, has been more than half reduced in size. A third benefit has been noted that the urine passes more readily, from a half to a pint while semi- or full reclining - not when I’m sitting or standing. After thus urinating at periods thru the day from 2-1/2 to 4 hours apart a sensation of relief is experienced that was not felt a year ago, nor was the quantity as great a year ago. But I have to sleep with a quart can always to avoid wetting the bed which is a great annoyance and, naturally, keeps me wakeful during the night so that at no time do I have unbroken sleep.
The doctor says that it will take three or four more months before more complete relief will be obtained.
In the meantime, during the past six months or so I have dropped the violet ray treatment because it seemed to give no appreciable relief in any form. During this period I have taken 1/60th grain of strychnine as prescribed by Dr. Bechtell for the benefit of heart action and an iron tablet three times a day. I should add, the strychnine has been taken from three to five times a day.
My diet, necessarily, has been simple: consisting of a few vegetables and fruits and cereals with occasional milk and mush. We do not have meat more than two or three times a week - more eggs than meat, with now and then some cheap sea fish, such as we can afford. And I only eat twice a day, with frequent midnight lunches, light in character. My weight is 155 pounds which is way under normal for a man of 6 feet 2 inches, and lower than it has been for 40 years.
Walking exhausts me to such an extent that, frequently when I go down town to peddle books or do the marketing I have to rest somewhere every 50 or 100 feet before proceeding or it seems as tho I would faint away completely. Some days are worse than others. I spend from 10 to 14 hours in bed, or lying down; from three to four hours draining of the urine thru the day, all of which leaves little time for using my typewriter. In fact, before May 30 I have been unable to do any writing or anything in the way of desk work, so that my personal correspondence, much to my dismay, has accumulated to such proportions that it overwhelms me with discouragement when I contemplate it, so I try to avoid thinking about it.
The only writing that I have been enabled to keep up has been the 1600 words that I have to write for my Book Chat over the Radio once a week. Beginning with May 30 I have forced myself to do extra work every day, which has not been an easy task. The reading, scanning, or skimming the books that I have to include in the Book Chat, I can do while reclining in a morris chair, or in bed, so that that part of my work is comparatively easy.
For more than six months I have not been able to write anything for the local papers until this week when I have forced myself to write about 1000 words, for which I’m not paid in cash - only in theatre tickets which furnishes Mrs. […] with the only recreation she has. I cannot go because, during the past year, I have grown so deaf that I cannot hear anything so I stay away, and am satisfied with the reading I have to do for my recreation.
In checking up on my case I would like to have you look at the ears and see if there is anything that can be done to improve or restore my hearing. It is not only annoying but it impairs my ability to sell books over the phone and otherwise.
For the past month I have resumed some light calisthenics which, when able, I’ve taken in bed - under cover - before rising. The slightly renewed strength which I have noted during the past two or three weeks I attribute to the exercises, therefore I’m continuing them.
Unless I can regain my strength more rapidly and get relief from my other troubles in the near future I shall feel like throwing up the sponge and quitting and depart for the land beyond as soon as possible, for I cannot continue much longer to live at this half-dying rate. I do not care to remain and become a burden.
Within a few days I will select enough books from my psychic collection to square my membership for the past year and send them to you via parcel post. When I first appealed to you, just about a year ago, I sent you a blank that Miss [350] gave me which she said would cost me nothing, as that was a privilege she had. In return for her kindness I sent her an autographed copy of a book written by W. T. Stead which was worth $10, the price of my first examination, so that I do not owe for that. But I do owe you for the check-up and for the past year’s membership. In my present impoverished state I cannot pay money, as I have told you before, but I can pay in psychic books in which you might be interested.
There is no doubt in my mind that if you had not prescribed the use of the Elliott machine and I had not taken that treatment I would not be here today. In other words, you saved my life. But notwithstanding that fact, for which I’m more grateful than words can express, I would much prefer to square myself with you in books and, in order to do that, I would like to have you make your usual charge for the check-up some months ago and for the one which you have offered to make now. Then I can send what is required and square the face of the obligation, altho a man whose life has been saved for the time being can never square such an obligation.
To the best of my ability I have given you a complete description of the present situation and hope it may be of assistance to you in making the new check-up. Don’t forget to look at the ears. And if you will be utterly frank and candid with me and tell me whether there is any hope for recover, or whether there is no hope, I will be more grateful still.
Awaiting your reply with the hour of the appointment for the check-up, and with best wishes, gratitude, and kindest regards, I remain, your sick and much disheartened patient,
