This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Virginia, this 11th day of June, 1934, in accordance with request made by the brother, Mr. [315], Jr., Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

1. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [581].

2. Now, as we find, there are specific conditions that cause or produce the disorders in the functioning of the body. These, as we find, affect the locomotion, and are in the structural portions of the body.

3. These, then, are the conditions as we find them with this body, [581] we are speaking of:

4. The BLOOD SUPPLY indicates the inactivity of the body in some directions; that is, the PHYSICAL activity as related to that which has existed heretofore in the general abilities of the body to be more than active in its performance of the general reactions in the daily life.

5. In this relation we find there has been a strain upon the blood supply, through the inabilities of portions of the system to receive their proper quantity, or for the flow to be normal.

6. As we find, while the applications that have been made are helpful - or have been helpful in some directions, these are not wholly in accord with that which may make for the best conditions for the body.

7. While there has been in the structural portions a fractured vertebra in the lumbar area, the relief that has been taken off of some parts of the nerve cord - and thus not making the whole lower portion tense or inactive, the very nature of the condition has been more to the left than the right; though the injury was in the right portion of the vertebra itself - in the 2nd, yea 3rd lumbar vertebra itself.

8. This, as we find, would be the better application:

9. First we would have those treatments of the body, not only for the making of a shadowgraph for the purpose of indicating the specific conditions and positions that exist there but as to how and where the pressure should be exerted in the treatments of same for the better improvement of the body. This will not prevent there being some indications of a limp, but - as we find - if the corrections and the alignments are made properly, this will not be wholly an injury to incapacitate the body from physical locomotion or activity.

10. First, then, in the applications, we would X-Ray same. It will require also further treatments in this direction; not more than three to four should be necessary, to prevent the conditions from making adherence or allowing the breaking up in the cartilaginous forces or in the segmentations of the body to be rid of those conditions that tend to make for coagulation in the segment itself, see?

11. And then aligning the structural portion in its proper form.

12. And we would find, while it would not be the better to make same in a CAST, it would be better for it to be in a brace that would prevent its movement while there is being sufficient movement made with the manipulations to keep the adjustments in the proper place, see? And we would make the manipulations and adjustments OSTEOPATHICALLY, rather than chiropractically. This will also allow for the manipulations to be carried on in the lumbar plexus area, and to the limbs themselves, as to prevent an inflection of the blood supply as to cause a wasting away of the limb itself.

13. This we would do.

14. As to the diet and the activities, these will necessarily be limited until the resuscitating forces are applied.

15. Ready for questions.

16. (Q) What kind of brace would you suggest? (A) This will be rather a brace that would be prepared to hold the structural portion of the spinal column itself, and then with the bindings about same with the canvas or cloth as would hold same in position. It would be like splints on either side, of course very short ones, of the spine itself - on the area.

17. (Q) Who would you suggest to make these corrections properly? (A) One that has the facilities first of the X-Ray and the applications that would be necessary. Daley, or Day, or Dobbins, or Green [Charles S. Green, D.O.?], or any of these. MacGregor would be good.

R1. 6/23/34 Brother [315]‘s letter to EC:

I am in receipt of yours of June 13, 1934. I have received the reading of my brother and after reading same went to him and give him necessary information and had Dr. Dobbins take different xrays of is condition. He found pressure on one of the vertebraes and diagnosed it as arthritis after giving him some treatments. Since then the Department doctor has ordered him to be removed to the Montisiore hospital, Bronx, N.Y. in a semi private ward.

After consulting Dr. Dobbins of same, so that he can carry on the prescribed suggestion of the reading. I have had Dr. Dobbins keep in touch with me relative to the patient’s condition, he himself being interested in this case gave me his word that he would do his best in accordance with the reading, up until this time I have no further information.

R2. 7/18/34 “Relative to the rdg. given to me for my brother, seems I cannot get cooperation; therefore Dr. Dobbins and I just seem to be at standstill. This is really the first setback I have had and I’ll just wait.”

I saw Mr. [581] twice and then he had to report to a medical hospital for observation. We had some very good X-Rays taken of this man’s back but they failed to visualize any old fracture or abnormality in the lumbar region. This man has a spastic paralysis of both legs. With a fracture or dislocation you would expect a flaccid paralysis with diminution of all neurologic reflexes rather than an exaggeration of these reflexes. From my observation this condition would point more to some neurological disease as a multiple sclerosis or a brain or upper cord tumor. Would you please send me a report when Mr. Cayce makes a check reading.

Mr. [581] calls me up occasionally and keeps me informed about his condition as he is anxious to follow directions as given in the reading as soon as he is able. The brother [315] in … is very much interested.

I start on my vacation this week and shall not be back until after Labor Day. If there is any one that needs immediate attention if you will write me at Farmington, Maine, will refer them to someone that can take care of them until my return. If at any time you desire a detailed report on any case that I have taken care of let me know and I shall be glad to write it up for you.

B1. 5/28/34 Brother [315]‘s ltr.: “I would like to get a Physical Rdg. for my brother who seems to be in a pretty poor condition at the present time, thru an accident while in the line of duty as patrolman injured his spinal column so as to cause partial loss of the power of his legs. He has had continual chiropractic and tr. of daily massages.”

B2. 6/5/34 “Paralysis of lower part of body, unabling me to walk properly and keep my balance, entire lower part of body affected. I have lost control completely of my left leg.”
