This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 29th day of September, 1938, in accordance with request made by the self, through mother - Mrs. [379], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 11:00 to 11:05 A. M Eastern Standard Time. Washington, D.C.
-
GC: You will give the physical condition of this body at the present time, with suggestions for further corrective measures; answering the questions she has submitted, as I ask them.
-
EC: (In undertone - “There’s a block here in some way!” Long pause:)
-
Yes, this is getting rather serious. We don’t find the body but the impressions are that the conditions are NOT so well!
-
As we find, the disturbing conditions are rather acute. There is a spasmodic reaction of the lower portion of the epiglottis. This causes through the stomach area the inability of assimilation, causing a heaviness through portions of the lungs - or the lower part, or at the breast bone or the palate portion - such as to almost cut off the breath at times.
-
WE would have osteopathic ADJUSTMENTS made here, to correct those impingements in the cerebrospinal system that cause contractions in the area.
-
It is well for the time that there be rather the use of predigested foods and those that are very stimulating to the activity of the digestive system; such as gruels, heavy or whole wheat cooked cereals, egg and milk and spirits frumenti. All of such as these. Of course, plenty of citrus fruit juices - if remaining.
-
Then, make those corrections and set up better eliminations.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What doctor would be suggested to make these corrections? (A) One in sympathy with the Work, as well as a good osteopath.
-
(Q) Are climatic conditions in Washington, D.C., agreeable to my body? (A) These are NOT so much the disturbance as the subluxation, as we find, in the cardiac area of the cerebro-spinal system - or the areas that govern the epiglottis and the cardiac portion.
-
(Q) What has caused me to lose weight? (A) Lack of assimilations.
-
(Q) Is smoking bad for my body? (A) For this body, smoking is VERY bad.
-
(Q) Is there any patent medicine that would be a good body builder for me? (A) It’s not “patent” but the Codiron would be MOST beneficial for the body; two tablets morning and evening - these are preferably taken while taking the meal.
Of course, only have semi-liquids until the full corrections are made. But do not even then have fried foods so much.
- We are through with this Reading.

(GD’s note to Mrs. [379]: We would suggest that you send the Reading and have [649] go to: Dr. Lulu Irene Waters, 1707 Columbia Rd., Washington, D.C., who is a good Osteopath and who has given us reports on several cases followed according to Reading suggestions.
Codiron is manufactured by The Lawrence Laboratories, Chicago, Ill. It comes in tablet form and sells for $1 a bottle. Our Meredith Drug Co. at Virginia Beach expects a supply of it this week-end, as they’ve ordered some. You may save time by having it sent from here.)

R1. 11/12/38 [649]‘s letter:
… Ave. N.W., Washington, D.C.
Dear Gladys,
This is some thing I have been intending to do for a long time. I am enclosing five dollars, and will send the rest later on.
Have you met Dr. Waters? I think she is real nice. I’ve been to her a couple of times and am going again Tuesday. As to my anemic condition, she said I had improved much more than she thought I would. It jumped from 60 to 75 in two weeks if you know what that is. I had also gained two pounds. I’ve been taking the Codiron and drinking milk and eating eggs & oatmeal for breakfast. That’s as close as I have been able to follow the diet. Also, the spirits frumenti. That is the easiest part. The eggs make me sick, but I’ve eaten them just the same. I don’t think there is anything worse than eggs for breakfast. I managed to cut down on the smoking, but haven’t been able to give it up. Do you think it is so terribly bad for me? Dr. Waters said if I didn’t smoke too much it wouldn’t be so very harmful.
She also told me my backbone was twisted, which explained why my legs are different lengths. Also, why I have such terrible cramps. She thought she had straightened them out enough so I wouldn’t be bothered, but I had the cramps just the same.
Gladys, she almost kills me. The first time I went I was sore for days. When she told me she weighed exactly 100 pounds more than I did, I wanted to sneak out. I felt that was no place for me.
She gave me a good talking to about following the reading. Probably thought I had it just out of curiosity. I suppose I feel better. Everyone says I certainly look better. But I still feel tired.
Mama told me Mr. Cayce had been sick. I was sorry to hear that and hope he is feeling better now.
I’ve heard tales as how Hugh Lynn is going to Duke along with Edgar Evans. Running some competition into the family?
If you ever get the chance, write to me and let me know how you all are. I know you are kept pretty busy, but I would like to hear from you.
Love, [649]
Give my love to Mr. & Mrs. Cayce.
R2. 11/18/38 Ltr. to [649]:
Dearest [649]:-
Thanks so much for your letter and the enclosure. We ALL appreciated hearing from you, and each one read your letter with interest.
You must need those corrections very badly, or they wouldn’t hurt so much. I’m glad you like Dr. Waters. We have never met her. It’s funny, her telling YOU about following the Readings!
I’m hoping you can be home for Thanksgiving OR/AND Christmas, and that we may see you. It seems ages!
Hugh Lynn didn’t go to school, but is in New York. He will be home today, for a week, to get out some Bulletins, announcements, etc. You will be interested, I’m sure, to know that he is going on the radio - presenting “Mysteries of the Mind.” You will receive a notice soon; so be sure to “tune in” and write the station. It apparently is just what we’ve been waiting for. The program starts the 4th of Dec., Sunday afternoon at 2:30, over WOR. But you will get details later. He has a 14 weeks engagement.
Did Mrs. [379] write you Mrs. [1648]‘s address? She is Librarian at the College of …, … Rd. I think you would enjoy visiting with her when you have a chance. She was here last summer and had a Life Reading - is SO interested in the Work and the spiritual end of it - (Is there really any other end to it, after all). Also I’d like for you to know Mrs. [678], you could phone her sometime. She is Mrs. [264]‘s sister. Mrs. [678], … Ave. I think you’d like her. Also I asked our friend [826] to get in touch with you. Has he ever shown up? Heaps of love. Gladys

INDIVIDUAL CASE REPORT
Date of Reading Sept. 29, 1938 Case No. [649-4]
PLEASE ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS CAREFULLY
(1) In your opinion did the analysis of the Readings cover the condition?
Yes; all that was bothering me at the time.
(2) Give symptoms of condition described correctly?
A quickening of breaths - anemia - a pain through the lower lungs.
(3) What was the physician’s analysis of this condition?
Dr. Waters, an osteopath, gave the same analysis of the conditions that she was capable of treatment.
(4) Have the suggestions given in the Reading been followed exactly as outlined?
No, not entirely. I took the medicines for a while & went to an osteopath. I did not go on as strict a diet as suggested.
(5) For how long?
(6) Describe the extent to which improvements have resulted?
Since I didn’t follow the reading entirely, it is hard to say. I have gained a little of the weight I lost and have a little more pep.
(7) Comment.

Name Miss [649]
(1a) Did the Reading presented to you describe the condition of the patient? (b) Explain any variation. (c) Give technical diagnosis.
(b) As I remember it yes. Miss [649] took her reading with her when she went to Baltimore, Md.
(c) I do not remember without her record.
(d) I found very poor posture - a twist in the pelvis-sacro-iliac lesion right hip. The tonsils were bad. Heart O.K. Blood pressure normal pulse too rapid - but it came to normal. She was very anemic.
(2) Were the suggestions for treatment in your opinion proper for this condition?
We followed your instructions carefully as I always have done. In every case you have sent to me I have always gotten good results. She took ‘Lextron’ by Lilly to bring up hemoglobin.
(3) For what period of time has the patient followed directions given in the Reading under your care?
Miss [649] came to me Oct. 14, 1938, Oct. 28, Nov. 15 - Dec. 13, 1939, June 10 - Feb. 8 - March 7 - then she moved to Baltimore, Md.
(4) What results have you observed?
The skin which was a very bad color cleared up very much. Patient became stronger and overcome her colds.
(5) Comment. The patient was much better when she left here. I cannot give a better report as I do not have your record. However I can truthfully say, I have always found your readings very helpful in diagnosis.
Date Sept. 16, 1940 Signed LuLu Irene Waters, D.O.
(We will appreciate it if you will include a technical analysis of your findings.)
R5. 9/15/44 Miss [649]‘s letter to Gladys:
… N.W., Washington 8, D.C.
Dear Gladys, and Mr. Cayce,-
Have been intending to write for quite some time, but I have been rather busy - the hours I work are not conducive to writing letters.
Mama tells me Mr. Cayce is away now - taking a much-needed rest. I do hope he is taking it easy.
With the best intentions in the world, I am sure we all put off writing letters until we need help. Which happens to be my case now. You see - I would like to have a health reading. There is no particular rush about it.
A couple of weeks ago my foot ached so much I couldn’t walk on it - at first I thought it was a fallen arch, but the doctor said it was arthritis - which is probably correct as I have other aches, too, in my joints. My foot is well enough now to walk all right, but it still hurts some. So, I would like to find out what to do.
Also, Gladys - if I told you what I wanted to know, would you word the questions for me? I always seem to ask them the wrong way, or something. I was told once before there was a lack of assimilation (?) - I believe in the joints - but I have never been in a position where I could really follow the readings. I’ve done the best I could, under the circumstances - but it is not easy away from home and working. I am not even sure I will be able to follow this one, but I have more opportunity now and will certainly try.
The things I want to know:
- What causes the aches - and what treatment?
- Should my tonsils be taken out? Are they causing the infection?
- Would it be advisable to take osteopathic treatments again to get my back straightened out? (I did this once, as suggested - and after I had it straight - about 6 mo. later - I picked up a child - and it all slipped back again. I can’t help but wonder how much harm it does me this way, aside from some more aches occasionally.)
I can’t think of anything else - unless you can, with what I have told you. Except, of course - for the super - question. Would it be advisable for me to try to go overseas within the next year? Unless you think this would be rather a foolish question. Just recently I have started thinking about it and the idea appeals to me. But I don’t know if I should or not. Don’t ask it if you think you shouldn’t.
Which reminds me - do you ever hear from Mrs. [585]? I know [308] was advised to go into diplomatic service, and it seems to be that now would be a good time. The State Dept. is sending out quite a few girls. I don’t know how old [308] is - or how old the State Dept. requires them to be - but she could get in touch with them and find out. I believe a letter addressed to the Foreign Service Branch would do. Also, I believe she should enclose a form “57” - which she can get from a Post Office or a Civil Service Office. It isn’t the proper form but they will send her another if they are interested.
When you let me know when Mr. Cayce can give the reading, I will send you a check. No doubt I will be at work at the time - and the address here is rather difficult. It is the Army War College, building T-5 (T for temporary) room 214. The college grounds start at 4th & P Streets, S.W. - but the building I am in is almost a mile from there.
Please give my best regards to the “folks”. If you don’t have time to write, you could give mama the information.
Thanks a lot. Sincerely, [649]
R6. 9/18/44 Form letter was sent, making her appointment for 5/31/45/. EC died on 1/3/45.
R7. 8/6/47 Came home from Washington Aug. 1947, suffering with PLEURISY; is going to rest up a month, hoping to get better. Very anemic, underweight; doctors giving her all sorts of vitamin tablets, etc., tell her just to rest. Hasn’t been to an osteopath yet. I told her to go to a D.O. Her mother copied out information from Case [2611], Physical Rdg., re: Calcios, inhalant, etc., to see if it would help her; is going to try to persuade her to go to a D.O. in Norfolk while here. GD.

B1. See 649-3 on 7/7/37 giving health information.
B2. Phone request by mother, 9/28 & 9/29/38: “[649] was home over Labor Day and looked terrible! I had a letter from her today saying that she was going to write Mr. Cayce for a Check Physical. I thought I’d better call up and be sure about an appointment, as someone said you might be going away to New York. I thought if you could give me the time, I would get in touch with [649]. The people with whom she is living are not in sympathy with the Work and she’d rather they not know about it, as it would make it hard for her to follow the treatments; besides, perhaps influence the Reading itself. Tomorrow morning? I’ll call [649] tonight, then phone you in the morning and give the questions.”
Next morning: “Gladys, [649] wasn’t at home, but I left the message in such a way that I’m sure she will understand… I told them to tell her that what we had been discussing would take place at ten-thirty today. So I’m sure she will understand. And I’m sure she will go on to work as usual and just bear the Reading in mind, but in case she DOES stay home…or think we mean for her to stay home for the appointment, I’d better give both addresses…in case there is a mix-up. Her home address is: …, Washington, D.C. I’m pretty sure she will be at work, tho. If anything should be done immediately, phone me and I will get in touch with her. If nothing immediate, just mail the Reading to me and I will relay the information to her. Thank you all so much.”
