This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at The Oakland, 2006 Columbia Road, Apt. 40, Washington, D.C., this 6th day of October, 1934, in accordance with request made by the self, through the sister, Miss […], new Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Mrs. [678].

1. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [680].

2. Now, as we find, disturbing conditions that prevent the better physical functioning of the body are affecting the mucous membranes of the head, the throat and the general reactions are to the nervous system.

3. These, then, are the conditions as we find them with this body, [680].

4. The BLOOD SUPPLY, as we find, has been and is - it might be said - in a state of destroying much of the hemoglobins in itself. Hence being attacked, as it were, through the circulations in various portions of the body, has made for a depletion in the vitality of the system. And with the depletion and with this humor, as it may be called, in activative forces through the portions of the body that receive the impulse for reaction in the nerve ganglia, makes for this high state of nervous tension by the very act or fact of the relationships or laxness in the ganglia. For it makes for impulses in varied directions, preventing the proper coagulations in portions of the system. But having become involved, it makes throughout the rest of the system a state or condition of over-expectancy, so that the reaction to the organs is to become overactive at times, as in the digestion, in the eliminations, the activities of the kidneys, and all of these reactions that are of the nature that are affected by these conditions.

5. As to the NERVOUS SYSTEM, as has been indicated, this is rather the effect than the cause, though the causes in activity in organs to excessiveness are the result of the exercising of the conditions in the nerve system, or the incoordination between the sympathetic and cerebrospinal.

6. The basis of the condition arises from a mild condition first of catarrhal nature, and then the poisons from same - the applications made in the soft tissue of head, ear, nose, cavities of the portions of the system; and has gradually grown to these conditions.

7. Their effect upon the ORGANS is as indicated.

8. As we find, in meeting the needs of the conditions, while it has been necessary for the use of those properties at times that may make for the quieting effects in the forms of the hypnotics and narcotics, that are more in the bromide nature, these will of necessity have to be diminished gradually - but there should be the stimulation that will aid in supplying to the system’s activity that need for the ability to be replenished; and we would prepare a compound for same.

9. First, though, we would begin with the use of the excessive heat through the applications of the Elliott Appliance for the antrum, the nasal passages, that would be gradually built up to where this activity will make for the destroying of poisons and producing of a circulation that is not affected by the conditions or poisons that have so racked the body. These treatments would be given every day for the first ten days, you see; then they may be made for shorter periods three times a week for the next ten days, and then once a week for the next ten days or two weeks.

10. And the body should be well!

11. While the above treatments are being given, we would take a compound prepared in this manner:

12. To 2 ounces of Essence of Lactated Pepsin, add:

Tincture of Stillingia…1/2 ounce, Elixir of Calisaya…1/2 ounce, Tincture of Valerian…1/4 ounce, Ipecac, or Essence of Ipecac…20 minims.

Shake the solution together before the dosage would be taken, which would be half a teaspoonful in water three to four times a day; yet gradually diminished.

13. It would be well also that the high colonic irrigations be given to remove refuse forces from the whole of the colon area; occasionally, not too often. For, as has been indicated, there has been an excess at times of activities through the actions of the lymph circulation through the portions of the system, owing to the nervous tension. We would give, after the other applications and treatments have been begun, one irrigation the first week; then let at least two weeks pass before another would be given. Three to four should be sufficient, depending upon the eliminations.

14. We would also use the Radio-Active Appliance of the plain type, attached to the body at least one hour each day; though it may be divided into two periods, but this will make for equalizing the circulation and making a balancing of the activities in the system.

15. In the matter of the diet, use those foods that make for the greater nourishment to the blood and nervous system; those properties in Vitamin A are the most helpful in creating for this body the necessary influences; as the extract from the halibut liver, or the cod liver - though the halibut is the better, as it has more of the vitamins necessary for the strengthening. The White’s Cod Liver Oil tablets may be taken, which carry also the other properties. These, as we find, with a well-balanced diet, should bring for this body, [680], a near normal condition in eight to ten weeks.

16. The body should be out in the open, so that the recuperation will be more of a decided and a permanent condition.

17. Ready for questions.

18. (Q) Describe how and for how long the Elliott treatment should be given each time. (A) This, to be sure, necessitates the application through the use of the Elliott machine, which is to apply the heat to the affected portions in the soft tissue of the nasal, the throat, the head, the face cavities, by the insertion of those tubes that allow the carrying of this. The application would be made each day, beginning with about twenty minutes; gradually increase until it would be an hour, toward the latter part of the first ten days treatments - then it would be an hour about three to four times a week.

19. (Q) Can these treatments be obtained in Washington? (A) The associations may be made for obtaining them in Washington.

20. (Q) Would you recommend the continuance of the high frequency electrical treatments? (A) As we find, these are the conditions produced by the high frequency: The excess of the urea in the blood supply, that is necessary where the system is required to produce this for the creating of coagulation, is broken up by the high frequency. At TIMES it is very helpful and quieting; at others it excites the nervous system more. If these treatments as suggested are begun, as we have given, we would leave off the high frequency; for the application of the Radio-Active is just the opposite end of electrical forces which create that which is the BASIS of life. For while electrical forces are life in its activity, in man - save where they are to destroy the plasms that work upon the body itself - they are more helpful in the low form, than the high form.

21. (Q) Would you recommend the continuance of the diathermy treatments? (A) Diathermy would be more helpful AFTER these treatments than with the treatments. We would discontinue with the beginning of the above described applications, and when the body is able to be more in the open - to depend upon its activities of itself - these may be taken occasionally to rid the system of those necessary forces.

22. (Q) Could the body obtain the colonic irrigations at home properly? (A) Could obtain them at home if given by one that understands the situation! for with one who understands it may be done any place. Best that these be done in a place where they are understood!

Do these things and, as we find, we will bring for this body, [680], normal conditions.

23. We are through for the present.

R1. 10/6/34 EC’s letter to Dr. I. Daniel Shorell: “We have had occasion here to offer suggestion for use of the Elliott machine in treating sinus trouble for a Mr. [680], whose sister has already communicated with you. I understand there are 2 physicians here who give the Elliott treatment - Dr. Gans and Dr. Gordon, but they have different types of machines, we are told, and neither have given the sinus treatment with this machine. Would you be kind enough to write, giving any information as to who makes the Elliott machine that you are presenting or how the sinus treatments might be obtained for this patient her to: Mrs. [678] … Apt. 40, Washington, D.C. Mrs [678] is a nurse and is very much interested in this case…”

R2. 10/27/34 EC’s ltr. to Mr. [680]:

I hope you are feeling quite a bit more optimistic. I know you have some hard lines to deal with, but possibly this disorder has come about that you may learn yourself a little bit of patience, for you are realizing more and more each day that those about you must have a great deal of patience and fortitude to minister to your needs at this time. It also gives those about you an opportunity to show their conception of Divine helpfulness, the love influence that may be in their lives when it finds manifestation in doing something for others.

I hope that you have had a communication from Dr. Shorell before this, and that they have been able to get some one of the specialists and to make application of the instrument, as was suggested in your case. I want you to know that we feel a very personal interest and quite a bit of responsibility in your particular case, and are believing that when you are able to get all of these things together and use them in a consistent way and manner you are going to find a help that you haven’t heretofore felt was possible. This has been the experience in thousands of cases that have sought relief through these channels, and there is no reason why it shouldn’t be your experience.

I want you to let us hear from you, whether it is to question us about anything, ask our advice about anything, or whatever you feel prompted to say.

I haven’t as yet gotten off to New York. When I am there I am going to get in touch with this man who I know is making application of these treatments for this particular disorder, and I will write you then just what his experience has been in cases somewhat similar to yours.

R3. 12/15/34 Letter from Mrs. [264] to EC: ”…Mr. [680] is still having the time of his life getting that Elliott machine. It does look like Dr. Shorell would answer a letter about it. Please give us his address again. We must have been writing to the wrong address. Mr. […] wants to know if there would be a place for him to room and board at reasonable price near enough to Dr. Shorell’s office for him to go and get the treatments, and he wants to know how much he would have to pay for the treatments and if they could be arranged on terms as his sister gets a small salary. If you could give us any help on either of the above questions, I’d be so glad…”

R4. 12/21/34 EC’s letter to Mrs. [264]:

I do not understand just why you haven’t been able to hear from Dr. Shorell about Mr. [680]‘s treatments. As I tried to tell in my last letter to you, or instructions given to Mildred to write, we have found by being in his office and seeing the treatments that he gives, that the antrum attachment for the Elliott machine is not a common thing with the physicians. Dr. Shorell is possibly the only one that is making a specialty of the antrum treatment. That is why you have not been able to get the treatment given by any other doctor. He has been making his experiments and investigation with it for the last three to four years, and has developed it himself. Now, for Mr. [680] to get the treatments it would necessitate his being there for some three to to four weeks, at least. He could make arrangements in New York, as you very well know, to stay at most any priced place he would like. He might stay in a small hotel near Dr. Shorell’s office, and it not cost him more than 8 or 10 a week for his room - and his meals what he wanted them to be. I do not know the cost of Dr. Shorell’s treatments, but I feel sure he could make arrangements in almost any way that he desires. I do hope he can arrange to do that, for I feel sure he can get relief with that treatment. Dr. Shorell’s address is 320 Park Avenue, on the ground floor, and is very easy to get to.

R5. 1/30/35 Mr. [680]‘s sister’s letter to EC in Washington, D.C.:

The only place he could get the Elliott treatment as you said, was in New York City and since this was impossible, on account of his condition and the attendant expense, the reading has not been beneficial in any way, so I do hope in view of this you will be fair enough to return the fee of $10 which was charged. I am sorry to have to view the matter in this way, but I hope you too will see it in this fair way.

My expenses are more than I can take care of, as my brother is taking treatments now from a physician here, which I hope in time will help him.

P.S. Dr. Moffett, whom Miss [678] knows, said he did [not find?] any sinus involvement.

R6. 2/17/1935 Ltr. to EC from Hugh Lynn:

I’m enclosing a letter from Miss […]. I understand that this is not the proper way to handle it, and that we shouldn’t return anything; but I’m going to ask that you send by return mail an Ass’n check for 10 to Miss [...]. She has caused a good deal of trouble by telephoning, and is now trying to get - or has a doctor or two to say he never had any sinus trouble (her brother). So, the best way is to just write her and tell her that I had referred the matter to the members of the Board of the Ass'n, and you as the Manager were returning 10 to her. Now, please do that at once - for she’ll be phoning again tomorrow.

R7. 2/18/35 HLC’s letter to Mr. [680]‘s sister:

Your communication of January 30th addressed to Mr. Edgar Cayce was referred to the Membership and Reading Committee of the Association.

We were very sorry to learn that you have been unable to secure the treatments recommended for your brother. As I am sure you understood at the time you took out a membership in the Association the fee which you paid was paid to the organization and not to Mr. Cayce. It covered the expenses involved in securing the reading and did not represent a payment for any information you received. As a member you undertook with us an experiment. We can only point to hundreds of instances where individuals have received help from following the suggestions given and reaffirm our belief that you too would have been able to secure similar results if you had followed the suggestions.

Mr. Cayce nor the Association are under no obligations to return your membership fee, but we are seeking to aid individuals not hurt them. We have served many, we hope to continue to serve. I have personally explained your position to the committee and in view of the circumstances we have authorized that a refund be sent you.

May I take this opportunity of expressing my deep regret that you were unable to obtain the treatment. I hope that your brother will obtain relief. If at any time in the future we are able to be of service please call on us.
