Time of Reading Albion Shore Hotel, 4:30 to 4:40 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. Chicago, Ill. (Body & enquiring mind. Inasmuch as there appears no chance of his being taken on at the Western Union in the near future, what is the advice that would be given under the existent circumstances?)

1. EC: We have the body, the enquiring mind, [78], this we have had before.

2. Now, as we find, through the conditions or surroundings, as we have given, there may be the approach of the body [78], to the Western Union and those associated or connected with same, that would be well at this time - in connection with Weisburgh and his boxes, or coolers, that he has attempted to place with the various offices of the Western Union company.

3. Hence at this time we would, for the moment, approach through this channel; using the association and connection for the advancement in the activities in the immediate future.

4. Do that.

5. (Q) Is Herbert Weisburgh the one meant? (A) “Red.” Yes, Herbert.

6. (Q) Is it meant that he should sell the coolers, or try to sell - (A) SELL the coolers - don’t just try - to the Western Union, through the connections that he has; for or in association with Weisburgh. Be a nice order in the first!

7. (Q) Who should he approach in the Western Union? (A) He HAS all the connections in the Western Union!

8. (Q) Is there any other advice for [78] at this time? (A) Do this right now, and as there is put forth that which is of help, aid, or the attempt to carry on, there may be assistance given in the various directions.

9. We are through for the present.

R1. 6/2/33 Letter: “The situation here is hopeless. The men you referred me to were cordial enough and apparently wanted to help me, but couldn’t…”

R2. 9/3/33 Letter: “I can’t help but feel that somewhere the fault is mine. In particular do I feel the failure in Chicago was due to my own ignorance in some way. You have proven many times that I have only to call on you to receive that advice and guidance that has so often helped me out of the mire. I realize that you must have hundreds of similar cases and that I have no monopoly on trouble, yet I do want and need the assistance that you alone can give.”

R3. 9/12/33 Letter submitted questions: “Also I’d like to familiarize you with the conditions that face me and the importance of the questions in regard to the conditions. As you know, I have been without a job for more than a year. The only exception to this was three weeks work in a filling station in Missouri for which I received no pay and an equal length of service in training for a clerkship in a Chicago hotel for which I received nothing.

“Miss [W…] and I have longed to be married for the past seven years and have never found it possible. A short time ago her father, while ostensibly trying to help me (he owned the filling station) told [W…] that I was no good, she was wasting her life on me, etc. Deeply hurt, she left home and we hoped to find work with my Dad - [GD’s memo: [78]‘s dad owned a wood working shop.] but he hasn’t work enough for himself. Since then she has been living with her maternal grandmother in …, Ky. Also she was head of the … dept. in … College and pressure was brought to bear on her because of me and she resigned her position. Understand, I suggested that she do none of these things and although I may be considered indirectly responsible for her predicament I am not directly responsible. I have tried everywhere to find a job without success.

“Naturally, in the face of such disappointments and suffering we both wonder if we shouldn’t forget the whole thing as best we can. For my part I’ve brought her nothing but unhappiness and suffering because of my inability to find work to take her away from all the things that have wronged her. For her part she thinks she is a burden and handicap to me…

“If you will help me to find some peace and a normal life out of this chaos I shall be eternally grateful.”
