1. EC: Yes, we have the entity and those relations with the universe and universal forces, that are latent and manifested in the records of the entity now known as [813].

2. Then, in interpreting that which has been builded by this entity in the records given, well that the approach of same be understood by the entity, that those experiences in the earth which produce emotional urges in the present may - in their application - be used as stepping-stones for greater achievements by the entity in the present; also the universal forces that are manifested in the activities of each soul (as the entity is a portion, a unit of the whole) through its sojourns or experiences other than in the material plane - or in those environs that are accorded by the ancients and accredited as having their influence upon same. And when a soul or entity has builded in a material experience, then, an activity of the nature that by words is accredited to it, in that environ may it have its consciousness - even as all are aware of those environs and activities in materiality in the earth.

3. Hence from the astrological sojourns the urge comes innately, while from the earthly sojourns it is rather emotional; thus making what may be said to be a counterpart of same in materiality - hereditary and environmental influence.

4. In the astrological aspects, we find:

The entity coming from the Mercurian influences, or the high mental abilities, there are the innate urges of analyzing - or delving into the causes and the effects of that within each influence which the entity may contact; as to what makes or causes or produces such reactions in the affairs of individuals or groups or nations.

6. The Jupiterian influence makes for rather a peculiar aspect, owing to the entity’s sojourn and activity in same; for to many who had periods of sojourn in its environment it becomes a benevolent influence, but to this entity it becomes rather as the period of expansion, the period of the new awakenings.

7. Also the environs from that activity of the entity in Neptune bring those experiences from afar, or from messages that may be in transmission not only by material things but those that may come through as upon the etheronic energies of the SOURCES of energy. Thus the entity gains much that becomes the motivative force in its MENTAL activity, as well as in its associations and relations with others. These will make for, too, that elemental force having its effect upon the entity in the form of waters; or large bodies of water have their peculiar effect upon the entity. And those things dealing whether within, through communicative forces from without, or the activities of a commercial nature, or such environs, play - as it were - a great part in the experience and in the affairs from the material angle in the experience of the entity.

8. These are as the greater influences or sojourns from the astrological influence, and combined they produce these as urges in the entity at present - but irrespective of what the will does about such:

One of high mental abilities, with the INNATE ability to analyze motivative forces - whether consciously or unconsciously in the affairs of others; bringing to self through same at times greater knowledge of the experiences of others, especially of those individuals recently having been upon bodies of water, over bodies of water or dealing with those elements that have to do with such activity.

10. Then, these are the influences brought actively in the present from former experiences of the entity in the earth; not ALL, but those that have their influence upon the present experience of the entity in the earth, from what the entity has done about and with the creative forces that manifest themselves through mental, material and spiritual forces of the body itself:

11. Before this we find the entity lived in the earth during the periods of the early sojourns of peoples as a nation, and as a group, in the land of the entity’s present nativity; during those periods when the peoples sought their religious and spiritual freedom of activity.

12. The entity then in the early portion of its activity was among those that came to that particular land now known as the Quaker or Pennsylvanian land. There the entity was among those of the Netherland people, in the name Neureindern, that came seeking for the advancement of the mental abilities as well as the freedom of speech, the freedom of activity in the relationships of individuals with their fellow man, as the expression of that which man would worship in that called his God. Thus did the entity come, and made for aidments to those during the early portion of such activity in that land; suffering hardships, many, in the material plane yet gaining in the mental and in the spiritual welfare; for there was put into effect materially by the entity’s activities and associations with others those tenets that could only be tenets under the normal environment. As the entity grew into material manhood and into those effective activities in the land, the associations made for greater and greater opportunities for the application of those tenets that were near and dear to the entity throughout the sojourn.

13. Hence the entity gained much during that sojourn, and there may be found even in the older of the records in the ‘city of brotherly love’ much that may pertain to the activities of the entity during that experience.

14. In the present we find these as the innate urges that express themselves through the emotions of the entity: There is the urge to be easily touched by oppression in any individual activity or group; and the general feeling in self is to resent oppression in any manner; taking - as it were, in common parlance - the side of the “under dog” in any circumstance that may arise in the experience of self or those with whom the entity may be associated. Also there are those expressions oft within the self innately that each soul must give the account in itself of the cause of its own activity, of its own relationships to that which it would worship as its divine cause, or that to which it innately and within self would attain as being the motivative force in its activity.

15. Before that we find the entity was in those lands now known as the Grecian, during the periods when there were the many teachers that arose as the servant class that would delve or study into the research for those that sought or desired enlightenment.

16. The entity was then in the household of one Octavia [?] that made for collaborations with those peoples during that period of sojourn when those now better known records of that day were a portion of the activity.

17. During that sojourn the entity had one experience which has oft in its inner self made for an almost turning back to that experience in times, that of delving into the inner records that were made in the old Alexandrian libraries. There the entity gained much that Plato, Aristotle and the old writers of the period gained from that which was supplied by the entity in its research for those that presented same to their fellows in their varied activities.

18. In the name then Ilidoen, the entity ever had those innate feelings of lack of opportunity for self-expression, being ever - as it were - in the material manner as controlled not so much in thought as in manner of giving expression of same that the fellow man might have the greater advantage of that which had been the experiences of the sages of those ages long passed, but that had been preserved in the records of the manuscripts or the papyrus or those stones that had been preserved there - which were later so ruthlessly destroyed by those that would impose their OWN interpretations of the past upon the coming peoples.

19. The entity gained and lost during that sojourn from the spiritual standpoint, GAINED in the material and the mental self; and the great abilities in the analytical temperament, the analyzing of motives, arise from the sojourn and the experience of the entity there - especially in its activities in that particular portion of the land and in its attempt to make those reports for those that sought to force those researchings and those searching out of the reports of old.

20. In the present we find that innate delving into the unseen, into the inner forces that have caused ways and manners in which individual minds have accomplished those things and experiences within their inner self; and make for the abilities in self in the present to gain much from unseen force, unseen activities that come as the conscious and unconscious urge in the inner self.

21. Before that we find the entity was in that land now known as the Indian, and about those places where there was the setting up of the activities of the Princess of Egypt upon her return to the Indian land, when there had been the studies of those activities of the teacher in the hills and in the plains. And the entity was of that environ, and those surroundings; when that Princess of Egypt had come from the Egyptian activity to bring about those of her own sex the teachings that made for her people a greater understanding of how there might be applied same in the experience of body by living, by that as it assimilated from the material things in a body, such as to become a portion of the mental, the physical and the soul body of each individual.

22. The entity gained with that Princess throughout its sojourn in that land now known as Poona, in the Indian land, where there were not only the healings of the body, the healings of the mental forces, but a great spiritual uplift.

23. And in the present the entity finds the interest in those things in form, in manner, in way of movement of body, of assimilation of influences and forces from without that are a portion of its innate self to acquire or attain an understanding within self. These are a portion of the entity’s inner self, INNATELY built upon the soul, finding their expressions in the emotions that may awaken for the entity those experiences. For, as the entity gained in that experience, so does it experience in the present that only through application of experience may any tenet, any law, any truth become a portion of the whole being of an individual or entity.

24. Before that we find the entity was in that called or known as the Atlantean land, during the periods when there was much turmoil and strife from the rejections by many of those laws and tenets of One; when the upheavals began that made for the egress of many from that city of the Poseidon land - or in Poseidia the entity dwelt among those where there was the storage, as it were, of the MOTIVATIVE forces in nature from the great crystals that so condensed the lights, the forms, the activities, as to guide not only the ship upon the bosom of the sea but in the air and in many of those now known conveniences for man as in the transmission of the body, as in the transmission of the voice, as in the recording of those activities in what is soon to become a practical thing in so creating the vibrations as to make for television - as it is termed in the present.

25. The entity then was among the princesses that served the peoples not only of high but of low estate in that particular period of activity in the land. Hence we find with those turmoils that came from without, as the voices of those were raised against those in authority that controlled those activities for their own self-gratification, there were brought trials to the entity and those about same; yet the entity remained true to all of its activities, not deeming it as other than a duty, a duty of love and of service for its fellow man that those powers and the influences of the infinite might be a portion. And though the entity saw much of this turned into self-indulgences, it never became in that experience a portion of the entity’s activities; in the name then Ambeno.

26. As to the abilities of the entity in the present and that to which it may attain, and how:

27. It may be seen from the material or earthly sojourns, as also from its astrological influences and applications, that the greater turning within - through its own analyses of those motivative forces that make for the law of One - will bring for itself, for its fellows, the greater harmony and peace and understanding. Also tones, colors, stones of peculiar type or turn, mean much to the entity. And not as an omen, but for its greater vibration, the entity should have upon its body at all periods the blue-green chalcedony.

28. In the application of self, in the study and meditation from within, there may be brought to self in its deeper meditations much of that which was experienced in Alexandria. For much that was seen there, that has been lost to many, needs to be interpreted to men. Through thine own hand, through thine own activity then, my child, there may come much of that as thou readest there.

My dear Mr. Cayce:

It was a delightful surprise to receive your recent letter. I would have answered it at once if I could have found a little spare time in which to do so. You know the activities of Congress usually reach their peak about this time of the year and we are extremely busy in our office. Today I am allowing the stack of official correspondence here at my elbow to wait awhile until I write this letter.

I regret that I found it impossible to attend a meeting of one of the Groups of the Association while you were here, but the multiplicity of things to be done at that time effectively prevented me from being present. I have had to abandon the idea of participating in the activities of a local group - for awhile at least - since I can’t find the time for it. Nevertheless, I am interested and will keep in touch with the Association and lend any assistance that it is possible for me to do. I am, and have been for several years, studying the ancient Vedic scriptures under the the able guidance of Bramachari Jotin (he is really a Swami but hasn’t as yet taken the vows of a Swami because of his mother’s objections). With two evenings a week devoted to the Yogoda or Self-Realization Fellowship Society [See Source File Key #813 for newspaper article concerning the Self-Realization Fellowship re 813-1], and several others spent in necessary study, there is very little time left for other activities.

The reading is a very great benefit. This knowledge came when I was ready for it and when I needed it. So wonderful are His laws! I never cease to marvel at perfect way the higher laws function. Each day I have sent you my gratitude for this latest blessing, - knowledge of the place where I stand on the Way.

If you have any information about the periods mentioned in my reading, of course, I would like to have it. The two periods in which I am interested are the period when the teachers of Greece were of the servant class (about 300 B.C. to 100 A.D. I think) and the period of the Princess of Egypt who returned to India with the teachings of the ancient Egyptians. It is this latter period that I am keenly interested in. It is very difficult to get anything in English about ancient Hindu history. In fact, it is very difficult to get anything at all about ancient Hindu history I am told. The great Hindu teachers were so selfless that they wanted only their teachings to be known, not their personalities. You have a copy of my reading so you will know the periods to which I refer.

R3. 7/30/35 Letter reporting on sister Mrs. [890]‘s rdg. on health; then:

A week or two ago I read a book entitled, “Our Atlantis” written by Dr. Phelon in 1903. In this book he relates a journey by steamer in company with one of the Hermetic Brotherhood. They left their ship in a row boat in the vicinity of the West Indies and rowed to what appeared to be a rocky island, but upon landing was found to the the observatory tower of the Great Temple of Atlantis which is now rising above the sea because Atlantis is rising. He said the tower was about 150 feet in circumference, cup shaped in the center, built of masonry so perfectly and solidly as to defy thus far the fierce action of the most erosive forces of nature - and the floor was laid in regular flagging. He also said that the Brother took a record of Atlantis from an inner chamber of the tower. This was their mission in visiting the Temple observatory.

In my Life Reading which you gave me in February I was instructed to wear a blue-green chalcedony stone for greater vibration. Well, there doesn’t seem to such a stone! The Zodiac Jewelry Company of New York who specialize in birth stones, charms, etc. advise me that chalcedony means blue and is a blue stone, that there is no such thing as a blue-green chalcedony. So now what do I do?

Blue-green seems to me to be the correct astrological color for me to wear as I am a Libran and dark blue is the color for Libra with green as the secondary color. The chalcedonies that I saw in Washington were a light blue. There seems to be some mistake somewhere. Do you know of anyone else who was advised to wear such a stone?

You probably know that Laurie Pratt is in New York now. She will be there a couple of weeks longer at least and is then going to Philadelphia and from there to Washington.

R4. 8/2/35 EC’s letter:

Many thanks for yours of the 30th. We regretted as much as you your inability to be at the Congress, but are glad to know that you are pleased with the report in the Bulletin. I’m sure that we will have even greater opportunities during the coming year, to spread the work and to be of a service to our fellow man.

I am happy with you to know that the reading for your sister has proven helpful. You may be sure that I am much more pleased with the spiritual results than the physical alone. For I am persuaded that if we keep the right spiritual attitude the physical will take care of itself. That we have been of help in bringing about this change is indeed gratifying, and we give thanks to the Giver of all good and perfect gifts.

I have not seen a copy of the book, “Our Atlantis” by Dr. Phelon. I have two or three manuscipts that have been sent me by various individuals. One of the best ones, I understand, is “A Dweller on Two Planets” by Phylos. I suppose you have read this?

We had quite an interesting report from one of our members [Mrs. [585]] who checked up on her Atlantean incarnation as given in her Life Reading. A description was given of a well on a small island in the Atlantic Ocean, where she could find evidences that would be proof to her of reincarnation and the existence of the continent Atlantis. She went there with guides; they had to cut their way through mangroves. She found the well and drank of the fresh water, although the island was very small and the well was only a few feet from the ocean on either side. Around the well were carved stones, apparently in Arabian or Egyptian hieroglyphics; that is, somewhat similar but in ways entirely different. Your description of Dr. Phelon’s experience reminded me of this, and I thought you would be interested to know about it.

Now, about the stone you should wear, I don’t know what to say. The Reading must have meant something definite when it said blue-green chalcedony. At the next opportunity, where we have a reading in which it would be permissable, we will ask just what this is and where it may be obtained, and under what name. Your experience with this reminds me of that of a young man whose reading told him to wear about his person a lapis linguis. We had never heard of such a stone, and neither had the jeweler; but I was with him several months later when we found one in a mine several hundred feet under the ground (which was being operated for other purposes) out in Arizona. It was of the family of lapis lazuli. So, I hope we will be able to help you find YOUR stone - and not with such great trouble either. [See [440] series.]

Yes, we have heard from Miss Pratt. She seems to be quite busy and having a very successful trip. We are looking forward to seeing her back in Norfolk. As you perhaps know, she carries an article on Astrology each day in our two Norfolk papers. This is an outgrowth of her visit here during our Third Annual Congress when she lectured for us to our Norfolk groups.

I’m asking Miss Gladys to enclose a copy of the reading on the Work [254-87] which we obtained during the Congress, and I would like to know what you think of it. It seems that all present had an unusual experience during this reading. I have had one myself.

I trust we will have the opportunity soon to find out something about the stone for you, and I assure you we will get as much definite information as possible about it.

Did you ever find out where I might locate a blue-green chalcedony? My Life Reading advised me that “for its greater vibration, the entity should have upon its body at all periods, the blue-green chalcedony.” I have never been able to find anything but a blue chalcedony.

Blue and green are my astral colors, according to my astrological chart, so I know that these are the colors I should wear. I would like to get the stone if I can find it somewhere.

Mrs. Ethel Shanafelt, that beautiful soul who is being guided in her writings by the Elder Brothers, is writing a series of articles entitled “Children of Light.” She writes that, “the use of color-jewel effects are found to be spiritual truths,” and that “there is nothing fancied in the uplifting values of color-jewel offerings, they can be stimulating, quieting, replacing some quality which has been impaired or perhaps ignored until dormant.”

We are hoping to adjourn Congress by June 6th but many members doubt the probability. I rather think we will be able to close by the 8th. I expect to remain here for about ten days after adjournment then I want to go home if I can possibly do as relatives from California are visiting my family during their vacation. I hope to see them before they leave. For that reason I doubt that I shall be able to attend the annual convention of the Association next month. If I am still in Washington at that time I shall make an effort to get down to Virginia Beach.

I am told Laurie Pratt is in Reno! But we haven’t heard from her in several months. Some one told me that her mother has been urging her to give up her work in astrology. Which seems to me to be a mistake. She is a good astrologer.

Well, this is a critical month in a critical year. History is certainly in the making this year. How fortunate we are to be living in this period of transition! It seems as if no one could help expanding a little, the Cosmic forces draw so close to us. [See report here on 813-2, her Physical Rdg.]

And the Life Reading. The benefit derived from it has been inestimable. It gave me a perspective I could not otherwise have obtained. It helped me to find the place where I stand in the course of evolution. It gave me clear understanding where I groped before. It showed me something worthwhile that I may accomplish. How much I appreciate the information received I couldn’t begin to tell you.

This is such a long letter I know it will tax your patience. It is fortunate for you that I don’t write more frequently!

R11. 9/14/36 Miss [813]‘s letter to EC:

What a critical year this proving to be! The fateful 16th of September is upon us and the new moon of the 15th is said to bring important changes. The world is certainly at the crossroads. But what a privilege to be living in this generation! And the wonder of it is that we can look ahead a little and see the effect of the causes now in operation. In one way and another I have learned of events that would take place in the world several years or several months in advance and it gives one a strange feeling to see these things inevitably take place. What a marvel and a wonder these higher laws are!

The battle now seems to be between the new and the old orders, with socialism gaining. Like everyone else I am wondering who will be elected President. It has seemed to me that the choice of the people will be Roosevelt. This is based upon the polls that have been taken by various publications. Roosevelt seems to represent the new order and the Republican party the old order, which brings us to the inevitable battle between the old and new order. It seems as if the new order is due to win, and yet somehow it does not seem as if Roosevelt is destined to be reelected. And so personally I go in circles when I try to guess the result of the November election.

I am more personally concerned with the re-election of the Congressman with whom I am association in my work - If he loses, I lose my job in Washington. And as I have parents to support and a household here to maintain it is a serious problem to lose a job. However, I do not worry as I know there is always a way when we have the will to do.

Swami Yogananda is now in India. On his way to and from India he is visiting many other countries. He visited England, Scotland, and many European countries and stopped over in Palestine. A quotation from a letter written to his students on August 11, 1935 I believe will be of interest to you, even though I have already made this letter too long for your patience:

“Jesus has been gone a long time, but Christ is still tangibly active in Jerusalem. He was with me everywhere, and I remembered devotees in Him. I saw Bethlehem, the house of Mary and Martha, the tomb of Lazarus, the hall of the Last Supper, Gethesemane, and above all, the Mount of Olives.

“Jesus, invisible, was with me always in Jerusalem and went with me everywhere. It is too sacred to express. Antiquity was unfolded before my eyes - as depicted in the Divine drama. I was overwhelmed. May you all meditate so deeply that you will really behold Jesus yourself.

“Jerusalem - best from a spiritual standpoint; greatest, though still primitive and dirty physically, yet it surpasses all Europe spiritually. Jesus was doubly real after visiting Jerusalem. Holy places change souls if they have faith in the vibrations of saintly people.

“Cairo is beautiful. The sphinx and the pyramids talked to me much about ancient history.”

You will well understand what lies hidden between those lines. I hope that some day when he returns that I shall hear more about the Palestine experience.

Swami and his party had one truly astounding and sublime experience in Konnersreuth, Germany where they saw and talked to Theresa Neumann, the young women who bears wounds like those inflicted on the body of Jesus when He was nailed to the cross, and who passes through His experiences in a state of trance, or ecstasy, each Friday. At these times, blood flows from some of the wounds, and from all of them at Easter. It HAS BEEN SEVERAL YEARS SINCE SHE HAS EATEN ANY PHYSICAL FOOD. SHE DOES NOT EVEN DRINK WATER, but is sustained entirely by spiritual power.

The Swami and his party talked with her on a Thursday and were invited to see her in the state of ecstasy on Friday. All agree that it was a most wonderful and awe-inspiring experience and that she is a real saint.

My dear Miss [813]:-

I was very glad to have yours of the 14th. We are all very happy to know that Mrs. [1257] was so pleased with her reading. I was not conscious, though you may have told me before, that she was the Principal of a school.

The reports on the accuracy of the statements made respecting individuals about whom we could not possibly know anything certainly are a marvel to us, and practically every report on the Life Reading is. So I am coming to the opinion that possibly the Life Reading is the most useful type of information given through this channel.

It certainly is very true as to how different each reading is, and I’m sure it depends entirely upon the individuals, their desires and their sincerity in seeking information at the time. For it is evidently an interpretation on the individual experiences of the persons in the light of what they are thinking and feeling as they seek information of this nature. I don’t know what else it can be.

This was possibly brought more forcibly to our attention this last spring, by some of the research investigators - such as Dr. Henry Hardwicke, Dr. Lucien Warner, Dr. Bhagat Thind and Dr. Hereward Carrington - as to the manner in which the Life Readings do not fail to give the warnings but in such a constructive way, as well as telling the excellent things that might be accomplished by an individual if not becoming too egotistical regarding same. Or, in other words, they say just as you do that the Life Readings are so very constructive in that they assist the individual from the spiritual angle to develop his or her own particular abilities.

Yes, the fateful 16th has come. I feel very sure the world is at the crossroads. While we have a great many conditions that may aggravate or produce anxiety, the seekers - if I interpret aright - are having a real opportunity, as they ever do, and are being and will be blessed with constructive influences for their everyday experience. For it is our own sincerity and our own ideals that not only influence our own lives but all those about us.

We felt yesterday that we might have a great deal to be anxious about, when the storm was passing. But we are all safe and sound, though a little decrepit from things here and there. And we have a bright, beautiful day today, and a great deal to be thankful for.

Yes, the battle is certainly between the old and the new, which was as the readings put it most definitely set in motion when the nations of the world gathered about the peace table. Those that were written and said then are influencing the order of things in the world today more than most of us realize. Many groups or nations are condemning, many are attempting to find expressions in individual line of thought and activity, or to justify themselves for stands as are being taken now and then. But after all we are coming to learn the lesson, no matter what name we may give it, that we are our brother’s keeper - and the blood of Abel is still crying today as it did in the story that was given us so long ago.

It’s indeed good to know that Swami Yogananda has had such a marvellous visit to the various countries. I am sure he is giving himself in a real service for humanity at this time. It is most wonderful that he feels the actual activity about Jerusalem, Bethlehem and the Mount of Olives. It’s good to hear him express it in such a wonderful way.

I have often wondered about Theresa Neumann and her experiences. I have read everything I could get hold of regarding same. I would certainly love to have such a wonderful experience of being in her presence during one of those experiences, yet after all it isn’t what we know - it is so all important what we do about what we know.

The home that I used to visit in Scarsdale, N.Y. must have been very much like the one you visited recently. I enjoyed Scarsdale immensely and know how pleasant your stay there was. It is one of the loveliest towns in New York and it harbors some of the finest people.

I am glad to know about the young woman [1298] archaeologist who is going to Indo-China and hope sometime to learn more about her unusual experiences. I am wondering what she expects to find in the East.

My spiritual Preceptor, Swami Yogananda, who recently returned to America from a trip around the world, stopped over night in Washington on his way to Los Angeles and addressed our Center. Alas, I had just arrived in town and no one on my friends knew where to find me, so I wasn’t notified of the visit. So I missed seeing him and for quite some time afterward the world was completely out of joint. All the information I have about his trip has been gleaned second-hand.

Since you expressed your interest in Theresa Neumann, who

lives without food, I am sure you will be interested to learn of another woman who neither eats nor drinks.

Mr. Richard Wright, who accompanied the Swami on his recent trip to India, gives the following account in a letter to friends of their meeting with this saint, Giri Baba, who resides in Bankura, Balsura, India:

“We finally stood before her open doors, awaiting her appearance - the climax to a long, eventful journey. And how curious the simple village folk were, young and old…

“Suddenly, from the darkness within, there appeared at the simple open doors a short figure hidden behind a cloth of dull goldish silk of indigenous manufacture, typical of Indian women. She drew forward hesitantly and modestly, peering slightly from beneath the headfold of her “Swadeshi” cloth. Her eyes glistened like glowing coals in the shadows of her headpiece and we were enamored by a most benevolent and kindly face - a face of realization and understanding. Meekly she approached and graciously assented to our snapping a few pictures in the “still” and “movie.” Patiently and shyly she endured our photo techniques and adjustments, etc. Most motherly was her expression as she stood before us, clad in the simple loose-flowing cloth of plain yellowish silk, with only her down-cast face and her tiny feet showing, a face of rare peace and innocent poise.

Humbly she took her seat on the verandah, cross-legged, hands in pronam gesture, and with silent patience she answered our questions and comments. Very briefly, in one or two words, often just “yes” or “no” and very quietly, she answered only those questions which did not refer to the teachings; on those questions which delved into her secret reservoir, she remained mute and distant, several questions caused her to lapse into deep silence and she paused as if in deep reflection before answering our questions. Her voice was low and reserved, her spirit deep and serene.

But scientific reasons led us to ask:

1. Question: Is it true that you have fasted for more than fifty years? After a minute of reflection she said, “Yes, since I was 12 years, 4 months old, and I am now 68.”

2. Question: How is it explained? Answer: “I had a contact with a Sadhu, who gave me a Kriya.”

3. Question: Do you not even drink water? Answer: “I have no necessity of drinking water. If drinking water were a necessity, it could not be resisted.

4. Question: What is this Kriya method? Answer: “I am forbidden by the Sadhus to teach this Kriya to others.”

5. Question: Have you made up your mind never to teach it to others? Her only answer was a blank silence.

In answer to the many other questions asked she gave the following:

“The Sadhu is my Sanyasini Guru. I also have a domestic Guru. My fasting is not due to medicines, but to the power of the mind. My practice consists of chanting a mantra and practicing a certain breath control (very difficult for ordinary persons). I had this power from my previous birth. I haven’t taught anybody - have no willingness to do so. I have no disease nor experience any.”

Question: Do you know how long you will live? No answer.

Thrice the Maharaja of Burdwan took her to his palace for visits of 2 months, 20 days, and 15 days in order to test her. She has no hunger or thirst. Feels only slight pain when injured. Can control her heart and breathing. Has no excretions. The sunlight and air are somewhat necessary. Meditates at night. Attends to domestic duties daily. Slightly feels the change of climate from season to season. Often sees her Guru in visions, as well as when at a bathing ghat on the Ganges at Nawab, as he materialized before her and gave her the teachings. On that day her domestic Guru initiated her. She sleeps very little, for sleeping and waking are the same to her.

By this time dusk had closed around us like an immense veil. Many shadows, cast by a small kerosene lantern, danced in the trees above us, reflections of some thirty natives, all eagerly and curiously watching the proceeding.

As we paid our homage to the enlightened one, others crowded about and pronamed at Swamiji’s feet: Giri Bala also followed suit, showing her humbleness, the sign of a Realized one. So touching was the scene that it is even now emblazoned on the memory. When great ones meet the humbleness is a joy to behold. Regretfully we parted, but joyous for the experience.

I haven’t heard the details of their meeting with the German saint, Theresa Neumann, but I have been told that Mr. Wright fainted when he saw blood flowing from the wounds of her hands and feet. There are actual nail wounds, we are advised, and each Friday she seems to live through the scene at the Cross. She appeared to be following the cross.

One other thing I know you will like to know about. The Swami’s Master, who lived in India, sent for him to come to see him before he died. He felt that his work on earth was completed and the time had come for him to go to another plane. You know the custom of the initiates to leave the body voluntarily when their work on the physical plane is done, for the time being at least. It was so with this great Master. He put aside the physical body like an old cloak when he wished to leave it.

After his “death” he appeared to Swami several times. The first time he came, Swami Yogananda was over-joyed to see him and encircled him with his arms. After a while he found found himself standing with his arms enclosed in a circle but his Master was walking away at some distance!

How sorry I am that I missed hearing him tell of this experience! I have had to learn about it through friends. Yogananda’s Master was a very great initiate and it is my personal opinion that he is an Adept but I haven’t confirmed this as yet. He had marvelous powers, really incredible to those who do not understand the functioning of the higher laws.

We have moved our office so my address has changed. I am giving it at the close of the letter. Am living at the Hay- Adams House for a while but don’t know exactly how long I shall remain there. The hotel is most satisfactory but it is quite expensive. While I am moving about from pillar to post I am receiving my mail at the office.

I hope you and your family are happy and well and that all your difficulties have disappeared.

My dear Mr. Cayce:

The enclosed account of a clairvoyant diagnosis of cancer appears in Geoffry Hodson’s book, “Science of Seership,” and I am sending it to you because I believe you will be interested in it. I wouldn’t know, of course, whether this diagnosis is true or not but it seems most logical to me. I have read with interest the booklet [See under 1800-26 Reports] by Mr. Sugrue, “There Is a River,” and I am awaiting the appearance of his book with even keener interest. He seems well qualified to write it. I like his literary style and the way he approaches his subject. I hope that I may meet him sometime for I have much in common with him.

I think the Association is wise to advance the price of the case readings to twenty dollars, but I think twenty-five would be better. The American public never really appreciates any thing they do not pay for. It is a national characteristic. Offer us something free and it has no value in our eyes. Make us sacrifice for it and it has a lasting value. Personally, I think that any thing worth while is worth some sacrifice. We have to pay a price for everything we get. It seems to me that you give too freely of your time and energy. You could do better work if you were not hampered by lack of funds, and perhaps if you did not give so many readings. While no monetary value can be placed on the readings, of course, Americans usually reckon in dollars and cents and it is my firm belief, from years of observation, that they appreciate most the things they have to pay well for.

About ten years ago I met an Eastern philosopher who said that when he first came to this country to teach he spent about five or six thousand dollars of his own money in giving his system of philosophy to the American public. He finally abandoned that method and charged a fixed sum for his course because he found that his students would not practice the teachings when they were free, they merely listened.

And so it seems to me it is with the readings. To those individuals who really desire readings, a way will be found to pay for them. If they have to sacrifice a little to make payment, so much the better for them. They are more likely to abide by the advice given in the readings. For what does it profit them if they do not? If you gave them the readings free, they wouldn’t value them much, if at all.

I presume you know that Laurie Pratt is now in Los Angeles helping Swami Yogananda with some books he is about to publish. This is the work she likes best to do - literary work.

I am wondering if your father has improved in health. The last word I had he was very ill and you were much concerned about his condition. I sincerely hope he is much better.

Are you planning to come to Washington, this Spring? You mentioned in your letter that you might do so. I haven’t seen any of the Washington group this Winter so am not advised of your schedule.

I hope your birthday yesterday is a happy memory today. May His blessing abide with you all. [813]

I had hoped to be able to ask for another Life Reading from Mr. Cayce this Fall as I think I could greatly benefit from it, but father’s recent hospitalization has laid me flat financially for awhile. I haven’t any words that could tell how much the one Life Reading I had has helped me. It gives a perspective such as nothing else can, in my estimation. Life becomes so much bigger when we can look back a few thousand years. One little life span is so small.

One of the pleasantest memories I have is of your courteous kindness to me during the Congress meetings. How much I appreciate all you and your family did for me! It would make me most happy if I could return in small measure your delightful hospitality at some future time.

My dear Mr. Cayce:

I haven’t forgotten about the library you hope to build and enclose herewith my little mite toward it. Would that it were many times larger but this has been a hard year for me financially due to my father’s serious illness and several other things. I am sure the library will materialize and that we shall all be proud of it.

Have you had a good Winter? I hope the Association is thriving and that no adversities have overtaken it…or your family. Things with me have been running along in the same old routine. Right now I am hoping that Congress will adjourn in June but no one here is making any guesses as to the length of the present session. The best we can hope for is adjournment by July 1st.

A couple of weeks ago I met Mrs. [1648]. She is living but a couple of blocks from my apartment house so she came over one evening to see me. We became friends almost at once and soon she was talking intimately of her family affairs…proof positive of friendship!

She is a lovely and charming person and it is a privilege to know her. She brought her life reading along and we found she had lived her last incarnation in this country in early colonial times, as I had. Also that we both had sojourned on Jupiter and Mercury between incarnations and that we each were born under the same planetary sign…Libra. Her son’s birthday is the same as mine…October 12th. So you see we understood each other well almost on sight. We must be moving, or incarnating I should say, in the same, “circle”. She said she wanted me to meet her son and if I do I am sure I shall find we have much in common. He has his mother’s love of beauty, Mrs. [1648] says.

I have heard Mr. Hugh Lynn’s program but two or three times due to circumstances over which I had no control. WOR is a difficult station to get in Washington and I have had trouble hearing the program. Then the station changed the day and hour of the program and I lost it for awhile. I haven’t heard it for a couple of weeks so suppose it has been discontinued. I wrote to the Broadcasting Company here …station WOL…and a friend of mind also write a letter. The answers of WOL are enclosed for your information.

What a lesson in passive resistance Mahatma Gandhi has given to the world. I am told that a wave of spirituality has gone round the world since his fast. If our entire country would turn to prayer we would need no armaments. The Mahatma’s fast is much misunderstood, many interpreting political motives to him. But I am informed on good authority that because he could not induce the young ruler of the Indian state in question to make certain desirable changes in his form of government, he blamed himself for impurity and therefore fasted to purify himself. Not that there was special virtue in fasting but that he might devote his entire time to meditation he refrained from eating. He achieved his desire. I read in the newspapers that business in India was suspended in the markets and the people prayed. Can you imagine that happening in this country? If only our country as a whole could realize the power of the soul! As a nation we are in spiritual darkness and we aren’t even aware of our own ignorance! Instead of passive resistance we turn to armaments and more armaments.

Of the hundreds of reasons for the current “depression” that have come to my desk scarcely one has been a true analyses. Few have understood that our own gross materiality has brought about our downfall as a prosperous nation. Every possible cause for the depression has been advanced but very, very few attribute lack of spirituality as the true cause. However, I know that a Higher Power is guiding our nation’s destiny so we poor humans need not carry the world on our shoulders!

I am wondering if the British capitol will be moved to Ottawa within a year or so and if the treasures in the British museum will not be moved there also? It seems to me that the ex-king, the Duke of Windsor would make a grand governor general of Canada and that would be a solution to the present problem of what to do with him…what do you think?

By the way, I wonder if you remember giving a reading [[3976] series?] in which someone asked whether the Government departments would be reorganized according to the President’s desire? The inquirer was told that a modified reorganization bill would be passed…or words to that effect.

The prophecy is coming true for a reorganization bill is being passed through both Houses of Congress with no difficulty at all. It is a compromise bill and is not meeting with opposition.

I didn’t write to thank you and your family for your gracious and kind hospitality this Fall because I hated to intrude again on your time even with a letter. But I am sure you know how much I appreciated all you did for us.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

I would like to get in touch with Mr. Thomas Sugrue if I can and am wondering if you would send me his present address? Is he now able to get about and is he feeling well enough to write? I want to get him to write an article for the American Magazine, or if he can’t do it, to get someone else on the staff to do it.

The subject of the proposed article is an old colored man here in Washington whose character is so extraordinary the country should learn something about him. Newspapers articles have appeared from time to time about him and once he was on a radio program, but the spiritual beauty and loveliness of the man will never be revealed to the public unless the right person interviews Harry and secures the story of his life at first hand.

He will not live much longer. After he is dead considerable will be written about old Harry Parker but the information will be gathered in a haphazard way and will be colored by the opinions of those who give it. His father and mother were slaves on the Mt. Vernon estate and when Harry was twelve years old he ran away and came to the Capitol where he worked as a boot black for a time. He has been employed at the Capitol in one capacity or another ever since. A couple of years ago special legislation granting him a pension was passed. When the bill came to the floor for a vote, every Congressman in the House stood on his feet and cheered. Old black Harry sat in the gallery looking on. It was a great day in his life, but he has so little ego he said very little about it.

You may remember a conversation we had some time ago about Hitler. You said at the time that he went into solitude and was told what to do from time to time [See 3976-13]. I asked how that could be when some of acts are so atrocious! I had in mind then only spiritual guidance. It puzzled me greatly and I have often wondered about it. Lately I came upon an article which clears up the mystery. I presume you have known this for some time but it is news to me. I wonder why I never thought of this solution! The article in part follows:

“For the 33 years following the commencement of the Aquarian Age the rulers of Germany made plans and built up military might with the end in view of complete world domination. The four year struggle which commenced in 1914 failed to bring them the realization of this egocentric dream. A million Germans died with hearts overflowing with hate; and then or later most of the leaders who had planned and fought so vigorously also passed to the inner plane. But in thus passing the desire for vengeance of those thwarted who died in agony did not change (nor did the determination for world domination cease among the leaders now there abiding who so long and carefully had planned for it.)

“There was a MEDIUMISTIC SENSITIVE through whom they found it easy to work. He was a vegetarian, he renounced sex; periodically he went into retirement to receive guidance from within. The elevated position of Saturn in his chart of birth gave him a limitless ambition. In HITLER, the German war lords now on the inner plane found a most receptive instrument for carrying out their will on earth. (Not merely because he was mediumistically sensitive, but because in addition his disposition and desires were so similar.)

“This tuning in on the thoughts and desires of those who have passed from earth, not only by Hitler but by others, has been made easier since 1914, when Pluto, the ruler of the sign of death, Scorpio, moved persistently into Cancer, the mediumistic sign.”

I shall be interested to know what you think of this article.

When do you plan to take your vacation? Where do you think you will go or is that a secret? So many of my friends are leaving for San Francisco and the West Coast, or have just returned that I am a little envious. Here we sit and sit in Congress while the members try to make up their minds about current legislation. No one really knows what to do. They are all moving in circles.

What about neutrality, and the world situation in general? About the worst thing that has happened in recent months, to my way of thinking, is the way the American public has absorbed Nazi propaganda about the Jews. They have swallowed it hook, line and sinker, as the old saying goes, and seem to have no idea that what they are trying to digest is merely Nazi propaganda. It has reached Capitol Hill, much to my distress. And the book William Dudley Pelley has recently published about the Jews will do an enormous amount of harm.

I hope to get away from Washington before the end of July. So far the weather has been quite comfortable but it has been too good to last much longer. I hope also that you and your family were able to get some rest over the holiday. Are you very busy now? Have been thinking of having a check life reading soon. I am still going in circles as to which of the four I want to know about most. I have been doing this for several years and am equally interested in each of the four. If I had a check reading, perhaps I could inquire as to where I can locate the blue-green Chalcedyne stone. I am told I must always wear it but I can’t find one!

Thanks for yours of the 6th. Always a real pleasure to have a letter from you - enjoy every one of them - and all the family usually gather to hear it read. And this time read it to Mr. Sugrue also, whom you asked about. He is here with us while he hasn’t gotten able to get about as yet - he is writing a bit - just how he would go about it to interview Harry don’t know unless could have him here for a bit - and don’t suppose that would fit in with his program (Harry’s) would it??

But know that would make a fine article - believe Tom could do a good job of it - and is certainly something that should be preserved in the best way for future generations. Do hope he can have the opportunity to do it.

Tom came here the day after the Meeting closed - wanted to be where he could have the closest contact with the work - and is writing the Book that he wrote the preface to some years ago.

Thank you for quoting the Article about Hitler. That is the answer no doubt to the many conditions that have arisen from time to time. Whether it will be over come or not before it comes to open warfare - I wonder - but the information has insisted for a long time - prayer for those that died in hate and for the safety of PEACE now - is the most effectual way to keep peace - pray and live just as we pray.

Thank you for quoting from the article - it is about right, am sure. Well, I wonder if I am to have a vacation. Seems if I get one it will have to be about the first weeks of Aug. but have been so busy since the meeting have had only one Sunday of rest - and the next two have had to be given to even try and keep up with the requests - but the Meeting really helped me. The rest of the family were worn out but me - was much fresher after than before - am growing tired, I fear, or maybe it is I want to go fishing somewhere.

Sure would love to go to Frisco - well Cal. - and spend a few weeks or months - many there would like to know better.

There was a reading at the meeting on “America and her Problems” [3976-24] think they will have it out pretty soon the congress paper.

Haven’t seen or heard before of Mr. Pelley’s book how or where can one get a copy or do you know - would hate to see the same problem come up here as has in some places but the information I believe says it rests as much with the Jews as with others as to whether it does or not.

Had some friends from Washington at the Beach a week or so ago - a very lovely couple - the lady Mrs. [808] has gotten wonderful help from her reading (physical).

Hard to say about any period in a Check-Life, they are all so interesting that is a question - but will be interesting to see what it may tell you about the stone.

I was much interested to read an article in the Sunday New York Herald Tribune of June 4th which had the following headline: “QUAKE RECORDS TRACE RISE OF A VAST NEW CONTINENT DOWN MIDDLE OF ATLANTIC…SERIES OF ISLES DUE TO ASCEND AND THEN LINE…Seismologists All Over the World Pool Findings to ‘Watch’ Continent’s Birth…”

In case you didn’t see the article I will give a little of it here: “A new continental land mass is slowly rising under the waves of the mid-Atlantic almost from pole to pole. Halfway between North America and Europe and South America and Africa there is a submarine ridge which makes the ocean much shallower in the middle than nearer the continents. Throughout the vast length of this area there is continual seismic activity, demonstrating that the ridge is in process of building up and at some time islands will rise out of the ocean. They will continue to gain elevation until they are joined and a continental land mass is created…”

Poor old Atlantis is now to be a “new continent”! Well, now that it has appeared in a newspaper, I suppose some of the skeptics will begin to believe that Atlantis is actually rising from the sea.

Thank you for yours of the 14th. Think Tom is coming along very well - he is able to more and more work every day it seems to me - and he is just growing better but as slowly as a child grows possibly.

Is most interesting what you tell me about Miss [778]‘s little girl [398] as we have had several readings on her - also her Life reading. Have wondered why haven’t heard from Miss [778] lately. Do you have her address or would Inner Culture Magazine reach her??

The article you tell me about is most interesting - didn’t see it but hope to get a copy - and will ask Tom to try - for am sure he would like to see it also. We have had quite a bit about this, you know. Then there was a man here last week - a retired naval officer, a Lexographer of the sea, and he was telling me about the change that is coming about - and verifying a good deal of what we have had - he has mapped the entire Atlantic and promised to show me the maps next time am in N.Y. Dear Mr. Cayce:

I have just remembered with deep chagrin that I failed to thank you for autographing the book by Mr. Sugrue last Fall. How I could have been so negligent, I don’t know but the book arrived just as I was preparing to leave Washington for all time and the multitude of really urgent things pressing for immediate attention kept me so occupied that I didn’t write you then. However, I read the book immediately evenings when I could snatch a few minutes of leisure and I found it extremely engrossing, exceeding my expectations.

Of the several reviews of the book that I have read, I like Eileen Garrett’s best. She paid just tribute to Mr. Sugrue and she seems to possess considerable understanding of universal laws. So you know her! I subscribe to the magazine “Tomorrow” of which she is editor-in-chief and I have long enjoyed her editorials. She must be a grand person. I noted that the back cover of her magazine carried a full page advertisement of Sugrue’s book one month.

As I came directly to Caroga Lake, N.Y. last December and have been here ever since, I have had no opportunity to get the book reviewed, as I promised to do. But I think that already there must have been many reviews of it as I have seen about four. All were most favorable. Was it ever reviewed by the Christian Scientists?

Now that added fame has come to you, what has been the reaction? Did you receive many letters and requests for readings? Did you have many visitors? And did you have more “investigators”? Has anyone written unfavorably or critically of the book? Have you more requests for readings than you can possibly accomplish?

I didn’t receive any word about a Congress meeting this past June so suppose that on account of traveling conditions no meeting was held. I had hoped that I could get down your way before I left Washington but I couldn’t manage it, what with gas shortage and all.

I haven’t worked since last December but I shall look about for something to do in September. There was much work to be done here on my place and I wanted to be with my family for a while before I took up a new job. There is curtailment of vacations now and once established in a new position I knew I would be tied down very closely for a year or so without opportunity to look after my place or see my family. Father is eighty-four and getting quite feeble. We can hire no work done so I have to be jack of all trades up here this summer. I mow the lawn, which is a big one and hard going, split kindling, spade the garden, scrub woodwork and paint porches among other things. The physical exercise is good and this mountain air is wonderful. I feel 80 per cent better than I did last Winter. I haven’t an idea as to what I should or may do and hope that I may be guided in the matter.

Sorry that this letter is running over on to another page but I write so seldom that I am sure you will have forbearance.

Have you seen Paul Brunton’s new book, “Wisdom of the Overself”? It is a sequel to “The Hidden Teaching Beyond Yoga”. He writes in the preface that he went to great pains to explore the most recondite sources in quest of the material which has partly gone into the making of his latest book and that in the course of this exploration the hidden teaching was discovered not in a perfectly unified system but in scores of broken fragments which have been scattered in different hands amongst Asia’s present-day cultural inheritors.

However, although the book is written in an intellectualistic form it is not merely a modernized re-interpretation of mildewed ancient documents, he states, but some of its statements are the outcome not only of such re-interpretation but also of present-day living experience.

I do not believe that some of this teaching which he presents has ever before appeared in English print. He says as much and I never have come across it anywhere. Reference is here made to some ancient scripts.

The chapter entitled “The Scorpion of Death”, the fifth chapter, is the most detailed and explicit on the subject of death and the life hereafter, so far as I know, in the English language. The chapters on “The Shadows of Evil and Suffering” and “The War and the World” are particularly good. But I like best the chapter on meditation and I found it very helpful.

Here at … all is peaceful. The Summer climate is about perfect this year, our neighbors are kind and congenial and the landscape is beautiful to look at. I am indeed thankful for the opportunity to be here this one year at least. It is so restful after the tension of Washington, D.C.

Dear Miss [813]:

I can’t help but reply to yours of the twenty-seventh. We often speak of you and are reminded now and then, by some of the people in Washington of the interest that you have aroused there. Quite a number of the papers and magazines reviewed the book. Coronet is to have an article about it I believe next month. There was also reviewed in the Digest Magazine which is published in Toronto - I haven’t seen this. I do not know that the scientist’s ever gave anything to it but there was quite a lot of it in the Christian Century, July 2. If you happen to see this, I think you will enjoy reading it.

Yes, we had the Congress meeting. It is true Hugh Lynn is in the army and most of the work fell on me and we questioned as to whether to undertake a meeting or not, but finally decided that if there was a time ever needed, it was this year. We had many more visitors from out of town than we had from our local people in Norfolk, owing to gas rationing here.

The publication of the book has brought many more requests than we can possibly take care of and we are more than six months ahead with our appointments. In fact, I believe the next appointments are the first of April. I am sure you have enjoyed your vacation, but apparently, you have been quite possibly busy and some of it very strenuous work. I under took a garden this year, but the many quite and the season has been so hot and wet that I am ashamed of it. Both our our boys, as you know, are in the army and we have two grandsons one just one month old, and his father has never seen his baby.

I heard someone speak about the new Brunton book, but haven’t seen it myself. I saw your copy of “The Hidden Teachers Beyond Yoga”. It was sent to Mr. Sugrue to review while he was here and Tom wasn’t much impressed. I would like to have this last book from what you say about it and I will see if I can get someone to send it to the library here.

KONNERSREUTH, Germany (AP)-Therese Neumann, 64, an almost legendary figure among Catholics, died Tuesday of a heart ailment. With the exception of 1951, Miss Neumann has appeared to enter a trance on Good Friday of each year and suffer the agonies of Christ on the cross, with blood apparently streaming from her eyes and hands.
