This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 30th day of January, 1936, in accordance with request made by the self - Miss [897] [She preferred to be called “Miss” altho a divorcee.], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

Time of Reading 3:30 to 3:45 P. M. Washington, D.C.

1. GC: (Entity known now as [897], born June 17, 1904 in Garrett Park, Indiana, and the information given this entity through this channel on April 18, 1935. You will give at this time a detailed account of the entity’s appearance as Katherine O’Leene in Sussex, England, during the period of the Crusades to the Holy Land. Please give dates of birth and death, family connections and marriage records as would be helpful in research work on this appearance. Answer the questions which will be asked about this appearance.)

2. EC: Yes, we have the entity now known as or called [897]; and the information that has been given respecting the activities of the entity in the earth’s plane.

3. In those periods, or that period, when the activities of the entity were as K-a-t-h-l-e-e-n O’L-e-e-n-e, we find the entity was among those who were left by the entities (or the mates) leaving for what came to be known as the Holy Wars - or the Crusades.

4. As to the activities of the entity then, or its description, we find that the record has remained as Kathleen O’Leene; for the entity then was a companion to one J-o-c-o-b-a-c-e-n O’L-e-e-n-e.

5. In the period the entity was fair of hair, blue of eyes; the weight being one-thirty-six (136) and the height five feet ten and a half (5’10-1/2”). The demean - well, as demean would mean!

6. As we have indicated, there were those activities that made for developments and retardments.

7. In detail some of these would not be very pretty; as may be found from the records, beginning on Page 176 of the Scotch-Irish Descents of O’Leene’s. See?

9. (Q) Please spell out the entity’s full maiden name. (A) Given.

10. (Q) Give the names of the entity’s children - if any. (A) Find these here together! There’s Jacobacen and Nietza [?].

11. (Q) Give the name of the place of the entity’s birth. (A) As given, in Sussex; in the land, the moor there.

12. (Q) Describe any special activities in which the entity took part. (A) Best to give these from the records as indicated. Some are not pretty!

13. (Q) Just what was the entity’s relation then to the individual who is the present father? (A) A neighbor.

14. (Q) Just how did they influence each other’s life then? (A) Read the records; these are better! For, from the standards of the day, some of these are not so good!

Those that have been indicated are such that if APPLIED IN THE EXPERIENCE of the entity may become worth while, if they are governed by rather the relationships of Creative Forces and the rectitudes in the experience such that the activities are prompted not for self-indulgence, self-aggrandizement, but that the glory of the Creative Forces may become the more the RULING influence in the experience or the relationships of an individual towards its fellow man!

15. (Q) Describe early family life, living conditions and social status. (A) On the farm or the moor, and the relationships - as would be termed under the present regime - were in a community of well-balanced surroundings; not in the small town, but rather in the community homes.

16. (Q) In what places did the entity live and work where records may be found? (A) As indicated; read there, on these pages - 176 it begins.

17. (Q) In what place may such records be found? (A) As just given, where the records of such are kept! They are here where the entity has entertained itself, and has labored, has worked; as well as among those records of the Scotch-Irish relationships in England, Scotland, Ireland. The O’Leene’s were the ones to be dealt with in both of these!

18. (Q) In the Library of Congress, where may the records be found? (A) In the 4th book from the 3rd end of the 16th shelf from the 9th corner, in the left wing! [1/31/36 See HLC’s attempt to explain this impatient answer under 897-2 Reports.]

R1. 1/31/36 Letter to Miss [897] in Washington, D.C. from HLC:

“Inclosed you will find a copy of the information secured for you yesterday. The delay has been occasioned by an unusual number of emergency Physical Readings and a slight illness of my father’s resulting from over work.

“Frankly I was disappointed in the data secured for you. Many individuals have received Check Life Readings such as this that have been almost as long as the original Life Reading. For your consideration I would like to suggest two reasons for this brevity. Apparently from the information there was considerable activity during this incarnation of yours that was of questionable nature. The psychic point of view is kinder than our human tendency and since you, according to this information, will be able to locate information on yourself simply refused to focus upon such facts as would have come out before individuals not concerned with you directly. When we consider the influence of thought of negative character it is possible to better understand the deep spiritual basis of a psychic point of view which refuses to be destructive.

“Another and possibly more nearly correct explanation may lie in the fact that my father’s physical condition may have interfered with the range of the contact with the necessary records. I would suggest that you locate any data possible on the incarnation and then we will be glad to secure another reading - without expense to you - on the period and bring out any other information which may prove helpful.

“Just a comment or two before closing. I personally consider the spelling of the name and that of the husband the only definite data in the reading. The spiritual advice in the answer to question 6 [897-2, Par. 14-A], is good though general. If applied to the urges from this particular life it may be of greater value to you than I can understand. I would not consider the references to pages and places for locating the data particularly valuable. The records mentioned were probably in England or elsewhere out of your reach. The last statement regarding the Library of Congress [897-2, Par. 18-A] sounded more more like a short answer (irritated) than sensible information.

“I truly regret the delay in this matter and the brevity of the data secured. Such things happen now and then and really furnish more interesting problems in the study of psychic information than the regular information, but this is not very helpful to the one seeking the information.

“Please feel that we will be glad to assist you in any way possible in following this up. Let us hear from you as to whether you are able to locate anything of interest. Your suggestions and questions for the follow up (research) reading will be appreciated.”

Dear Mr. Cayce,

“I appreciate the endeavors that I know were made to secure a Check Reading for me on my appearance at the Crusade period. I can quite understand that with the many demands made upon him, your Father’s super-conscious self should exercise its right of self-preservation from exhaustion and and temporarily go on strike. And I feel that it was quite right to do so!

“I wonder if it would be asking too much to ask to have the experiment tried again? That is, if your Father has entirely recovered his good health, and also if it does not interfere with other plans.

“As you suggested, I have tried to verify the information received, but as you can understand, I didn’t get very far! About all I succeeded in establishing was that there really was such a surname as O’Leene (I had never heard it before) and also that there were Irish settlers in England at that period in the middle ages (but these were nearly all monks).

“However, my first idea was that the name was not O’Leene but rather Oleio - or Olei - the modern corruption is Oley. I can only surmise the technique of reading the Akashic Records, but I understand it must be done in the astral light, which is thru a glass darkly, and leads to trifling mistakes. In the original Life Reading given for me, the name of this appearance was taken down as O’Leene. When I found thru digging in the Library that Hugh de Oleio was one of William’s knights, and received as part of his share of the loot some manors in Sussex, I thought I had identified the family. They have no connection with the O’Leenes, who are entirely Irish, and for whom I can find no record of an English sojourn in the middle ages.

“I wonder if the reading could be tried over again? I have appreciated so much your spirit of cooperation, and feel sure that if we cannot obtain success in this, it is due to causes over which none of us has any control.

“Please give my best wishes to your father, and tell him I want to say thank you to him for his efforts on my account.”

R3. 12/6/72 GD’s note: Sometimes EC, or the source, seemed impatient at the “picky” or probing questions. While the answer may have been correct (Who can tell?), we felt that EC or the source was evading the question, as if of no importance or not interested in it. I think HLC’s explanation in his 1/31/36 letter [See Par. R1 above] is correct. Some such quick answers were funny, or at least those present laughed; that’s why we have indexed it under Humor as well as Research Potential and I have just added Work:EC:Readings:Attunement.

B1. North-South polarization for this reading, when according to that which has been given it should have been South-North. EC wouldn’t change after he had laid down in the North-South position. Don’t know whether this influenced the tone of reading or not. GD.
