This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 6th day of November, 1925, in accordance with request made by self - Mr. [900].

1. GC: You will have before you the body and enquiring mind of [900], of … Street, New York City, and the dreams this body had on the date which I will give you. You will give the interpretation and lesson to be gained from each of these, as I read same to you, and you will answer the questions which I shall ask you concerning same.

2. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [900]. This we have had before. Ready for dreams, the questions.

3. GC: And the conscious comments relating to these dreams.

4. (Q) Tuesday Morning, Nov. 4, 1925, at home. (A) 3rd.

5. (Q) Now in this one many are included - my father, mother and others. We were all in a room - my father seeming to be the controlling influence. A player piano was in action and I was listening to the music (which I love so well - in fact I call the four horsemen of my life: 1. MY PHILOSOPHY and its contingent work (Institute). 2. MY HOME and all it includes in itself and surroundings, (my wife and family - mother, brother, etc.). 3. MUSIC - its inspiration and peace. 4. MY BUSINESS for its enterprise and contribution towards my development and the physical sustenance of the first three.) As the piano played, my father said: “Now do you see how all Force is One Force - that music - your stock market all One” and then in the piano I saw these numbers “175 - 180 - 181 - 180 - 175.” It seemed some man - a younger man of psychic powers came in through the window. He seemed to know much, so I asked him what the numbers meant. The piano stopped playing and the voice said: “That piano in reality has not stopped - you have stopped HEARING it.” I turned again to the man and asked to what stock the numbers referred. He grew angry with me and said of me: “He is always asking me what stock the numbers refer to. Always what stock, what stock” - then turning to me said: “Why don’t you stand on your own feet a little more, and find the stock for yourself?” “Yes,” I replied, feeling rebuked, “Of course I should know. The numbers refer to Southern R.R.” The younger man took up his coat and as I stood abashed and uncertain, he turned as he was about to go out of the door, saying: “No, it refers to Louisville & Nashville.” Then my father: “[900], you should take that stock in.” The piano - the stock market all going again in one ceaseless energy. My mother than spoke up saying: “You see, [900], what is the use of your work. He won’t give you the stocks anyway, and when he does he gives it wrong - but I told you so - you wouldn’t listen.” The “He” of course referred to the young man - my psychic study. It seems hard sometimes to keep my four horsemen in union, working for the benefit of all, yet the Philosophy - the psychic work was a young man - only a colt yet - he’ll grow into the strength that holds us all - and besides my father is there to augment this through young, yet developing power. My Home (Mother), my Business (Stocks), have not yet been fully co-related, under the power of full and complete Spiritual Understanding, and the problem presented is just this: To prevent complete disruption of all, complete failure, awaiting the development of the governing and guiding power of complete and full understanding and knowledge of proper application of that understanding. Another loss such as sustained in L & N and Arnold & Constable (30,000) in all, and we must fail. It is just such a loss we are worried about in our large holdings of Southern R.R. Stock. You will analyze and explain this [[Visions|vision]] very full and give just what is intended [900] should learn and do, for he is willing to do anything in his power - make any sacrifice for the accomplishment of his [[Ideal|ideals]]. The loss of 30,000 is nothing if only the progress remains unimpaired. Thus the guidance of his Father brought to the rescue, so to speak, from a physical standpoint.” (A) In this we find many of the conditions given the entity in an emblematical condition or way as exists in the development of the entity at the present time. In the vision as is seen, the four elements enter that are the greater forces and influence in the life of the entity, with those surroundings that bring every bearing on the life and understanding of the entity, with that over-guiding Spirit of the Father in the co-related with giving then to the entity the full understanding of the oneness of purpose, as is seen in the four elements going to make up that of the entity’s earthly plane, see? and as each element is presented, though in its whole confusion (home surroundings, music surroundings, stock surroundings, philosophy surroundings) the Voice of that Guide coming, then, to the entity in that, “See all these forces are One.” That is, through each and every one of these conditions as make up the entity’s development, the entity’s sojourn, as it were, in the earth’s plane, all are for the purpose of manifesting the Forces of the Oneness of the Creator in the earth’s plane.

The entrance then of the young man, the colt, as is seen, is of self’s own development as pertains to the phenomena of each one’s existence in the entity’s make-up, see? and as is recognized by the entity - young, yet would grow, yet would gain the more perfect understanding, for the entity recognizes that through this force, through this phenomena, may the whole understanding come to the entity as pertains to effect of music on the life and the living, the ACTIVE living, of an individual. The effect upon the home and the active life toward each individual concerning the home, the action upon stocks and that concerning the action of each individual stock, as it may go. As is seen in the question as is asked regarding his remembering, the entity remembering that this force may apply to the conscious forces of the individual and give that necessary for the perfect understanding. The refusal being, entity stand on own self, in this: That through self there must come that full knowledge as would give the entity that understanding necessary to make the action in the use of the same knowledge pertaining to stock, the same as that necessary for the use in action pertaining to home, to music, or to the philosophies of life, and through this same means, though the numbers are given as is seen, this then referring to both those stocks in which the entity has gained, has lost, will gain, will lose some conditions, see? These, then, show that these, figures represent that price to which each of these commodities, each of these stocks, will represent on the board. The voice as comes from the father, to the covering of the stock in L & N, see, showing then how that the entity may, through this same source, obtain that information necessary in which to act upon, to make all those connections savory, as it were, in the mind and in the understanding of the entity. The rejection by the mother of the information as given, shows that resistive force which has ever kept the even keel and balance in the life of the entity. Though there comes times when this brings the uneasiness, the distress in a manner, yet when studied to the core, as is seen by the individual, and the look and voice from the father, and the answer, this has been and IS that home element, giving the conscious balance in physical, mental and spiritual reaction, necessary for the entity to gain that lesson necessary, as to make self strong in the ways that would give the more perfect understanding to all those laws pertaining to the forces as are manifest in the physical world, whether through laws pertaining to music, home ties, philosophy, or of psychic forces. All, as is seen, are then as One, and must be studied in the way and manner that will give the more perfect understanding. Then, as recognized by the consciousness of the entity in viewing that as is seen, in part there is gained that full knowledge as is necessary, that the whole oneness of the forces as are manifest are to be made a oneness with the individual, [900], in its action, whether pertaining to stocks, to bonds, to home ties, to philosophy, to those present, or those who only reach through the veil and give the entity that sustaining strength necessary, as it were, to CARRY ON, and grow more and more, and in that way which will give the better understanding and be able and capable of giving to the many peoples that which is to become the staff of life, that green field in the troubled soul, that still water in the heart of him who is weary, that river and water of life to the thirsty one who would seek to find that Home, that Way, that Directing Force, that will lead on to that higher Heavenly Home, to which all seek to be One with Him, the Creator of All.

Then, as the lessons are given, as the numbers are sought, and as the forces in the mental of the body is seeking those, let this be that in the mind FIRST: Seek that knowledge, that way, that brings the understanding, and the entity will acquire, will gain, same. Though there be gainsayings, there be tempestuous waves, this will lead ON and ON to the more perfect way.

6. (Q) Does this mean L & N is now going to 175 or 180? (A) When the combinations are set, made, in that manner, these will rise to 175 or 180. These, as we see, have to do with other conditions, as is seen by the answers and by the questions as given - will, that as we see from the other forces - here, see? L & N - advance to 137 and the fraction - 3/8 - 7/8. Then has begun the gradual decline to 132, with the general trend again in the buying - as we see occur in the near future - to-day, to-morrow, see? will advance again to the 136 - 3/4, see? Then we will find the general sliding off a few points, or a fraction, until the combines have been made in which there will either be the great rise, through the combinations, or the great fall to those numbers as have been given, for this must come as well as the rise, see?

7. (Q) Does it refer to L & N stock itself or its subsidiary, Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis R.R., of which Cole [Whiteford R. Cole?] is president, or to both? (A) L & N - though we find their subsidiaries (as is seen. see?) will have its [their] influence, and these subsidiaries will also have their fluctuations, for from these sources we will find the combinations will come.

8. (Q) What is the inference regarding Southern? (A) This, as we see, breaking off at the present, yet with the general trend or rise as we shall have, see? breaking off to the 113 - 113 1/4 - 14 -15 - 19, see? Well that this be covered, see?

9. (Q) Co-relate the brother’s vision of Southern R.R. and this vision.

(A) These, as we see, are the combination of mental and of the study, and may not be co-related in this respect, see? As refer to stocks, individually, these may be co-related. Not with the lessons as are to be gained by entity from same. As to stocks and their prices, and their Spirit in same, see? the co-relation of this is that as was seen by brother. The action should have been taken concerning same, as was seen - though the brother sees the combine, he sees the off, or the selling on same - should have been sold then, when reached 119, see? The present action of the condition, hold for the advance to the 15 and above before getting out - then clean out!

10. (Q) [137], [140], [136], and many of us were back in my Bachelor Apartment playing poker or 21. As we played I suddenly recalled to all that I no longer rented that apartment and that someone else rented it. “Suppose they should come home?” asked [140], at which [4313] looked across and and grinned. “We’ll have to get out before they do,” I replied, “but we can play on - guess they won’t come for a while yet - it’ll be alright I suppose.” After a while the Chinese butler entered. “You know,” I said to him, “I don’t own this apartment any more.” “No, I know you don’t,” he answered. I felt sort of out of place. “Their car is coming,” warned the butler - “They are coming.” “We have got to get out of here quickly,” I called and with that there was a chaotic rush for coats, hats, wraps, etc., and a panicky rush down the steps to the front entrance. “If we can only get down the stairs a ways,” I thought, “They will never know we may be coming from their apartment - for all they will know we may be coming from any of the apartments - but we must get out before they reach their own apartment, or we are sunk.” As we rushed pell mell down the stairs, [140] and [4313] laughed loudly, and out of the front door, we passed the new tenants just coming in the door. They regarded us suspiciously, but as I had concluded, they didn’t know for sure that we came from their own apartment, so as they started upstairs we made a dash for our automobiles. I seemed to have difficulty in finding our car in the dark night, and all were gone by the time [136] and I spotted the tail light of a car - jumped in and escaped. (A) In this there is presented to the entity those conditions as are seen in the life and understanding of the entity, [900], at present. That is, the present conditions, the present actions of entity should not be judged by past conditions, existences, circumstances, see? for as is seen, the entity visions self and others in the apartment playing, or taking part in those old conditions that enter into the make-up of the environs of the entity, see? The knowing within self that entity had left such, recognizing then the conditions, there is then the attempt to escape, or to view things from the new or the present circumstances and conditions of entity, see? Then, as is seen, there enters the Chinese butler, see? This then shows the study, the seeking into those old laws, or those conditions as pertain to the studies of the entity at the present time. The warning that is given by this shows how that the entity finds in self that reason that would be passing through the minds of others in the escape, see? This, then, the lesson: Judge present conditions, circumstances, actions, environs, whether pertaining to social, moral, religious, or stocks, by that lesson already gained in the inmost being of entity, see? and not by those of former conditions, see? for through this means will the escape or the full understanding come, though even by that of the darkness; yet the broad light will be shed abroad, will the entity but [if the entity will but] gain that perfect understanding of SELF FIRST and ITS APPLICATION IN THIS LIFE.

Dear Edgar,

First let me introduce Miss [183] who is typing this letter and also my work. In official capacity she probably may be termed the stenographic department of the New York City division of our Institute for Psychic Research.

This is the first opportunity I have gotten to answer your letters of recent date, and also to express any version I may have on recent readings of yourself. It would seem to me that it might well include all of us in calling for more of the spiritual attitude, and, above all, greater faith, for I have no doubt that the faults exhibited in one of us are common to all of us, in a greater or lesser degree. For example, it is difficult to answer the question of why we are caused to sacrifice as we have been recently in the market, in order that we may learn the fundamental truths of life. I know that such an attitude is like blaming an automobile for an accident, when in reality it is the fault of an inexperienced driver. Not that we have used the information contrary to that given in the readings, but that we have not yet comprehended the fundamentals behind that given. That is, that caution in the physical world is necessary if harm is not to be experienced in quick changes that may come in the phenomenized condition of life, whether that change be in regard to the action of the stock market, in the social world, etc. The important thing is that we all learn that life in its every relation is but a phenomenized form of elemental life, and that, as William James says “When we learn how to fulfill the demands of God, we fulfill our deepest destiny,” or, as he puts it again “In opening ourselves to His influence our deepest destiny is fulfilled.” Then, the success of our life depends, principally, upon the degree to which we have opened our minds and our hearts to Gods’ will, and express our concept of that will in our daily lives. That is the measure of real success, and I do feel that our attitude, and this goes for all of us, in the matter of these recent losses, should be “Even so Father it seems good in Thy sight, so be it!” It is easy to line up on the side of the argument that since financial loss has resulted and thereby, possibly, some physical loss, and a putting at a greater distance our Institute that there is something unsound in the truths we are endeavoring to uncover. However, the first error in this conclusion is that the concept is wrong, rather than the elemental truth, as illustrated above. And the second error is that we are measuring the success of the work as the phenomenized mind usually measures the success of life: That is, by the possession of worldly good. However, this measure is as false, untrue or unreal, as the phenomenized mind is itself. Or, to put it differently, it is better to learn, even if sacrifice is necessary, and gain the reward from the Father in heaven, than never to learn and gain the reward of man’s approval in the accumulation of world’s goods, here on earth. I doubt very much if the great philosophers, prophets and wise men who suffered physical want, ever envied in their own peace, self satisfaction and inner joy, the power and luxuries of the rich men of their day. So much for all of us.

Now for your individual reading [294-47] with regard to your own spiritual attitude, let me say that I am hardly one to even remark on such a subject. And it is probably none of my business to do so. That the above described attitude in relation to [137]‘s and my considerable loss in the proper attitude probably answers one third of the problem. The next third regarding your own prayer is as I said above, not for me to comment on. But I will submit the following quotation from William James which may help you, as it did me. - “The sub-conscious self is nowadays a well accredited psychological entity; and I believe that in it we have exactly the meditating term required.” “But in it many of the performances of genius seem also to have their origin; and in our study of conversion, of mystical experiences, and of prayer, we have seen how striking a part invasious from this (‘sub-conscious’) region play in the religious life.” We have learned that this invasion plays a part in all of life, whether it pertain to financial, social or other phases of life. In another part of the book William James states that in the prayer state, or in the faith state, physical man finds himself permeated by a power, a force, an an inspiration which, although he cannot cognize, he nevertheless feels even as he feels the presence of heat. For my humble self I might say that in every phase of my life I surely need this power and this inspiration, which, together with the wisdom so desired by all of us, makes up that portion of sustenance by which man lives, and which portion was termed by the Master as words proceeding out of the mouth of God. So, regarding the seeming physical troubles of the past, I would say, “forget it!” For the present we might take the motto of Longfellow “Excellsior,” and as for the future, obey the words of the Master when he said “sufficient unto the day are the needs; have no thought of the to-morrow.” If this last quotation is not worded exactly right it is the fault of my poor memory, but you undoubtably know the quotation I am trying to blunder out. Personally, I like to originate my own prayers, for then they come from my most inner self, and preclude the habit-forming sort of prayer that is said merely in machine-like fashion. What I mean is that if we do not understand our prayer, the meaning of the prayer, and the faith and hope that goes with prayer, then all the stereotyped prayer or conventional going to Church is of little avail. The Old Testament says “God is in His heaven, all is right with the world,” and if my physical mind attempts to rebel in concurring with this assertion, then from the power derived from faith and prayer, I secure the will and wisdom to know that this is a correct conclusion.

I have not really meant to write a sermon, but you know when I get going on these subjects how it seems I try to co-relate about everything I have read. In other words, I try to cook a whole meal in one pot. And if my seasoning in the above has been poor then throw the contents where it belongs, rather than try to swallow an unsavory dish.

R4. 11/9/25 EC’s letter to Mr. [900]:

I guess I’ll steal a little time this morning and try and answer yours of the 6th. First, I’ll acknowledge your introduction to Miss [183] but as I suggested over the phone the other day, please tell her how to spell CAYCE! for, as you remember, we are “sticklers” for the correct spelling of our name, for there must be something in Numerology and there would be a vast deal of difference between C A Y C E and C A S E Y. I’m glad, however, that you have one in the capacity of stenographer for the New York City division of Institute of Psychic Research, for we are needing to get out some letter or information to our friends over the county, of WHY we are in Virginia Beach. I’m sure of that, for I’m certain we mustn’t forget that end of our work that we have to do, and it is often times the little leaven that leaveneth the whole lump, rather than a large quantity pitched in at once.

Thank you very much for your letter regarding the interpretation of the dream, also the nice kindly, brotherly, manner in which you view the nice gentile “bawling out” that I received regarding my own spiritual development, or attitude, at the present time. I believe you have already seen, from the last one that I sent you [294-48], that there is also just as much, or more, condemnation in self-condemning as there is in arrogancy. It is the even keel that makes the most lasting and the most thorough progress in every phase of man’s development.

Inactivity is just as bad or worse as the wrong activity regarding any subject, condition or circumstance. I’m sure we all need a closer application to the Spiritual Forces from Within, whether it’s regarding the normal physical life or any phenomenized condition of same, as relates to individuals or things.

I have never read William James, but your quotations from same are certainly wonderful, and I think “hit the spot.” For it is certainly true, “In opening ourselves to His influence, our deepest destiny is fulfilled.” Or, to put this in another form, “In opening ourselves to His influence, we make ourselves an at-oneness with Him. The recent circumstances have certainly made me “Stop - Look and Listen” and I suppose this is as necessary in the life of individuals, any of them, who feel they are trying to do the right thing as it is to the one who gives little or no thought to same. But we are all prone to measure success by wordly standards. Yes, it is certain that we all need to spend more time in prayer, for though we may feel that we are trying to live a prayer in each action of our daily lives, when we consider for a moment that He Who Made HIMSELF One With the Father’s WILL, often separated HIMSELF from those who were wont to express their physical love for Him, and as He went out alone, it was to pray to the Father in Heaven. Then, how often we find the prophets are called aside, even in waste places, that they might commune in Spirit with the Divine Spirit and gain strength and an understanding, that they could not have done, even though they were HIS Prophets. Then how much more should we, as humble human beings, seek to find in supplication to Him, and empty ourselves of our ourselves, that the Spirit of Him may enter in.

No, I appreciate your writing me as you have, and as you often do, for I feel, [900], that it is as the counsel of brother to brother, and that each are seeking to know His Will, seeking to have access to the FACE that would say, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many,” for I’m sure we will never be able to reach that place without the assistance from our fellowman, for in that He gave His Spirit into the world, in the form of human flesh, certainly shows us that it is through our fellowman, our brothers, that we would climb up again to that At-Oness with Him, that makes us all One with the Father.

I’m in hopes things are going good with you to-day. I received your letter this morning, with the one regarding the debate between physical and subconscious. We have an appointment, however, for a physical reading, which will necessarily have to be taken, but we’ll get to this as soon as possible. I also had your wire last night, regarding the one mailed yesterday. I presume I will have that this evening, if not in time for the evening reading, we will get the other one and that one just as early as possible in the morning. We’ll try to keep up with these as near as we can, yet we find that we are little by little falling behind with some that we have - but we’re doing everyone that we feel we’re physically able to carry through, without doing ourselves and the others we may be of help to, an unjustice.
