This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 18th day of July, 1935, in accordance with request made by the self - Miss [954], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Miss Lillian Barclay.

Born November 8, 1897, just before 9 P.M., … St., N.W., Washington, D.C. Time of Reading 3:45 to 4:40 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City. (Life Reading Suggestion)

1. EC: Yes, we have the entity now known as or called [954].

2. In entering the present experience we find the entity coming under some adverse as well as benevolent aspects of the astrological sojourns, as well as innate those experiences in the earth that may show the karmic influence which is in the experience of many.

3. In giving that interpretation of the records here, it may be well that the sources be considered, that there may be an application in the experience of the entity in the present to make for such information being of aid or help at this time.

4. Life IS! Each soul is an offspring of the Creative Force called God, and is innately - and manifestedly by application - the result in the experience of how or the manner it has manifested that prerogative of will.

5. The soul IS, and lives on; making its record in the building influence, or that stream in the experience of the body, the mind, the soul, called the mental life of an entity.

6. Entity, then, is the soul in its spiritual form, the mental body in or of its mental form, the physical that is the material manifestation of the two in the earth experiences.

7. How may one see and know these, then? Only through the turning within and recognizing those influences in self’s experience.

8. These then may become as the phenomenon of life by the application in the experience of the attributes of the spirit, that which IS creative. Love, hope, charity, all those things that make for the BUILDING of that called hope, faith, into the experience of an entity, a mind, a soul, a body, through those USAGES of same.

9. When these are turned into self-indulgences, or habits that bespeak of same in any form of manifestation, they become that which must be met as karmic influences. Then the body is subject to same in its relationships with its fellow man, by the very essence of that awareness or the conscious consciousness OF same in the experience.

10. As to this entity’s urges, then, that arise from sojourns in the environments about the earth:

11. Why, it may be asked, does an entity from one experience find itself aware or conscious in that environ called Venus, or Jupiter, or Mars, or Saturn, or Mercury, Uranus or Neptune, the Sun, the Moon, or ANY of the environs about the earth that have their position in this PARTICULAR solar system?

12. Each of these conditions or places named becomes as an element that partakes of the characteristics of the mind, the body, the mental forces of those who experience same; and has been accredited with certain influences.

13. For those having seen (not by the physical eye, but as these records are read) that which has been the experience of an entity, a soul, or the mind of an entity in those environs, may see and comprehend the forms that arise as urges innate and manifested in the experience of a given entity.

14. Hence such are accredited or given to indicate certain characteristics in a given entity. Yet let this be understood: NO EXPERIENCE, no urge, no environ, may be greater than the WILL OF an entity. For the will, the soul and the will, made one with Him - the Creative Force as is promised IN Him - may overcome, may change, may alter that which may come to pass in the experience.

15. Hence such forces or influences are merely INDICATIONS of what WOULD happen, as the effect OF a cause, if there is not the application of the will towards the spiritual or the creative influence.

16. But as to what this or any entity may do is another question!

17. We find this entity, then, coming under the influence of Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, Uranus, Neptune. In the order named, it might be said, do the influences arise in the experience; yet they are EVER as an heterogeneous influence in the experience.

18. From Venus we have the influence of making friendships easily; for those experiences good and bad, according to the evaluation the entity or soul has put upon an experience in its dealings and associations with individuals in the MATERIAL affairs, the MATERIAL experiences, MATERIAL expressions of LOVE, faith, hope, in their relationships one to another. Those things entering in that are called the biological experience of a body are EMOTIONS, and not of the soul. In the usage of same they may make for an environ that may stir up, may belittle, may undo, much of that which is prompted in the experience - but are of the earth-earthy.

19. Jupiter makes for the great expanse of experience, the periods in the experience of the entity that would be called or termed by some “lucky periods.”

20. And as we find, while the last three to five years have been in an ADVERSE influence from the Jupiterian experience, beginning with April of the present year and lasting for a period of three to five years for this entity, there should be rather the BENEVOLENT influences. So, the associations, the affiliations of the entity with INDIVIDUALS will be more satisfying or more of a satisfactory nature in its material expression. But this is dependent, to be sure, upon what the entity as an ENTITY does ABOUT same. However, the OPPORTUNITIES, the experiencing of opportunities will be the more numerous for a benevolent influence in its associations. This is in reference to the material world as related to finances, the social life, and the abilities for the analysis of conditions and experiences - in which the entity is gifted.

21. The experience from Mercury makes for high mental abilities, the visioning, and the abilities to picturize or visualize those things in the experience of others that may make for the emotions arising in the activities of individuals.

22. And these influences combined should make for that wherein the entity should succeed.

23. Hence the story writing, the book that it may write during the next two and a half or three years or five years, should be the GREATER in its ability to be of value in the experiences of others FOR GOOD!

24. The Uranus influence with Neptune makes for water and those recently crossing bodies of water to be of those vibrations in their activities as to be of special interest and of value to the experience of the entity.

25. Also the interest in SPIRITUAL things and those promptings of same in the experience of individuals.

26. This information may be rather a conglomerate mass at first. “THINK on these things.”

27. For here ye may find not only the key to thine nature but that which may unlock the mysterious mysteries of life itself in relationship to thy dealing with thy fellow man.

28. What, then?

29. When grudges, when anxieties, when those things that make for barriers in thine relationships to thy fellow man are held as a portion of thine inner self, it builds barriers to the best that thou mayest accomplish in thine experience.

30. And truly hath He said, Love thine enemies, those even that would do thee harm, those that would abuse thee, those that would use thee. Love them as we love thyself. For in so doing ye create, through the creative energies and forces of the power of Right, the ability to succeed over those things that are of error or of belittlement in such measures that not only does the life and its experiences become more and more beautiful, but there are the abilities to mete to thy fellow man those judgements that may give THEM hope; that they, too, may see the sunlight of love upon the hills of their experience, and taking hope may bless thee in thine own life!

31. Seek and ye shall find; knock and it shall be opened unto you.

32. As to the appearances in the earth, these - as we find - have a definite place, a definite urge in the experience of the entity; in that the like and dislikes that arise in the emotional nature of the body-physical at times come, as it were, from those experiences in the earth - that INFLUENCE in the present. Not that all are given here, but those that have builded much in this way and manner in the present. Then:

33. Before this we find the entity lived in the earth during those periods when there were the formings of the ideals and ideas for the separations from the motherland, or England, through oppressions that were both material and had their concept in the selfishnesses of others.

34. The entity then was among those people in and about what is now known as or called Williamsburg (Williamstown). In that experience the entity was then in close associations with SOME of those who rose later to be powers in the formation of the ideas and ideals of the land, now known as thine OWN motherland.

35. Then in the name Jennie Williams, the entity was in closer association with the foundations of the schools, or the school that was and is a portion of that environ. The entity dealt rather with that portion of same which gathered data to be sent to the varied other groups or colonists that had to do with the UNITED strength necessary for the throwing off of its allegiance to the other lands.

36. In the experience in the mental the entity gained, much of that held in the innate self as resentment for either intentional wrongs or imaginative wrongs in the associations with groups or those in authority, or those in high positions.

37. There arises also in the present much from that sojourn the abilities of the entity in the teaching, the writing, the conversationalist, the gathering of data or the statistician, the mathematician. These arise from those experiences as innate, MENTAL-PHYSICAL forces that arise and also urges and effects of the conditions in the experience of the entity.

38. If these are conceived and grown in the SPIRITUAL import, rather than of self, they will make for the harvest of the spiritual truths. And the spiritual truths give material manifestations in more of the beautiful things in life in the earth. Not of ease altogether, but satisfaction, blessedness and the beauty of life becomes more and more apparent in the experience by their usage.

39. Before that we find the entity was in that period just after the Prince of Peace came into the land.

40. The entity was then of the Galilean land, of a Samaritan peoples that were misunderstood by their Jewish neighbors, by their associations in the theological experiences and the power of state in Rome.

41. Hence we find oft in the experience of the entity in the present it has been a disliker of some influences in the Jewish experiences of others; and yet holding to much that from a SPIRITUAL import has been and is the finer self of those peoples as a race.

42. Also there have been those experiences when communistic thought has been a portion of the entity’s urge latent within; and the study of the communistic thoughts and free experiences of others becomes a portion of the entity’s inner urge. There is the dislike of those that show their pomp, their power, because of their position, either political, social or from money.

43. These come from that experience. Yet that innate urge has come from the quieting, by the closer communion with the inner self, from those lessons the entity - as Patricia in that experience - gained from those who had been in the company with Him who walked in Galilee. If THIS is magnified in the experience it may bring a NEW hope, a new purpose, a new experience in the inner self and the outward manifestation of same - to the entity.

44. HOLD FAST, then, to the faith that is latent within, and to that of thy MOTHER FAITH!

45. Before that we find the entity was in that now known as or called the Egyptian experience, when there were the disseminatings of the truths that had been and were being correlated by the teachers of many lands; in the first seminaries, in the diffusion of the powers and forces of men and women.

46. The entity then, in the name Ileano, made for the greater advancement in its EARTHLY experience, through the dissemination of those tenets that the Priest and those of that period had given and did give to many peoples.

47. Then the entity was what would today be termed a reporter of many activities in many lands; going to those people in Abyssinia, Persia, India, Mongolia, Carpathia, Portugal, and Atlantis just before the destruction.

48. So the entity finds in the present that things of travel are of interest, and especially those partaking of the motivative forces towards the home life of the peoples in and under varied environs - both from their home life and from their religious life. These become from that experience the leading thoughts in the entity’s application of same.

49. Keep those in the experience that make for constructive forces through the application of the fruits of the spirit: Faith, hope, fellowship, kindness, gentleness. And put away those things that easily beset, pressing on to the mark of the higher calling as set in Him who has promised to meet thee in thine inner temple. Pray oft; not to a God far away, but for the wakening of the I AM Presence within thine inner self where He has promised to meet thee.

50. Keeping these, and in this manner, ye may meet thy problems; yet may come to know the greater love, the greater understandings in thine experience.

51. Ready for questions.

52. (Q) Can I make good at fiction? (A) Can! And especially that phase showing the characterizations in the home and the prompting towards the spiritual life.

53. (Q) How and where should I contact with current manuscripts? (A) Through those regular channels that are set for same are the better influences or better channels for the assurance of their proper consideration, if such channels are well chosen. How may ye choose?

Enter into thine inner self and seek.

54. (Q) How can I arrange time and physical strength to do more writing of my own as differentiated from business? (A) By budgeting the time in all things. This is well. While thy life, thy experiences are orderly in part, if there are the regular periods given for the work, the play, the recreation, the entertainment, the activities in all the various phases of necessary experiences, these will find their place in the experience.

55. (Q) Should I strive for new full time business connections, dropping present ones? (A) Not in the immediate present. Rather try out THIS (that is, what has been indicated for the self here); holding fast to those new associations BEING made.

56. (Q) Shall I persevere in the surprising new contact just made with Norman Moore? (A) This is well. Hold fast to same. Do not rely too greatly upon same until the surer footing is established.

57. (Q) Shall I build a house on my mountain? (A) In the latter portion of ‘36 this may be considered seriously, but not until after the 16th of September of that year.

58. That is all the questions.

59. Let the light of His countenance guide thee. He, thy Lord, is willing; if ye will put your body, your mind, your abilities as a CHANNEL of expression of and for Him.

Monday,

Mr. Edgar Cayce, Virginia Beach, Va.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

Last night when I came home from my mountain your wonderful message was waiting for me. I recognize it all…all of the bad if we must measure it that way…and the good, too. I can only say a thank you out of my heart…at this moment… but more another time if you wish. As I read, it was as if some all seeing teacher was talking to me…someone who did not care about the secret places through which I’d whipped myself…but someone who wished only to heal the poor scars.

Weird as the reincarnation theories seem to my material mind, they hit more truly than you know. You ought to see me (taking a check of Hearst’s) and cursing him aloud in this very “Cathedral” he built (replica of Rheims.) There’s bitterness and weakness in me…yes…if I find anything more, I’ll let you know. I keep wanting to do poetry just now…but I haven’t any idea that it’s any good… I’ve never considered myself a poet. But this time I’m putting it down anyway…instead of only thinking it…or only scratching it into the waste basket.

New York City

Dear Mr. Cayce:

How more than kind of you to write me a letter with your own hand. Why not dictate to Miss Gladys? The machine is a barrier unless easily and quickly used.

I’ve sometimes thought there is a reservoir of goodness where all the little kindnesses that men do one another are put in drop by drop and kept. Maybe there is…maybe YOU draw upon this ample fund. I’m sure I don’t know. I only know that I was ahungred and you fed me…thirsty and you gave me drink.

Look on these enclosures…probably they are unfinished… I am not even trying to analyze things now. Try to imagine from these bits of verse how great was the need that has gone on almost forty years thinking these things…dreaming them …and many, many others…yet never daring even to put them down…thinking them unworthy. As I look on them this morning they seem beautiful. I can’t be sure. I never shall be sure…but now I can TRUST. Someone will know sometime whether they are good, and in the meantime I must put them down.

Consider if you will (whether you like or understand these things or not) that most of them were done within the past few days…that they run dripping off my pencil point, as if I am only a medium…and have only to relax to let them come. I have rebuked beauty in my heart before this time…but no more…never any more. Then try to imagine what this expression means to a spirit so long pent. I know you must doubt yourself often…that you have suffered much, for I heard of it and wished because of that to meet you. And my doubts of ME have been beyond your imaginings. That is the reason for the emphasis in the first part of my reading…LIFE IS.

These are only a few of the things that are coming to me so readily just now. I am doing some very personal things …partly as the result of a most peculiar contact, mentioned in my reading. And even a little group of children’s verses. It’s all odd… I am convinced, though, as I write that these are not ends in themselves but preparation for something. Maybe we shall know before long.

Call on me for whatever comes to your mind. I shall write again soon. I still do not wish to pause to analyze my reading. I’ve done too d… much analyzing in my life.

FOR A DAUGHTER

The earth stopped whirling and flattened round me into a level plain That I might see my sheer impertinence in being. Dear Miss [954];-

Thanks for yours of the 27th, the poetry is very beautiful, I would have to say, personally it is only here and there that poetry appeals to me, I think I appreciate it, but often wonder how it is that some get such beauty from same when I do not, so don’t know that I am competent to judge, appreciate more than you know your sending these to me, for I like them very much, some more than others, the thought in the first in the first one, “Shout” is especially appealing to me, “Soul Shake” and too a Daughter are lovely. And I am very sure they will lead on and on and on to greater and yet greater things. Miss [954]; as you expressed it, “I only Know” well that is my special weakness “if” I can feel that people get that angle to my feeble efforts, then I feel that I have at least tried, and I am one of those simple ones that believe with all my heart God counts the TRY as righteousness, so thank you thank you.

Please drop me a line now and then and hope you will send any lines that you would like for me to see, I like them very much, and will always give you my honest reaction, can’t say that I am justified in saying that I have an opinion.

DR. HEREWARD CARRINGTON ON THE WORK OF EDGAR CAYCE - by [954]

Dr. Hereward Carrington, outstanding authority on psychic phenomena, and known in Europe as “that terrible enemy of fraudulent mediums in America” finds the psychic work of Edgar Cayce entirely genuine.

Dr. Carrington Says:

“My belief in Mr. Cayce’s sincerity and in the integrity of his purpose is absolute.

“As a scientist, I would find that all diagnoses and prescriptions purported to come from Mr. Cayce do not in fact come from him, but come from some higher intelligence manifesting itself through him. I am not prepared to say what that higher intelligence is.

“Psychology now recognizes two parts of the mind, the conscious and the subconscious, both accepted now as part of any human being, but with the subconscious recognized only within the past fifty years through the work of Freud, Myers, Adler, and others. Certainly the conscious mind of a man, uneducated in medicine, could not produce even the technical terms which come through Mr. Cayce, and the same goes for the subconscious. Dr. Carrington’s investigations of telepathy, clairvoyance, hypnotism and spiritualistic mediums cover a period of thirty-six years. For three years he has acted as director of the American Psychic Institute.

He is author of the recently published “Loaves and Fishes” which explains the miracles of Christ in the light of modern scientific knowledge. Previous books are “The Story of Psychic Science”, “Modern Psychical Phenomena,” and “Your Psychic Powers and How to Develop Them.”

The other day Miss [954] called on me, and I learned from her for the first time about the shameful treatment you had received in Detroit. She is one of your staunch supporters, and will do all she can on your behalf in the papers, I know.

I gave her interview and some ideas at the time she was here, which I think she will use on your behalf, and she may write you about this herself. If there is anything further I can do I shall of course be only too pleased to do so. I suppose you have seen the reviews of “Loaves and Fishes,” which have appeared occasionally? The book is being published in England next month, and should go there, as there is a big controversy raging at present between the bishops and the spiritualists on these questions!

My dear Teacher:

Needless to say you are much in my mind these days, and I send you this letter to let you know it in more concrete form. I do hope you will like the publicity material I prepared, in the event that any is to be used. Dr. Carrington has been most cooperative. These matters do not interest you so much, but Hugh Lynn and I felt it very worthwhile to have something ready. I shall look eagerly forward to learning how he uses the various pieces …and only wish I were with you to manage this end of it.

My thoughts will be winging along toward you on Tuesday next …and so will those of many others, as you well know. For although your talent puts you into a lonely class in one way it brings you returns in the form of “human interest” that few persons in the world can draw on.

I continue to be so grateful for all the new world you have opened to me…although weak in many ways and with the constant feeling that I should be able to do more. [1087]‘s Mother’s improvement is beyond your powers of imagination… excellent as those are. Still tied indoors, she makes continual efforts to cooperate and to broaden her interests. And all this is thanks to you.

Every good thought and love to all who are with you…as they know…presume Gladys and Mrs. Cayce are there, too. Hope so.

… St., A Sunday morning…

My dear Teacher:

The first quiet spot in a turbulent period…filled at once with joy and with a madness of work. Do you know that yesterday marked a great anniversary for me…a year ago yesterday you took my reading. Surely, I know you cannot see results in me as yet…but I see them. And I want to express to you just a little of what it has meant to know you…and to receive from you the kind of understanding you have so freely given, both in your conscious and in your higher state. Bear with me yet a little while, for I am coming into a new strength that will make me truly useful, although outward signs may seem otherwise.

Those days in Virginia Beach are like a dream now…did we truly live through all that beauty? Those dripping words that came and came and came…so filled with wisdom and so satisfying to the spirit. And that strange sweet comradeship that I felt for so many there…[256] of the luminous eye… and the lost blonde lady [338] who isn’t lost anymore…and [543]…little [543]. Could anyone see [543] and not hold her in the heart to comfort her? [903] took on new facets to me, too. And walking down the road with little [773] I found that he loves “Mr. Cayce as far as the stars…”

Yet these things are but a small part of the joys I owe to your generosity. The weeks since I have returned have put me to heavy tests and pressures that have been almost unbelievable. Yet my benefit party is over…a fair success carried entirely on my slim shoulders…and without any bitterness or shouting because I got no help…My extra stint of work presumably is over tomorrow. Then I slide into a more regular existence…ready to do something about Mother’s increasingly difficult problems.

I feel so strong (I cannot boast that I am without pain…but STRONG) that I have just written Mrs. [587] asking that I be allowed to come to see her out there on Long Island…Five months ago I could not have dreamed of taking on that extra effort in the evening. Having seen her I shall have taken a final step on the copy I have thus far prepared on Atlantis. Yes, I am slow…and I have been weighed down…but eventually I shall come through.

This letter brings my grateful thanks to you…and to all around you…Mrs. Cayce, Hugh Lynn, and Gladys…

As for me…I can only see this light…that through your first instructions I have found more peace and beauty than I had ever hoped for. I can speak of God now…a year ago I could not even do that. YOU understand, I know. This was the thing I needed…this understanding of something stranger and truer and better than I was or could ever be…and I rejected and rejected and so bitterly…until I found you. I used to think I would find it in human beings…in one human being…but I learned better through bitter trial and error. There are no human beings who are stronger…or even truer…than I am myself. I had to find some more perfect power outside…

My dear Teacher:

The last bulletin told me that my dear Gatekeeper [Leslie B. Cayce] had gone. But it was not until Hugh Lynn told me something of the circumstances that I realized how doubly hard the passing had been for you. Sometimes I rebel… I cannot understand how this man, who tried so hard and who to my way of thinking achieved so much in growth while he was here…rated that extra suffering of burns and shock.

My contract with you Father was so apparently slight but so real to me. I always see him opening the door to me that first day…BEFORE I knocked. And I remember short conversation last summer when he came in unexpectedly and sat in the office with me. He spoke of how people do not stop to understand and how they make each other so unhappy when they so easily do just the opposite. There was maturity and understanding in what he said…and I think of them today as I find myself wondering at certain deep hurts which I suffer…hurts which seem so unnecessary and so foolishly short-sighted that I am at a loss as to how to meet them. I sit and search my own heart, as I am sure your Father must often have done in the later years when he ripened.

You will miss him. But I feel you are so especially blessed in that you may see life going on in a rich stream. Talking with Hugh Lynn this trip, I find in him more courage and a stronger grip…and I am so grateful for it for your sake. I love the boy for his earnestness…for his sincere dedication to the same ideal which his Mother has so closely held during all these years…many of them suc h hard ones. You are blessed to have these around you…and it makes me glad for you…poor in pennies but rich in realities.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

Here comes a skeptical lamb into your fold. Will you help me, if you can.

Oddly enough I am asking for a life reading immediately, for I need so much to learn which way lies forward in my work…and whether I can work out some change at this time which will make it possible for me to utilize certain definite talents to my own good rather than to the good of Mr. Hearst…whose policies I despise. It is therefore special stress on the mental side of me that I am hoping to have.

I am able to corral twelve dollars at this time…oddly enough a hold-over from a gift which I’ve been misering. The rest will follow, as this agreement suggests.

Since I work like a fiend all day, would it be at all possible for you to give this reading either early in the morning (by early I would mean six standard time)…or in the evening around eight…with the morning much to be preferred. I only ask this because I am at my office or heavily occupied at other times…but might arrange for free time if necessary.

No matter what you accomplish for me…or do not accomplish …I shall continue to count you among my big experiences. I meet so many and find them wanting…
