This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 24th day of May, 1928, in accordance with request made by his father - Mr. [4124].

1. EC: Yes, we have the body here - [960]. This we have had before. Many changes have taken place since last we had this. Most are for improvements, though there is NOT the change as should be with that as has been given for the correction of conditions. Ready for questions.

2. (Q) What caused the boy’s defective hearing? (A) That as has been outlined - the combination of conditions.

3. (Q) Has the condition of the Eustachian tube and auditory center been corrected? (A) No, not entirely. Not in the manner as has been OUTLINED for it. These have been assisted. There is shown improvement in the condition, but this has not been done properly - else we would find there would be in the PHYSICAL change more reaction, more response, to the central nerve system. The changes as have been wrought have more to do with that of the center itself, than of those sympathetic BRANCHES of same in that region, see? Often hard to use a substitute for those conditions given!

4. (Q) How many treatments are needed to make same permanent? (A) This would be more permanent were the sympathetics more in accord with that being broken up, so that the DRAINS would be nearer normal. As has been given there is much to be accomplished in the psycho-effect of the body mentally for this condition to be permanent, or entirely relieved - see?

5. (Q) How many treatments should be given for the lumbar and cervical region? (A) Dependent upon the manner in which the corrections are made in that region, and in the region of the Eustachians - for this must be treated as a whole; not think that one portion can be done and get results unless each condition and portion of system coordinates one with another - for, as we have found with this body, the condition is as of a psychological or psycho-analytical effect, produced by conditions set up in the inner mental being, and the necessity OF the impressions for proper corrections for proper incentives as come to the entity as a BEING; as well as the physical conditions of the body - for one is as essential as another for a perfect coordinating system. Especially is this condition manifested, exemplified, seen, and would be shown conclusive of its one coordination were the conditions as given carried out in the intent or in the SPIRIT of that as has been given. Be not of weak-minded nor doubting in the ability of the permanency of the spiritual forces as are manifested through the entity, but remember - those as have given the expression of the element that progenerates the life in being, are as responsible AS the ENTITY, WHEN same IS in its or their charge - see?

6. (Q) Is it advisable for him to start at Peddie’s School this fall? [Hightstown, New Jersey] (A) Dependent upon the conditions as may exist at that period. These may be much better - these may be injured - by conditions from now TO then. As has been given, there may be builded that properly in the system that would bring about conditions where these could be carried forward in the proper way and manner. Whether at this individual school or one close to the home, through which the entity or being might obtain that as has been outlined for the body, depends upon the builded forces as manifest in and through the body.

7. (Q) Can we guide him through the subconscious forces while he is at Peddie’s Preparatory School and how? (A) Yes - AND HOW!

8. (After pause) That is all the questions.

9. Much may be said concerning the physical conditions and that as has been accorded the body for the correction of the physical defects in the body. This condition - this body - those conditions surrounded - present, as it were, a unique condition - a condition extraordinary. The whole of the condition may not be classed as a purely medical case, nor a purely mental case, nor a purely psychological case; yet, as given, each must have its portion in the development of the ENTITY - not physical body, but ENTITY - for the proper manifestation of physical forces through this body; yet these are one, and must be considered as being one, when properly coordinating. Treat this as such - not pass it up as, “Well, this will do just as well - ‘cause they SAID so’”. We are through for the present.

R1. 5/29/28 Father’s letter:

“My wife is still unsettled in her mind as to the meaning of some parts of the reading… We are not convinced of the meaning of the answer to the 2nd question [960-6, Par. 3-Q] re: the Eustachian tubes and auditory center having been corrected. He having been operated on by the originator of finger operations in osteopathy [Curtis H. Muncie, referred by Dr. Richardson?], we feel we placed him in charge of the best, the answer [960-6, Par. 3-A] says, ‘this has been assisted and shows improvement in the condition, but has not been properly done.’ Does this refer to the operation itself, or does it mean since he had not then been treated on the lumbar region that it was not properly done. He also says, ‘often hard to use a substitute for those conditions again.’ What concerns us so much at this time is, was the operation itself properly done, regardless of other treatment necessary thereto (which we are now taking up)?

“I am under the impression that our questions might have been misleading in so far, if an operation is to take place and then after treatments are necessary, together with other treatments, one might assume at the conclusion of all these necessary treatments, which might be said the operation was properly done.

“Perhaps we should not have said, ‘has the condition of the Eustachian tubes and auditory center been corrected?’ but rather ‘has the operation of his Eustachian tubes and auditory center so far been properly done?’

“The answer to Q-4 [960-6, Par. 6-A] is disturbing to me… does that reflect upon the operation recently undergone?

“In Q-5 [960-6, Par. 7-Q] the answer is ‘Yes and How.’ Is it possible that this question was disturbing to the reading, since the answer ‘and how’ is exactly as the question?

“The last paragraph is most interesting and my thought is that the two very last sentences beginning with ‘treat this as such’ and ending ‘because they said so’ might refer to the matter in which his mother and I recite each evening the words you wrote for us, and if you will recall you suggested that I might say them independent of his mother and not necessarily close to the body. Since there is so much in the reading referring to the spiritual, I feel that perhaps that which we say each evening, is not being done properly, for which I might be blamed…

“I also am of the opinion that the treatments of the lumbar region are indeed necessary and that perhaps after all the operations of the Eustachian tubes is of minor detail, and while I realize all three should be attended to individually, it would seem to me from all the readings, that adhering to the subconscious forces a treatment of the cervical and lumbar regions are of greater importance…”

R2. 8/28/28 Letter from father:

“During the entire month of July he received four treatments a week by this doctor [the one in Brooklyn who performed the operation], who suggested that he go to camp during the month of August. The boy writes me recently he does not know positively whether he hears better or not… I do wish that his mother and myself can look for some encouragement. We have practically carried out the reading, we both recite every night that which you gave us to say, have carried out with the doctor and are still continuing the treatments, so you can readily understand, having done our part at a very heavy expense, we are grasping for some encouragement and hope that we are doing the right thing.”
