This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Virginia, this 6th day of August, 1935, in accordance with request made by the husband - Mr. […], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by a friend of Mr. [257].
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. L. B. Cayce.]
Time of Reading 10:55 to 11:15 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Michigan. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes. Yes, we have the body, [981].
-
Now, as we find, much of that which disturbs the better physical functioning of this body has become more or less a constitutional condition. And there are many psychopathic conditions that enter in.
-
Yet, as we find, it would be much preferable for the body to have changes not merely in the environs or surroundings, in a manner, but the whole atmosphere.
-
For a long period of time conditions have been coming about which have produced in the body the attitude, “Well, there’s no use! Nothing’s going to do any good!”
-
This is from the very nature of the conditions, and yet the body has come to depend upon some applications that must necessarily hinder or impair from there being permanent CURATIVE powers or recuperative forces.
-
These effects arise, as we find, from some disorders that arose some time back; with first an intestinal disorder, then a disruption in the functioning of the organs of the pelvis. Then those changes wrought in the system through those applications at the time gradually brought impairments in the circulation. So, there are hindrances in the proper manner of locomotion, through the infectious forces that arise in the joints of the extremities; making for a hindrance in the character of the circulatory forces - that is, the blood supply, the lymph supply, the coordination between the blood supply and the lymph and emunctory circulation. These produce or bring about this stiffening, this soreness; these conditions that are of the arthritic nature, though they make for those disturbances as combined with the digestive forces also.
-
Then, these are the conditions as we find them with this body, [981] we are speaking of:
-
First we would make changes where there might be the applications through steam baths that would carry Atomidine (the atomic iodine). These would be with sweats, as the Class System, you see. Or, as we find, we would change the body to those surroundings with Wagner, at Dayton, Ohio.
-
Such cabinet steam baths would be given about twice a week. Following these we would have a rubdown with the oils that would be combined in this manner:
-
To 4 ounces of Russian White Oil as the base, add - in the order named:
Oil of Wintergreen…1 ounce, Oil of Cedar Wood…1 ounce, Oil of Pine Needles…1/4 ounce, Kerosene Oil…1/2 ounce, Oil of Sassafras…1/2 ounce.
These, to be sure, will separate; but shake well together before the massage is given, which would be over the lumbar area, in a circular motion; over the brachial area the same, but extending to the extremities from both the lumbar area and brachial area - to the toes and to the tips of the fingers, AWAY FROM the body, as a drawing; not so much a circular motion to the extremities but rather a patting and a drawing; massaging the oils well into the flesh, however.
-
Be mindful of the diets. These should be more of those things that make for the adding to the system of the necessary forces for the solving of the distortions in portions of the body; and to build up a blood supply that will make for resuscitating forces. This would be an outline, though - to be sure - it may be altered somewhat from that intimated, which at times has been good. This diet outline would be followed with the rest of the treatments. DO NOT take part of the treatments and leave off the rest! Either do ALL or none! See?
-
Mornings - citrus fruit juices. Combine lemon with orange juice, or grapefruit juice, or pineapple juice. Occasionally at the same meal there may be taken a gluten; such as whole wheat, or crushed wheat, or oats. For THIS body, take the gluten at the same meal with the citrus fruits; we need that fermentation which would arise. But let them be fifteen to twenty minutes apart. This makes better fermentation; produces a form of acidity at times, yes - but these are necessary for the proper activity through the duodenum and digestive forces, as we find them here.
-
These may be followed with a cereal drink, whole wheat wafers or whole wheat toast.
-
Occasionally the breakfast may be altered to fresh fruits, or canned fresh fruits; though not prepared with any preservative save the NATURAL means.
-
Milk may occasionally be taken at this period also.
-
Noons - the meats of ANY nature should only be of wild game; such as squab, squirrel, bird or fowl. These should always be THOROUGHLY parboiled and then broiled, when used. Lamb may be taken occasionally; the broth of same may be taken. But only the whole wheat or rye breads would be used.
-
Evenings - only first a raw vegetable, or a raw salad; then a very thoroughly cooked vegetable meal, with vegetables cooked in their OWN juices. They should be balanced with three grown above the ground to one grown below the ground.
-
These would be the characterizations necessary in the diet.
-
It will require consistent and persistent activity, not just for a week or a month, but for two, three, four or five months, before we would see the DEFINITE changes; though RELIEF would come after the second or third week.
-
But follow ALL of these suggested treatments for sixty days; then we would give further instructions.
-
Ready for questions.
-
We are through for the present.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. GD’s note: Send one copy of the Reading to Mrs. Mary Wagner, 54 Bellvue Apts., Dayton, Ohio, and enquire about making arrangements to send Mrs. [981] to her for treatment. Mrs. Wagner is in charge of a Health Institute (Class System), where - with especially trained operators - vapor mineral fume baths are given. Mrs. Wagner use to be associated with the Class System in Norfolk, Va., and is familiar with our work. I’m sure you will make no mistake in sending Mrs. [981] to her. Let us know when the treatments have been followed for sixty days, so that we may make an appointment for a Check Reading.
R2. 8/31/35 Husband’s letter to Mrs. Wagner: “I received a reading from Mr. Edgar Cayce of the Association for Research and Enlightenment about the 10th of August, in which he recommended you as the proper source for receiving treatment for Mrs. [981], …, Chicago.
“I would like to receive from you all information for possible arrangement for this treatment. Also your usual rates, for according to Mr. Cayce’s letter, it will require some time.
“Please understand that at the present time Mrs. [981] is what I would term a total invalid and will have to have personal attention of someone to assist her in all necessities.
“Frankly speaking, I am not entirely satisfied with Mr. Cayce’s reading and am writing him today.
“Hoping to hear from you by return mail, I am Cordially yours,”
R3. 8/31/35 Husband’s letter to Mr. Cayce: “In response to your letter of August 27th, referring to the physical reading of Mrs. [981] I want to state that I am not convinced as to your findings. I have had some of the best known specialists diagnose her condition and they were entirely different than yours. Is it possible that you got the reading of someone else and her’s mixed?
“I have written a letter today to Mrs. Wagner, who you recommended and am awaiting a reply from you both.”
R4. 9/4/35 EC’s letter: “In reply to yours of the 31st, I wish to advise that it is not unusual for a reading to differ with the findings of physicians; however, it IS unusual for a reading to describe conditions which apparently do not exist
- that is, conditions which cannot be verified and results obtained from following the suggestions made.
“It is not probable that your wife received someone else’s description, unless there was another by that same name at the address given during the hour set.
“We are just as interested in checking up on this as you are, being a research organization. Therefore, we would appreciate your giving us all the details possible as to just what the doctors find in your wife’s case; also as to the surroundings of your wife at the time of the reading. The reading, supposedly for your wife, was certainly very definite; and the conditions either do or do not exist. So, if it is in keeping with your wishes, upon receipt of this information from you we would like to attempt what we call a ‘Check Reading’ on the case and see wherein the fault lies, if there be any.
“Appreciating very much your letter, and trusting to have your full cooperation in helping us to follow this up, I am”
R5. 9/3/35 Mrs. Mary Wagner sent EC the 8/31/35 letter from Mrs. [981]‘s husband, asking him about the case.
R6. 9/9/35 EC ret’d the ltr., after copying it, saying that the reading “indicated that [981] had arthritis”.
R7. 9/16/35 Mrs. Wagner’s letter: “I have been out of this work for more than a year. My sister gives these same treatments at Muncie, Indiana and also takes house patients. I have written Mr. […] [[981]‘s husband] and gave him her address, also my confidence in the work there at Virginia Beach and my experience with arthritis and these treatments.”
