This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 14th day of December, 1936, in accordance with request made by the sister-in-law, Mrs. [313], through Active Membership of her husband in the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

Time of Reading 11:50 to 11:55 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Ala. (Physical Suggestion)

1. EC: Yes, we have the body, [1004].

2. As we find, while the conditions that cause the disturbance are advancing, helped by the use of the Radium to be sure, the application of the X-Ray as treatments now would be more effective than to use greater amount of the Radium. For to burn tissue in this condition, and with the applications that have been given, is only to break it down in such manners and measures as to shorten the resistance, to weaken the strength of the body.

3. Ready for questions.

4. (Q) Would an operation at this time be advisable, or would it spread the disease? (A) There is not sufficient resistance or proper quantity of coagulations in the system to prevent its spreading, if operative measures were taken.

We will find that longer resistance may be maintained without operative measures, though should the blood tests show that greater quantity of the gluten in the hemoglobins of the blood the operative forces might be preferable.

5. (Q) Is there danger of a hemorrhage? (A) Always, where tissue breaks and is coming always nearer and nearer to not only the veins but to the arteries. These become problems and must be, as has been indicated, seared off yet not burned or destroyed (the tissue) either with measures to overcome same or by the X-Ray.

6. (Q) Advise how to get doctors to cooperate with reading. (A) These are problems for individual consideration. The conditions that are existent may be given. As to how to change individuals’ minds, or to point them in given directions, is an individual CHOICE - and God Himself does not overcome will!

7. (Q) Would it be wise to change doctors? (A) Rather UNWISE in the existent conditions.

8. (Q) Should any Radium be given? (A) Not unless there is a greater amount of spread of the disease, as we find. The X-Ray is the better application in the present.

9. (Q) Could she be cured at the Astor Memorial Hospital in N.Y. City? (A) These become problems; as we find she would not be able to stand even the removal to same in the present. And the condition is so far advanced there IS no cure unless there may be had other sources or applications than being administered in the present. We are only delaying.

10. (Q) Any other advice? (A) Each that administers, each of those that are dependent, each of the loved ones materially should know, should feel, the Divine doeth all things well. Remember that thy Pattern through suffering became the Savior. Through suffering, individuals meet themselves, and fit themselves for the Divine expression in their soul selves. The bodies that cause disturbance by the disobeying of the laws and activities in a material world are but troublesome things to the soul at times. LIFE IS CONTINUOUS! THE SOUL MOVES ON, gaining by each experience that necessary for its comprehending of its kinship and relationship to Divine.

R1. 1/13/37 Sister-in-law [313]‘s letter: “My brother just can’t take it all in and he is afraid of making the doctors mad, and then he would not know what to do, if they were to give up the case. I still have not given up the idea of going to the doctors on my own, regardless of what Brother says. I don’t believe he would want to stop me after I get up there. I don’t see how the doctors could get mad with anyone except me personally, and it certainly would not hurt for them to get mad with me. They never did operate on [1004] and now they think it is too late. The X-ray doctor even said he did not think it was any use to give more X-rays, as they had not cured her as he had expected them to. He also gave her the 2 radium treatments. He is Dr. Meadows who is known as a cancer specialist in B’ham. Dr. Lester, the surgeon, has quite a big name and does all the surgery for the Gloss-Sheffield Steel & Iron Co. besides outside surgery. He takes all his patients to St. Vincent’s Hospital.”

R2. 1/23/37 Sister-in-law [313]‘s letter: “I had a letter from my brother asking me to drop the idea of consulting with [1004]‘s doctors, so guess I will let it drop and just hope for the best. Her doctors are very optimistic of her condition at present. I have done all I could so will just have to let well enough alone.”

R3. 2/14/37 Sister-in-law [313]‘s letter: “I am sorry we cannot do any more for [1004].”

R4. 5/17/37 Sister-in-law [313]‘s letter: “Last week I returned from a trip to Alabama. I spent 3 weeks… [1004] was in a bad condition, had to stay in bed most of the time and suffered terribly. The burnt flesh from the radium last July is still sluffing off. She takes either Aspirin or Anacin every 3 hrs. and it does not kill the pain entirely and upsets her stomach quite often. Sunday, a week ago, she went to the doctor and he painted the affected part with Mercurochrome and loosened a piece of flesh which dropped off later in the day causing a hemorrhage. She was rushed to the hospital and packed. On Tuesday she almost died and was given a transfusion and has had one each day since. She almost died again on Thursday and her fever went to 104. It seems that the hemorrhage has been checked now and she is showing a slight gain of strength. I don’t know what will be the outcome.”

R5. 8/20/37 Sister-in-law [313]‘s letter: “I know you have been very much interested in [1004]‘s condition. She died July 15th, after being in St. Vincent’s Hospital for 9 wks. and 3 days. During that time the cancer spread from the uterus to the bladder. It seems that it took the latter condition to kill her.

“The predictions of her Physical Reading were certainly carried out to perfection, especially in connection with the hemorrhages. The first one Nov. 1st was hard to stop and she was in the hospital only 8 days, but the second one on May 8th was very severe and lasted a week, during which time she was given 6 blood transfusions and numbers of glucose ones before it was checked entirely. Another came on July 1st when Brother wired for me, as they did not think she could last but a few hours, as she refused to have any more transfusions. Then another the day before she died.

“The doctors marveled at her wonderful constitution and strong heart action towards the last, said if she had not had the cancer she would have lived to be a very old woman. They never admitted that they had made the mistake of her life by not operating when they had the chance to save her. I did not have the heart to reproach my brother for his unbelief in the reading, but he mentioned to me that an operation might have saved her.

“During one of her spells of delirium she raved for 2 days about you and me wanting to change her methods of treatments. I was there but [they?] did not let her see me during that time. No explanation was offered the doctors and nurses who heard her. She only had 3 spells of delirium, each about a week apart towards the last. The rest of the time she knew everything and was conscious until the last 6 hrs. before death.

“She was not allowed to suffer any during the time she was at the hospital, as they changed opiates on her whenever they began to lose effect. Her great suffering was while at home when she refused to use anything stronger than Aspirin and Anacin which only dulled the pain enough for her to stand it.

“During the last 15 days some member of her family was with her constantly day and night, as no one knew when the end would come. It happened to be my turn when she died, as I had relieved Brother at 1:00 A.M. and she died at 4:25 A.M. I phoned for him and he got back just as she breathed her last. We were so afraid she would be conscious at the end.”
