This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 30th day of December, 1935, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [1089], Jr., Sponsored by his cousin, Edgar Cayce, through the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

1. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [1089].

2. Now, as we find, while there are physical disturbances apparent in the functioning of the body-mental, if these conditions are considered from their proper relationships - as to the relative activities through the mental and physical forces - not only may there be made the more perfect functioning through the physical forces of the body, but there may be made a great development mentally and spiritually for the body.

3. There are those periods when there is the sound of voices; there are the periods of lapses of memory; there are the periods when the body becomes dizzy - or as without its own self. These are but SPIRITUAL expressions, if properly considered, properly correlated, properly coordinated with the physical functionings of the body.

4. The body, [1089] (now called), is in the position of being made a CHANNEL of expression or manifestation of spiritual activities. This is evidenced by the conditions, if they are considered properly.

5. In the physical functioning these conditions exist:

As we find, there are those tendencies for there to be a lack of the proper balance between the blood supplies in the physical forces; owing to the ANXIETY that has been brought about in the physical functioning of the body. And this at times is the reason given as to how the mental aberrations or mental visions are experienced by the body.

7. But if there will be a harkening to such experiences, much good - and much understanding - may come. Not that the body is to be turned over, as it were, to every influence that may express or manifest through an attunement in which the physical forces are in the present.

8. But if there is set a definite period or manner of meditation, as may be given in a very close study of that which has been manifested or expressed through these sources and compiled in the paper on Meditation, there may be had a balancing. And in the experiences of the entity there may come an activity that will enable the body-physical (as would be expressed from the material side alone) to “snap out” of these expressions, those depressions, those feelings of floating, those feelings of losing control, those feelings of the inability of concentration.

9. For, guided by those that are the Creative Forces in manifestation in a physical body, there may come not only for self but for humanity, for individuals, for groups, that which may be the GREAT manifestation. And indeed may it be said that through the concentration, through the consecration of self, that as given of old may be fulfilled; “The glory of the Lord will be manifest among men, for I, thy God, hath spoken it.”

10. Then - in preparation of self - fear not. Let thy mind, thy body, be consecrated, set aside, DETERMINED that “As the Lord wills, so may it be done,” and that the Lord will have His way with thee; that the words of thy mouth, the meditations of the heart, may be acceptable in His sight; taking only Him as thy guide who hath given, “If ye will abide in me, I will abide in thee.”

11. And He will give His angels charge concerning thee, and they will bear thee up - lest thou stumble and fall into materiality.

12. “Fear not, I am with thee.” This should be upon the mind, the heart; that there may be the renewing of the life-flow in the BLOOD of the body, that the organs thereof may be attuned to the SPIRITUALITY (not ism) - that may bring the same to thy every activity, in all of thy relations and all of thy dealings with those problems of every nature in thy associations and thy dealings with thy fellow man.

13. For these be the problems that each soul must meet in its choice of that as will be thought concerning the application of that it receives through its meditations.

14. Lean upon that thou hast learned in thine understandings, in thine knowledge of the dealings of the Father through the Son to the children of men! For His promises are sure. His dealings with thy fellow man are as expressions of thy concept of thy Redeemer in thy daily life.

15. As to the physical attributes, then, and the manner in which these are to be approached in the present - and in thy daily studies:

16. Each day PURIFY thy body, thy mind, as ye enter into that period of communication in prayer, in supplication. And He will give thee understanding; He will give thee WISDOM as to how ye shall conduct thyself - day by day!

17. Not in the taking, then, of medicants. Not in activities that are other than those of keeping the body-physical fit.

18. But in thy mental meditation, seek the Lord while He may be found. Put Him not away from thee, but seek ONLY in the NAME of the CHRIST, the LORD, the SON OF MAN! the SAVIOR OF THE WORLD!

19. And ye shall KNOW the way, and the Way shall be in Him - and much good will come to thee through those very experiences that have made thee afraid.

21. (Q) Is there anything that others can do, in the way of suggestions or help - as the Association? (A) Only that as may be, that others may join at those periods when the body - mentally, physically - consecrates itself in prayer, in meditation.

For EACH soul must find its OWN position, its OWN association. And when found, it gives the body HEALTH, STRENGTH, VITALITY, and those necessary influences for meeting material problems day by day.

R1. 1/1/36 EC’s letter to [1089]:

”…I hope you will get the proper interpretation and understanding of the information given, and that you will not throw it aside lightly - because so very little is suggested to be done for the physical condition in the immediate. For, if the reading is correct in its analysis, the condition is rather a mental and spiritual knocking at your door.

“I only wish that it were possible for you to be with us for a little while. Unless there are some real changes soon, I’m sure it would be advisable for you to arrange to spend a week or ten days here. For it isn’t a real physical or mental condition; it is a psychopathic one - but it is evidently the psychic attempting to come through. If the information in the reading is correct, you are destined to be a very valuable individual for a great many people - as well as a representative of God; that is, a channel through which divine information may come to others.

“Don’t think of this lightly now, [1089]. I know what it means. Possibly I know better than anyone else, from my own personal experience.

“No wonder your professors and associates have not been able to analyze the condition or to do anything about it - if the reading is correct; and you know by studying the information whether or not it is true, better than anyone else could possibly tell.

“Of course, if there is anything you don’t understand, don’t fail to say so; for if we can do anything to get a further explanation into ways and manners, we are only too glad to try. But the greatest thing is to be found in your own self and your own meditation, your own understanding of just what’s trying to manifest through you. And I’m sure, with your training, with your association, you will have nothing less than the highest which is the Master, of course, Himself…”

R2. 1/5/36 [1089]‘s letter to EC:

”…I was so surprised to get the reading and was so delighted to receive your encouraging letter.

“Concerning my reaction to the reading: I am more or less in a state of indecision as to how to interpret it but all that I can understand about the conditions is that they are exactly as they exist. I do indeed realize that I should not take it lightly and I DO NOT. I feel as though I would be much more satisfied if it were all clearer to me. I also think that, I, after being with you, would be perfectly satisfied with whatever you would suggest through psychic readings.

“If I could talk to you, I could explain all that has occurred during my past life.

“I was bothered (mentally) before I went to school and went for the purpose of getting away from my thoughts - which I found impossible. I became so disturbed that I went to a psychologist and told him how I was affected.

“I am a homosexual and had a good idea that I was before he told me I was. He said that due to my condition (sex) that conflicts upon conflicts had arisen and that that was the existing situation.

“He tried about 12 times to hypnotize me and he never did and I don’t know the reason because as far as I knew I was perfectly willing to it.

“As far as I can explain for a reason for my condition, I think masturbation has played a role in it. Of course I realize that environment and other things have also helped to bring about my state of mind.

“But still I am determined to carry out and believe anything that you say or suggest if it is different from what the psychologist because he never helped me and I have my doubts as to his knowledge of me.

“You see, I feel that if I were with you for a while, that you could straighten me out and I would feel that whatever we find out would be the exact thing to accept without doubt and the thing to carry out.

“If you still think that I should spend a short time with you, I’ll exert every effort to make it possible for me to make the trip.

“I’ve decided that I won’t go back to school until everything is cleared up because I would be wasting my time and still be a failure.

“I am unable to express my gratitude to you for your TRUE interest in me and for the reading and letter. PLEASE let me hear from you as soon as you find it possible to write…”

R3. 1/9/36 EC’s letter to [1089]:

”…Thanks for yours of the 5th, and for your writing me as you did. Think I can appreciate your feelings in the matter better than most. I, of course, [1089], am not a psychologist, from the study standpoint at least, but I believe if one will read the Good Book they will become one without doubt. Yes, if it is possible, will be fine for you to come, have a good long talk with me, believe can help you understand. Of course the real work, [1089], you will have to do yourself. Study the paper very closely on Meditation and apply it in your own way and manner, and you will get a real awakening and one that will help.

“Sex, of course, is a great factor in everyone’s life; it is the line between the great and the vagabond, the good and the bad; it is the expression of reactive forces in our very nature; allowed to run wild, to self-indulgence, becomes physical and mental derangement; turned into the real influence it should be in one’s life, connects man closer with his God, and that is the use you should put it to. That the expression of same becomes PSYCHIC in its nature is true, and the visions the body experiences is that the mind holds as its ideal, its goal to attain. The call has always been to every man and woman, ‘If ye will be my people, I will be your God.’ We, as individuals, have to accept that challenge. We say we believe it, then the only thing to do is to act like it. We are all ‘Gods in the making’ for we seek to be one with Him even as the Son, Jesus Christ, who has said and promised, ‘that ye do and ask in my name, that will ye do, for as I abide in the Father and ye in me, so may the Father be glorified in the earth.’ If we let our minds run to baser things, then we lose sight of His Power working in us, for man alone can and does defy God. His love is ours if we will use it, but in relying on self or depending alone on man-made things we lose sight of His promises, and thus lose our way in the maze of conflicting emotions that arise through the experiences that confront us. But if we hold fast to His love we grow in grace and knowledge and understanding, for the Godly life is a growth; not a cloak put on and taken off, but a growth.

“That your experience has brought you manifestations that have at times, or often, expressed themselves in sex is not to be wondered at, when we realize that that is the expression of creative life in the earth. But if we lose sight that it is an expression of God and accredit it to something else, we deny the very promises He has made us all.

“Study over the reading, [1089], read with it the 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th chapters of St. John; then read Romans 12, and you will catch a vision of what has been promised and how it may be fulfilled in your own experience.

“That you have been shown in vision, in many mysterious ways, is still proof of what has been said by the Psalmist, ‘He will give His angels charge concerning thee, lest at any time you dash your foot against a stone.’ But if we continue to deny the faith, well, He departs or rather we accept some other way.

“You possibly have heard from [1005] before this, who is planning to come here in the next few weeks, last of the month or something like that. You can see him if you decide to come and come together; will be much cheaper for you, and you know will be glad to see you and to do anything in the world I can to help you get yourself straight.

“Hold fast to yourself in Christ Jesus. That is your hope and your promise, that in HIS NAME you can do even great things, even as He…”

R4. 1/13/36 HLC’s letter to [261]:

”…Now, relative to another matter which I believe will be of special interest to you. A request came in a couple of weeks ago for a Physical Reading for a young man who is attending the University of … His name as you will see is [1089]. For some time, I do not know just how long, he has been troubled with peculiar experiences and has sought the assistance of his professor in psychology to explain these. He has grown worse under the treatments given him. His condition includes periods of depression and emotional instability, sensations as of drifting off into space, hearing voices, etc. His reading indicated unusual psychic ability. In fact I do not remember of hearing a reading which suggested the possibility of such remarkable psychic development. The matter is of special interest to me due to the fact that years ago when we asked how my father’s work could be carried on the reading stated [GD’s note: 7/28/29 See 137-123, Par. 17-A, 20-A.] that we would contact a young man with whom [341] had been closely associated in a past incarnation, who would develop into a very wonderful psychic. This boy [1089] is just the proper age as given in the reading and I had a strange sensation while listening to his reading.

“Would you care to sponsor his reading on your research membership and follow the development of his case? You are credited with four possible readings. I will be glad to send you a copy of his reading and advise him of your sponsorship. His family is in very moderate circumstances and he is trying to work his way through school. The case should prove very interesting and I will be glad to keep you in touch with its developments…”

“This is a PLEA for help. I am about desperate and need your help more than anyone’s on earth.

“I have a mental disorder and have been under the treatment of a psychologist at the University of … where I am going to school. So far I have gotten nowhere under his treatment and really am just about at the depths of discouragement.

“I hope that you will favor me by giving me a mental and physical reading as soon as you can. I honestly feel down in my heart that if you can’t help me, no person on earth can.

“I am at home now for the holidays and will be here until the fourth or fifth of January.

“Neither father or mother know of my condition and I really prefer that they not know of it.

“Please let me hear from you immediately because I AM anxious and NEED your help…”
