1. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [1122] this we have had before. At times there is apparently a great deal of change for the betterment of the conditions. Again we find the body lapses back to where the strength, the vitality, seems to have been reduced, or have been used up for the time being. The bettered conditions, as we would find, would come through the application of those suggestions as have been made for the BETTERMENT of the conditions in this body. Ready for questions.

2. (Q) Has body improved since treatment from Dr. Taylor? [5/18/30 When Dr. Chas. Francis Taylor visited Cayce Hospital?] (A) To some extent, yes. Better in speech, SOME better in use of body at times; at others, becomes easily distraught - very nervous, from thought or contact of influences. We are through with this reading.

Dear [1122]:-

Dr. Lydic has turned your request for a set of your readings over to me, asking that I send them to you. I had to make a copy of the first one.

We are all very interested to know your progress since going to New York to receive treatments under Dr. Taylor. Would you be so kind as to advise us as to the number of treatments which you have had, and as to the extent of benefit you have derived from same? It is the policy of the Hospital to follow up each case, and if you will help us this much, it will be greatly appreciated.

R5. 7/31/30 Morton H. Blumenthal’s letter to Mr. Taylor:

Mr. Charles Taylor Monticello, N.Y.

Dear Mr. Taylor,

Permit me to thank you very kindly for your communication of July 18th.

In respect to our relationship, one to another, I have spent a good many years in the fields of study of life or consciousness as respect to mind and knowledge that may be obtained from the Universal forces through the use of the various stages of consciousness to which the mind is heir, even the mind in human form. It is this phase that interests me, and if there is application, in terms of chemistry, anatomy, and the various sciences to be made, of information so obtained, and such information is verifiable in terms of scientific experiments, then I am vitally interested, and to this end have founded the Cayce Hospital at Virginia Beach, Va. Furthermore to this end and in cooperation with my fellow-workers, I have founded the Atlantic University.

The tedious route of scientific experiment interests me only in terms of applications of knowledge obtained as above described but confine myself to the acquisition of knowledge through the route of physical and external experiments alone, is a limitations I refuse to impose upon myself. I am afraid unless you are willing to enlarge the scope of your scientific experiments into the field of consciousness in all its aspects, and to the application that may be made knowledge from every and any dimension of mind, as well as to include the application that may be made to the human body and human health by suggestions made direct to the sub-conscious, rather than confining oneself to the long and devious route of pure anatomical and physical experiments alone, that your program is too limited to fit in with ours. We believe that a word of command to the sub-conscious self imposed by the individual himself, or by an outside stronger mind, may do more good or more harm in one minute than may medicine do in one year, both as respecting building up or tearing down the physical and mental body, or as respecting evolution or degeneration of the mind or soul.

That, in brief, is the analysis of our program, the hypothesis on which we are working and the school of philosophy, along the lines of which, our Association and our group is proceeding.

Regarding [1122], the information given in the reading, or coming through from the Universal forces, access to which we have obtained through the mind of Edgar Cayce, gives information [1122-1, Par. 11-A] that you have the ability to so apply the forces as are made manifest though and by you, to influence and command the weaker mind of [1122] as to establish normalcy in the control that her mind may exercise over her physical body and her own mental forces. As our doctors and those in our Hospital have not the development that you possess to so exercise these forces, our Hospital has not in its personnel that which will do [1122] any good. There is, therefore, no use our receiving her back into the Hospital, but, following the suggestions of the reading itself, which is the information that governs the application we make in our Hospital or out of it as respecting our research work, we are glad to provide the where-with-all for [1122]‘s remaining in your charge, provided of course, this does not take unlimited time. Our Hospital has not the means to carry out the information contained in the reading to effect a cure with regard to [1122], and she is therefore not a patient for our Hospital, but rather a patient for one that can and will carry out the information contained in the reading. You are able and capable of doing this and if you will do this, I am sure the results will be exactly as promised in the reading, namely normalcy returned to the mind and body of [1122].

Let me assure you of our every cooperation, and trust your will one with His, as we seek to make our will one with His, in effecting the good we seek to do, will bring about our mutually desired results with respect to the patient.

Mr. Edgar Cayce, Cayce Hospital Virginia Beach, Va.

Dear Edgar:

Enclosed please find copy of letter I have sent to Charles Taylor at his camp in Monticello, N.Y., with respect to one of our former patients, [1122]. For reasons explained in the letter to him, I do not think we should receive this patient back into our Hospital. At least, I believe that before the patient is received back, if you and Dr. Lydic do not agree with me, that the Hospital Committee should be called. However, if you and Dr. Lydic agree, then there is no need to go further. Since we have not had a hypnotist in our Hospital, we simply have not the means to effect the cure that the reading advises for [1122]. Therefore, until we have such a one connected with our Hospital, such a case as [1122]‘s is not for our Hospital. Do you not think this is plain common sense? I think [1122]‘s mother should be so advised. What is your opinion of the matter?

We have written Dr. Lydic for his suggestions for cutting down the over-head of the hospital. Market conditions are again bad and things are now really worse than ever, and Lydic will have to make more drastic cuts if the Hospital is to continue. I have written him to make his recommendations to Edwin, but something must be done there or action will have to be taken at the August meeting of the Board of Governors even if it is necessary to have Lydic there with us. You understand this, I believe, as the market has disappointed us again and now instead of being better, has struck again. However, I still have hopes that by the end of August, conditions will be improved but for the time being, every effort will have to be made to help us bear the burden in about the worst times we have experienced since the inauguration of the work. Edwin and I both appreciate the way you are trying hard to cooperate with us, as from past experiences we know you understand, and Lydic will have to see that for a few weeks, at least, he will have to run at a very big disadvantage, suffering with the rest of us until the storm is over. His idea of having those in the nurses home eat in the Hospital is a good one, as in these days, even 5 1/2 saved is a help, which you well know. Even in our business, we are now considering letting out more help, particularly in the customers department, to keep the ship afloat. I am sure everything will be all right if just everybody will lend a hand now when we need it more than ever before in our lives. It isn’t that we are afraid, but only that we are sure that if every department of the work, Hospital, or University or what not, will exercise a little patience and a little willingness to sacrifice, as in the days of old, or the early days of our work, we will weather the storm without disaster. Edwin and I will do everything in our power to give up to a very last nickel, but at this moment, it is not easy for either of us, any more than it is for any in Virginia Beach and I think if only some members of the Board and of our Hospital and even the employees therein, appreciated this, they would get a little of the inspiration, and be willing themselves, to give to the utmost of their selves for the cause for which you and I and Edwin have ever been willing and are willing to give so much.

With respect to my trip to Virginia Beach over last week-end, the truth was that my ticket was bought and my suit-case checked at the Pennsylvania terminal. I went out to dinner with Edwin and Tim [Thomas B. Brown] Friday night when I took sick at the dinner table. It was a bad Friday night for me I can tell you, and that which kept me alive is what I will write you about personally. The attack was renewed again on Sunday night and again, only the Master Himself kept me in the physical, but that brought the climax and while they are constantly on guard, I know I am on the improve.

I hope to be in Virginia Beach the week-end of the 9th, but am going to take things rather easy. However, when the August meeting of the board comes around, I hope to have my health in such shape that you and I can sit down and see if we can review not only the past but go over together some plans for the future and reestablish ourselves upon the platform for which we came into the world, and for which I know I have been retained in it. You have a very strong mind and so have I. Together we may move mountains and reach the throne. Separated, or permitting a gap to divide us, or with rangling, or letting pure human desire tear us apart, we form a divided house which can not stand and which of course then becomes worthless to Him, to Whom we have dedicated our lives. We both want to end our lives with a feeling that we have served and served well, and actually not only try to accomplish something, but look back and know we have succeeded in accomplishing something in His cause, and feel that He will be proud of us when He receives us back to the Universal. That, at least, is the way I feel and I know you did feel that way with me in the beginning, and I do not believe in your inner mind and heart you have really changed. This being the case, I see no reason why the old relationship between us my not be reestablished.

Tim, Edwin and I seek Him and I am sure you do also. Why, therefore, should flattering words of the material world, turn us from our coveted goal?

R7. 8/5/30 EC’s letter to Morton Blumenthal:

Mr. Morton H. Blumenthal, Blumenthal Brothers, 71 Broadway New York City

Dear Morton:-

I have yours of the 31st, enclosing copy of letter addressed to Mr. Charles Taylor at Monticello, New York. I am heartily in accord with everything you say as respecting this particular condition. I have so stated same many times to [1122]‘s mother. Knowing the circumstances that have surrounded, and do surround this particular family, it has made it a very hard thing to not act in a manner which is not in keeping with the work of the institution; though it may be misjudged by some, no matter WHAT is the decision of the Board as respecting this. However, I cannot see how anyone - knowing the actual truth as respecting what has been attempted for this body, and what is being cared for by the generosity of you and Edwin at this time - could say other than that you had tried to do everything possible. Dr. Lydic and I spoke of this sometime ago. He is very much adverse to even considering her coming back to the institution. At some times I doubt as to whether he has made proper considerations, in many cases along this line, but in this particular case I heartily agree with him, and I think everything has been done, and is being done, that could possibly be asked by all parties concerned.

I hardly know how to broach the subject respecting the suggestions to Dr. Lydic. If we could all sit down and talk to him - and possibly that’s due him, Morton. If we could get him to see something of the vision of the undertaking - He is a WONDERFUL man at heart. He has had to crash through with his own personality, until he is one of those that are led to believe in might and main. He hasn’t, or doesn’t SEEM to be aware of the SPIRITUAL side of life at all. As we suggested in New York at our last meeting, I broke the news to those that were in my particular line, and Tim was to talk to Dr. Lydic. So I didn’t mention anything to Dr. Lydic, though he mentioned it to me - as having heard it from some other sources. Too often, I am sure conditions are spoken of by others, and tales are carried back and forth that make for misunderstandings, that might be avoided. It seems to me, if things were done directly, and through their proper channels, rather than going in a roundabout way and having a distorted idea from what others say, it would be much better. He has seemed to feel that more drastic means were necessary, but that’s doing the same thing I’ve just been saying. He said he was going to talk with you, and that he didn’t want to talk with me about this. What his conversation with Tim was, I do not know, as neither of them mentioned to me what was said. It seems to me, however, that the hospital should be in the position to almost pay all overhead, if it’s looked after properly.

I’m sorry that things have been so unsatisfactory as respecting the market, and most of all I’m sorry to know of the physical suffering which you have had to endure. Please know, that if there is ever any way that I can possibly TRY to be of help, don’t hesitate to call on me at any time. I may be physically weak, and mentally awry - but, if I KNOW myself at ALL, my heart’s desire IS to be used in the service of the Master. I realize I can do nothing within myself. I realize that we can, none of us, do anything worth while without the cooperation of those that have the same purpose in view. While we may be all different minded, as to how it should be accomplished, we still may each - in our own way - work towards the furtherance of His way in these experiences.

I am sure you were very wise in not undertaking to come last week. Many of the people were very much disappointed, but I’m sure it’s well that you take care first of your physical, that the mental and spiritual may have the better channel to manifest through. KNOW, Morton, that I certainly WANT to stay ALWAYS in the same attitude, in the same mindedness, as I did the first time that I talked with you and Edwin as respecting the desire to be used in the service for others, without any desire for any unselfish motives for me or for any of mine. What it is that I have done, what it is that has been said that leads you to believe or think that I have erred, I’m sure there must be something I do not understand, and I assure you I am not conscious of such existing within my mind in any way, shape, form or fashion; for I want to be WHOLLY used by Him, for Him, in His service for mankind; for if it creates something else, there is something very, VERY, far wrong with the whole thing. I realize that I am set about by many temptations, here, there and everywhere. There are many different conceptions of what service is; many different conceptions of what should be the reward of those who are used in HIS way, and WHATEVER is the outcome from same I am sure He will provide. I look for nothing else, seek for nothing else, and I will certainly be more than anxious to talk with you, confer with you, and let’s see if we can’t gain more of that consciousness that will enable us to endure the trials, the temptations, the things that so easily beset us from all sides, and go forward; He being our captain, He being our guide, our shield, our armor, and I’m sure the results will be as HE would have them; for He is the Giver of all good and perfect gifts. He has said, “What ye shall ask in my name, believing, - “and, as He said to Peter of old, “If you love me, KEEP my commandments, FEED my sheep, GUIDE my children.”

R8. 8/22/30 Chas. F. Taylor’s letter to Morton Blumenthal:

Dear Mr. Blumenthal:

The camp is about to close next week, the others leaving Tuesday and [1122] Thursday, according to present plans. [1122] will go to Norfolk by train, arriving Friday afternoon.

Your check was received, thank you. My report will have to wait until I have a typewriter and more time.

My general opinion is that [1122] is curable but that it will take time and money and expert nursing aside from any special treatment from me. It would cost $1,000. to do what I am sure is necessary. Either her mother or an exceptional nurse would have to care for her constantly. By Thanksgiving she should be near normal. She is still physically in bad shape, tho much better. Her general physical appearance is very deceiving and only shows the struggle of nature to save her.

Unless some plan is put into immediate operation, [1122] will be a hopeless institutional case in a few months.

I have had no real chance at her here because of the amount of service such cases require, the lack of finances, and the lack of equipment. I understand her case as thoroughly as any one is likely to, but both the physical and mental factors are most baffling.

Your letter was a very remarkable one and will be carefully answered when I feel able to do it justice.

Dear Edgar,

Enclosed is self-explanatory, and indicates more money wasted by my being duped by Taylor to believe that he could cure this case in a short time. Possibly she could have been cured had he used the hypnotic influence he knows how to use. But so far as I see, unless the reading deems otherwise, we have reached the end of our rope. If a reading could be taken on the girl and the definite name and address of a reliable hypnotist given other than Taylor, and said man communicated with, then if conditions are the same as when the first reading was taken, it would seem to me worth while to proceed along those lines and I would glad to help and will help if such a reading is taken and if such indicated, and if the name of the hypnotist is given and said hypnotist communicated with and arrangements made for him to come to Virginia Beach to treat the girl. If this is not done, it seems to me useless to take her back under our care, but if this is done, it seems to me she, like every soul, is certainly worth helping.

Dear Morton:-

I have yours of the 23rd, enclosing the letter from Mr. Taylor. I don’t know, Morton, that you could truthfully say you had been DUPED by Taylor. He is again, possibly, a creature of circumstance. I am sure, from past experiences, the man has the abilities - but his application is possibly not in keeping with that which seems would have been better, had it been applied in another direction. I think you are exactly right about her returning to the institution. Unless we could find someone who would be willing to carry out the suggestions in toto as would be given in the readings, as respecting using hypnosis, I do not see how we can possibly be of help. I discussed the matter with Dr. Lydic, and he is of the same opinion. We feel that the best thing to do is to take the matter up in a reading the first of the week, after she returns home, and I am writing her mother to that effect.

Dear Mrs. […]

We just learned yesterday that [1122] had returned home from New York, where she has been taking treatments. We certainly hope she has improved by leaps and bounds under Dr. Taylor’s supervision, and that she is now well on the road to complete recovery.

For the purpose of completing our records, Mrs. […] will you please send us a report of [1122]‘s condition since she left the Hospital? It is our desire to keep in touch with every one who has sought assistance through these sources, in order that we may determine just what progress they are making. Of course, this refers to cases outside the Hospital, and the only way we have of checking up on these is for each individual to advise us of his particular case. We shall appreciate your cooperation.

We should like very much to see you and [1122]. Can you come out some Sunday afternoon? We should be very glad indeed to have the privilege of being with you again.

R12. 10/3/30 Mother’s letter to GD:

… St. N.W. Washington, D.C.

My dear Miss Davis,

I regret this delay in replying to your request, but have been consuming time and energy the past five weeks in hunting employment here. It seemed the only thing to do if [1122] was to have a chance.

As to her condition, she is certainly better in spots but the general release from tension and constant discomfort has not come as we fully expected. She jumps rope in the mornings - turning it herself - and lets herself go in a truly wholesome way. She often holds her arm further down at her side than when she left Hospital, and stands firmly on the left foot sometimes instead of on the toe. She is improving steadily from the exhaustion of dread that she was suffering from on her arrival. She had hopes of coming back to me to help instead of having still to lean on me, and it put her in a deplorable condition. She is decidedly more hopeful now and in an illusive sort of way shows improvement.

But, my dear, what does my conscious mind diagnosis amount to, to record on the files of a Hospital based upon psychic research and investigation, and how can a work of that sort be content to leave a case dangling as this has been done since July 1st? [GD’s memo: Notice the mother’s attitude even though [1122] had a been a charity case in the Cayce Hospital for a period of over six months. Looking back, it seems to me that it was very poor judgement on someone’s part to admit her from the start, since the original reading given for her - 1122-1 - could not be followed in the hospital.] I ask for a reading before [1122] left there - asking the question “Is it the right thing for her to leave and go to Camp under Dr. Taylor’s care”. It wasn’t granted. She was shoved out from all hospital responsibility with as much dispatch as possible, altho it is a case which would rebound to the glory of the Hospital for all future time, if conquered.

We like Washington very much, have a plain but sunny, clean little room, and have been getting on fine in every way. If I can just get enough substitute work in the schools until exams. Come off in April, then it is very likely that I can get permanent work for next session, as I have influence backing me. It seemed the only thing to do to come on here, and so I believe, a living is going to be provided for the months ahead.

Earnestly hope the work is prospering at Cayce Hospital.
