This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 31st day of January, 1938, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [1158], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 3:55 to 4:30 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, N.Y. (Body and enquiring mind, who seeks information, advice and guidance as to her mental, material and spiritual development
- Ques.)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [1158]; this we have had before.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Do you think it is VERY DESIRABLE that I should study this winter with Dr. [1301]? (A) As has been indicated, this - as we find - WOULD be very good.
If considerations are given all phases of such study, as WE find, under such guidance would be well for the body.
Within the consciousness of self there may be those aversions to the manner of application of truth, tenets or ideals of the body. But as has been indicated, it is well for the body and body-consciousness of [1158] to consider all approaches, all phases and the application, and the CONSCIOUSNESSES of that attained by individuals in their application of tenets held to.
And as has been indicated for the body of [1158] this body as an entity may do and give as much as may be attained from the study with such an entity as [1301].
For as has been so oft indicated, it is in the giving of that in hand that one gains in the SPIRITUAL sense; and in the exchange of those tenets, those ideals, those ideas with one that has made, does make such an application of truths as Dr. [1301], there would be the stimulation to the body-mind of [1158].
Then, when considered from all phases - as to the time and the needs and desires - if this answers to something within, then well to consider seriously the counsel as given.
If there is rather the desire to drift, or to accept without the WHOLE consideration, then follow the desire of the self.
- (Q) Can I do this without being disloyal to my good friend Helena Martin? (A) Does the study of any phase of teaching necessitate that one forego friendship, or that of SINCERITY? Is it not rather that self may be the better channel for service to its own ideal?
Rather may it not then be as a HELPFULNESS to self, to the friend?
Do not engage in the study, with either, to find the faults; rather to find that which answers by its WORKABILITY, its APPLICABILITY in thine own experience!
For too much antagonism is the outcome of finding or seeking for the weakness in any.
For as the saw goes, there is so much good in the worst of us, and so much bad in the best of us, it does not behoove that ANY of us should find the fault one with another!
But rather let that mind be in thee which was in Jesus, in Christ Jesus; he that is whole needs not the physician.
He that is satisfied with that in hand, then, has ceased to grow, or ceased to be in the position where he may be helpful to those STRUGGLING along the way.
-
(Q) In a former Reading you have advised me not to seek spiritual help from other people, or through lectures or books, but to be still, and meditate more, and read special portions and books of the Bible. (A) This is correct.
-
(Q) Why, therefore, are you now advising me to study with Dr. [1301]? (A) The question is asked, “Would it be well?” The answer is, “Well.”
There are few, if any, who have attained that consciousness that they may not be the gainer by studying with any individuals who are SINCERE in their desire to give to others, through their experience, through their study of ALL metaphysical and spiritual subjects, that which will enable an individual to meet the problems of coordinating activities one with another.
Yet the real answer, the SOURCE of supply, IS - EVER - within self! Just as music, art or spirituality of any nature; the source is within the individual but the study, the practice, the application of such with others that are seeking makes for a union; and in union there is strength.
- (Q) If Dr. [1301] has a fine understanding of Spiritual Law, why does she smoke, and drink occasional cocktails? (A) Answer that even as the Master said, “What sought ye in John? who renounced his position as a high priest, separated himself, and lived only on locust and wild honey; garbed in the raiment of camels’ hair - and the girdle. Yet the Son of man comes eating, drinking with his fellow man and ye say, ‘Behold a glutton and a winebibber!’”
Ye are holding to the same stumblingblock - as His sister!
All good, all force is in DOING - in applying, in BEING! As another has put it, “I will be all things unto all men that I may thereby save the more.”
If such OFFENDS thee, have no part then with same. But DO NOT find FAULT that THAT is the answer to the INDIVIDUAL as to the MANNER in which the greater number may be given aid!
- (Q) In just what way will she be of special service to me? (A) NONE unless there is real service sought and service given!
STILL, it would be WELL - if the entity SEEKS to be such, and to FIND such, in the association!
-
(Q) Will she help me to more perfectly bring forth an abundant demonstration of material supply, substance, money, to fill our every need? (A) Just as given, not unless the entity feels she has something to give and something to gain.
-
(Q) How or what can I do to help my husband abundantly fill all of his indebtedness, cancel same, and demonstrate enough over to meet our every need with a surplus to bless the world? (A) O that all - and the self with same - would gain that consciousness, “USE THOU ME, O LORD, AS THOU SEEST THAT I - AS THY SERVANT - MAY SERVE YOU BETTER!”
And to be, then, in whatsoever position ye find thyself, not SATISFIED - but SPIRITUALLY, MENTALLY, CONTENT!
For without contentment no peace may be had. But if peace is found, if harmony is obtained in self, THEN may there be the greater outpouring of the blessings of the Father - Whether in material, mental or what not - upon thee and thy household!
How gave He of old? Seek first the kingdom of heaven, have it within, and all these things may be added unto thee in their respective places.
This ye know, this ye see; but to be busy at same is the greater problem of every individual - which comes back to that which has so oft been given: SOW in thy conversation, in thy daily activity, the SEED of the SPIRIT: and leave the RESULTS with the Father!
- (Q) Can the aforesaid be accomplished in 1938? (A) Whether it’s accomplished in ‘38 or ‘98 - It may be accomplished in the moment, if that consciousness is attained - and then held, and worked at!
For as He hath given (and His promises are sure), “If and when ye abide in me, whatsoever ye shall ask it shall be GIVEN thee - believing, BELIEVING that ye have same.”
-
(Q) How can I make the most progress in my singing this winter? (A) By the application of self in that direction, as has been indicated.
-
(Q) Will study with Dr. [1301] help me progress more rapidly in my singing? (A) This question would imply material gain irrespective of all other!
AGAIN, if there is to be given by self and something to be gained by self, and the consciousness that it exists in the experience of the teacher and in self AS the gift from the Creator, yes! Not WITHOUT that may it be gained!
- (Q) Please give me definite instructions how to constructively handle the - [1334] - Osteopath emotional reactions? (A) As each circumstance or condition arises in respect to same, let that purpose be in thee which is the basis of ALL human relationships for the better, the greater spiritual understanding, to wit:-
“As ye would that others should do to thee, do ye even so to them.”
The whole relationship of EVERY emotional or mental nature, then, responds to the Creative Forces that are in Him.
- We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. She referred Mrs. [1498] and Mr. [1486] for readings.
R2. 8/11/49 GD’s letter to [1158] on hearing of her husband, [1151]‘s death:
My dear, sweet Friend [1158]:-
The last few days you have been in my thoughts constantly, and even for months before I kept thinking and dreaming about you and [1151] and planning to write. Strange, sometimes, how the people I love the most seem to get the least attention from me.
Of all devoted wives I’m sure you have a keener sense of loss in physical separation from your beloved mate. Still, I know you are more capable than any other to arrive at the spiritual meaning and to carry on your part in the great, over-all plan. I seem to hear him saying, with Jesus:
“Be of good cheer… I go to prepare a place for you…”
Your souls, as the readings put it, are so “well knit together” that there is no real separation in all eternity. We are not able ever to think of you apart, whether in or out of the body.
God bless and keep you. Come to see us when you can.
Lovingly, [signed] Gladys
R3. 11/22/49 HLC’s ltr. to [1158]:
Dear [1158]:
Time and only time will soften the shock of the drastic physical changes that have become necessary in your life, but gradually your understanding and appreciation for the “larger plan” will come to the front of your thinking. Few individuals are prepared as well as you to meet the situation. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
In the wider road of experience which lies ahead of [1151], he will not be restricted in the development and use of the many spiritual qualities which he had developed. These are trying times and I am sure you realize what a great need there is for men of his calibre in the realm of thought. It is sometimes hard for us to understand and grasp the tremendous scope of universal law, but when we do catch even a tiny glimpse of the light ahead, living takes on more meaning. Suffering is a part of the unreal world in which we find ourselves. As you well know, only man has made it so.
Our greetings and love to you and all the family.
Sincerely, Hugh Lynn Cayce [HLC:o]

B1. 11/28/37 See 1158-14, especially Par. 12-A, and 1158-12, Par. 44-A on 11/19/37.
B2. 1/18/38 Letter: “Another thing that has given me a cause for thought is concerning advice given in my Mental and Spiritual Reading to the effect that I should study this winter with Dr. [1301]. That is, I asked if it would be a good idea for me to study with her, and the answer came back Yes. After meeting her, I discovered she smokes, and also drinks cocktails. This means nothing to me except I have accepted the idea that as we grow in spiritual understanding we find less and less need for turning to physical things for stimulation and help.
“For some years I have known a Miss Helena Martin who is a metaphysician. She is a very beautiful character and leads a very pure, high character of life. She is much more my ideal than Mrs. [1301] (though I admire Mrs. [1301]). She neither drinks, smokes, nor eats meat, yet never have I heard her condemn nor criticize anyone for doing any of these things. Both my husband and myself feel she is a splendid, constructive, powerful force for good on earth. We have often taken difficulties to her and received constructive help. Somehow, it gives me a feeling of being disloyal to a fine teacher to suddenly start studying with someone else
- I have not been able, in fact, to do it. True, I am not studying with Miss Martin, but I do follow and approve of her line of thinking, and do turn to her, now and again, when I feel the need of spiritual help. Therefore, I would like a Ck. Mental-Spiritual Reading with questions, asking something like the following”: [1/31/38 See 1158-15.]
B3. 3/12/38 Mrs. [1158] obtained another Ck. Physical - See 1158-16, and later subsequent Ck. Physicals.
