R1. 8/21/40 [1180]‘s letter to EC:

My dear Mr. Cayce:

Know you are anxiously awaiting a report from the oil field of the West. I will give you a few lines this morning. Since last hearing from, we set nearly 4,000 feet of pipe in the Grober Well and cemented it. The lady referred to from California was here, brought one of the most complete and to my opinion, up-to-date geophysical oil locating device and with it some very able and outstanding men, who spent nearly two weeks on my property. This equipment consisted of three different types of instruments, one which is the great machine, which I have the most faith, manufactured by the great scientist, Dr. Samuel Spitz, who was the so-called doodlebugger, for Tom Slick. The equipment in all was estimated at or claimed to be approximately $20,000.00 worth of equipment in one station wagon.

While here I made what I feel is a good deal for two more tests. The location of it I marked on the back of this letter [See Source File Key #1180 for description of location re 1180-9]. I am also enclosing a photograph [which was enclosed] of one of these locations, should it be of any value to you and we expect to get started on this location very shortly, but so far I am not carrying out your advice in one respect, that is it is very much desired by everyone concerned that I personally either contract or supervise this first drilling for the reason, this is very treacherous drilling for one who does not understand it. Many tests in this country have been lost through inability to handle formations. It is estimated that I have done more of this wild cat drilling than any other man here and completed my jobs 100 per cent; so my taking personal charge of these first tests not only makes it easier to get the finance, but makes all of us feel more secure, so from the looks of things at present, I perhaps will drill these first two tests. It is not my desire or intentions (since the information from you on June 6th) to continue in this business. However, if there is not too much against same, I would like to turn my equipment into a drilling company and turn it over to my employees, who are boys who have been with me; some for many years, and I will carry stock enough, that I can have a voice in its operations whenever I feel it necessary, but also to keep myself free from liabilities in same, and would like your opinion on this.

R2. 9/4/40 EC’s letter to Mr. [1180]:

Dear [1180]:

Thanks for yours of the 21st - have been quite anxious to hear how things were going with you. Am happy to know that you have something started and am sure very soon now you will have to take stock of your self and see just which way you will go. And am happy for you and am sure that you will choose the right way always. The “doodle bug” must have show there was real production for the lady. Just hope every thing will work out, and am sure it will - as for you tending the drilling of the other locations - well - that should be alright and am sure many will be better pleased to have you personally on the job.

Thanks for the snaps - they are good - and one can well imagine any thing is under the ground.

Your plan for turning the equipment over to your men who have worked with you, that is marvelous and am sure is in the right direction - am sure you are pleased with the outlook, and you deserve all the good that comes to you to say nothing of the faithfulness of the good lady.

We are so so here - had a fine Congress in June - we have at last begun to try and have an office for the work - while it is joined on to the house here - are making a fire proof vault for the records and enough office space to carry on while haven’t the money to complete it - am doing it by Faith, and trusting HE will provide some way the wherewith to carry on.

All are pretty well here - have had big weekend lots of folks here and some 20 of our members spent the weekend here.

R3. 2/12/41 [1180]‘s letter to EC & family:

Albuquerque, New Mexico

Our dear Mr. Cayce, and family:-

Yours of January 21st was received, and you just can’t imagine how glad we always are to hear from you good folks.

I have rechecked and read all your correspondence many times, again just yesterday, from it I take you are having difficulties the same as us. I wish I could help you, we have always wanted to be of some help to you, and your work, but instead have not as much as kept up our end, frankly speaking, that is the principle reason we have not corresponded more than we have, as seems all we have on our minds is our work and holdings, so in writing are sure to be asking favors, only hoping some day to be able to repay.

We sure feel for you, with both boys in line for the army, and you have our sympathy. But you have a lot to be thankful for, as both are bright young men such as the army needs for more important jobs than carrying a gun, therefore, they can do a little choosing as to branch of service, and be better protected than the folks at home in case we really are in war. I suggest using a little mental work on the theory that they get one of them million Government jobs there are close at home. One thing to be thankful for it is not through yours and my thoughts for power and greed that has caused this war, so why can’t we with a clear conscious get all we can out of it as long as billions are being put out anyway.

You asked how we are physically, we are pretty good, as for our business it is about the same. This Grober well is still shut down. This California woman has done nothing, her option ran out January 1st, but she seemed to be trying, as part she is interested in is Government leases and the Administration is meddling, so in everything Capital is afraid. Her main backers are presumably now waiting outcome of the present bill before the house to control the oil business and hope it to be settled soon, so we extended her time until May 1st, so she has five thousand acres tied on my shallow structure, and Grober continues to stall on finishing his well, pipe is set at 4000 feet and cemented in a lime that was showing considerable oil and gas, so all I can do is sit and wait hoping nothing is wrong.

We often talk to ourselves and wonder and ask why, and what have we ever done that we cannot advance. When first coming to this country we were prosperous, but saved it all and took up what we classed good properties, then the crash, but we were protected that we still have all our holdings but no money to put them no production, the big fellow is only interested in grabbing and the little fellow doesn’t have enough to help. Now that money is loosening up to some extent, I am wondering if I should try to get some backing and form a little company for only shallow drilling aside from my main property. I have in sight a world of good property and structures, that good major sands can be reached with a machine at less than fifteen hundred feet, but I dare not submit any of this without knowing I can go on through, as I am watched constantly, as is generally known. I know this country and have lots of stuff spotted that is not taken up, so once I do get another start I should be going places both here, and over in West Texas but all shallow stuff. In your work if you find someone who wishes to step out now and clean up in the next year or so tell them about me and take a reading on it, if they can raise any cash, only five to ten thousand to start on (more of course would be better) I can put new property in it that I only have some time invested, in so doing we can all be on some sort of equal basis, you for your services so you can get your part and I see no reason why your financial problems cannot be soon cared for.

Instead of putting a lot of money in one as before (Grober claims sixty five thousand in this one test) I propose not to drill anything that will cost over five thousand for a test, and in many cases should be less, after having our own equipment, and no test should take over thirty days to drill. We need not put much in equipment on start as I have some that can be used however, most of mine is too heavy for this sort of work. Open up some of these shallow fields and sell out giving us cash to really go places with. I have always had a longing to open up the San Saba pool. Since coming here I have won a name in knowing my stuff in drilling that which the other fellow calls impossible. Not knowing how or what your connections are, I am giving the above in case you should have some connections looking for just such an opportunity, if so, I feel I have it, as we undoubtedly are getting a field besides all the other I have control of and this country is in line for a real boom. I expect to be in Pittsburgh, Pa., the first of March and should you have anything in mind and I can afford the expense I will run over for a day at least.

In the meantime let us hear from you, and any advice or information you can get us on anything will be much appreciated.

R7. 10/22/44 [1180]‘s letter to EC:

Albuquerque, New Mexico

Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Virginia My dear Mr. Cayce:-

I have before me your letter to Mrs. [2519], of January 29th. It has been on my desk all year and unanswered though read many times. I wanted to report something worth while.

Of late I have had you on my mind so much, today was mostly spent reading your book, which I have nearly memorized and decided to give you a long letter as I know of no one I feel more interested in our welfare than you even though there are long intervals we do not write. If convenient for me to get a reading I would like very much for it to cover both my health, and business to some extent then I may have some more questions later. I shall give some account of my business and some questions, then wish for you to arrange the request as you see fit.

Things have gone very poor for us a long time now, and we are getting to an age where if ever we are to accomplish anything it must be soon, we cannot stand the hard work we once did and are anxious to know what is wrong business, or what?

Some ten years ago we got hold of the oil lease on a large tract of land which you know some about, we had great hopes of it, during depression nothing much could be done on it but we held on. A man by name of Grober, made us a deal to drill a test for a set amount of acreage which we accepted. He started drilling in short time he was broke, had disposed of his acreage so we give him more, then still more until he finally had some seventeen thousand acres for one well, he passed up one sand at 3200 that showed considerable oil, then at near four thousand foot. I do not know what he had but he shut down for two years for all my leases to expire then tried to get it, but I had an ace in the hole, that the court gave me an entire new lease setting him out entirely, we then allowed him sufficient land for his drilling but he was not satisfied so it is now in the higher court and not telling when it will be decided on again, the law is in our favor ten to one but there is now lots of money on the other side, it is considered very valuable once cleared up again in these times.

You see this has given us no revenue but took a lot of our time for years, so we took on a shallow venture west of here we drilled one well got three pays between five hundred and eight hundred feet but proved too near edge to pay off but did tell a lot for our lease we then moved over on structure further and evidently got little too far as had lots of water but got oil also, last December picked up a good show come home during cold weather back in February thinking we had a good well which we did at 640 ft but was never able to shut off the water and have spent balance of year on that hole, aside from short intervals we were home for court and some odd things that had to be looked after. [2519] and I working alone on merely enough income for our gasoline and eats. We failed to cut that water out so went on and are now 1040 ft and entering another pay that on adjoining section a good producer in this same sand was hit just recently, we lost our tools which is common for us as have old worn out lines and equipment; we were broke and out of supplies so came home two weeks today to recuperate a little. I had a tooth extracted that was giving a lot of bother, we are now ready to go back in a few days and try again to finish. From week to week all year we have thought sure we would win out, so for that reason have not taken in anyone, as have good acreage only couple sections but against production and our stuff geologically looks the best, and we should get a fair price if don’t make a well this time as conditions are now known and how to better handle if we were not so short all the time we would have been better prepared for the unusual conditions that we met and handled alright. So far we are out of debt and should realize something worth while but yet we don’t.

We are not in what could be called good health, of course hard work and worry besides neglect to teeth, eyes and general care taking all in consideration we are lucky to be good as we are. Seemingly we are not getting anywhere materially during these past three prosperous years and when one works from dusk to dawn under strain there is little chance to improve spiritual, so we want to know what is wrong. We are so situated that the pendulum could swing our way and we be in the millions is thirty days but it has been that way for years and we actually have not lived like common people. Neither one have had a thing like new dress clothes for years, yet some people think we are rich because we control large land holdings and have a nice home but don’t know the true inside so we thing it time for a reading.

1- Suggestion how to keep or improve my health. 2- Are we in the proper business? If not what business can I better fit in at my age and where? 3- How shall we handle our oil holdings to derive most from them? 4- Can we win our Court Action and realize anything worth while out of our large property namely the Tome Grant, in Valencia County, New Mexico or would we be ahead to forget it? 5- Can and should we develop our shallow acreage at Red Mountain, McKinley County into a lasting income or should we sell and get other income with proceeds? 6- Would we do well with a drilling company at this time? if so should we go to Artesia oil field with it or part of it? 7- Should we continue our efforts, to find a new shallow field around the rim of the San Juan Basin? if so, can you give any advise as how to best get our Geological information?

R8. 6/4/49 [2519]‘s letter to HLC:

My dear Hugh Lynn and family:-

Your nice letter of some weeks back deserved an answer before this. The book was received too for which we thank you.

[1180] and myself are happy to hear that your Father’s work is being carried on to help many thousands through his Spiritual Guidance, it is a wonderful idea, and too, it strengthens his Spiritual presence here on earth.

Our Father’s willingness to help us is ever present in our minds. Our file is filled with letters of encouragement in the past especially pertaining to a large oil property that we have held for years. After a long legal battle by some one trying to take this from us we finally won out last September but only had one year from that date in which to get one production. [1180] got an impression to contact Dave, and immediately received evidence of great interest for finances and made a costly trip to New York only to get entire property tied up and involved for six precious months of that year then be left holding the sack so is up to him alone to get on production, to save this property and it looks like he will be able to do so, but until we do get a break we will not be able to help on your work but as soon as we possibly can we certainly want to do our share.

It was a terrible mistake his relying on Dave, one thing in their transaction that I dislike is that Dave asked me on the phone while [1180] was in New York to send two of your Father’s readings pertaining to this property it was late at night and he assured me that they would be returned to me and I need not make copies and to date after asking him two or three times for them we are still unable to get them back. These have been a very precious possession to us. Would it be possible to get a copy of these? We do not know the dates but they were the last two given. I am writing this letter to you the same as I would if I were writing it to your father, so I know you will understand it is written in the same friendly manner. Remember us to Gladys Davis.

Dear [1180]

It was certainly a pleasure to see and talk with you in Phoenix. I appreciate your coming over to spend some time with us in the Phoenix conference. Perhaps next year we can get over to Albuquerque for some lectures, if not for a conference schedule. There seems to be more interest growing in the A.R.E. activities in Albuquerque.

I will be back at the Beach around the first of June and will get into that matter that you talked with me about just as soon as I return. That’s a lot to think about and I certainly hope it can be worked out.

Do give your wife my regards and tell her that we are going to look for you both in Virginia Beach as soon as your affairs are cleared so that you can get away for a good long visit. We would love to have both of you, as you know, at any time.

R11. 11/4/60 Robt. A. Adriance’s letter to EC:

Dear Bill [Mr. Wm. W. Lord, A.R.E. Trustee]:

I was interested to learn of your interests in Arizona. I was prospecting with our member, Thomas C. King [See [3638] re Arizona lands], in Yuma County. Tom is a mining engineer and a fine person.

It would be nice for you to know Tom. He is in his late thirties, married and lives at: 5133d Street, N.W., Albuquerque, New Mexico. He has both made and lost money in mining ventures. He seems very much interested in financing the A.R.E. and Foundation through locating the mines mentioned in the readings. I mentioned you to him as a responsible person to sit on a committee to manage such a responsibility if such came our way. Tom is a person, further, who has learned to ask for and to receive guidance through dreams and so on. It has been a pleasure getting to know him. By the way, no word on the assay, yet.

You may have heard of [1180] who worked with Edgar Cayce and David Kahn on an oil drilling venture after World War I. Some frictions developed at that time and, although oil bearing sands were found, there never came a gusher. [1180] died last December leaving an estate that appears to be worth more than a million dollars and a joint will with his wife bequesting 20% to the A.R.E. They have no children and Mrs. [2519] indicated to me her interest in helping the Association to an even greater degree. She lives in Albuquerque, too, and I met her through Tom while I was out there. Her address is: … N.E., Albuquerque, New Mexico.

There is one big factor involved in this estate: Mr. [1180] appeared to run all his business affairs himself and when he died, everything fell apart. At the moment there is:

1. A woodworking plant which includes a finger joint operation and which sits on 23 acres of ground and is valued at close to 1/2 million dollars that is completely closed down; 2. An adjoining industrial site of 26.8 acres valued at 150,000,00; 3. 647 front feet (10 acres) of very [[Free Will|choice]] in town business land valued at 800.00 - 1,000.00 a front foot; 4. 80,000.00 owing on the business land (400.00 installments per month) plus unspecified installments on some of the plant equipment; 5. No income, at present, to Mrs. [2519] other than social security payments.

Mrs. [2519] would like our help. I have written her advising that: 1. She borrow 20 - 40 M to pay bills, support herself, and use to start up the plant; 2. We have written a building contractor member who wants to move south from Michigan to see if he might be interested in and qualified to run her woodworking plant.

Until Everett Irion recovers sufficiently from his heart attack to move here, I shall be largely tied down at Virginia Beach. It occurred to Hugh Lynn and myself that this business and Association situation might tie in enough with your business background for you to be a good person to talk to Mrs. [2519] on your next trip out that way. There is a great potential in the business land - a two block area. I advised Mrs. [2519] to sell a part of, or all of, the industrial land in order to raise cash and pay off debt. The longer the plant stays closed down, the greater the loss there.

So here are two interesting situations in Albuquerque. If your plans work out, hope you may get there.

I guess I mentioned my business venture with Bill Sechrist in Texas - a car rental firm. He and Elsie are moving to Houston in December.
